i i'm thrilled! got the first major winter storm of the season and that's paving the way for some tricky holiday travel from virginia all the way up into new england. al is back from his whirlwind trip and he's got the forecast. sir? >> that's right. first we're going to check in with blake mccoy who's in syracuse, new york. >> reporter: al, good morning to you. this morning is continuing its march east. look at what people are waking up to here this morning. snow started falling yesterday afternoon and will continue into tonight. school here in syracuse has already been canceled as people are experiencing this first major snowfall of the season. >> reporter: with thanksgiving just three days away, the northeast getting served its first taste of winter. the blast of snow and frigid temperatures creating dangerous driving conditions at the start of one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. overnight, more snow in upstate new york where some areas could see up to 20 inches by tomorrow.

in watertown, new york, the temperature dropping more than 40 degrees in 24 hours. >> it was 60 degrees, almost 70 yesterday. and now it is freezing. >> reporter: from new england to virginia, windchill temperatures in the teens and single digits. the deadly winter storm advancing east after blanketing the rockies and much of the midwest. in minnesota, three weather-related deaths. in parts of michigan, powerful wind gusts up to nearly 80 miles per hour toppling trees and leaving some residents without power. >> a heck of a wind storm and it just knocked stuff out. >> reporter: the michigan wolverines also making the best of it with some victory snow angels after their wintry win over indiana. back live here in syracuse, people have been up early trying to clear these sidewalks. they will get some help from mother nature later in the week. it is expected to be 40 here by

thanksgiving. but if you are headed out this morning, it is going to be slick. matt? savannah? >> blake mccoy, thank you very much. so that's what winter looks like, al. >> unfortunately. we've got more coming. believe it or not, that lake-effect snow is being enhanced by moisture all the way from bermuda, coming up, wrapping around the storm and coming on in. you can see, we're still going to have a lot of this and it is coming across the great lakes. the water is very warm so it is going to continue to provide those lake-effect snows. we've got near white-out conditions at time, one to two inches per hour. some places may pick up another 15 to 20 inches. as far as travel is concerned, when we take a look at the thanksgiving holiday, airports on wednesday, the biggest problem is detroit -- make that chicago and minneapolis. we are looking at possible delays due to rain. improving conditions by late in the evening. but as far as ground transportation, out west we are

looking at problems on 90, interstate 5, 80. here in the midsection of the country, i-70 will have some problems as well. i-94 going to be a problem, too, guys. we will continue to track wednesday, thursday look to be really shaky kind of days. then things kind of calm down. >> just in time for travel. >> all right, al, thank you very much. let's turn to politics now and of course everyone talking about the trump transition. this morning, the president-elect's cabinet is coming into some clearer focus after a weekend jam-packed with meetings and controversy. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has more on that. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. president-elect donald trump set to meet with one-time political foe, former texas governor, rick herry, here at trump tower today, this after a flurry of meetings over the weekend. the roster raising questions about whether mr. trump is mulling a team of allies that includes a few rivals.

it's full-steam ahead for the trump transition team. donald trump returning home to new york city late sunday night. today the president-elect set to meet with former texas governor rick perry, one of his sharpest critics during the primary. >> he offers a barking carnival act that can best be described as trumpism. >> reporter: but today, speculation is swirling that trump may be eyeing perry for a cabinet role, including secretary of defense. also under consideration for that position, retired marine general james "mad dog" mattis who met with donald trump this weekend. telling nbc's kelly o'donnell -- >> we really had some great meetings and you'll be hearing about them soon. >> reporter: among those spotted sunday -- long-time loyalist rudy giuliani. a candidate for secretary of state. former kansas secretary of state, chris kobach, an immigration hardliner. b.e.t. founder, robert johnson,

a possible pick for hud or education secretary. and new jersey governor chris christie who once headed trump's transition team but was replaced by vice president-elect mike pence. mr. trump dodging the question of who you seriously he is considering chris christie for a position. >> he is a very talented man. great guy. >> reporter: but it was this meeting saturday with former rival mitt romney that made the most headlines. war of words now over, mr. trump now seriously considering romney for one of his top posts. >> i can say that governor romney is under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state. >> reporter: all this amid mounting concerns mr. trump's cabinet picks so far are in to drawing hard lines on a number of issues, including a potential registry for muslims, an idea trump floated during his campaign. and his new chief of staff would not totally walk back. >> can you eekw equivocally rul

a registry for muslims? vice president-elect was met with a mix of cheers and boos while attending the broadway musical "hamilton." a cast member delivering an impassioned plea. >> we truly hope this show has inspired you to work on behalf of all of us. >> mr. trump took to twitter to slam the actor calling him "very rude," but pence brushed it all aside. >> i did hear what was said from the stage. i can tell you, i wasn't offended by what was said. i'll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it. >> reporter: the president-elect also taking aim after he was again lambasted on "saturday night live." >> trump calling it totally one-sided. critics are speculating about whether trump's sweet storm was designed to distract from his settlement of the trump university fraud cases, agreeing to pay $25 million but not admitting to any wrongdoing.

one of the cast members addresses him. pence lets it kind of roll off. trump takes to twitter. i'm sure it's real irritating, a lot of these things, you're watching "snl." but if you were advising trump would you say just don't even engage, or should he engage? >> so i traveled all over the world with president bush. he was greeted with protests everywhere he went. every american city, every european capital. south american summits with leaders in the hall. and being protested is part of the american presidency. i think pence is a perfect example of how you handle it. he was elegant, he was understanding. and he was patient. i think trump is going to have to learn that your job as president is not only to be protested but to protect the protester. >> let me go to a different side of that. protests are one thing. jokes are another thing. you talk about president bush and there were the jokes about the job being very hard and that the vice president, dick cheney, would do all heaven lifting. and after a while, do those start to impact an administration? >> well --

>> the psyche? >> only in that you understand that you've diminished comedy and entertainment. i think that's what they play the most important role in our culture and in our conversations. when you're in the white house, you talk about leaning in? you sort of have to lean in to the jokes about yourself. george w. bush was criticized for a lot of different things. but hemaking fun of himself and he gave a speech once about all the things people tease him about. this "snl" character googling how do you kill isis, this is based on some of his own -- i don't know if you can even call them gaffes. because i think right now he views all of his missteps as having been part of the secret sauce that helped him win. but it is a mistake not to let people laugh at you and it is a mistake to not laugh at yourself. >> nicolle wallace, lots to chat about. thank you so much for being here. >> we won't get bored. >> not at all. thank you. president obama back at the white house this morning after his final trip abroad while in office.

the president and his russian counterpart, vladimir putin, spoke for around four minutes on sunday at an economic summit in lima, peru. at a news conference, president obama said he told putin the u.s. is deeply concerned about bloodshed and chaos in syria and that a political transition is needed but the president says he's not optimistic about the prospects of a syrian peace agreement in the short term. breaking overnight here, st. louis officials say a police sergeant who was shot twice in the face is in critical condition now but expected to survi survive. police say the 46-year-old officer was sitting in traffic sunday night when a car pulled up along his vehicle and opened fire. hours later the suspect was killed in a shoot-out with police. in san antonio there is a manhunt under way this morning for the cop killer who ambushed, then gunned down, a veteran detective while he was writing a traffic ticket. nbc's jacob rascon is there. jacob, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, it happened just outside san antonio police

headquarters where we are. this morning, the department is working with the fbi, the u.s. marshals, the texas rangers and others to find the detective's killer after what the police chief described as everyone's worst nightmare. this morning, an all-out manhunt for the killer of san antonio detective ben marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force. cold-blooded shooting just yards from police headquarters while detective marconi was writing a traffic sikticket. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: police this morning searching for this man who they are calling a person of interest and this black mitsubishi caught on surveillance driving away. >> went through the south lot of headquarters. >> reporter: police say detective marconi was sitting in his patrol car when the mitsubishi pulled up behind him. the shooter getting out, taking aim and firing twice hitting the detective in the head. marconi was rushed to the hospital where he died. authorities say they believe he

was targeted for being a cop. >> this was nothing short of an assassination of a police officer. >> reporter: so far this year, 58 police officers have been killed by gunfire, compared to 36 for all of last year. a 61% increase. >> he was just a good guy. everybody liked him. >> reporter: the son of a police officer, marconi was 50 years old. he had two children from a previous marriage, and grandchildren. >> most families will be celebrating the holidays. we will be burying one of our own because of an ultimate act of cowardice. >> reporter: and after that ambush in july with dallas police officers, the governor of texas proposed a law making targeted attacks against police officers a hate crime and in offering condolences to detective marconi's family, the governor said he looks forward to signing that bill into law. >> all right, jacob rascon, thank you very much. want to turn now to a

developing story in north dakota where protesters clash erers cl police sunday night over the today k today k pipeline. nbc news could not independently confirm the use of rubber bullets and sheriff's officials say that no water canons were deployed. they said the water was being sprayed to control fires that were set by the protesters. all eyes on chicago this morning and the looming strike at o'hare's airport. it could snarl holiday travel. union officials say they're going to announce the date of their strike later this morning. about 500 workers, which includes baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, jan teritors are all seeking union rights and a $15 an hour wage. o'hare, as you know, one of the busiest airports in the world. now to football.

>> reporter: bare lon will be the youngest boy to live in the white house since john f. kennedy jr. and at 10, will be the same age as malia obama whether her father was inaugurated. raising kids in the white house, a unique experience, one melania trump talked about with michelle obama on her visit to d.c. earlier this month. it is not clear now how often barron trump will visit his father in washington, or how often the president-elect will head back to trump tower. but one thing's certain -- all of them will get secret service protection, no matter which house they call home. and the secret service isn't commenting any more about security protocols for the first family. there is already some speculation about which school barron may attend once he moves here to washington. the obama daughters and chelsea clinton all attended the same private school here. remember, president obama will stick around the city even after his term is up until his youngest daughter graduates, another presidential parent hoping not to disrupt his child's routine. matt?

it and what did the diaries bring back? what was that time like? >> i didn't remember any details. i don't have a good memory. i've seen to it that i wouldn't by varying activities. no. it was sad. because i was so insecure and, you know, it's very raw. obviously i didn't expect anyone, including myself, i suppose, later on to read it. >> yeah. so now you did give a heads-up to harrison. i know you guys have stayed friends all these years. what did he say? do you think he's read the book? >> i don't know. he's incredibly private. i feel really bad about doing that to him. but, yes, i told him i found the journals and that i was going to publish them. he sort of went "lawyer." >> just made a joke. so, this reaction that you've gotten, you do seem genuinely surprised by it. >> i am. i don't know why. it seems like it would be so improbable. you know?

if you pretend something long enough it comes true, i think. and we were cast that way, i suppose. >> well, there was tons of chemist chemistry. look at you guys. you're just adorable. i mean -- i think that's what it is. i think people would have been rooting for that. i will say, you are very honest about the fact that -- well, first of all, you were 19, he was 33. he was married, he had two kids. you even write that you were almost relieved when the affair ended because you didn't approve of yourself. >> no. i wasn't raised that way. but, when you're on location, this is something i discovered -- everything is permitted. i didn't know that. i haven't been on a location since. >> once thing you are not going to get in this book are like a bunch of steamy sex scenes or anything. >> thank god. well, look at you. you've had a steamy sex scene obviously. >> it was a long time ago.

kids. >> reporter: his parents took him to st. jude's hospital for treatment. >> i had to go through treatment for 3 1/2 years and sat out football for about 2 1/2 years. >> reporter: those years didn't stop the heart of this champion. throughout treatment sean continued to work hard, believing one day he would make it to the nfl. doctors at st. jude made every effort to get sean back in the game. >> as soon as the treatment was over -- >> you allowed him to go back and play football. >> yes. he was ready. >> when i first got the green light to start playing again, it was very exciting to be back out there for my teammates. can't even explain the first time i was out there on field. >> reporter: sean succeeded on and off the field earning both a bachelor's and masters degree while playing. >> going into college i wanted to get as much as i could out of it. it worked out real good. >> reporter: sean became an inspiration to other kids at st. jude, like 17-year-old nicholas london, a 6'5" nba hopeful who also had leukemia. how much does this friendship mean to you?

this morning on "today's food, all-star thanksgiving," a dessert that is going to wow your guests. we've got two of the country's

best pastry chefs collaborating on something new and spectacular. guys, good morning. happy almost thanksgiving. >> morning. >> can't wait. >> is it a pie or is it a cake? which is it? >> it is a psa, is what it is. >> is it? >> yeah, it is. >> it is a pie-cake. you've seen on social media. it is blowing up. people putting pies into cakes. >> it is a little bit like the reese's commercial where the peanut butter and chocolate have an accident. >> you bake them together. so he and i had feelings about that that are pretty strong. so we decided to collaborate and make something we would actually want to eat. >> start with the cake part. talk about the ingredients. >> we're going to make a pumpkin chocolate chip bundt cake. the big thing is when you go to the store don't buy pumpkin pie

filling. they look very similar. pumpkin puree. flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, eggs. you have to make two. >> so, we've made the mixture here. we put it in the pan. how long does that cook and how do you know it is done? >> it is going to cook for about 35, 40 minutes. you'll know it is done just kind of by pressing on it and taking a toothpick, stick it in and pull it out. toothpick is clean, cake is done. >> you're going to make the frosting? that's a lot of sugar. >> nothing wrong with sugar. this is a boiled milk frosting. it's got flour and sugar. i always put maple because i'm a vermonter. milk because boiled milk frosting, very good. i've got great faith new, sir.

milk. heavy cream because -- why not? it's thanksgiving. we've got our fat pants on. then pumpkin because this is going to be a pumpkin thing. >> just preserved your secret -- we boil that up, cook that down. goes into the mixer. >> it has to match your batter. this makes the cake better. right? >> how long did you have to work on that? that's amazing. >> i was painting this all night. still wet. then you get it really thick and it has to be cool before you start adding butter. >> you're going to put the butter in. we've only got two minutes left and we have an entire section left. talk about the pie part. >> this is the pie part. traditionally they bake everything together and it is a big, fat mess. so i thought let's put the pecan pie in the middle. so you just fill -- >> store-bought pie crust? >> you can. i don't like the idea. but fine. whatever.

and then i blind bake it first. so you don't have a soggy bottom because nobody likes a soggy bottom. then you make the filling which is brown sugar, some butter. maple, again. and then one of the tricks for this is when this is warm, you slowly add it into the eggs. you whisk that up because you'll slowly add the hot stuff to the eggs. it is called tempering so you don't get scrambled pecan pie egg stuff. you can chop up the pecans or leave them whole. up to you. obviously you can eat both of these separately. must -- you don't have to do it together. >> i just don't want to shortchange the final step here. we'll pretend that's happened. now is when these two great baking minds come together. go ahead. >> go for it. >> so now we're going to take this, pecan pie, and you put it on top of that boiled milk icing

and the bundt so that you can kind of wrap your head around it, i kind of think about pecan pie as like the filling of a german chocolate cake. you know that really gooey, yummy caramel-pecan filling? >> there's more. >> and, yes, there's more. so you line it up because the bundt has these peculiar little pointies. >> people at home may be starting to get the idea what this is going to look like. >> you ice the whole thing. cover this cake all the way. and it becomes -- a pumpkin! adorable! >> the guys downstairs, how are our tasters doing? >> amazing! >> it is a dessert turducken. >> you got to get some of the pec pecan, some of the cake, you got to get the right bite. it is really good. >> and it only takes six, seven hours to make.

over for dinner and i gave them my tupperware. >> it's not coming back. >> that's what made me think. thanksgiving, bring your own tupperware and you can take home a little bobby flay. >> we save all the take-out containers we get. when people come over, we have leftovers, we give them the leftover containers. >> what's your go-to number one thing outside the turkey, the best side that you can make is it. >> i am making a southwestern thanksgiving this year. so i'm going to say the first thing i thought of was the cornbread and chorizo stuffing. i make stuffing on the side so it is nice and crusty. >> i like in the bird stuffing. >> it's important if you're going to host thanksgiving -- listen. >> i'm listening. >> if you're going to host thanksgiving you need to be organized. i'm going to cook all the food -- but my guests are assigned either bring a dessert or a bottle of wine.

and your tupperware. that's it. that way we have the wine covered, the dessert covered. >> you require guests to stick around and help you clean up? >> i don't. >> very magnanimous. >> although people sort of volunteer their way through. . >> then they steal your silverware. >> and the tupperware. and the turkey. >> we've asked our fans on the plaza, viewers at home, to submit thanksgiving questions. okay? so, you can submit your questions to #todaystake and #askachef. >> the turkey has has made his appearance. >> our producers thought it would be funny if we wore a turkey hat. most of our chefs said, meh, thanks, but not so much. >> no head gear. you dig in the turkey. >> our first one is from tanya from new jersey. it is my first time making a turkey.

what's the best approach so i don't mess it up? >> really simple. do what i do. don't brian. put the turkey in a roasting pan, season with salt and pepper, slather a bunch of melted butter in there and kick it into the oven. i don't cover it. . i cover it later. i start it at about 400 degrees. it gets nice and brown after 45 minutes to an hour. depends on how big it is. then i cover it with some tinfoil to protect it and just keep roasting it. i slow down oven to about 350. >> this from hanna from birmingham, alabama. what's the difference between dressing and stuffing? >> well, you like dressing. >> i don't like stuffing. >> obviously stuffing is stuffing in the bird and dressing is cooking it on the side. the reason why i like to cook it on the side for two reasons. first, you get a nice crust on the outside so you get that good contrast in texture. also it helps cook the bird evenly if you don't stuff it. and quicker. >> i do both. i make stuffing, and i make a dressing on the side.

then the stuffing inside. then i mix them. >> wow. >> i want to let you know this on the air. al has a lot of, let's say, veet cred or kitchen cred in the chef industry because he's been so supportive for a long time and we know he can cook. >> he can cook. how many things do you cook? on your menu? >> i don't do that many. turkey, i probably do a ham. then maybe four or five. >> you throw the ham in there. >> oh, yeah. >> he goes big. >> last one, jennifer. i want to add brussel sprouts to our thanksgiving table. >> i'm actually doing one tomorrow. i'm doing a brussels sprouts recipe tomorrow. you can watch it. it has pomegranates, some kind of nut and a little pomegranate molasses so go get that now. >> you'll show us tomorrow. >> blanch, then roast, then season. that's it. >> i just roast with a little rendered bacon fat and then about 30 cloves of garlic. >> sufficient's got to go on
