ambush style attacks on police officers in two separate states, one is dead and the other critical, a manhunt for the shooters is under way. president-elect donald trump had a busy weekend interviewing potential cabinet members while also slamming "saturday night live" as being unfair. president obama returned to the white house this morning with advice for the donald and fellow democrats. and snowstorms around the country already having a big impact on pre thanksgiving travel. early "today" starts right now. good monday morning. >> we begin this morning with breaking news. right now police are on the hunt for a suspect in the murder of a san antonio police officer. detective benjamin marconi was

fatally shot in broad daylight. he was making a routine traffic stop outside of police head yaurts, that's when this vehicle pulled up, a person got out, drew a gun and shot him twice in the head fatally. >> in my opinion what we know right now this was nothing short of an assassination of a police officer. he happened to be wearing the wrong colors, blue. >> police are searching for a person of interest seen in this photo. and they don't believe he has any relationship with the original motorist who was pulled over. after the shooting, though, san antonio officers were advised not to make traffic stops alone and having ordered to call for backup instead. a massive search is under way this morning in st. louis for the suspect of another officer-involved shooting. the suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous. the ambush attack happened sunday evening when the suspect pulled up alongside a marked police car and fired two shots

at an officer's face. police say the incident was unprovoked with the officer merely sitting in traffic. the 46-year-old is in critical but stable conditioned and is expected to survive. police say he was a married father of three who has been with the department for 20 years. this morning police officers are ordered to travel in pairs as they use helicopters and s.w.a.t. teams in the search for the suspect who drove off in a silver car. a lot of politics in our headlines. it was a weekend of almost nonstop meetings for president-elect donald trump as he met 21 potential cabinet members holding court at his bed minister, new jersey, golf club. he greeted those including democrat michelle rhee. also rudy guiliani, cubs co-owner, todd ricketts, chris christie and james mattis, a leading candidate for defense secretary. while trump teased a couple deals reached on cabinet appointments no news was made since the transition team

lake-effect snow falling at a rate to 1 to several inches per hour in some locations made driving difficult or impossible for some. high winds with gusts of up to 30 miles per hour hit some people. officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel because of icy conditions and poor visibility. let's get an update with nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has the latest on your pre thanksgiving weather. >> the snowstorm that was in the minnesota on friday regenerate nood a big huge windstorm and it's producing a lot of lake enhanced snow even this morning especially the upslope mountains, a lot of snow in the hills of hartford, syracuse, watertow watertown, we could get an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow. the worst of the travel with the winds and snow, weather-related delays likely in the northeast, great in the southeast and the middle of the country looks great, too. that's a look at the big weather story of the day. here is a closer look at your day ahead.

this is an amazing story. meet 55-year-old joe thomas sr. he is number 42 on your screen. a running back for south carolina state. now, thomas enrolled at south carolina state with his son who also played football. thomas is believed to be the oldest division one football player to ever take the field. he says it was a dream 36 years in the making. >> just follow your dream. do what you need to do. it's all about you when you're trying to do what you need to do. a lot of people look to other people and don't follow up on it. i didn't pay that any attention. >> it happened on saturday afternoon. thomas carried the ball three yards on a play in the first quarter. thomas later told reporters it was the happiest kay of his life and accomplishments prove that age is really just a number. you can each see the members of the opposing team congratulating him, giving him high-fives.
