[ laughter ] >> welcome back. so glad you came. i had a chance to see the movie yesterday. hoda hasn't been able to yet and, oh, my gosh. love, love, love it. i had no idea these women existed, and they so deserve to have their story told. tell everybody about it. >> they do. so much of what we have is lost or not told, and so much of it's -- a lot of our history is shameful, some embarrassing but it still makes up who we are and where we can get to, where we need to get to and this story "hidden figures" is about this story, three women. starts out of with a little 8-year-old girl who is in college. in college, literally and blowing the room away. >> back in the '60s? >> you realize she touched. gifted. her gift leads her all the way to the point john glenn says i'm not going unless the smart girl tells me i can.

>> yes. and what i was really moved by was the fact they were not just african-american women, but they were, they were women trying to break into this totally patriarchal group of nasa -- all look like you. white, the crew cut. >> and called something else that also charmed me, which is called computers. long before we had computers, the women who were adding up, the men adding up, they called them computers. >> uh-huh. yeah, and, of course, they were segregated, but somehow, you know, the cream gets to the top, and really that's what we need to be about in "hidden figures." i think it has that level of inspiration that you realize. >> it does. >> that you can get there. the problem is, with us, when we hold people down. that will always be our problem. >> a lot of that. >> you pick your projects carefully. every time you come with a project there's something about it. you learned about this story when you read the script. so what was it about it right away that you said, yeah, i'm in. >> i didn't say yes right away. interesting enough. i thought it was really good.

i thought my part was very schizophrenic and had to bring it up, hey, man, i'm -- he got real quiet. i've offended him because he's also the writer and said, look, i couldn't get the rights to the guy i wanted. it's based on three different people. i said, there you have it. maybe even this guy out? pick one? kind of -- make some sense of it. and that's what we did, but i -- i felt that the movie had some gold dust on it. i just thought to myself -- you know, it didn't -- you know, it didn't need me, and the guy said, i do need you. i said, let's work on this part, to make him meaningful. i think it came off that way. >> totally. yes. >> to make it real to people who obviously don't know these women, katherine johnson was given the presidential medal of freedom by president obama, something named after her at nasa. you really get the feeling these were real women. one is still alive? >> yeah. they're special, and why are we so sprourprised? >> yeah. >> why are we so surprised
