denise nakano. fidel castro is one of the era's most globalizing figures, reactions to his death range from mourning to celebration. on the left mourning in cuba. the nation has declared nine days of national mourning and on the right, the opposite reaction in miami. people there celebrating in the streets today. during fidel castro's rule thousands of cubans escaped the communist island to freedom in florida. we bring coverage with nbc 10's chris pollone. >> thousands poured into the streets of miami's little havana as news of fidel castro's death spread. a day many cuban/americans have anticipated for years. >> i'm 34 years old. i've been waiting all my life for this moment. >> castro's rice to power tore families apart. millions fled the island as the communist dictator seized the press and jailed dissidents. >> this something that we're celebrating because he has

york. the u.s. and cuba have had an icy relationship for more than five decades. and early 1961, president eisenhower closed the u.s. embassy in havana and severed diplomatic relations with cuba because of castro's close ties to the soviet union. months later the world was brought to the brink of nuclear war after president kennedy ok'd a failed u.s.-backed invasion of cuba. and only last year president obama reopened a u.s. embassy there. now many cuban-americans around the country and here at home are hoping castro's death brings about change. reporter christian cassadas from telemundo 62 talks to one south jersey lead another claims castro changed her family forever. >> what castro has done to my family is separated my family. >> she says the reason she's in the you sats is because of fidel

castro after her parents fled a communist cuba. >> my parents couldn't go back and forth to cuba. if my grandmother was dying, my father couldn't see her. they separated a family and brought a lot of pain. >> pain she says was her fuel when she came to this new country from her home tone of colon. now making history along the way as the first spanish woman to serve in public office in mercer county. her smile isn't the only one. >> it was something surreal, i waited my whole entire life for this man to pass. >> inside this cuban restaurant, the feeling of hope and a new beginning reflected on their smiles as the business is serving one free drink in light of what's to come. >> it's kind of a little anticlimactic, because he's out of power essentially for ten years, but something that cuban exile community has been waiting for for close to 60 years. >> a change this local leader says was surreal as she explained what was happening to her children.

inside. after searching the woods behind the home, police found the suspect dead. >> i've never seen so many police and swat and -- >> were you afraid when you heard he had a lot of weapons? >> yes. we've been afraid of him for a long time. >> it's not clear what prompted the standoff. police say they visited the house previously for a nuisance call. a man's body floating in the body near the market street bridge around 10:00 a.m., he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. so far police are not saying who he is or how he died. two people are in the hospital following a shoot-out involving police in kensington. authorities say two officers were on patrol on clementine street at 10:30 when they saw a man tuck a gun into his waistband. police chased the man and they say he started firing and police

top winds sustained wind speed, 22 miles per hour today in philly and top wind gusts northwesterly. 30 miles per hour. if you look at the bottom of your screen. you will see your local neighborhood forecast, it is quiet, it is dry. but we do have some rain on the way. much-needed rain of course i have more information coming up in the full forecast. denise, back to you. >> nearly three weeks after her election defeat, hillary clinton's campaign is now getting behind an election recount effort. clinton's camp announced saturday it intends to back the recount in the battleground state of wisconsin. that effort was spearheaded by green party presidential candidate jill stein. the recount was put into motion friday after stein raised more than $5 million for the effort. and now the recount process could begin as soon as next week. stein also wants a recount in michigan and in pennsylvania. >> now clinton leads the national popular vote over president-elect donald trump by nearly two million votes. but mr. trump picked up 290

good point, thank you. that's not just about small business saturday,s it's a busy shopping day at stores all over our region. nbc 10 and a crowded cherry hill mall today. a spokesperson telling us it was a businesser-than-normal saturday and great deals are still out there. since many retailers have extended their black friday promotions through the weekend. >> my daughter had some spending money. wanted to get some good deals on sales. i got a few things as well. >> most malls are open until 10:00 tonight and of course, there's always tomorrow as well. many people are spending this weekend shopping for gifts. but others are getting into the holiday spirit with some shopping of a different kind. families flocked to villa orchards in delaware county in search of the perfect christmas tree. and there certainly were plenty to choose from. if you have not gotten your tree just yet, don't forget to measure the space before you go shopping. so you'll know exactly what size you need. eagles safety malcolm jenkins

kids will stay warm this winter. thanks to operation cold war for kids. members of the local chapters of alpha phi alpha fraternity. the fraternity raised more than $3,000 and 70 kids got to pick out new winter gear at burlington coat factory in center city. >> it did feel like coat weather today. >> with the wind gusts today. so definitely a breezy day today. breezy day tomorrow. but the big story denise is that we desperately need rain and the good news is mother nature will provide that. i'm going to go into our futurecast outlook. we have a system moving in from the ohio valley. it will continue to work through overnight monday into tuesday. bringing us plenty of rain. i do think we could see over an inch and a half of rain just on tuesday alone. a second system develops out of the gulf, i notice it's southwesterly there. so temperatures are not going to be the issue. in fact it's going to be pretty warm on tuesday and wednesday. but the good news is, we are going to get the much-needed rain. everything clearing by the second half of thursday.
