holiday. the art of the deal. from clothes to electronics, we'll tell you which days you'll find the lowest prices for the items on your holiday shopping list. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. the great getaway. see all those headlights in bumper to bumper traffic? they're signaling the beginning of the holiday travel season. happy thanksgiving eve. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. that's what it looked like at the height of the evening rush. here's what it looks like now. this is i-95 at the gerard point bridge. traffic is not as heavy now, but there are still plenty of cars out on the road. there will be even more traffic in a few hours as people head to their thanksgiving destinations. >> here's a live look at another busy spot. philadelphia international airport. triple-a says more than 3 million americans will be flying during this holiday. >> let's head to 30th street station. amtrak calls this the busiest travel week of the year. but the railroad says it's prepared. >> no matter your plans for trafg, the weather is going to play a crucial role and there's

a chance we so see some showers for the holiday. that's why our live team coverage begins with sheena parveen. >> we do have showers on the way for part of your thanksgiving. we could see a few try to sneak in later tonight. for the most part, i think we're in the clear. we still have rain and snow off to our west. we basically just expect the rain from it. as far as our temperatures are concerned, the only area that could see a mix is in the higher elevations. maybe the lehigh valley. very slight chance of that. for the rest of the area, we're fairly dry. some light rain offshore. as we go into very early tomorrow morning, if we see precip move in early enough, the lehigh valley, berks county, poconos could see a slight chance of freezing rain very early. then it would be transitioning over to some rain showers. right now temperatures are too warm for that. 45 in philadelphia. 43 wilmington. 41 in allentown. as we go into the morning hours tomorrow, we'll be right around the mid-to-low 40s by 7:00 a.m. your thanksgiving morning forecast looking cloudy.

going to be, i'll tell you what. tomorrow morning, going to be a heck of a lot worse than this based on what i've heard from people i talked to tonight. for now we're live along the schuylkill expressway, keith jones, nbc10 news. >> drivers in new jersey will see an increased police presence on the roads this afghanistan weeke -- thanksgiving weekend. it includes a stepped up presence in ocean count where numerous dwi checkpoints will be set up. a dozen people were killed in crashes in new jersey over the thanksgiving weekend last year. to bucks county where this man you're going to see right here accused of preying on a 12-year-old girl he met in church. only nbc10 was there as police walked him out in handcuffs. >> police say the man sexually assaulted the girl more than a dozen time and that he is in the country illegally. nbc10's brandon hudson reports from bensalem. >> reporter: it was here in district court that we last saw jorge ram irers before he went to jail for sex assault charges. police paperwork says this all began when the 12-year-old

victim's family discovered ramirez bought this young girl a cell phone so the two could text each other. nbc10 was the only tv crew outside as police walked jorge ramirez out of district court in bensalem. the 33-year-old avoided eye contact and our questions about his alleged sexual encounters with a 12-year-old girl. >> he's going to be in bucks county prison for the holidays as least. >> reporter: bensalem police say ramirez met the young girl in a church in october. we went to the church tonight where the pastor said he noticed ramirez's strange behavior, but is still shocked by this news. >> we have to be more cautious now, and we don't want that to happen again at church. >> reporter: according to the criminal complaint, ramirez had sexual contact with the victim at least a dozen times after she got out of school. it allegedly happened in the parking lot of robert k. schaffer middle school in bensalem. since ma requi

since ramirez is here illegally, he faces deportation back to honduras. police believe there may be more victims. >> if we have more victims, we want to get them help and counseling. we want to make sure this guy stops and never hurts another child again. >> reporter: police did notify the bensalem school district. we reached out to the superintendent for a comment but have not heard back. in bensalem, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. a woman is sent to the hospital, the victim of an apparent sexual assault in philadelphia. police say the 27-year-old was found bleeding from her head in the lower level of the love park parking garage on jfk boulevard just before noon. police say she was allegedly attacked by a man and then sexually assaulted. we spoke to a woman who uses the garage on a regular basis who says it's a safety issue. >> i feel unprotected because there's never any police down in there. no security or anything. so it concerns me now. >> the victim checked herself out of thomas jefferson

university hospital against medical advice. president-elect donald trump is making his cabinet more diverse. today he selected two women for key positions. south carolina governor nikki haley will become mr. trump's ambassador to the united nations. the two-term governor is the first woman in the state's history to hold that position. haley is the daughter of immigrants from india. she has limited foreign policy experience. and trump has chosen betsy devos to be his education secretary. she's an outspoken advocate for charter schools, the national teachers union was swift in its opposition to the pick saying devos has push aid corporate agenda to privatize public schools. these are the first women mr. trump has chosen for his cabinet. his previous picks are white men. the president-elect delivered a thanksgiving message today saying he's enlisting the help of the entire nation to succeed in his presidency. >> it's my prayer that on this thanksgiving, we begin to heal

our divisions and move forward as one country, strengthened by shared purpose and very, very common resolve. >> the president-elect also said tensions from the election will not heal overnight, but now is the time for the country to start to come together. a montgomery county man is facing charges after police say he left a racist death threat at a local casino. it happened last month at parks casino in bensalem. police say the suspect left a death threat that included the n-word scrawled on a piece of paper inside a room that was being prepared for the bucks county naacp. he is facing ethnic intimidation and other charges. he is due in court next month. sad news to report out of tennessee tonight where a sixth child died tonight from injuries in a school brus crash in chattanooga. more than three dozen elementary school students were on the bus monday when it swerved off the road and plowed into that tree there. federal investigators say the driver was not on a designated route, but it's unclear tonight why. witnesses say the bus was going

faster than the posted 30-mile-per-hour limit. five other children are still in the hospital tonight. a family is bracing for their first holiday without their 8-year-old daughter. today relatives of jay ana pool march toed intersection in overbrook where she was killed last friday. pool was walking home from school with her older brother when a driver hit her and took off. her mom is hoping today's march inspires a witness to come forward. >> just hoping that maybe you keep hearing us, you keep seeing us. you feel my pain, you'll come forward. >> tonight police released this picture of the car that hit jaianna. it is a silver nissan maxima or altima. it should have damage to one front headlight and the front grille area. danger in the trunk. a man bursts out of hiding, trying to ambush a police officer. what started the confrontation,

fugitive in idaho. police dash cam video shows the whole thing unfold. the officer pulled a vehicle over, which matched the description of one being driven by a man wanted for assault. suddenly the trunk opens and a man tries to get out. the officer managed to wrestle the man to the ground and take the suspect into custody. an update on the investigation into a package explosion inside a center city apartment. today we learned the identity of the victim. a co-worker identifies him as 60-year-old catering worker jm l alden. he was injured after a package that was left on his doorstep exploded when he tried to open it. federal agents are fast tracking this investigation, sending the remnants of the bomb to a lab for testing. a federal judge is ordering pilots for a cargo airline that delivers packages for amazon and dhl back to work. about 250 pilots for abx air went on strike tuesday. they claim they are short staffed and being overworked. the airline went to court to block the strike, saying it would cause irreparable damage.

the judge said it's in the public's interest to end the strike. and this holiday season, there's some backlash over stores opening on thanksgiving. >> in our area, some malls are open on the holiday. others are staying closed. let's start with the ones that are open. starting at 6:00 tomorrow night, king of prush ra mall, philadelphia mills mall in the northeast, philadelphia premium outlets, christian anna in newark, delaware, all open. also deptford mall. not open on thanksgiving, morristown mall in south jersey, and plymouth meeting mall. they're both staying closed this thanksgiving but will open at 6:00 a.m. on black friday. now f you'd rather stay home away from those crowds, you won't be missing all the deals. >> retail experts say black friday has the best deals on tvs, drones, and home appliances, but cyber monday is great for electronics, beauty products and kitchenware. the deepest discounts on toys come during the second week of december. but be warned, the hottest items

could be sold out by then. you don't want that to happen. well, thanksgiving is a time for giving back, and that effort is already well under way tonight. >> nbc10's drew smith reports from university city, where community members gathered for a common goal. >> reporter: it's a tradition now in its 16th year. >> these are just not my friends, right? these are my brothers. these are my family, and i'm blessed. >> reporter: matthew started this in 2000 when the phi kappa sigh fraternity decided to feed the homeless on the night before thanksgiving. he's no longer a student, but he keeps coming back. >> this fits very well with our mission and our motto. >> reporter: the prep work began at 6:00 a.m. on all 17 floors of this residence hall at drexel university. cooking nonstop except when the smoke alarms went off. >> false alarm. so we had to evacuate and then come back in and keep going. >> reporter: the long day all leads up to this moment. the fraternity members and their friends serving the homeless at

a church. >> this city has given us so much. drexel has given us so much. at some point in your life, you have to come back and give that back. >> reporter: tomorrow, many plan to sit for a similar meal with their immediate family, but they now consider these people family too. >> it's good to help when you can because tomorrow it could be you that needs the help. >> reporter: in addition to serving the 100 homeless people down here, this group also brought box dinners to employees at the philadelphia 911 center. in university city, i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. >> so nice. well, one last reason to whine this thanksgiving. >> it's thanks to a new law which is making things easier on shoppers this year. according to the pennsylvania liquor control board, 140 grocery store as cross the state are now selling wine. nbc10 was at the giant in halvertown today. it is one of nearly two dozen giant stores with wine on its shelves. officials say the move was made to make pricing more competitive and bring in more money to the state. >> sticking with that theme, we

won't be wihining about the weather too much tomorrow. >> really it could be a lot worse, but we're not going to have bad weather. we just have a few showers in the forecast. so for tonight if you're still going to be traveling late, we're mostly dry but still can roll out a few showers in the morning tomorrow. then we go in through the afternoon. mostly cool, mostly cloudy, and the spotty showers will be around early in the day. it's not going to be a washout. i don't think it will be anything to affect your travel. but just be aware that we do have some showers in the forecast. i'll show you that in just a second on our future weather. but then as we go into friday for the black friday shoppers, mostly cloudy but looking primarily dry. it will still be a cool day but temperatures back into the mid-50s. right now we're in the mid-40s. mount pocono is the only spot below freezing. 42 in atlantic city right now. but the lehigh valley and also berks county as well as the

poconos, those are areas we'll be watching closely by about sun rise. off to our west, that's the weather system we're watching to move in for part of your day tomorrow. again, i don't think it's going to be a big deal, but don't be surprised if you see a couple rain showers. locally we have the clouds around, but we are fairly dry out there. again, that's light chance of freezing rain for the lehigh valley, berks county, into very early tomorrow. even the poconos. if we see precip move in early enough. there could be a pretty quick cutoff time with our temperatures as well. again, we'll watch that. by tonight, the overnight hours, the clouds continue. but then early tomorrow, that's when we see some of this rain getting quite a bit closer. 7:00 a.m., some spotty showers around. about noon tomorrow, we could still see some spotty showers around. so i think the first half of the day is the best chance for any rain showers. they look to be primarily light. this does not appear to be anything heavy at all. clearing through the evening and

the first family is putting others first on this thanksgiving eve. the obama family helped serve dinner to homeless veterans in washington, d.c. tonight. president obama dished out the turkey while the first lady was in charge of the beans and spinach, and sasha handed out the mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. while the president was dishing out the turkey tonight, he also sbared two birds from making to a dinner table this evening. >> president obama saved a 40 pound turkey named tater, and an alternative turkey named tot.
