only fios can. we have new information about why police say this was no accident. and if you're hitting the road today to travel to your thanksgiving destination expect plenty of company, a look at times at the worst time to drive today and tomorrow. and holiday shipping season is already underway to make sure they don't disappear. right now a device explodes and injures a man. police tell us this was no accident. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. they say the system was deliberately targeted. we are live with more on this investigation. what can you tell us?

>> vai, for the better part of an hour now we have been watching as investigators go door to door down pine street. they have been stopping at each apartment trying to make contact with people who live in this area as they try to figure out who left an explosive device far man at his apartment on pine street. it was about 4:00 this morning a 62-year-old man opened a package that had been left for him some time monday night. the victim thought the pack an contained an inhaler. when he opened the package the device was activated and exploded. we learned more about the package itself. we know it was not delivered by the postal service. philadelphia police and bomb squad are involved in this investigation. police are saying there is no doubt about it the device in that package was meant to explode and meant to cause

injury. the 62-year-old was taken to the hospital with injuries to his hands and chest. investigators believe the victim was targeted protectically. we know the injured man was in the kitchen when he opened the package. it is strong enough to cause. the victim shared the first floor apartment with a roommate who witnessed what happened. he was there as that package was being opened. he is now talking to police. investigators are going to continue to follow this investigation throughout the day. we'll have much more on nbc 10 news. i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. a fire broke out in philadelphia. the fire quickly spread. we talked to one neighbor who

saw the fire and feared the worst. >> it was a scary thing. i know she was over there with her family. she has children in the house. i was hoping and praying to god everybody got out safe. >> no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused this fire. thanksgiving travel is shifting into high gear. it will be two of the busiest travel days of the year. jessica boyington is monitoring conditions on the roads. we begin with deanna. >> reporter: as soon as the sun came up, if you're waiting to hit the road don't. right now we are in a lull. however the pennsylvania turnpike commission says that the peak time to travel is still ahead. it starts at about 3:00 this

afternoon. >> we are actually going out. the only reservation they could get was at 3:30. it's fine. i don't care as long as we are together. >> reporter: if togetherness is what they are after they will have it. they didn't know today would be so busy ton roaon the roads. >> i wanted to leave at 4:00 in the morning. >> only six to eight more hours to go. >> how many hours do you have ahead of you? >> i think we have like 40. >> 40 hours? >> yeah, we are going to california. for some the trips they are making is permanent. >> we go a couple of times a year. we go to pennsylvania. we go to bakeries. we get goodies. >> we actually like the qvc out let. >> you're going to pittsburgh? >> yes. stopping in falling water. >> reporter: and rest stops are a necessity as they all head to pittsburgh to see their family.

boyington. at least for 11:05 it looks pretty normal to me. >> yeah, we had a pretty light rush hour believe it or not. it has been okay. it is right around montgomery drive. it is a little slow, 2 minutes of an increase. it is very normal for right now. we are watching construction crews right here. that is headed eastbound and speeds are up into the city right here. we are still not seeing big delays here. two minutes of an increase from the vine. speeds are into the 50s. watch for an accident over to the shoulder right around bridge street. there is a crash on old york road and rydal way. this is through new jersey and this is the ben franklin bridge. no problems or delays. barely a car on the road. >> and a live look right now this morning at 30th street station. amtrak added more trains to

accommodate holiday travelers this week. here is a live look where officials expect today to be the second busiest overall travel day of the year. they say tomorrow will be the third busiest. sunday will be the busiest in terms of arrivals and departures. a mix of clouds and sun today. another cold day across our area. we are giving you a live look here. you can see the wind there flapping that flag. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with our forecast. good morning, glenn. >> good morning. yeah. the wind is still blowing there. not quite as strong as it was yesterday. the combination of way below normal temperatures is still making it feel like winter. a little bit more sunshine than we saw an hour ago. that is pretty much the case across much of the region. a lot of places just barely above 40 degrees.

of course that doesn't tell the whole story. with the wind it feels like it is colder. it feels like 36 in atlantic city and 32 in coatsville and 17 in mount poke -- it is 30 in millville and wild wood. not quite as strong as yesterday but a 30 to 35 miles per hour wind gust. we are talking about temperatures like this. it's not real pleasant. as you go through the afternoon temperatures really not going up very much and with the wind continuing these are sustained winds gusting probably to 30. it will feel like it's below 40 degrees for most of the rest of the day. it gets colder tonight. we'll tell you when it is going to warm up and we do have a couple of chances at precipitation over the holiday weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. we'll see you in a few.

fire destroyed a home. it happened just before 11:00 last night. this is in norris totown. no one was hurt but they continue to investigate and see the possible -- how this fire possibly started. it is 11:09. 44 kr 44 degrees investigators say the fire broke out around 6:00 last night. it was fuelled by high wind and dry conditions. it reportedly burned more than 50 acres of woods. no evacuations. no injuries. officials are looking into what caused the fire. happening now the pennsylvania attorney general has just released a report on the e-mail scandal involving state officials. she lost the probe a year ago. she asked a private law firm swapping explicit e-mails.

current attorney general released the report about a half hour ago. it does not name names. the identities are kept secret. it offers no evidence that the e-mails effected the administration of justice in pennsylvania but he did refer some of the e-mails which had been sent by judges to the judicial conduct board of further review. a teenaged girl is in the hospital after a bullet came through the wall of the great grandmother's kitchen. at least ten shots were fired. the young girl was sitting in the kitchen on the 4,400 block when she was hit in the leg. neighbors say the area is getting too dangerous. >> it's not safe around here. it's not safe nowhere. it's not safe any where. you have to just really watch your back and in and out right now. it's getting cold. stay in the house. police investigating whether

a double shooting is related to this case. they are also looking at surveillance video from clues. this morning in bucks county a church youth group leader is out after he was charged with sex crimes. michael is accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old and trying to assault a 15-year-old inside the oxford valley chapel. they say he whispered to one victim in her ear some day she would call him a -- >> we can't really say anything more than that. >> police are asking any other possible victims to come forward. it is truly a nightmare for any parent but especially a few

a community is grieving after a school bus crashed and wrapped around a tree. children are dead and the bus driver is facing charges sarah has more. >> the scene is a heartbreaking reminder of the young children and dwuzens of others injured monday afternoon when their bus driver swerved off the road. >> we have five confirmed deaths. of those deaths three were in the fourth grade. one was kindergartener an one was a first grader. >> they arrested the 24-year-old driver. >> walker is being charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. >> reporter: of the 37 on board 24 were rushed to the hospital.

here at the hospital several of them are still fighting for their lives in desperate need of blood. it is why they are asking for volunteers to help meet the need. people are coming out in droves to support. >> the most unnatural thing is for the parent to mourn the loss of a child. >> a tragic loss days before thanksgiving even for the ntsb is personal. >> we certainly send our condolences to the parents. my daughter rides a school bus every day. i understand that. we will do everything we can to try to prevent this from happening again. >> they try to determine exactly what caused this tragedy. nbc news. and happening now, a milestone on wall street. this is a live look at the big board. this morning the dow jones industrial average hit 19,000 for the first time.

yeah, vai v, we have a lot 44s on the map. it feels like it's in the 30s in all of these places. it is 36 in atlantic city and 32 in coatsville. it is 34 in allentown and in trenton. we got up to 45 yesterday. we had wind gusts as high as 47 miles per hour. the temperature will be fairly similar but wind gusts are hr in the 30 to 35 miles per hour range. it gets a little bit milder as we head towards black friday. the average high is 54 and we are certainly not going very far above that any time soon. we are seeing gusts up to 30 miles per hour. millville, wild wood right now other places could see that as well.

you can also see the lake effect snows continues in sere up stat york. some clouds have come down from the great lakes. that's what you're seeing in parts of the area now. even those clouds are breaking up a bit. no precipitation with that at all. no threat today. there is the next weather system approaching from the west. it looks a little more impressive now than it will be by the time it gets here. here we are tomorrow night and into thanksgiving morning. starting off dry. the system weakening a little bit as it gets towards harrisburg and perhaps a little bit of light rain or light showers around. it is now looking like the majority of us may not see any rain at all on thanksgiving day. we have a little bit higher chance on friday of some places

getting a little bit of light rain or a couple of rain showers friday afternoon. traveling around the area pittsburgh is likely to see rain showers tomorrow and dry thanksgiving day. it looks fairly dry in the washington area both days. temperatures in the 50s. in the poconos a little bit of rain on thanksgiving day. a possibility it could be a little bit of a wintery mix at the start. most of that is going to be rain too. rain on thanksgiving day in new york city and also in boston, but it's rain and not snow. here is the forecast for thanksgiving itself. it is just a chance of a light shower in the morning. mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon. a little better chances of showers in south jersey and in

police say an explosion was a targeted attack. a package was left for the 62-year-old victim but not delivered by a postal. the victim is in stable condition. a garage fire quickly spread to a near by home this morning. the flames broke out about 1:30 this morning. they evacuated neighboring houses as a precaution. it no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. the pennsylvania attorney general has just released the report on a e-mail scandal. a year ago asked a private law firm to investigate employees who were swapping offensive e-mails. today is one of the busiest travel days of the year. our team coverage of the thanksgiving travel rush continues now. jessica boyington is keeping an

eye on the roads here in the pseudoo studio. we are about to hit the start of peak travel. >> reporter: yes, we are. they say they are waiting to travel, don't. take a look at the roads. very light right now. lighter than a normal average weekday. they say things are going to get busy very quickly. 3:00 today is the start of the peak travel time. this weekend will be busy today, tomorrow and thursday will be your best day to travel if you can wait that long to visit your friends and relatives. throughout the weekend on sunday the busiest travel day of the year. right now we have a mix of early travelers and daily commuters. we talked to folks heading south and as far west as you can get, california. many families looking to be with loved ones this holiday weekend and some are wanting to beat the rush. one family we caught up with was

on the road early this morning. >> i am doing the driving. >> we are going out for dinner for thanksgiving. a lot of us are coming in for the holiday and we said it would be best to go out for dinner. i did bake. i brought some homemade cookies. >> are you off of school today? >> she technically home sick. >> i don't think he is the only one taking a sick day today. judging by the many cars we have seen pulling in here for a break along the turnpike. so 3:00 to 8:00 today busiest time on the east/west turnpike. allentown, somerset will be the busiest. penndot saying they are forecasting very busy travel day tomorrow between 12:00 to 8:00 and all day on sunday as people are heading back home. nbc 10 news. >> thank you. our live team coverage continues now with nbc 10 first

alert traffic reporter. how are the roads looking? >> they are looking normal. that is through center city. we are seeing a little bit of a delay. this is normal right now. so no sense in getting freaked out about getting stuck in traffic around this time. this is where we are on the vine street expressway. you'll be just fine. out in south philadelphia there's traffic lights that are out. broad street so watch there. 95 looks great. it is reported on the southbound side. maybe a three minute increase on the southbound drive time. there is still an accident near old york road. let's check in with new jersey. this is the 42 freeway. barely any cars heading northbound. this is headed southbound or headed here you'll be fine there as well. we'll check in with the bridges.

area. the average high this time of year is in the mid-50s. it does feel like winter, more like winter than fall. we are getting sustained winds now of 21 miles per hour in coatsville. it is 20 in millville too. we'll see gusts to 30 or a little bit above during the afternoon. you can see how we clear out as we go through the afternoon. we are clear during the night tonight. the wind will be diminishing gradually during the night. we go down to 32 degrees in the lehigh valley. we are in the 30s across most of the rest of the area. let you know when our best chances for any rain are during the holiday weekend and when we might warm upcoming up in a few minutes. >> all right. see you in a little bit. we are following breaking news. a short time ago the defense attorney announced the arrest of young. he turned himself into police to

face charges in the september shooting of his son. it happened inside a home near northeast philadelphia. officer young was off duty at the time of the shooting. they say the shooting allowed followed an argument over the use of the family car. >> there's no excuse for what happened that day. young will be held responsible for having shot his son. >> officer young is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other charges. now the transition of president-elect donald trump. he cancelled a planned meeting. the newspaper says the president-elect staff told them that the meeting was back on. earlier trump tweeted he called off the meeting. the times denied that and the president-elect will meet with the publisher off the record and

then on the record. one of president-elect trump's top advisers say the new administration will not conduct more investigations into hillary clinton's private e-mail server. during the second presidential debate he said if he were president mrs. clinton would be in jail. they say the president-elect would not pursue an investigation and would instead help mrs. clinton heal. the transition team released a new two and a half video message from the president-elect. >> our transition team is working very smoothly, efficiently and effectively. truly talented men and women, patriots, indeed, and many will soon be a part of our government helping us to make america great again. >> the event was not open to the media. in the video he reiterates some of the promise ls of his first 100 days of administration

including removing regulations on businesses. he largely steers clear of some of the most controversial campaign promises including building a wall and appealing obamacare. issued a travel alert this holiday season. if you're visiting europe they say to be aware of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks. they say there is credibility information indicating isis and al qaeda mans to continue attacks. the state department says u.s. citizens should be cautious around holiday festivals and out dpts do outdoor markets. they say people should be vigilant while riding public transportation. the biggest earthquake to shake japan. at least 14 people were hurt, three of them seriously. at least two fires broke out as a result of the quake. this quake is actually an

aftershock from that quake five years ago. the 7.4 tremor hit off of the northea northeast northeastern coast. the epicenter left more than 15,000 people dead. that quake spark add devastates tsunami and damaged the reactors of a nuclear power plant. this time the nuclear plant reports no problems. >> get away from the truck. it forced neighbors to evacuate a neighborhood. one neighbor caught the thing on slo video. the fire sfroed a car parked near by. it runs on natural gas and they say a ventilation system prevented it from exploding. no one was hurt. and in the lehigh valley casino resort getting fined more than $20,000 for mixing cards

from different decks. the morning call reporting that the gaming control board penalized after dealers mixed red and blue decks together on two separate occasions. the casino reported the incidents which happened in june of 2015 and february of this year. no one was fire department. happening today president obama will present the presidential medal of freedom to bruce springsteen. also among those receiving medals besides the boss, tom hanks and robert deniro and michael jordan will be hon in order as well as ellen degene s degeneres. researchers looked at mri scans of healthy children before and after the kids studied music

our 40 just changed. live temperatures. 38 degrees here, 40 in allentown, 39 in easton. we have northwest winds continuing. 30 miles per hour in millville. we'll see gusts like that or a little bit above during the afternoon, perhaps up to the mid-30s and watch what happens as we go through tonight. by midnight the strongest wind any where should be 20 to 25 miles per hour. by tomorrow morning the strongest winds would be in the teens. by thursday morning, look at this, 4 miles per hour for your peak wind gusts on thanksgiving morning. not exactly going to be a problem with wind on thanksgiving, is it? well, the wind is creating this mess in new york state. the cold air coming over the warm lakes creating this lake

effect monster snow. over 2 feet of snow in parts of the area. we just have lake effect clouds that have come in and you can see them moving from northwest to southeast. it is not producing any kind of precipitation. now, as we go through the next couple of days we showed you one computer model. this is a different one. it tends to exaggerate the precipitation a little bit. it also shows the rain and wintery mix and snow. you can see how far north that area goes. a little bit of light snow in up state new york for thanksgiving morning. that's about it. really not much in the way of precipitation during thanksgiving day itself. here we are thursday night into black friday. we are seeing a little patch of some rain. a little bit of light rain. a couple of light showers.

we are not talking about much of an issue here. as we go through the next couple of days look at these temperatures. if you're traveling areas that can often get snow at this time of the year like chicago and cincinnati and pittsburgh they will be way above freezing. we are not going to have an issue with any of that for travel nlts you go way to the north. cloudy skies. a chance of a sprinkle thursday. friday afternoon we are windy over the weekend and the next shot of rain is in the middle of next week. we'll be right back.

people dropped off turkeys and cash donations for the annual turkey drop. giant food stores are accepting donations for the less fortun e fortunate. they collected more than 9,000 turkeys last year and hoping to get even more this year. and today at 3:00 it's day two of the 12 days of give aways. sting will perform on the ellen show. the city of philadelphia tears down hundreds of dangerous properties. the owners are supposed to pay
