>> speaking out, the message from a man who survived a bombing at his home in center city. preparing for the worst. only nbc 10 gets the firsthand look at how local officers are being trained to fight back against a school shooter. round two. another line of storms is heading our way that could pose problems for your morning commute. right now the skies have cleared after a day of nearly nonstop rain, but it won't last long. >> earlier today downpours dredged people from pennsylvania to delaware. the wet weather stretched out both the morning and evening rainshower.

a look at round two for the wet weather. >> it will be coming in from kentucky and tennessee. right now we've cleared out of all the rain we had earlier today. what we are watching is down to our south and west. it will be giving some relief to areas that have seen some of the wildfires that we were telling you about earlier. philadelphia is the lowest. mostly coming at a quarter mile visibility. the rest of the area right now seems to be fine. as we go overnight tonight we will be seeing the thicker fog forming. for tonight fog is forming. the showers continuing to end across the area. mostly just damp outside now. overnight tonight the fog will become dense, and we're talking about visibility close to zero for many parts of the area, and for your commute tomorrow morning, dense fog with scattered showers rolling in.

most of the things -- he can thank the people that helped him out so far. >> reporter: covered in shrapnel scars on his face and chest. in a heavily bandaged hand. this is our first look at jim holden since he survived a bombing on the day he says changed his life. one week ago today police say he opened an envelope addressed to him, and the contents inside exploded. it happened inside his apartment on pine street. philadelphia police and federal authorities are still investigating. he said what i want to say at this point is how overwhelmed i have been at the outpouring of love and support that i have received from my partners, family, friends, and co-workers. this is how his loved ones remember him. showing his contagious smile. those same friends set up a you caring website to raise money to help pay for his medical and

insurance costs. aldon said of his recovery, "at this point i only know that i have a long road ahead of me, and i will likely be unable to work for quite some time." at last check the fundraising site has raised more than $18,000. the person responsible for that bombing has not been caught. live in center city, i'm brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. police are searching for a gunman tonight after a man was shot and killed in front of his west philadelphia home. we're told the 56-year-old victim was returning home from shopping just before 8:00 tonight. that's when he was shot near 41st street and westminster avenue. police believe the victim was targeted by the gunman, but there's no word tonight on a motive. we had breaking news last night. two men shot and killed the 14-year-old. nbc 10 joins us live from philadelphia. i know investigators are trying to get to the bottom of this.

what's the latest? >> investigators are back out in the neighborhood looking for clues, and tonight they interviewed a 16-year-old who was with the victim when he was shot and killed. tonight they're also looking into the possibility that the victim may have been targeted. >> i can't even imagine what it would be like to lose a child. >> reporter: the pain runs deep for friends and neighbors of the family. >> i feel bad for his mom. i can't imagine what she's going through right now. >> reporter: two men gunned down and 14-year-old ian willsey when he was with a friend in mayfair. the family didn't return home where neighbors waited to offer their support and left letters outside the family's door tonight. >> when i hear that, i was really sad for him, for his mom. >> reporter: police say awe gunman shot the freshman on brown and devereaux as he tried to get away. sources close to the investigation say detectives are looking into the possibility that someone targeted willsey. for what reason, the motive

mitt romney and his wife, ann, and new video shows the meeting taking place right there. it's the second time they've met in just weeks. romney reportedly being considered for secretary of state, and he is among several other contenders. trump's newly appointed chief of staff reince priebus was also at that dinner. nbc news has also confirmed former goldman sachs anchor steve is being offered the job of secretary of the treasury. president-elect is also expected to name billionaire investor will wilbur ross as head of the commerce department. earlier today elaine chow was named transportation secretary. chow was labor secretary under president george w. bush and the first asian-american woman to serve in a president's cabinet. she is married to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell of kentucky. new details tonight on the effort to get a presidential recount in pennsylvania. former green party candidate jill stein will now get a court hearing on her lawsuit. it will be monday in harrisburg. stein's attorneys will face off with attorneys for the pennsylvania republican party. they call the lawsuit completely

without merit since president-elect trump won the state by nearly 70,000 votes. the wildfires burning in tennessee have turned deadly. at least three people have died while thousands have been evacuated. the resort town of gatlinburg is the hardest hit. just take a look at this devastation. hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire that suddenly raged out of control overnight. flames came dangerously close to a hilton hotel temporarily trapping terrified guests. more than 14,000 people have been evacuated from gatlinburg. >> we could feel the heat coming off. it was nothing but red. >> reporter: firefighters are still unable to get to many of those burned out areas and are concerned the death toll could rise. brazil's president has declared three days of national mourning after a plane carrying the professional brazilian

soccer team crashed in the mountains of columbia. only six of the 77 people on board survived. the pilot reported an electrical problem and circled before crashing just miles away from the airport overnight, but a surviving flight attendant told rescuers the plane ran out of fuel. >> back here at home a plea deal tonight for the truck driver charged in the crash that injured comedian tracy morgan and it means he could have avoid jail time. kevin roper pleaded guilty today to charges of vehicular homicide and aggravated assault. he was driving a wall mart truck on the new jersey turnpike two and a half years ago when he crashed into a limo van carrying morgan, morgan's friend was killed, and morgan and three others were injured. under the plea deal, roper can avoid prison if he performs community service and meets other conditions over the next three years. tonight a new push for answers in a deadly hit-and-run that claimed the life of an 8-year-old philadelphia girl. a $25,000 reward has now been offered for information leading

to an arrest. jiana powell died when she was hit in overbrook a week and a half ago. the driver sped off. last night powell's parents held her funeral, and today her mother made an emotional plea to the driver to turn him or herself in. >> i had to -- that's the hardest thing in my life. i don't get a prom. i don't get a graduation. no marriage. no grandkids. no nothing. make it better on everybody. >> investigators have released a picture of the car that hit her. it is a silver nissan maxima or ultima. it should have damage to a headlight or front grill. people were led away after a protest to raise the minimum wage. and people in all were issued citations after refusing to leave the road in center city. they're part of the group of service industry workers, fast food employees, and uber drivers rallying for $15 minimum wage.

million. the crook had no clue what he was stealing until he opened it up. >> tonight we are hearing from some of the victims of the attack at ohio state university. >> one of the survivors described the moment the shooter slammed into him. >> when the car hit and hit me, i didn't really know what to think. i thought, well, maybe this is a traffic accident, but then several people started shouting immediately, and i couldn't hear what they said, but it was panicked shouting. >> that professor, among 1 1 people injured yesterday, when authorities say ohio state student abdul artan drove into a crowd. he then got out and stabbed students with a butcher knife before police shot and killed him. the fbi is now pouring over his laptop and other digital devices to try to come up with a motive. officials tell nbc news there is is a for no direct connection between him and isis, though the terror group has claimed he was working with them.

posts apparently left on his facebook page expressed anger over attacks on muslims. tonight students and teachers came together for a buckeye strong event to show support for the victims. the university's president urged the community to move forward in a spirit of unity. and what happened at ohio state is an example of why local officers were training tonight. it's an nbc 10 exclusive. >> nbc 10's keith jones strapped cameras to camden county police officers as they trained to fight an active shooter in the school. they say this is the closest you'll get to the nightmare of the real thing. >> let me show you what's happening here right now. take a look behind me. this is the suspect shooting like this. a blank rifle round. across the way those are the officers wearing masks like i have on my head, and also wearing go pros. >> drop, drop, drop. >> down the school hallway. >> reporter: police search for a shooter. >> there is a very high likelihood that you could be shot or killed.

>> reporter: rounding corners, looking death in the eye. >> that comes with the job. >> reporter: the detective sees the active shooter training. the guns shoot blanks, which still hurt. they run through scenarios, time being precious. >> our officers are the first ones to respond and they're being taught to enter that building and eliminate that threat. >> reporter: in other words, have the shooter target them rather than civilians. they, in turn, have more time to run. >> we have to stop the threat to reduce the number of lives lost. >> reporter: rafael thornton says even if that means sacrificing their lives. >> we're going to fight through. that's what we're trained to do. >> reporter: dozens of camden county police officers took part. they're shifting how police are trained to make sure they -- especially with use of deadly force. time is of the essence. police say if you are in this situation, run, hide, or fight.

>> maybe you and a couple of your co-workers, friends, you attack the gunman and somebody can make it out of there alive. >> reporter: in camden county, keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> we hope the training is something they never have to put into practice. as for the weather, another wet one tomorrow. >> yeah, it is. make sure you have the umbrella through the day tomorrow. in the morning we're going to have dense fog around. that's one thing you'll want to watch out for in the morning. take your time. give yourself a little extra time as you leave dense fog already forming through part of the area. the little visibility that's going to be around as we go throughout the morning. commute is going to start overnight tonight, and for the morning rush thick fog, scattered showers moving in, and even later in the day we expect some thunderstorms so we do have the risk of storms reported tomorrow. then we go into thursday. that's when we'll finally dry. not tomorrow, but thursday it will be a dryer day. it will be cooler, and it will

be windy. here's a look at future fog as we go through the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning. this is what the visibility is expected to be. right around zero miles for most of the area. that is thick fog, so, again, be careful as you are driving tomorrow morning. we do expect that fog. now, the good news is for now the rain has left the area, but we have more that's going to move in through part of the day tomorrow. currently it's in parts of tennessee moving into kentucky and that rain is heading in our direction. future weather showing that fog overnight by 11:00 a.m. the showers are here. some of them could be locally heavy. i think we'll see some around the morning commute, but heavier right around lunchtime with a possibility of thunderstorms. that could be the case even later in the afternoon. not for everybody, but parts of the area could see that. then we're looking at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow night. this particular model showing a line of possibly organized storms. we'll have to watch this closely. then by 1 1:30 moving through the philadelphia area, heading into new jersey overnight, and

in clarion, thursday morning, so by thursday morning you'll see the sunshine, but it will be cooler and windier. right now temperatures are still mild around 60 degrees. tomorrow we'll be topping out through parts of the area near 70 degrees. for tomorrow high temperatures near 60 for redding. 56 for bethlehem. scattered showers starting off the day, though, with patchy dense fog. phoenixville, 63 for a high tomorrow. if you are in byberry, 66 degrees. 66 -- 62 degrees, trenton. if you are along the shore. expect temperatures in the mid to low 60s, and if you are in delaware, you could certainly be in the low 70s tomorrow. warm, rainy day. then we clear out thursday. high of 58 degrees with winds friday, 53. going into the weekend we're going to be quite a bit cooler. 49 saturday. 47 on sunday. we stay cooler to start next week with your ten-day forecast. with more rain as we start next week. >> thanks, sheena. walking the runway and giving back.
