reflects itself in our politics, as opposed to it being so polarized and so nasty, that in some cases you have voters and elected officials who had more confidence and faith than a foreign adversary than they have in their neighbors. you know? and those go to some bigger issues. you know, how is it that we have some voters or some elected officials who think that michelle obama's healthy eating initiative, school nutrition program is a greater threat to

democracy than you know, our government going after the press if they're issuing a story they don't like. right? i mean that's an issue that i think we have got to wrestle with and we will. people have asked me how you feel after the election and so forth and i say, well, look, this is a clarifying moment. it's a useful reminder that voting counts, politics counts, what the president-elect is going to be doing, is going to be very different than what i was doing and i think people will be able to compare and contrast and make judgments about what worked for the american people. and i hope that building off the
4:05 pm
progress we have made, that what the president-elect is proposing works. what i can say with confidence is that we have done worse. that i can prove. i can show you where we were in 2008, and i can show you where we are now. and you can't argue that we're not better off. we are. and for that, i thank the american people, and more importantly, i thank -- well not more importantly, as importantly, i was going to say, josh ernest. for that i thank the american people, i thank the men and women in uniform who serve. i haven't gotten to the point where i've been overly

sentimental. i got to the point where i did my last christmas note tphoto l and right at the end of the line, the members of the marine corps band come in and i took a picture with them. and it was the last time i was going to take a picture with my marine corps band. i got a little choked up, but i was in front of the marines, so i had to tamp it down. but it was just one small example of all the people who have contributed to our success. i'm responsible for where we have screwed up. the successes are widely shared with all the amazing people who have been part of this administration, okay, thank you, everybody. >> president obama reflective there as he approaches the last

deescalate the partisanship. and the way of convincing the president-elect. if he ee's skeptical, other republicans, he went out of his way to separate the election result from what russia did. i was struck by, he was a bit defense about how forthright, how much of a sense of urgency there was early on in letting the country know, the people know about the russian acts, kind of deflected and put it on the news media, that the news media was more obsessed with the subject of the e-mails than the hacking itself. he's pained about how he's leaving. you can see it, he's pained about the political climate. he's pained about the fact that there's political demonization, there was more rawness i thought at the very end of that press conference. it wasn't whimsical, it was obviously very reflective, but he seemed -- i can't put my finger on it, but just very, very upset about how he's having to exit. >> and the president's goodbye

4:12 pm
during the morning, all you got is rain around the area, but that icing could cause some significant problems. meteorologist sheena parveen has the breakdown of what areas are going to get hardest hit. >> right now we're going to focus on the ice tomorrow morning. it's going to be a dangerous time to be out on the roadways so i suggest you wait until the event is over. this is 6:00 a.m. saturday, snow, far north and west of philadelphia, including the philadelphia area, but there you see the ice, rain through most of the south jersey and delaware. but the ice could be in northern parts of newcastle county, extending into philadelphia, parts of gloucester and camden county, closer to the delaware river, and parts of chester county as well as delaware county. so you see the pink here, that shows us where we could see an icy mix that brings freezing rain that freezes on contact and

was already in the first alert. this is generally from 11:00 p.m. friday into saturday morning. going to last different times through different areas. accumulating snow an icy mix and slippery even icy roads and even ice accumulation on trees and power lines in some locations. so from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., we are snow changing to freezing rain and sleet in part of the area, and that icy mix changing to rain from south to north across the region, that's when things are going to be changing. in the afternoon, it's fine, everybody's above freezing, and at night, we're warming up even more, this is what it looks like as we go through the night tonight. temperatures are rising, and by 6:00 a.m., snow in philadelphia, snow in p.a. suburbs at 29. snow in the lehigh valley, of 28. delaware, getting close at 31. 32 in much of new jersey and

moving into the philadelphia area, parts of northern delaware county and some of our neighborhoods in new jersey right across the river or at least right near the river. then we're going to go through time here, about hour and a half, now we're looking at early in the morning. the pink is spreading to the north as the warmer air moves to the south. the snow still farther to the north, parts of montgomery county, most of bucks county, most of chester county, even berks county, all seeing icy conditions, this makes driving very dangerous. and the problem now is that the ice does look to be lasting longer. in norristown, pottstown, all these areas, west chester, by 8:00 a.m., you could still see ice falling. then before 9:00 a.m., should be mainly snow falling and accumulating and then we'll see
4:35 pm
ice. even upper bucks county and berks county as well. farther to the south near philadelphia, we should already be seeing a change over to rain, but the ice is going to be the biggest problem on the roads in the morning, so wait to leave until after 9:00. drew smith is live in norristown where penn dot is preparing for the freezing weather. >> this is fully stocked, this is as much salt as you'll see all season. they are ready for this. they say this all started on thursday when they started their deicing program. tonight this is going to be a busy place. the timing they say is good because it's going to be happening in the overnight hours, and because it's a weekend, but that doesn't mean it's going to be a quiet weekend
4:36 pm
here. they're mixing that salt with sand and they have been treating since thursday with that anti icing program. the salt trucks will begin to roll out around midnight when the snow begins to fall, and after that if they need the plows for major accumulation, they'll be moving those out as well. we're going to be heading down to another part of this salt yard to watch a demonstration of them loading the heavy equipment they brought in. and we'll turn that around for you later on in the newscast. we're live in norris town, i'm drew smith, nbc10. >> you can get your neighborhood forecasts any time, you just have to download the nbc10 app. we're following breaking news in america manayunk.
