police say this all began in charlotte county, virginia, which is about an hour and a half southwest of richmond. >> tonight, police believe the pair may be headed to new jersey. richardson was last seen driving a 1995 burgundy chevy van with the license place vmg 2332. >> police say the girl has green eyes and blonde hair and is believed to be in extreme danger tonight. the police are urging anyone with information to call 911. now to an nbc10 exclusive. new video of a store owner prying a gun away from a would-be robber. >> that same robber is accused of shooting a good samaritan in a separate crime. nbc10's denise nakano is the only reporter to talk to that good samaritan. denise is live at police headquarters. denise, what did he tell you? >> reporter: well, he tells me tonight he did not give this a second thought. he confronted the gunman, who threatened the lives of people he considers family. a good samaritan is walking

again and talking only to nbc10 about the gunman who shot him in the leg. >> i'm glad to be here. >> reporter: this grandfather, who asked we not show his face, say the folks at a and a gross rid in north philadelphia treat him like family. in this surveillance video released by him. >> i walked over to him and tapped and said, come on, come on. that's when he turn around and shot me. >> the gunman robbed two other stores a few blocks away, including the fontaine deli. one of the owners showed me video of how he and the suspect fought over the suspect's gun until cruz pried it out of his hands and chased him out the store. >> as soon as i turned, my reaction was to jump on him. got protected me and i was able to take his gun. >> reporter: as for the good

is going to see the rain for the morning. locally we have some light rain around the jersey shore down through sussex county. near the philadelphia area and up towards trenton, parts of lower bucks company. cape may and atlantic counties, that's some pretty steady light rain. the heaviest is staying offshore right now. as we go into the morning, some of the rain you see down to our south will try to move in too, but that area of low pressure is going to be moving out to sea. your morning forecast, allentown, cloudy, 41 degrees. atlantic city, some showers around. philadelphia, some scattered showers and a chilly start to your day too. we'll take a closer look through the rest of the afternoon tomorrow. also at a changing weekend forecast. that's coming up. now new at 11:00, a big change could be on the horizon for students in philadelphia. they could start school before labor day. >> nbc10's brandon hudson spoke to parents. he's live at school district headquarters in spring garden. brandon, what did they have to say? >> reporter: jim and jacqueline, even if a change were to happen,

it's not something we so see tomorrow or even next year. the noticeable change would be in the 2018-2019 school year when city schools would start before labor day. the goal is to improve academics and attendance. as soon as we learned about philadelphia public schools idea to possibly shift the school calendar, we tracked down parents. in south philly, we met tammy and her two daughters, who attend public school in the city. >> i actually think thit's a go thing and more in line with what the rest of the country does. >> reporter: the city school district said its noticed chart ter schools starting earlier too. starting tomorrow, the school reform commission will present the academic calendars for the next two years with a big change in the 2018-2019 school yearm. t a start day before labor day and end date on june 4th. >> the school district looking at all avenues and options of how we feel we can increase attendance and improve academic performance. >> kevin geary of philadelphia public schools told us school

attendance is up 3%, which is a number they want to continually boost. nbc10 found compared to city school districts similar in size, two already began before labor day this year. >> we believe if school ends a little bit earlier, that we'll see higher attendance numbers. >> reporter: we also learned if there is a change in 2018, the average temperature doesn't change from the usual end date to the new proposed start date. when we spoke to letitia crawford, the only change she suggested was having kids go to school year-round. >> we don't have any recreation centers. we don't have no clubhouses, no boys and girls clubs. i think they really should have school year-round. >> reporter: the presentation will happen tomorrow here at city schools headquarters. parents are invited. a vote will likely happen in december. live in spring garden, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. we're following breaking news out of north philadelphia. one person was shot and killed outside a chinese takeout restaurant. this happened within the last half hour. skyforce10 above this scene.

it's in the 1800 block of ridge avenue. right now there are no arrests that have been made. philadelphia mayor jim kenney issued a call for calm tonight after a series of crimes. the mayor denounced those incidents during an event at the penn museum tonight. the latest violence includes a flash mob style attack at 16th and walnut in center city and racist messages sent to students at the university of pennsylvania. the mayor says there's no place for these heinous acts in philadelphia. >> we must also recognize you cannot combat hate with more hate. instead, we must work, and i mean really work to preserve and protect what you love about this great city. >> the mayor vowed that those committing these crimes will be caught and punished to the fullest extent. now to the presidential election. transition. tomorrow, president-elect trump will meet with his vice president as they fill out the cabinet. tonight, we are seeing more

listen to each other, we make great strides. >> congressman evans replaces chaka fattah. fattah resigned after his conviction on corruption charges earlier this year. a local church is in the center of an immigration battle as a father of three tries to avoid deportation. javier flores lives at arch street methodist church. the mexican national was released from pikes detention center in august. he was given 90 days to sort out his visa case but the clock ran out today. his attorney is arguing that a waiver is deserved so his client can stay with his wife and three american born children. >> we appealed this twice because we thought the incorrect decision was made. the issue has as been in the waiver of admissibility. >> government agents are allowed to go into churches to serve

warrants but have avoided that in the past. this isn't the first time a philadelphia area church has been used as a sanctuary. in 2014, angela navarro moved into west kenz ig ton . today she is living and working here legally as she goes through the residency process. former philadelphia eagle josh huff will be back in the area tomorrow, but it has nothing to do with football. huff is due in camden county court to face drug and weapons charges. he was pulled over on the new jersey side of the walt whitman bridge earlier this month. he admitted to police that he had marijuana, a handgun, and bullets in the car. new tonight, 13 people are facing charges in the destructive celebrations after penn state's win over ohio state. thousands of fans packed downtown state college last month. some people pulled down street lights and traffic signs, causing up to $30,000 in damage. police say 11 of the people charged are penn state students. some of them are facing felony riot charges.

they could face further disciplinary action from the university. authorities say there is no credible threat to new york city's annual thanksgiving day parade. this after a magazine published buy isis suggested it would be an excellent target for a terror attack. the magazine includes a virtual how-to on inflicting maximum tragedies. it directs lone wolves to rent a truck and drive into a crowd. a legend lost. renowned journalist gwen ifill passed away today after a battle with cancer. ifill will be remembered as one of the nation's most prominent black journalists and political commentators. the pbs news hour host covered seven presidential campaigns and moderated both the 2004 and 2008 vice presidential debates. she also moderated a democratic debate between hillary clinton and senator bernie sanders last year. before joining pbs, ifill worked for nbc news.

i we can do it withoutg blowing our budget. oh yeah, this is great! everything for thanksgiving. that's my giant. new at 11:00, we are learning what led to this small plane crash last month in camden county. officials with the national transportation safety board say the engine lost power just before the crash in lindenwold. the ntsb says the pilot reported problems with the throttle during the flight.

neighborhoods, i think we'll see some spot it showers in the morning. the weather pattern not really clearing out for the morning commute. later in the afternoon, we will see more clearing. a live look at the radar. most of the rain is still confined to the shore where we had earlier this afternoon where some of that rain was, in fact, pretty heavy. now it's a little bit lighter for cape may and atlantic counties, but it's still steady. so it's been fairly steady all day long. it goes up through parts of ocean county, some embedded more moderate showers here. but this is what we have currently. tomorrow morning, the moisture that you still see to our south, that's going to continue moving up. so i think again we'll see some spotty showers for the morning commute. not for everybody, but for some of you, early in the morning just keep that in mind as you're heading out the door. we also have cool temperatures. tomorrow will be a chilly day. mostly the mid-to-upper 50s. after that we're talking about the 60s for the rest of the week. and going into the weekend, we're going to have a weather system approaching along with a cold blast of air. so there is a chance we could

see a wintry mix through part of the area. of course we're still many days away from part of your weekend where we do expect that. so we could be seeing some changes until we get there. but of course we'll be updating you every day this week on that. here's future weather. the rain kind of hanging around for tomorrow morning. 7:00 a.m., we'll have some spotty showers aunder roe. the heaviest rain will be offshore. it doesn't look like a heavy rain event for the morning. in the afternoon we see a lot more clearing, and then wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, all looking nice and dry here. and as we go into the start of your weekend, we will be dry. it's the second half of the weekend that we'll be watching for that wintry mix i just mentioned. for the lehigh valley tomorrow, lowest chance of some spotty showers. 60 for the high in reading. 54, bethlehem. westchester coming in 59 degrees tomorrow. 56 for fairmount. if you're in our new jersey neighborhoods, expect mostly the mid-to-upper 50s.

new twist in the netflix series "making a murderer." a federal judge ruled today that brendan dassey should be freed from prison while the state appeals a ruling overturning his conviction. dassey confessed to helping his uncle, steven avery, kill a photographer in 2005. but just a few months ago, a judge ruled his confession had been coerced. but wisconsin is appealing that ruling. the state's attorney general now plans to file an emergency motion to block dassey's release. how about this? lost luggage is about to become a thing of the past thanks to some new technology. delta is using microchips in its luggage tags. the chips transmit a gps signal that allows you to track your bag the second the tag is placed on it. you can track the status of your bag through an app on your smartphone. united and alaska airlines are
