president-elect donald trump busy on twitter, slamming hillary clinton, blasting efforts to recount votes, even claiming, though, that fraud cost him the popular vote. nbc's hallie jackson is over at trump tower here in manhattan. hallie, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi there, matt, good morning to you. this morning, the president-elect is back home from the holiday, back in new york, and back online, tweeting those accusations of voter fraud without evidence, all of it as the drama over his cabinet selections heats up. his election allegations unsubstantiated and unproven. the president-elect undeterred. tweeting he "won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally." a claim spread by some conspiracy theorist websites without evidence. donald trump claiming voter fraud nationally, and in three states specifically. virginia, new hampshire, and

california. the president-elect's transition team has not clarified what exactly he's talking about, but it is clear why he's talking. seemingly irritated by an election recount set in motion by the green party presidential candidate, jill stein, in wisconsin. and maybe two more battlegrounds soon. hillary clinton's campaign now joining in, making clear they didn't start the battle, nor do they expect it to change the results. clinton's campaign lawyer tweeting overnight, ""we are getting attacked for participating in a recount that we didn't ask for by the man who won election but thinks there was massive fraud." the president-elect trying to use clinton's own words against her. in another tweet, citing this moment from november 9th. >> -- then we must accept this result and then look to the future. >> it is a total and complete hypocritical joke that the group of people that thought that they were nervous about president-elect trump not conceding are the people that are conducting recounts in states where we won by over

68,000 votes. >> reporter: one of the president-elect's top aides in an implicit recount rebuke referencing a 45-minute conversation between donald trump and president obama this weekend. >> there is a respect for the process and the peaceful transition of power, which is why this recount by jill stein and now the hillary people is just so confounding and disappointing. >> reporter: kellyanne conway, one of trump's key voizers, also making an unusually public push against mitt romney, a former never-trump leader, now one of the contenders for secretary of state, along with rudy giuliani. >> i'm also part of unity but i'm not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position. >> reporter: so about those comments. two top transition aides tell msnbc that the president-elect is now apparently furious at that action, at those comments, with other aides saying they are baffled about the very public discussion over that secretary of state position, matt and savannah. donald trump will be having more

meetings here at trump tower today. >> hallie, before you go, go back to this recount situation for a second. first of all, at this moment, what's the likelihood it happens, and what's the likelihood it makes any difference? >> reporter: okay. so let me take that in two parts. likelihood that it happens? listen, recounts, remember, are state by state, not nationally. so in wisconsin right now you have a series of local clerks who are figuring out how much a recount would cost. then if the green party can cover those expenses, which jill stein says she can, then you will see the recount set into motion. in wisconsin at least the possibility of two other states, maybe pennsylvania and michigan on the way. as far ars the lis the likeliho changes anything, extraordinarily slim. even if something were to slip in wisconsin, you'd still need two other states to flip as well, pennsylvania and michigan for hillary clinton to, for example, take the presidency. again, very, very slim chances. >> also a tight, tight timeline in some of these states, right,

hallie? >> reporter: yeah. wisconsin has a deadline set by the state of december 13th to get this recount finished. many sof these municipalities are warning they'll have to work nights and weekends to get this done, if it does happen. today is the deadline to trigger a recount in penn pen and wednesday in michigan where that vote margin is the closest at about 10,000 votes. >> hallie, thank you very much. also this morning, official tributes are under way in cuba following the death of the controversial former leader, fidel castro. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is in havana this morning. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. cubans will be lining up to pay their respects today in revolution square in vhavana honoring the founder of their revolution and his controversial legacy. preparations for ceremonies today where fidel castro will be honored before his remains are carried through the island's provinces more than 500 miles to

their final resting place sunday in a mausoleum built for this day. at the university of havana, students hell their own memorials. >> i think that fidel castro was a good man. he always fought for the right of cuban people. >> reporter: across the city, a dramatically different point of view. human rights protesters known as the ladies in white saying state security police warned them to stay home this week instead of holding their weekly march. so will things change under raul now that fidel has gone, or is everything the same? she says nothing will change. the dictator raul castro will continue his war. having to battle 11 american presidents, castro's presidency was noted in strikingly different ways by president obama around president-elect trump. obama praising castro saying history will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.

where government forces have recaptured a key part of eastern aleppo. the area's been held by rebels for the last four years. human rights officials say over the past few days, syrian forces have captured some ten neighborhoods putting nearly 30% of aleppo under government control. thousands of civilians fled eastern aleppo over the weekend to escape what is very heavy fighting. here at home, the army corp of engineers says it has no fla plans for forcible removable of demonstrators who have been camping out in north dakota protesting the pipeline. they were notified they'd need to leave federal lands by december 5th. the court citing increased violence between protesters and law enforcement and the increasingly harsh winter conditions there. protesters say the request will only escalate tensions. now to a deadly shooting in new orleans' popular french quarter that sparked panic on a crowded bourbon street. this morning police are searching for two suspected

gunmen. here's kelsey davis from our nbc affiliate in new orleans. >> reporter: this morning, stunning in you video capturing the frantic moments when a spryf of gunfire released chaos in one of the most popular regions in the country. new orleans, suddenly the big uneasy. a night of fun turning into bloodshed on the world famous would your bon street. >> somebody shot. he's over there on the ground. >> i got one shot in the chest. i got one shot in the hands. i got another one shot someone else i can't tell right now and i need that ems asap. >> reporter: the mass shooting leaving one dead and nine others injured. >> we don't believe that any of the victims who were shot were the intended targets. >> reporter: investigators say the violence erupted early sunday morning when an argument between two men escalated into a shoot-out sending revellers running for their lives. now the search is on for the suspects who managed to get away despite a ramped-up police presence in place for the holiday weekend.

>> this is a very active, robust investigation. we are continuing to work every angle very aggressively. >> reporter: police identifying the victim as 25-year-old man from brooaton rouge. his tragic death serving as an eerie remind egg toinreminding that happened. >> this continues to put an exclamation point on the death and destruction that gun violence has played on the streets of new orleans. >> reporter: new orleans mayor promising to increase police presence to keep new orleans safe during the holiday season. and this morning, as people are starting to wake up in new orleans, of course the shooting still fresh on everyone's mind. in fact, there is a makeshift memorial growing on the corner of bourbon where that shooting happened. as the family and friends of

election recount in wisconsin and perhaps two other states. jury selection begins again today in the federal trial of dylann roof. the man accused of killing nine members of a church in charleston, south carolina. the trial was postponed earlier this month but last week roof was declared competent to stand trial. powerball officials hope the latest jackpot winner will come forward today. one winning ticket from saturday night's drawing worth $421 million was sold in lafayette, tennessee. now to the mysterious abduction of a young mother out in california. sherri papini was found alive three weeks after she vanished from a jog. now police are stepping up the search for whoever might have kidnapped her. gadi schwartz has the latest on this. >> reporter: detectives think she was kidnapped right here. missing sign is still up. now it says found, thank you, and welcome home, this as investigators focus in on the search for two women who may

have abducted her here, held her three thr for three weeks, then dropped her off over 150 miles away. this is the dark stretch of california highway where drivers saw a frantic sherri papini on the side of the road, shackled and waving for help. she told investigators she had been kidnapped and held by two armed women described as hispanic. >> she is heavily battered. it is a confirmed kidnapping. >> reporter: over the weekend detectives combed the area trying to find any surveillance video the dark suv believed to have been driven by the captors. but the closest building to where she was found was this church where members say there wasn't much video to see. >> they didn't find anything. >> reporter: the sheriff says so far they've only spoken to papini once in person. >> she had injured. then she was transported to a local area hospital in the

yellow county sacramento area, treated for her non-life threatening injuries, then released. >> reporter: papini is now reunited with her husband who the sheriff sass was ruled out early in it the investigation as a person of interest after passing a lie detector test. her family grateful for the return and the public support but her sister asking for privacy. >> i am just concerned with the healing of my sister. >> reporter: meanwhile in the several days since papini was found, no new descriptions of the two female kidnappers and no new information on their possible motives. >> have you seen anything that would make you think this was anything but a kidnapping? >> to this point? absolutely not. >> reporter: at last check, over 20 search warrants had been filed. many of them still under seal. 400 hips have been investigated and the sheriff is still asking anyone with information to please come forward. matt and savannah? >> gadi schwartz, thank you very much. back to al checking on the

continuation of this very public battle with scientology. why? >> well, i think it is important. i sat back when you left the church, i wrote my book and i thought i was done. but i was watching what was happening to former members and former high-ranking clergy of the church. i was watching what the church was doing in response. and i just felt i had a responsibility to help out where i could and i'm not a big fan of bullies, so it is part of who i am and i was a fighter in the church. this is what they taught me. and so i'm going to continue my fight. but i'm on the right side of that fight now. i just want to send the message that i'm just not going to sit back and allow it to go on. people are talking about their experiences of physical abuse, mental abuse. to it be called a liar, to victimize victims is not okay with me. >> obviously the church denies the allegations. who do you hope sees this? who is this for? >> well, it is for the victims.

it is for the people who have spoken out, but it is also for people who just maybe don't have the strength to fight, feel they don't have a voice. it doesn't -- i'm getting a thumbs up back there. so it's really -- i just want to give people strength and not just with this organization but with any bully. i just hope that that's what the message is. >> the first episode gets into your story, what happened to you. you were a member of this church since you were a little girl. >> most of my life. >> what was it like to leave? >> well, it's difficult to leave. but again, i am on tv because i was an actress and i have a lot of support. so for me, it pales in comparison to what former high-ranking executives had to deal with and what parishioners had to deal with, just average, every day scientologists who dedicated their lives, money and families to this.

now they're suffering for speaking out. >> i think that's something that a lot of people who hear about this think, i don't understand. like if you're in any other church, you don't want to be in it anymore, you just leave. >> right. well, that's the difference here is that if you speak out, you're labeled an enemy to the church and the church has policies on how to deal with its enemies. and they go after them. it's in their own policies. so they don't know any different, as i did when i was if the church. so i understand this. i have compassion for it. because you do become a person who's very hateful and you're very judgmental towards anyone who isn't a scientologist. and a critic of sign tollby is dealt with in a very specific way. and that is unlike a real church. >> the church says it doesn't disconnect families or encourage people -- >> well, they're sly. they are sly in that they are right about there is no "policy"

of disconnection as it's categorized in the press. because if you're not in it your whole life you don't actually know the inner workings of their policies. and their policy is very specific about how you deal with someone who has spoken out about the church of scientology, and there is no option but to disconnect or you will get kicked out of the church. now for members who were in it their whole lives, this is an every day proposition. this is a quarter of a million dollar proposition for just average parishioners. the dedication it takes to be a scientologist is a lot. and it's not easy to just walk away. because most people say, why not just get up and leave? well, you're leaving everything you've ever known. you're giving up your whole life because that is what it takes to be a scientologist. then you're going to be losing your family because most of your family and friends are scientologists. >> the church has issued lengthy statements about this documentary. i know you're familiar with

them. in fact, your lawyer wrote back to them and said, you've inflicted damage on leah and ask for $1.5 million. the church said that amounts to extortion. >> sure. >> we put the whole statement on today.com, in fairness. what do you say to that accusation that you're in it for money? >> well, i'm not going to get a dime. i've given millions to the church and they have amassed $3 billion. so i think that speaks for itself. i also think it says a lot about the organization, how they respond to its critics. it's not just me. it's anyone who has spoken up. everyone is called a liar. everyone is called an apostate. everyone is called the same thing. and i'm in good company. they did it to anderson cooper. they did it to an award winning filmmaker. they did it to an oscar winner. im's in good company. >> did you ever think i don't know if i want to do this?

either shoppers are just getting warmed up or they're all tapped out there are. >> i think they're just getting warmed up. they are projecting 122 million people will shop online today. that's a bump from last year and they're expecting $3.36 billion in sales. that would beat black friday which came if at 3.34 billion mr. but it is a tight race. >> so when you go online today and you are looking for bargains, are you going to find prices that are better than you could have found on black friday? >> it depends where you're shopping. we've got different sales today. some of them are not quite as good. some of them are better. we're seeing more sales that are site-wide sales. so 50% off at the gap plus an extra buck. 50% off at banana republic. 40% off j. crew. the one people are most excited about is 15% off target, plus you get the extra bump if you use the credit card. >> is this all day long or certain hours? >> again, it depends.

we'll talk about the site apps in just a second. but there are different sales that will roll out through the day, particularly on sites like amazon. >> let's say i'm going to do some shopping. what are the items that i simply have to buy today? >> if you are looking for one of those 4k tv, deals are pretty good again, like on black friday. same with computers. you'll get slightly different models. with these electronics, it is very important to check reviews and features just to make sure you are getting a good one. we're starting to see really deep dives on winter apparel. boots have been very big this holiday season. books. and lots of travel deals. >> airfare, hotels, those sort of things. >> particularly airfare if you are trying to fly overseas, deals to europe. expedia is rolling out a lot of deals on its app. >> say i go online, buy an item, i think i've gotten a great price. how do i know i've gotten the lowest possible price? >> i like an app called camel camel camel. >> why?

why? why? >> because it tracks historical prices on amazon which is a very good barometer. you'll see if it's ever been sold at a lower price. but you also want to make sure that you're doing all of these things, because people are contacting you in different ways. they're rolling out their deals through e-mails, on social media, and on their own particular apps. all about downloading their app. >> we can't talk about the good without talking about the possible bad. in addition to great deals out there today, there's fraud out there. how do you make sure you're not caught up in it? >> let's talk about those apps specifically. in the app store we've had a big problem this holiday season with fraudulent apps. you want to make sure that when you download an app to shop at a particular merchant, you're getting the real app. you can tell because the real app won't have reviews or faulty english. it will have reviews. if you've got no reviews on an app at all, that's a problem. and if you don't see any previous versions of an app, that's also a sign.

this is kind of back to his roots, in a way. i would call this front-runner to win best picture oscar. the other movie is "fences." this is the movie adaptation of another play. viola davis and denzel washington. give her viola davis the best supporting actress now. >> i saw denzel's performance on broadway. just unbelievable. >> both of them are incredible. denzel directed it, too, by the way. >> my list is very unusual, i think. i saw "nocturnal animals." it is super dark. it's emotional roller coaster. it is all kinds of levels of not holiday but it is so amazing. it's -- my heart was pounding. jake gyllenhaal, phenomenal. it is an all-star cast.

few months we found out she's been diagnosed with stage 4 hotchkins lymphoma. so it is sad -- but -- but, through it all it's become very inspiring. her spirit, her fire is crazy. her joy. she's lost her hair through the chemo, but she's in the 85 percentile of beating it. my mother has multiple sclerosis. now with "bounce back" bigger than a movie. i've partnered with children's miracle network hospitals so we are raising money and awareness to help her and her bills and her treatment but we're aware of millions of other kids so i'm going around the country to different hospitals meeting these kids, giving them the hugs, giving them the pound and letting them know that me and the children's miracle network are going to raise money so that they make it to see another day. >> it is a movement.
