ov overnight. you can see the snow is falling. let's talk about the dangerous cold. pamela is live this morning. let's first begin with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. he is tracking this arctic air. >> yeah. the temperatures themselves don't even tell the whole story. this is still 25 degrees below average just temperature wise. but on top of that look at the winds gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour across the area. so it feels like it is 8 in philadelphia and wilmington, 4 in coatsville and 2 in allentown and 8 in trenton. those numbers are not going up

during the day. why? because look at the air in pittsburgh. even colder than ours. chicago feels like 17 below. look at the arrows. that air is headed this way. it won't be quite as fierce as the time it gets here. we have more and more arctic air feeding in. now, after the arctic air is trying to leave and moisture comes in you add up to some snow at least for a period of time. we have a first alert for lehigh valley and even philadelphia itself from 11:00 p.m. friday into saturday morning depending on what part of the area we are in. accumulating snow and slippery roads. again, some areas it would be a very limited time. we have clouds around right now but no significant snow. this is the system that the likely to effect us friday night

expressway. the ramp to the parkway is still closed because of its crash. it's unclear if it's really related. you can see as the truck crashed into the guardrail and landed on its side. one man is in the hospital after this car crash and fire on roosevelt boulevard. the outer lanes were shut down while crews cleared the scene and towed away the vehicle. we are learning more about a brazen burglar who walked out of a courthouse with a police jacket, hat and badge all in his bag. philadelphia police say this man in the tan yankees hat, mar roo vest picked up an officer's jacket and bad and hat and walked out. if you see this man or know who

he is philadelphia police would like you to give them a call. in a sex assault case an attorney for many of cosby's accusers became the focal point during the pretrial hearing. the defense is trying to block 13 accusers from taking the stand at cosby's sex assault trial next year. >> some of the stories the women have shared. >> if you don't have the facts then you attack either the victim or other lawyers or both. >> the arguments are now finished. no word yet on when the judge will make a decision ton accuser's testimony. we have new details this morning on a verdict that awarded million of dollars to penn state coach mike mcquery.

his lawyers are asking for another $1.7 million for litigation and lawyer bills. penn state says it will review the request. he testified against sandusky. after that the university placed him on administrative leave and terminated him the following year. happening now in harrisburg a court hearing could have major implications on the power of all school boards across the state. they are listening to an appeal. the district is trying to overturn a reduction of a 4.4% tax increase. that reordered after a judge ruled they were misleading by claiming a budget deficit so it could get a waiver of tax increase limits. also happening today

montgomery county officials that would increase real estate taxes. it would fund montgomery county community college. if it is approved today the average homeowner would pay an extra $66 per year. it is expected to raise about $22 million across the county. 7 minutes past 11:00 on this thursday. let's get a quick check of traffic. what are you seeing out there? >> we are watching a little bit of a delay. cameras right around 24th street showing a delay right now. this traffic is headed westbound. the expressway is dealing with construction around montgomery drive. they have the right lane closed. they are seeing delays there because of that. westbound showing sthat as well. there is construction with the right lane blocked. at the point we are starting to see back ups aennd delays it is

rested its case in a church shooting. we report from washington. >> reporter: we are expecting a verdict at some point this afternoon. the jury will begin deliberations some time around noon. they will have to decide if dylann roof deserves the death penalty. nine people welcomed him into their prayer service last june. his confession is part of the reason we are expecting things to happen fairly quickly today. there are 33 to go through. it has been an emotional trial so far to say the least, especially tough for victim's families. prosecutors released chilling 911 calls. shepherd said he told her, i will let you live so you can tell the story.

hill was too much for this bus. nobody here was hufrmt portland doesn't get too much snow but they have had quite a bit of it so far this season. many schools are closed today because of weather. back in our area no measurable snow on the ground at the moment. it could change for the weekend. we are dealing with this dangerous cold weather outside. pamela is outside where i'm sure commuters have been bundled up out, pam. >> reporter: rosemary, i wish i could say it is getting a little bit better now that the morning is going on but it feels even worse out here especially with these wind gusts. >> i just got out here. my eyes are watering. >> reporter: patricia is right. it is the type of cold that nearly knocks you down when it hits. >> it is brutal.

and we are not going to see any improvement in the way it feels for another 24 hours. we also have some snow, wintery weather in the forecast in pennsylvania county, especially lehigh valley and also philadelphia getting a brief period of some snow. this first alert from 11:00 p.m. friday to saturday morning depending on where in pennsylvania you have with some accumulating snow, brief icy mix and slippery conditions. here is the basic time line. saturday morning is the issue. snow to rain. by saturday afternoon it's not that bad at all. sunday morning it's really mild and sunday afternoon it is turning windy and colder. it is just a small part of the weekend that will be an issue

here. look at these temperatures. 24 degrees and a 24 miles per hour sustained wind. these are the current gusts, 43 miles per hour in allentown. we have been telling you this is coming for ten days. we had it in our ten day forecast, a long time ago, even predicting a high of 30 for today. it should not be a surprise. single digit temperatures today and into tonight. this is tomorrow morning. it has not changed very much. by this time tomorrow it is at least going to be feeling like the teens. tomorrow afternoon feeling like the teens to the low 20s. so look, we are at least going to get some improvements as we head into the weekend. nothing more than a couple of flakes on the radar in our area. we have to go way back into

missouri to find any snow from the system that will be effecting us tomorrow night. the wind direction is going to be very very important here. look at that southerly winds. the atmosphere trying to warm up as this snow is coming in. at 11:30 tomorrow night it is clearly cold enough to in the entire area. how far south is this precipitation going to get and how heavy is it going to be? as we go towards saturday morning the warm air is trying to come up and change over any snow to a mix in philadelphia already. it is still snowing farther to the north. that warm air keeps coming up. so then the lehigh valley changes to an icy mix. 7:30 in the morning, that will be rough. philadelphia is already improving and then getting heavy

rain as we go to the late morning. in the afternoon look at that, fairly quiet and this front comes through. it will be giving us the rain on sunday. let's get a little closer to the area that will be hit the hardest. this is l erehigh valley. 6:00 a.m. it is all snow. whatever that's fallen is snow. we are getting this icy mix and that's partly what i'm concerned about here especially in areas of the l herbhiehigh valley. look what will happen to temperatures this weekend. we are starting off friday into saturday morning in the 20s. by saturday night 48. by sunday morning close to 60 in philadelphia and then we start going down again. just some wild temperature

back today keep that in mind, bundle up, dress for the weather. snow fell overnight in portions of our region. this is our view from north philadelphia. flakes were falling here. the snow made for a very pretty picture at rittenhouse square. temperatures will continue to plummet. gl glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking that weather. >> yeah. there is about as warm as the rest of the day is going to feel. 24 degrees in philadelphia. it is not going go any higher than that. it is 23 in coatsville. we are talking 15 to 20 degrees colder than this time yesterday just with the temperatures. the feels like temperature is

based on sustained winds. 1 in allentown. 5 in coatsville and 8 in wilmington. you're not going to get out of the single digits all day. now, as misttuoisture comes in will add up to some snow. lehigh valley and maybe the philadelphia area as well at least far brief period of time. 11:00 p.m. friday to saturday morning. a limited amount of time and slippery roads. we have a lot of clouds, a couple of flurries around but that's about it coming from the great lakes. that's the system that is going to be effecting us tomorrow night into saturday. as we go into friday night and the midnight hour that's when this first area of snow is going to be coming across we'll talk

we have the latest on this syrian conflict. >> reporter: the revakuation is finally beginning. they said this morning that the first convoy of buses carrying some 5,000 rebel fighters and their families had left the previously rebel-held eastern neighborhood. most will be taken to a rebel held province in syria. it is not clear whether the buses have departed yet. they will be accompanied by allies of the syrian regime. you'll remember there had been a deal on tuesday to get combatants out of the city. it was delayed on wednesday morning and finally scrapped. all of this as it comes to a very mild event. aleppo of street by street fighting. the loss of aleppo the uprising will no longer lay claim to any

major urban areas. also it has come at a massive human cost. they have already compared the battle for some of the worst human atrocities in modern history. so even if the battle in aleppo is coming to an end what happened there is unlikely to be forgotten any time soon. back to you. police in california are looking far man who beat two wi women with a baseball bat. you may find it difficult to watch. police say this could have easily turned into a homicide. you can see a man in a striped shirt hit k a woman with the bat as is on the ground. another woman tries to get her to stop. they have identified all of the other people in the video but they are still looking for the attacker in the case. a man facing several charges

including driving while intoxicated. he was pulled over operating this backhoe. they got a man driving construction equipment drinking a beer. they found whisky and vodka inside the backhoe. this is not the time of year you want to be lost in the mountains. check out this new video. two hikers being rescued. the couple was lost for two days. rescue crews had to use a held continue tore air lift them where they were treated for hypothermia. the force will be with us again. fans have been lined up for tuesday for world one of star wars story. fans have already bought their tickets baa raffle will decide who gets the best seat. it will benefit the starlight childrens foundation. >> what chance do we have? what chance do we have?

if you have still on the hunt for the hottest holiday toy this season you may have a chance to snag one this weekend if you feel like waiting in long lines in the cold weather. you know that's what's involved. if you're still interested toys 'r' us is restocking their shelves. the doors will open at 6:00 in the morning, earlier than most stores normally do. people will most likely line up well in advance. this is video from about two weekends ago, the last time toys 'r' us restocked. the line is around the side of the building.

at 6:00. it is based on the windchill. the police will transport anybody who is sleeping outside who is willing to come in. they transport them to a shelter. we have about 300 more beds and whatcafes that are also open. our bottom line here is we don't want anybody to die from exposure. we want people to come in, be safe, get warm, get fed. that's really the goal of a code blue. >> a big part of helping the homeless is your approach -- new approach coming from your office. you have an open house today. >> yes. they want to help but they don't know what to do. we are rich with charitable

it is 11:00 p.m. to saturday morning in general for accumulating snow, brief icy mixes. it will be a brief time. the focus is on saturday morning. snow to icy mix to rain going from south so north through the area. saturday afternoon is milder. sunday morning rainy and warm. the majority of the weekend is okay for travel. traveling in the car is better than traveling outside today. look at the temperatures currently. nazareth 21. it's not going to warm up much

more than that at all during the day today. we are gusting to 41 miles per hour in coatsville right now. we saw gusts to 43 in allentown a little while ago. the feels like temperatures single digits pretty much all day, all night into tomorrow morning. we got almost 24 hours more of this. we ease up into windchills in the teens as we go through friday afternoon and friday night. then as we go into the weekend things really warm up this is the system we were talking about for friday night and saturday. hour by hour we showed you one computer model earlier. this is another one just in. we have a lot of clouds here. here is the snow. a lot of these models are starting to pull back on the snow advance and not pulling it

down. yesterday many of the models were taken down to delaware in south jersey. some are really restricting that. the later that snow starts piling up the less likely it is for accumulations because the atmosphere is warming up. we'll change snow to an icy mix here and then rain. still snowing in allentown. that's early in the morning. by 8:00 or 9:00 we have rain in philadelphia. it is still perhaps icy in the lehigh valley and poconos and some of the valleys. even there by midday things are really improving. so the chances for significant snowfall for 4 inches or more, our only high in the poconos and just kind of medium in the lehigh valley and low as you head down towards philadelphia. we are not taulking about a lot

of snow accumulation but we are talking about big changes through the weekend. friday bitter cold, highs in the 20s. saturday the snow to ice to rain in the morning and then temperatures 57 at the jersey shore by saturday afternoon and then 60s by sunday morning in parts of the area while it may hold in the 40s in the lehigh valley. a pretty wild weekend going on as far as the temperature swing. there is the 25 tomorrow, up to 43 during the day saturday. saturday night is even warmer. sunday is 58 and then we start draping. we warm up a little wednesday and thursday and cool back down zblus time for christmas eve. it looks like christmas weekend we'll feature temperatures slightly above average. we are not really expecting a white christmas with this kind of weather pattern right now. we'll be right back.
