savannah and mike and charles. another big story we're dealing with is the weather. you should handle that. >> i'm telling you, we are talking about -- let's talk about the cold first. right now a lot of folks dealing with this first big blast of cold air. this arctic blast anywhere from 10 to to degre20 degrees below . in atlanta it feels like 35 degrees. as we move on into tomorrow morning, windchills, single digits to the teens. make their way into saturday evening and on into sunday. again, those windchills brutal. but this is just the beginning. right up around siberia, the temperatures this morning in the minus 20s to minus 50s. over the next couple of days, that's going to come across the arctic ocean due to a high pressure system and low pressure over canada funneling that cold, wru t brew dal autal air in. by wednesday, 38. 29 in new york city. the good news is it is not going to hang around a long time but it is going to feel awfully

rough. for our friends around the great lakes, there is a lot of lake-effect snow. these localized bands dumping tons of snow. right now in upstate new york, krist kristen dahlgren is in pulaski, new york. >> reporter: good morning, al. overnight we saw a few more inches here, some places now have more than a foot, and it is bitterly cold causing a lot of problems for a lot of people. from coast to coast, a wintry mess. icy cold temperatures and lots of snow making driving dangerous. in erie county, pennsylvania, more than a dozen cars piling up along interstate 90. at least ten people were taken to the hospital. while in michigan, a massive crash turning deadly. >> 30 vehicles in a complete whiteout. >> reporter: three killed when almost 40 cars slammed into each other in white-out conditions. >> i was lucky enough, i could see the taillights in front of

the semi. you just couldn't see. it was just kicking up that bad. >> reporter: lake-effect snow blanketing parts of upstate new york with more than a foot. even midland, texas is digging out. the arctic air sending temperatures plummeting. out west, the next system coming ashore. bringing snow and ice to places like seattle and portland. only the heartiest heading out. >> i prefer to run outside so i still will just bear it and do it. >> reporter: even in chicago where they are used to the chill -- >> there is a little bit of a shock because it has been pretty mild this winter. >> reporter: they are buntare l bundling up and getting ready for the next blast to come. >> reporter: it may get worse out here and some 200 million people going to be affected over the next few days. >> thank you very much. now to the tributes that are pouring in for a true american

icon and hero -- john glenn who died at the age of 95. as an astronaut, he made history and inspired the nation. as a u.s. senator, he was one of the most respected people on capitol hill. and his life is being celebrated this morning. nbc's tom costello is at the national air and space museum. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. this is friendship 7. this crude spacecraft that in 1962 john glenn piloted around the earth. it took tremendous courage. this was the soviet union space race. they were winning. and the united states was determined to catch up. so this unassuming fighter pilot from ohio came back an american hero. across the country this morning, tributes to an american original. from president obama, with john's passing, our nation has lost an icon and michelle and i have lost a friend. from president-elect trump -- he was a hero and inspired generations of future explorers.

sweetheart, aen innniannie. he flew combat missions in world wore 2 and korea. became one of the elite original "mercury 7" astronauts. >> i think there is a power greater than i many a that will certainly see that i'm taken care of if i do my part of the bargain. >> reporter: a close friend of the kennedys, he was with bobby kennedy when he was gunned down in california. it was glenn who had to break the in u.s. to the kennedy children. in 1974 he was elected to the first of four terms in the u.s. senate. then, in 1998, he suited up again for a space shuttle mission. at the age of 77, the oldest astronaut to fly. >> i want to try to contribute more to learning about the whys of aging. hopefully we can lessen the frailties of old age that plague so many people. >> john glenn was, no question about it, on a par with any

other explorer we've ever had in our history. lewis and clark. >> reporter: his lifetime of achievement and service honored with both the congressional gold medal and the presidential medal of freedom and thursday -- tributes. >> he always looked out for the little guy and that was in his personal life and in his professional life as a senator, and it's what i particularly admire about him. >> reporter: an american through and through, and a life dedicated to family and country. john glenn is survived by his wife, aen nniannie, two childre grandchildren. i met and interviewed him several times over the years. he was always incredibly kind and patient, especially for such an american icon. and we share the same barb eer here in washington, matt. his photo hanged very proudly in that barber shop. >> i would imagine. tom brokaw covered john glenn's historic return to space, interviewed him many times over the years. knew him well. tom, good morning to you. >> morning. >> i think there is a whole

group of people in this country beneath a certain age who cannot even understand the guts, the courage it took to get in that cap actusule in 1962 and get on of that rocket. >> i remember i was a senior in college. i looked for any excuse to skip class. that day i remember when he lifted off. it was a defining moment in american life. if norman rockwell were to draw the quintessential american hero, it would be john glenn. throughout his life, it was never about him. it was so modest. i was just with him two years ago when we rededicated the john glenn college of public affairs at ohio state. what people didn't know -- he told me when i got there -- he had macular degeneration so he was losing his eyesight. it was is very hard for him. he had been 20-20 until his 80s with his eyesight. >> everybody remembering the movie "the right stuff," the narrowing down that field for "mercury 7." he didn't really love the movie

or the way he we depicted in it. he says the process was dramatic enough without hollywood intervening. >> he really liked tom wolfe who was a friend of mine. we were at dinner about three years before the book. i said what are you working on? he said i'm working on the original astronaut. i said, what else could be written? that is the defining book about it. >> back when he went back into space at the age of 77. we were all down there covering that. try to capture the emotion of that launch. >> well, it's just very hard to describe. among other things, i called ted williams who had been his wing man in korea and i said, would you come up and be our guest? he was in a wheelchair at that time. ted talk only at 1 decibel which is right off the top. "yeah, i'll be there." he couldn't wait to be there. ted didn't have a lot of heroes. john glenn was his hero. he says that was the best fighter pilot i have ever seen. >> he succeeded at just about

everything he did in life but he did not succeed at winning the presidenc presidency. >> i think he didn't succeed as president because he would not play the larger role. he was always john glenn, steady as she goes, pilot in the cockpit, not going to do anything dramatic. he came from central ohio. it was just -- it was not a natural instinct for him to go out there and blow himself up. if i said today to somebody john glenn wouldn't do bombasts on twitter, he wouldn't have a multi-million dollar foundation. he was very comfortable being the small town boy and we have to mention annie. they had side by side cribs and they were married for 74 years. >> we're going to actually hear part of an interview we did with john and aen in innie later in show. tamron? >> matt, thank you. president-elect donald trump has a busy day ahead after taking his thank you tour to iowa last night. we're also hearing from hillary clinton who returned to capitol hill for the first time since

the election. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at trump tower with more on what they had to say there. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, tamron, good morning. it is how millions of americans got to know donald trump, of course, as the star and host of "celebrity apprentice." this morning, we've learned that even after he enters it the white house, he will maintain his executive producer credit for the show. it comes after trump defended the wealth of some of his cabinet picks suggesting that they all made a fortune but now they're negotiating with you, even comparing them to a line-up of great baseball players. >> thank you to the great, great people of iowa. >> reporter: president-elect trump's latest victory lap reveling in iowa and again calling out china as he formally introduced iowa governor terry br branstad at his new ambassador to china. >> they haven't played by the rules and i know it is time they are going to start. they are going to start.

>> reporter: even as trump prepares to become president, the former reality tv star will keep another title -- executive producer of nbc's "celebrity apprentice." a trump spokeswoman telling nbc news mr. trump has a big stake in the show and conceived of it with mark burnett. nbc airs "celebrity apprentice" this season featuring arnold schwarzenegger, not trump. but it is produced by mgm. still unclear what trump will be paid. meanwhile, trump's pick for labor secretary andy puzder, ceo of hardy's and charles jr. while puzder approves of these racy ads, he opposes broader overtime pay and minimum wage increases. >> when you raise the cost of hiring low-skilled workers, you really price them out of their jobs. >> you couldn't find someone more anti-labor for labor secretary and that's a very bad sign for workers of america. >> reporter: chuck jones who challenged trump for exage lag e

exaggerating the number of jobs saved at carrier remains unfazed. >> i've had all kinds of threats and stuff over the years so i guess i got a little more thick skin. i give the guy a little bit of credit -- he's got a little bit of spunk to him. >> reporter: as for trump's former rye rivarival, hillary c she returned to washington, even poking fun at herself. >> this is not exactly the speech at the capitol i hoped to be giving after election. but after a few weeks of taking selfies in the woods, i thought it would be a good idea to come out. >> reporter: clinton also offering a warning about what she called the epidemic of fake news spread on social media. just days after that scare at a d.c. pizza restaurant prompted by a conspiracy theory. >> it is now clear that so-called fake news can have real world consequences. this isn't about politics or partisanship.

lives are at risk. >> reporter: as for that "celebrity apprentice" news, nbc entertainment has declined to comment. also today back here at trump tower, donald trump has more meetings scheduled, including one with a democratic west virginia senator, joe manchin, another possible cabinet pick, before trump heads out to iowa and another stop on the thank you tour in grand rapids, michigan tonight. >> peter alexander, thank you. want to turn now to that high-profile trial of the south carolina man accused of killing nine people at a historic african-american church. on thursday, jurors were shown chilling video of dylann roof at the scene on the day of the shooting. nbc's gabe gutierrez has that story. >> reporter: this morning, day three of testimony in dylann roof's federal trial after jurors watched this never-before seen security video that shows the moments roof entered and ekts ite e ited a south carolina church

last year allegedly chilling parishioners following a bible study class. the video captures roof entering the mother emanuel ame church at 8:17 p.m. and leaving less than an hour later holding the weapon prosecutors say was used in the killings. he then got into a car and drove away. the same car roof was driving when police arrested him during a traffic stop the next day. more than 20 surveillance videos, including clips of the victims arriving at the church, as well as graphic photos of the crime scene were part of the exhibits shown to the jury. jurors also saw the snapchat video taken from inside the church before the shooting that prosecutors say places roof inside the building. all evidence federal prosecutors are using to build their case against the self-avowed white supremacist. the 22-year-old roof charged with 33 counts, including hate crimes, is facing the death penalty. if he's convicted in and executed, it would be the first such penalty in a federal trial involving hate crimes. for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc

georgia. jody smith was a public safety officer at georgia southwestern state university. he was childhood friends and went to the police academy with officer nicholas smar who was also shot and killed in that incident. their shootings sparked a massive manhunt for the gunman. officials say that gunman apparently took his own life when authorities arrived at a home where he was hiding. the life and accomplishments of john glenn are be celebrating this morning. glenn died thursday at the age of 95. he became an american hero in 1962 when he became the first american to orbit the earth. he would go on to serve 24 years on capitol hill as a u.s. senator. another remarkable moment in glenn's life came in 1998 when he became the oldest man to go into space. i sat down with him and his wife, annie, shortly before that mission. >> let me just start with as simple a question as i probably have ever asked anybody -- why? >> well, i've never felt that

trying to create an environment where you could discover what was so formidable about what jackie had to navigate at the time and the grace with which she navigated it. >> it is interesting. i've seen the movie twice now. did not realize until i saw the notes last night that the journalist didn't have a name. >> well, it was because pablo -- essentially there was an interview that she did for "life" magazine. theodore white was the name of the journalist, i believe. pablo wanted to take a more antagonistic point of view so jackie could earn the respect of the audience through the course of the interview and it wasn't just a puff piece. i was trying to explain to thhi because he's from chel lile, as american who grew up with the iconography as jackie kennedy, i can't go in there as a journalist and be that confrontational a week after her husband's been assassinated. he said, no, but you must for the story. we have to see jackie become the

holidays? >> ideally this is a 15 to 18-year commitment. really think carefully before you bring a dog home. once you do, prepare your house just like you would for a baby. make sure that you puppy proof or dog proof your home. anything that's potentially toxic like cleaners or plants that could cause an intestinal upset. during the holidays we have lots of bowls of candy out. put those away. decorations that are potentially dangerous because they are enticing to play with but dangerous if they ingest. other thing is, probably one of my favorite things, make sure you get your dog proappropriate food toys. charlie is going to show us now. this is a behavior that's obviously important for a service dog but is also really good for companion dogs. if they learn to lay down in a spot wi spot, it means they will be out of trouble and resting. it can be really busy and crazy for them.
