lighting ceremony. the cold and rain weren't enough to dampen anyone's christmas spirit, though. >> we have live team coverage. we begin with sheena. any neighborhoods still seeing snow? >> the snow is really moving out for the poconos. they were the last ones to see the snow and the first ones to see the snow. it's moved out of the area. now we're just left with lighter rainfall. the snow did just recently end and some of our snowfall totals from the poconos, our highest amount in mount pocono at 5 inches of snow. that's that higher elevation snow that tends to accumulate more. if you are around the long pond area, in parts of the poconos, mostly monroe county, 3.5 inches there. straussburg, 3.1 inches. lehigh over an inch of snow. in the philadelphia area we're still dealing with the light rain from philadelphia to trenton. that will be leaving soon. light rain just scattered through south jersey, parts of delaware. there is an end in sight, and we should be dryer for the commute

tomorrow. temperatures, though, still in the 40 lz through most of the area. many of our pennsylvania suburbs in the lehigh valley in the 30s. 37 degrees leesport, and 36 degrees if you are in the lehigh valley. we're still a little above freezing. 35 nazareth. 34 in bathe. 36 in white hall township. you'll see dry conditions. coming up we'll talk about the cold blast for the weekend. >> sheena, see you soon. the snow is good news for people in the poconos. here's the view from am camel back mountain. people are hoping that the cold l weather will help them with the ski season. nbc 10's brandon is live from bartonsville. brandon. >> reporter: jacquelin and jim, the workers are over in this parking lot not too far from where we're standing. you can see the flashing lights. they're plowing that low and cold parking lot. you can see trucks in this restaurant parking lot right where we're standing. this is just the look of what

we're looking at right now. you can see some of the snow on the ground. i would say we probably got about an inch or less in this area. as you go further north right off the 61 is, you may see two to three inches. a lot of people we talk to say this is a chance for them to get out and put in the extra work. >> it's the beginning to what adam brown expects to be a long night. we caught up with brown and his co-worker outside the giant in bartonsville on the first significant snowfall of the season. >> the snow removal. nothing crazy yet, but it's going to be all night. >> snow is good business for you guys. >> oh, yes. everything is good business for us. >> brown works with northeastern site contractors. this was his first stop of the night. >> this whole area. all over to lowe's and kohl's. we got other guys around the areas. >> while he cleared the walkways, drivers made sure the parking lots weren't messy. not too far way pen-dot trucks

salted the roadways. we first saw snowflakes in wingap around 6:00 tonight. it was mixed in with some rain and sleet, but enough to cover cars at a nearby dealership. that mix turned into snow the further north we drove. roughly 15 minutes from wingap, we met linda anad, who was leaving work. anan said it was a short drive home, but she must drive over a big hill, which is why she has studs on her wheels. >> were you expecting snow today? >> yeah, they said, but we were expecting it earlier. >> okay. what's it like to see it out here now? >> stinks. i don't like it. >> reporter: moments ago you heard sheena talking about the storm moving out of the poconos. a few moments ago we had a lot slicker snowflake. now we have these tinier snowflakes. looks a lot more like rain. we haven't heard of any beings from police reported on the interstates or highways. i'm brandon hudson, nbc 10 news.

mourning. >> reporter: a deadly wrong-way crash brought residents in elmer salem county closer to tragedy. state police identified the driver of the car that ran head on into trooper frankie williams car killing him as one of the town's own. >> it's a small world. i'm not even sure. it is a small town. you know, 1,000 people. >> reporter: nino and his father sam aidan run elmer's diner. the talk was on the deadly crash involving one of the regulars, 61-year-old lloyd ruddily. >> once in a while i see him at the lunch. he comes and picks up lunch. >> reporter: according to the facebook page the class of 1973 ruddily was class valedictorian and went on to become a doctor of psychiatry. police say just before 7:00 last night on route 55 trooper williams was responding to a call of an irradic driver in a car mafrping the description of the one ruddily was driving. the car crossed the grassy median from the southbound to

northbound lanes of route 55 and struck trooper williams head on. devastation for his former neighbors. >> this is so tragic. >> the 31-year-old trooper was just beginning a new life in his dream job with new jersey state police since january and married since september. residents turned up at the port north barracks where trooper williams worked. some in tears. all to offer their condolences and support. >> i just, you know, god bless and, you know, i hope they can carry on. you know, our prayers are with them. >> reporter: investigators are waiting on toxicology results to determine the cause of the crash, and that could take weeks. in elmer, salem county, denise nicano, nbc 10 news. we have breaking news from overseas right now. at least 25 people dead after an earthquake in indonesia. the u.s. geological survey says it was a 6.4 magnitude quake, and local officials say hundreds of people are injured and dozens of buildings collapsed. we'll bring you more information just as soon as we get it on our

nbc 10 app. now to the presidential transition. tonight president-elect donald trump officially announced his nominee for secretary of defense. mr. trump introduced general james maddis known as mad dog. he was there as part of the president-elect's thank you tour for his supporters. donald trump praised him and talked about their plans for the future. >> such an important position. we will rebuild our military and alliances, destroy terrorists, face our enemies head on, and make america safe again. >> earlier today the president-elect sparked controversy over air force one. he threatened to cancel a multibillion dollar contract for two new presidential planes from boeing. mr. trump first announced the news on twitter, sending boeing's stock sliding before it bounced back. in the meantime, a spokesperson

for donald trump says the president-elect sold all of his stocks in june. that sell-off could help alleviate concerns about any conflicts of interest involving gun -- the spokesperson did not offer any proof of the president-elect's stock sale. the man who allegedly gunned down a former nfl running man is facing charges tonight. ronald gasser was arrested in new orleans monday. he is accused of shooting joe mcknight during an apparent road rage incident. police say gasser fired three shots, each hitting mcknight, who was unarmed. sheriff newell norman was highly criticized for not charging gasser sooner. >> those who have criticized the men and women of this organization in the strategy, decisions that we made relative to that. tough. >> the sheriff also read off some racist hate mail messages that elected officials have received for backing his

decision to give the investigation more time. they included slurs and profanity. gasser is being held on half a million dollars bond. new tonight, no more victims. nbc news has learned that crews have finished searching the site of last friday's deadly warehouse fire in oakland, and the death toll remains at 36. meantime, federal investigators are trying to determine whether a refrigerator or other appliance may have caused the fire at the warehouse known as the ghost ship. this comes as nbc news has attained new video showing police officers inside the doomed warehouse less than two months before the fire. this is raising new questions about whether authorities were aware of possible safety issues at the warehouse or knew that people were living there illegally. remember this? you're looking at video from last january's blizzard in northtown. >> the borough was crippled by that snow. the municipal council is moving

forward with a snow emergency routes ordinance. nbc 10 was at the council meeting tonight where members of the community had the opportunity to ask questions about the plan. it will ban parking or driving on certain streets when a snow emergency is declared. we've spoke to one concerned resident. >> the plan that they brought up now is they couldn't drive with no collaborative working with churches, business, and all that to see if the residents could put their cars there to allow us to let the snow emergency routes be cleaned. >> councilmembers say they'll visit concerned residents tomorrow to better understand their worries. well, the rain finally moving out and coming up, i'll show you what the morning commute will look like. plus, we have really cold temperatures heading our way just in time for your weekend. a real life grinch. you've heard of people stealing packages, but we're about to show you a crime that you may have never seen before.

colorado street yesterday morning. you can see the woman unwrap the lights and then just walk away. the homeowner tells us he posted the video to a neighborhood facebook group in hopes of identifying her. >> well, some temple students feel like someone stole their football coach. >> they do. matt rule is resigning to take a job at baylor. it means temple will play in the military bowl without him. all right. john clark is here now with more details. john. >> just like the last two football coaches at temple, if they have success, other teams and other schools come calling. matt rule is leaving the owls for baylor in waco, texas. he also reportedly turned down oregon. temple's athletic director took the call from matt. >> i thanked him for all he did for this program, and i also said they're getting a great football coach, and you have left it in a better place, and i appreciate that. >> reporter: temple athletic director patrick craft will begin the search immediately for a new coach. the big recruiting period starts in january.

tight ends coach ted foley will lead the owls in the military bowl december 27th. >> temple, american athletic conference football champions. >> reporter: just three days af temple won their first conference title in 49 years, matt rule called the team meeting and told his players he was leaving. >> surprised. kind of expected it a little bit. i understand how the business works. yeah, definitely sad. >> he really gave me the foundation to be a good player and for the whole team to be successful. >> reporter: under matt's rule the owls reached new heights. two straight bowl appearances and two straight ten win seasons for the first time in school history. temple students will miss him. >> it's just sad. i don't know. he is, like, one of us. we love matt rule. >> i'm actually -- i'm sad. i actually wish he stayed. i'm betrayed.

>> it was just a year ago this week that matt signed an extension until 2021, but coaches can come and go as they please in college sports, but the student athlete cannot. it's wrong. i'm john clark at csn. >> all right, j.c. back to our weather now, and sort of gray, dreary skies behind us with the rain. >> it's been wet all day. rain or snow, depending where you live. >> that's very true. if you were in the poconos, you saw a nice blanket of snow. mount pocono saw five inches of fresh snowfall just this afternoon and evening. the snow has now moved out. most of it is in parts of upstate new york and a lot of the rain that we have around locally has gotten a lot lighter. here's a close-up view of the poconos. maybe just flurries left over, but that's really about it. lehigh valley had a bit of a wintery mix and a few light snowshowers earlier too. we had reports of sleet across parts of the lehigh valley as well, but now we're just seeing rain, very light rain, from philadelphia to trenton. that's going to be dying down

overnight tonight. south jersey and delaware seeing some light scattered showers. the green rain shows us the lightest of it, and if it were yellow or orange, it would be heavier. that's moved off shore. that is the good news. that's all clearing out. temperature-wise, we're still above freezing. not mount pocono, though. still sitting at 31. allentown, 36. 43 in philadelphia. 42 mount holly. 42 in wilmington. we'll stay above freezing through the night tonight. we will be drying. the rain is leaving. your morning rush tomorrow will be dry. you'll notice the clouds around, but at least the rain is going to be out of here. then as we go into the end of the week, we have that arctic blast of air we've been telling you about for the past several days. it's going to be very cold and very windy starting this friday, and your weekend is even going to be cold. by that i mean high temperatures in the 30s. you will want the heavy winter coats from friday through sunday. for tonight, though, the rain. there you see it clearing on our planner here. by tomorrow morning, cloudy but
