through saturday morning. so keep this in mind if you're heading out early saturday. we're expecting accumulating snow for part of the area, then it will switch over to a brief, icy mix. but either way, during this time slippery roads. tonight through the overnight hours, we have one small weather system moving through, we could see a coating in south jersey or delaware, you could see an inch once you get up in the morning, but nothing's going to be falling material. then on saturday, what you see here on the pink, that's a brief icy mix. and then snow. the icy mix is something we'll be watching closely, however it

does look fiairly brief. we'll talk more about the cold straight ahead. and whether it the snow or the dangerous cold, you can get the weather forecast any time by downloading the nbc10 app. take a look at these flames shooting from the street. they are the results of an underground fire that continues to cause traffic problems this afternoon. calls began coming in this morning about a strange smell in the area. >> when you picture how close that fire is to the cars and the homes, what is the latest out there? >> reporter: the past couple of minutes, we had about 10 pgw workers surround the manhole at 49th and windsor. a couple of firefighters were trying to clear smoke when that fire ignited. this is video of the fire, and you can see flames shooting from

a manhole, pgw was called earlier in the day to support a natural gas owner. a couple of hours before the fire, he saw black smoke coming from a manhole on florence. he described the smoke as overwhelming and like that of burning wires. at that time, pgw went door to door checking for potential gas leaks. >> the gas company just came and knocked on our door and went down to our basement, and we walked around the house, making sure we weren't cooking anything, worried about fire. >> reporter: pgw was out here trying to determine the cause of the fire. pgw determined there was no natural gas leaks so they're looking into the possibility that the cause is septa's underground equipment that caught fire. two septa workers were taken to

the hospital, one was treated and released and the other was taken to the burn center with burns on his hands and face and he's in stable condition. breaking right now, news of an interest rate hike has made for a tough day on wall street. comes just a day after record highs. the closing bell just rang, the dow jones, the nasdaq and the s&p 500 all closed down today. the rate's been increased by a quarter of a point today. comedian bill cosby returned to a north town montgomery county court today. his lawyers want to stop cosby's mother accu accusers from testi against him. >> one big question the judge

has to decide is will witnesses, women who said that cosby assaulted them. prosecutors say that cosby is a serious offender who strikes when he can control the situation and not get caught. and this is a lifetime of sexual assaults on women. one accuser's account dates back 40 years. she says she only came forward after hear about other women who claim to be victims and cosby's victim says that is a major problem. they say they have no way to defend cosby from the allegations because many of the stories are vague. none of these women came forward until claims were made by andrea constand in 2005, and that's when a plan was hatched to bring down an american icon. cosby has pleaded not guilty.

near his body. witnesses saw him running from the area. in chester county, a would-be bank robber left behind obvious clues that helped police identify him. he checked out after a drug rehab and took a cab to a bank and then he demanded money in a note scribbled on discharge papers. police arrested goodwin yesterday. a fire tore through a gloucester township house. it took about an hour for firefighters to put it out. no one was hurt, there was a for sale sign posted outside the home and no word yet on how the fire started. some travellers will now

roads for the short period of time for the weekend. we're still in the 30s for most of the rest of the area, but we are above freezing at the moment. the focus right now is at the jersey shore. this is an area most likely to see snow tonight. but temperatures are way above freezing, stone harbor, 42 in avalon. summer's point and in hole gate. so right now, the temperatures are above freezing, keep an eye on that. nothing on the radar close by, and really not much back to the west either, we're seeing a few snowflakes in ohio, the computer models of showing, something is likely to develop as we go through the evening. so the temperatures going down through the freezing mark, and here comes this small area of snow. the computer models have been pretty consistent with this,

from model to model and from time to time so we feel fairly confident that there's going to be some. so this is the middle of the night, not going to last long, maybe a little coating and then it's gone. so north of philly we don't see anything, south of philly we see a few flakes for a couple of hours. the main issue is that by 6:30 in the morning, it's going to feel like single digits in much of the area and then get colder throughout the day. however cold you feel in the morning, it will be colder when you go home from work later in the day. two in pottstown. there's 6:30, low single digits everywhere. and now we're talking about close to zero. we saw a zero there in the middle of the night. allentown, 0 by 7:30 friday morning, by friday afternoon, things are getting a little bit more tolerable.

but that's when the snow starts approaching. so saturday, early morning, you're going to have to sleep late enough, you might miss this, snow from philadelphia suburbs and lehigh. snow to a brief icy mix into rain, later in the morning, saturday afternoon it's just raining and it's mild, sunday morning, it's raining and it's mild, so again, so the majority of the weekend, you're not going to be getting this snow, here it comes, middle of the night, coming into philadelphia, parts of south jersey, and the darker blues indicating the heavier snows and that's what we're seeing here. that is dark, dark blue, saturday 6:00 a.m., it could be snowing hard through bucks county northward, and raining hard south philadelphia with a little bit of an icy mix in between. very tricky forecast here, snow to brief icy mix to rain within

20 miles. now, as we go through the rest of the morning, we're changing over, warmer air is coming in, there's your icy mix, later in the morning in the lehigh valley, so it's not even going to stay snow there. by 10:30, it's rain everywhere. so how much snow? the best chance of 4 inches or more in the poconos, a medium chance of 4 inches in the lehigh valley, and there is a chance, but a relatively low chance at this point in philadelphia. in philadelphia, police spread some holiday cheer. more than 125 children were treated to dancing and prizes.

coming hours. >> an arctic blast is heading our way. we will be feeling the freezing impacts very soon. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is keeping an eye on the timeline. >> we issued the first alert on monday for the frigid air that's going to be coming over our area for the next couple of days, that arctic air we told you about for more than a week, and it is coming in, there's nothing to stop it. there's a question about the details, just how cold, just how long it will last. it's 41 in philadelphia now, 45 in allentown, 40 in wilmington. it feels like 18 in pittsburgh.

that area is headed toward us for tonight. and this way below zero air is headed in our direction generally for tomorrow night. we don't get it as bad as those areas to the west. but we get at least some of it. here's the way it's going to feel, tomorrow morning, feeling like about 5, feeling close to zero or a little below late tomorrow evening. by friday morning, single digits, by friday afternoon, we're kind of out of that, then we have a different issue, snow. the clouds have moved in right now, a couple of little flakes in ohio, and there could be something that moves across parts of delaware and extreme south jersey, this is the middle of the night, 11:00, and midnight, there's dover, and you can see it going toward atlantic city, not from philly northward, there's a very, very small quick moving system, maybe a coating

suburbs but for philadelphia. for friday night and saturday morning. most of the weekend is going to be way too warm for any kind of snow and for any snow that falls to melt. brief icy mix and a chance for snow. and traveling to the west or to the north. snow philly, pa suburbs, lehigh. we're starting to see a changeover already from south to in order. by sunday morning it's raining everywhere. and then it turns windy and colder. right now we have temperatures near the 40-degree mark, which is going to be balmy by this time tomorrow. it's 40 degrees in marshallton and newark, 41 in glasgow, 40 in wilmington, 48 in clay mont, but temperatures are above freezing, we do have some snow that may be falling across parts of the area

this season. temperatures well above freezing, and any snow that falls may very well melt as it does. because it's not going to last very long, and there's not going to be that much of it. we're seeing a few echos in ohio, a couple of blimps in virginia, but we're expecting at least some light snow developing. that's right around midnight, not in northern parts of the area. and rapidly coming across, temperatures generally staying above the freezing mark, so it's gone by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow, but then it's getting cold, and by tomorrow morning, it's feeling like single digits in much of the area, and then it's going to feel even colder as the day goes on. however cold you are in the morning, it will be even colder at the end of the day. and then tomorrow night, we're talking about getting down close to zero, for the feels like temperatures and even on the warm spots of the single digits. there's friday 8:00 a.m., still
