toward the 6:00 hour, temperatures in the mid-30s. remember it's going to feel like it's in the 20s and you won't have that power of the sun to help you out. temperatures down near the freezing park by tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. we'll let you know when the wind is finally going to die down, when the temperature goes up, and if there's going to be any rain during thanksgiving weekend, coming up. we know many of you are hitting the road for the holiday as early as tomorrow, maybe today. look at that traffic out there. still ahead on nbc 10 news at 4:00, meteorologist krystal klei will break down the forecast for your travel destination region by region. the weather a factor as strong winds continue to fuel fires in south jersey. several families say their belongs were burned to rubble because of the intense flames. >> nbc 10 teams are covering both fires today.

let's begin with nbc 10's ted greenberg with the challenging conditions firefighters face and what may have stashrted the fir ted. >> reporter: a heartbreaking scene in new jersey, capital city. investigators believe it started at the far end of this block, then spread. but they want to make sure that all utilities are off before they start sifting through the debris to try to figure out what sparked the flames that took such a heavy toll on this neighborhood three days before thanksgiving. their clothing, their keep sakes, their community. a block of nine houses in trenton now gone. >> the pajama under this jacket, everything. >> the fire was too much. we couldn't take nothing, we couldn't do nothing.

. >> the cars started getting on fire. the wheels started popping from the heat. >> reporter: three people went to the hospital, including a firefighter with an injured leg. five of the houses collapsed. siding on nearby homes melted. firefighters say winds were gusty. but their biggest challenge came from falling power lines. >> the fire from that time had spread, and there was no water on it because of the safety issue with the electricity. >> reporter: it took firefighters four hours to get the upper hand to the flames. utility crews had to shut off power and gas to surrounding homes and businesses. >> got my son, put a blanket on him and ran out of the house. >> reporter: her son is 3 years old. >> he wants to go back home. there's nothing to go back to. >> reporter: the red cross tells me it's assisting more than two dozen people from the

neighborhood. many of those who lost their homes are now staying with relatives and friends. authorities tell me it is very likely that this entire row of homes will have to be demolished. live in trenton, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. from trenton to woodbury, gloucester county, where seven people are without a home because of a massive fire. neighborhoods say the flames jumped, level one home, destroying another, and damaging a third. nbc 10's cydney long joins us live from the scene in woodbury with a man who managed to escape. >> reporter: that victim feels very fortunate, lucky to be alive. he told me he thanks god for having his back. the homes are owned by a church here. you can tell the sheer power of the flames here this morning by what's left and what isn't. he didn't hear any of the commotion until one of his roommates yelled, "there's a fire."

it was the noise that woke many from a sound sleep. >> it sounded like an explosion. >> reporter: residents, still in their pajamas, ran outside. armed with their cellphones, they dialed 911 and took these photos and video. they watched the flames jump to two adjacent homes. ian picking was still sound asleep in the basement, one of seven church employees who lived here. >> i came running outside. everyone was outside, and the one guy who jumped out the window. >> reporter: he remembers dragging one of his neighbors to safety. >> this tree was on fire, the leaves were burning. the fire was really big. >> it was a very powerful wind happening. >> reporter: dozens of neighbors used guard hoses to put out small fires carried across the street by the burning embers. >> that bush oar over there caught on fire for a moment.

>> reporter: firefighters played a waiting game with pse&g to shut off gas and electric. his fear? >> electrocution. the wires are still hot on the ground. you can't do an effective fire attack and it's endangering the firefighters. >> reporter: pickens and his family were in awe of the power of the flames. >> god was taking care of me. >> reporter: pse&g says it took less than an hour to get the electric and gas shut off to this block. four of the seven people who got out of this middle home do remain hospitalized. that includes the man who jumped from that second story window. we've been checking with the church and reaching out to the pastor to see how he's doing, as soon as we find out we'll let you know. cydney long, nbc 10 news. following breaking news in north philadelphia. police on the scene of a stabbing in a clothing store there. they say a masked man walked

into the city blue store on north broad street and told the clerk to open the cash register, then pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the worker in the arms and hands. no word on that worker's condition right now. as soon as we know more, we'll let you know. nbc 10's tony braxton is on their way to the scene. a man talked about joining isis and carrying out an attack on times square. he's from yemen and a legal resident to the united states. police say he wanted his attack on times square to be like the one in nice, france back in july. that's when a terrorist drove a truck through the streets while crowds celebrated bastille day. 86 people were killed. more than 400 injured. now to the transition to

trump. we're getting a better idea who is being considered for top positions in the new administration as we await more announcements. it's been another full day of meetings in trump tower of new york. oklahoma governor mary fallon is being considered to head the interior department. her meeting with mr. trump came after he talked with former u.s. senator scott brown of massachusetts. brown indicated he is under consideration to become veterans affairs secretary. mr. trump's campaign manager said things are progressing smoothly but there's no rush. >> you have to take your time. this is serious business. and he just has all these different people to interview and to consult with. and until that is done, he's not in a rush to make those announcements. >> we learned today that president-elect trump will spend thanksgiving at his resort in palm beach, florida. vice president-elect pence will travel to mississippi where his son is training to be a marine

pilot. one day after his face-to-face with president-elect trump, new jersey governor chris christie held a meeting with his cabinet. the lieutenant governor joined the governor for the meeting today in trenton. it's unclear what they discussed. yesterday the governor and donald trump met for 30 minutes. when asked if christie could get a job in the administration, the president-elect told reporters "he's very talented guy." governor christie says he plans to finish his term which ends in january of 2018. september's deadly train crash in hoboken is prompting action if federal regulators. this week they'll issue a safety advisory stressing the importance of sleep apnea screening and treatment for train operators. the engineer in the hoboken crash was found to have sleep apnea. his train slammed into the terminal, killing a woman. the lawyer of a bucks county man accused in a sex abuse case involving six amish sisters is speaking out for the first time.

>> today lee kaplan waived his preliminary hearing. that means the court can move forward with his trial. kaplan was originally arrested in july. authorities claim the feasterville man fathered two children with a then-14-year-old girl who had been gifted to him by her parents. >> share with i say why he waived his preliminary hearing. >> mr. kaplan and i had discussed it before the hearing. he didn't want to put the girls through any more trauma than they've been put through by the commonwealth. >> kaplan has maintained his innocence and no new court date has been set. a delaware county mayor facing dui and other charges this afternoon. authorities say upland borough's mayor hit several cars. police say he walked away from the wreck but they tracked.

down. from south jersey, the latest in a series of informational sessions regarding camden's school district. the latest meeting in the parents' listening tour. the focus is to go over the recently-released school information cards that track the progress of each school and give overall school quality ratings. each school is given a grade of on track, needs improvement, or underperforming. pope francis is extending a key decision on abortion. the right of catholic priests to forgive women who have aabortions. the news comes in a document written by the pope. pope francis says abortion is still considered a grave sin but says, quote, there is no sin that god's mercy cannot reach and wipe away. back at home, federal investigators were back at the scene of a deadly plane crash at the jersey shore yesterday. authorities found the plane after it went down in the

forest. it left maryland on saturday but never landed at the ocean county airport. the pilot died in the crash. it's another day of searching for several teenagers wanted in connection with the shooting of a philadelphia police officer. officer angelo romero was shot in the hand while protecting his young son. he was off-duty at the time. he was outside with his son when two or three teenagers opened fire at each other. the officer is at home recovering. we have more breaking news, this time on wall street, where a record breaking day has just concluded. the dow, s&p 500, and nasdaq have all closed a new record highs. the dow rose 88 points. the s&p 500 gained 16 points and the nasdaq added 47 points. investors are betting smaller companies will benefit from president-elect trump's plans to

lower taxes and loosen regulations. now to an effort to transform philadelphia's neediest neighborhoods. a local charter announced it's contributing $100 million to help city parks, libraries, recreation centers and playgrounds. the william penn foundation committed the money to the mayor's infrastructure initiative. this is the largest single grant in the state's history. stores are hoping a lot of people come out to a walking tour up and down market street today. delaware's congresswoman-elect joined wilmington's mayor-elect to remind everyone that they don't just have to shop at big box stores. we'll have more on nbc 10 news at 5:00. promising news at the pump leading into the busy travel season. prices are falling.

we found gas going for $2.35 a gallon here in roxborough today, 15 cents higher than the national average of $2.20 a gallon. gas in pennsylvania is averaging $2.37 a gallon. delaware has the cheapest gas in our region with an ambliverage $2.11 a gallon. our local sports teams are doing a lot of work. >> the flyers are helping feed some of the areas' less fortunate. several members of the flyers' alum delivered a truckload of turkeys and fresh food to kensington today. this is the 11th consecutive year the flyers' alumni have made the donation. the sixers are getting an assist for serving a holiday meal to thousands in need. the sixers and play bill farms

donated the turkeys, distinguished out by community of compassion tonight. they fed 5,000 people at last year's event. aaa expects 50 million people will journey 50 miles or more between wednesday and sunday, a million more than last year. the reason? you can thank lower gas prices. the vast may njority of people, more than 89%, will drive for the holiday. depending on where you're going, you may run into that. the first winter storm of the season has buried parts of the northeast. the storm is winding down now, but not before dumping more than a foot and a half of snow in parts of upstate new york, this is just west of rochester. treacherous conditions have led to dozens of stranded trucks and cars on highways there.

and the plows are out in full force in connecticut. this is from norfolk in the northwestern part of the state. parts of the area have more than a foot of snow. we want to get you ready if you're heading out of town for the holiday. >> let's go to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei with the travel forecast. >> it's a pretty good forecast. you may run into some issues depending on when you're heading out over the next few days. if you're heading out soon, the lake-effect snow is still pummelling parts of new york. our area is okay if you're making a drive somewhere close. if you're taking a flight or maybe have a longer drive or a train, let's take a look at what happens over the next couple of days on your hour by hour forecast. we start off this evening. in our region, tuesday looks pretty good. we start at 8:00 a.m., things aren't too bad out there.

through your tuesday here, clouds starting to build by tuesday evening. again, for the most part the area is clear for travel on tuesday. if you're traveling wednesday, a little different situation. we start to see this system developing, bringing some showers over chicago by 8:00 a.m. in the morning. clouds ahead of it, of course. those showers are going to continue to progress along to the east. by 11:00, over cleveland as well as part of the great lakes, even buffalo, some snow tapping into northern parts of pennsylvania. as for your temperatures, going to be cool. 40s for chicago both days with showers on wednesday. cincinnati, the same situation, a little warmer in those mid- to upper 40s. pittsford, if you're driving out, 41 degrees. i think temperatures will start to climb later in the day on wednesday and late into the evening we will start to see showers move through pittsburgh. dry tuesday and wednesday and washington. plenty of sunshine as well. for mt. pocono as well as new york and boston, things should be dry on tuesday and wednesday.

it's not going to warm up that much. it's only going to feel like 39 in philadelphia, 37 in swed swedesboro. it doesn't really warm up over the next couple of days. here we go into wednesday. wednesday morning we're still talking about the 20s. so it is going to be cold for a good while. krystal showed you that system coming in from the west, from chicago. let's see how it affects us for thanksgiving day. there's that rain, a little bit of a wintry mix possible up toward the poconos thursday morning. and then just a few of those showers, as you saw, hanged around. there's not going to be a rainy day. chance of showers by 9:00 a.m. by 3:00 it should stay mostly cloudy. temperatures are below average for this time of the year. it's not as windy, not as cold as what we have been seeing during this day today. over the next five days overall, we'll see the clouds increase

picture. video shows flames shooting high into the air. the couple made it out okay. they purchased the ride-on dump truck as a christmas present for their grandson. both it and the real truck were scorched. toys "r" us has decided to recall the item. the company released a statement saying, out of an abundance of caution we are implementing a stop sale and pulling the item pending further investigation. thousands of local families are getting the thanksgiving dinner they deserve thanks to brown's super stores. today they loaded up 2,000 baskets filled with turkeys and all the fixin's. even the philly fanatic was on hand for today's event. the baskets will be handed out to families in need. thanksgiving is just three days away. >> today preparations continued in new york city for the 90th alan macy's thanksgiving day

to breaking news out of japan, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake has struck. a tsunami warning has been issued although there was no danger of a tsunami on the u.s. west coast, nor hawaii. you may remember there was a disaster at the fukushima nuclear power plant after an earthquake several years ago. this is file video of that plant. it was destroyed by a huge tsunami following an offshore earthquake in 2011. again, a magnitude 7.3 quake has struck off fukushima, japan. we'll continue to monitor the

most bank robberies are now recorded on camera from start to finish. >> the nbc 10 investigators crunch the numbers to examine the facts about bank robberies. investigative reporter george spencer discovers patterns that may affect your next trip to your local bank branch. >> reporter: investigators say these are the faces of bank robbers in action. and looking at the fbi's data and talking to bank robbery experts, we discovered changes and patterns. >> when i started studying bank robberies, there were occasionally women involved. >> reporter: men still commit the vast majority of the crimes. but as of last year, the fbi says more than 8% are women. >> nowadays, it's possible to see one or two women. >> reporter: of more than 4,000 robberies nationwide last year, the fbi data shows the vast majority target bank branch offices in commercial districts,

not the bank's headquarters location. >> the security is pretty good there. >> reporter: the most dangerous day of the week for bank robberies is friday, and the most dangerous time, mornings between 9 and 11:00 a.m. >> they're not crimes with a lot of planning involved in them. >> reporter: not planned and not always committed by someone with a criminal past. only one in every five bank robbers has done it before. the fbi says it's determined that more than 1/3 are users of narcotics. >> what frequently is a characteristic is that one person commits a crime successfully, and then he has learned behavior. so i can do it again and again. >> reporter: and yet most don't get away with huge sums of money. the industry association says the average haul nowadays is a few thousand dollars. but mccree tells us it can be as few as a hundred bucks. he says the crime is about more

responds team. harry hairston is here to bring us up to date. >> they're really heartbroken. you are about to meet a group of customers, their stories are full of pain, disappointment, and hope for closure. >> reporter: denise whipple's mother passed away on january 8th of this year, buried at the same cemetery where her grandparents and father are buried. >> i visit and say so long, until the next time. >> reporter: each time she visits her frustration amounts. she paid lifestone by stefan to engrave her mother's name and date of death on the headstone. >> he told me it would be done in a month. >> reporter: dozens of people have reached out to nbc 10 responds with similar stories. some spoke with us in person, sharing their frustration and experiences with lifestone and other companies operated by the same owner.

>> they make promises and they haven't done anything. >> they've not just taken money. they're breaking hearts. >> reporter: no one at lifestone was available for comment. we tried catching up with the owner at a scheduled court appearance in upper darby. some customers had sued lifestone for not delivering the services it promised. the day we were there, the owner never showed. >> how are you doing, sir, i'm harry hairston with nbc 10 responds. >> reporter: but his lawyer did. >> what does your client plan to do about some of these complaints that people are alleging he owes them thousands of dollars, some have waited months if not close to three years. >> you're saying a whole lot of things that you can't substantiate. so i'm not going to respond. >> reporter: but the receipts we obtained from each name on our list showed they did pay lifestone, or an affiliated company. >> should the public know, should others doing business with him know they may or may not get their property? >> those individuals?

they certainly should. should the public? it's an open hearing. and they can know all that happens in litigation after it happens. not before and not during. afterwards. >> reporter: as we first reported last year, the pennsylvania bureau of consumer protection filed this lawsuit against the company and its owner, greg stefan. at the time the state claimed there were at least 50 plaintiffs. >> are you satisfied with the attorney general's office? >> no. no. it seems to be a system that don't work. >> they seem like they responded the same way the headstone people respond to me. they don't really care. >> reporter: the head of the state's bureau of consumer protection tells us her office is still building its case. until they take the company to court, they can't stop the business from taking on new customers. >> he's allowed to continue doing business until the court tells him to stop. >> reporter: the bureau could seek a temporary injunction, asking a judge to stop stefan's

coatesville, 30 in wilmington. the warmest it feels anywhere in the area is 35. the temperature has been way below average today, a high of 44 so far. the average high is 54. we were 72 on saturday. remember that? another fairly gusty day tomorrow. then the temperature creeps up as we go through the thanksgiving holiday. but we're not even getting close to 60 for quite a while, let alone 70. coatesville is gusting up to 41 miles per hour now. 37 miles an hour in mehlville and 31 in philadelphia. 51-mile-per-hour gusts in harrisburg this afternoon. gusts tomorrow morning favorable substantial, in the 30s. we're not talking about a 40 or 50-mile gust, we're talking about 30, 35. and then later on during the day tomorrow, and into tomorrow night, that's when the wind really dies down. so tomorrow is going to be a

windy day. it's just not going to be as windy as today. here is the system that will be affecting us on thanksgiving. it comes through chicago first, with rain showers. it's warming up in chicago for rain. and that means warmer air will come up this way too. now here we are wednesday night, into thursday morning. there is a little bit of rain coming across pennsylvania. by 11:00 a.m., we're seeing some showers. some computer models have even less rain with this. none of them are suggesting any heavy rain that would be coming out of this system. in philadelphia we start off, it's not going to be all that cold to start off the day thanksgiving. but a possible shower or two. and by afternoon, we're back up into the 50s. some of the suburbs of the lehigh valley will probably stay in the 40s. so it's going to be fairly chilly for thanksgiving. but not as cold as tomorrow. 46 with that sunshine tomorrow. and then wednesday and thursday,

first taste of turkey. we have a pretty good idea what kind of company you can expect at the malls coming up this weekend. those malls will be slightly more crowded than last year. great news, right? at least according to one survey, the national retail federation expects more than 137 million people will go shopping this holiday weekend. and that amounts to about 59% of the entire population of this country. that's up slightly from last year. in fact 135.8 million people went out to shop on thanksgiving weekend. good luck. >> are you included in any of those percentages, jim? >> absolutely. love to shop 'til i drop. even though more people are going to be shopping, some retail experts think businesses will actually make less on black friday. experts say black friday is losing its luster, driven largely by millennials who have different shopping habits. >> the millennials actually like a longer christmas season and
