differences, for sure. mall fights sent post holiday shoppers scram xwliblin across the country and in some cases, responding in riot gear. morgan radford is on long island. >> reporter: good morning. dozens of shoppers injured as does is of fights and false reports caused chaos at malls throughout the country, panic, even evacuations at places like this, roosevelt mall here in new york. post christmas mayhem striking malls all across the country. in this new jersey mall, pandemonium when a person shouted gun in response to a chair being slammed after a fight. >> just running, running, running. everybody was running. we took shelter in some kind of store. >> reporter: 5,000 shoppers tried to escape what they believed was a life threatening ordeal, abandoning meals in the food court. in ohio, police responded to reports of shots fired at

beechwood place mall. >> we had a sort of stampede. >> reporter: officers used pepper spray to disperse a large crowd fighting, later confirming that there were no gunshots. a juvenile taken into custody for assaulting a police officer. on monday, disturbances in more than 15 malls across the country were reported in at least a dozen states. in tennessee, incidents were reported in three separate malls. in manchester, connecticut, several fights broke out all at once. investigators estimating several hundred teens were involved. >> they just kind of started yelling, then started push being each other. >> reporter: this video shows an officer trying to control the crowd. five other police departments responded to the scene, one officer assaulted with no life threatening injuries. eight people were arrested forcing the mall to close its doors two hours before scheduled. >> looked like people were throwing punches, fighting. it was just a huge mob of people. it was insane. >> reporter: despite multiple reports of gunfire, police found

no weapons. still, no indication that any of these incidents were connected. tamron? carson? >> scary stuff at the mall. a war of words is escalating this morning between president-elect trump and president obama over the election and a key u.s. ally. nbc's hallie jackson has more on that for us. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, tamron, good morning to you. another fairly quiet day for the president-elect here in south florida as he spends the holidays at mar-a-lago in palm beach. but that doesn't mean that donald trump is disappearing all together. on twitter, he's taking aim not just at the united nations but at president obama, too. new accusations now flying that the u.s. orchestrated a controversial u.n. security council resolution meant to send a warning to israel. >> but we have proof. i don't believe it, we know it. we will he a share it with the incoming administration through the appropriate channels. >> reporter: israeli officials arguing they'll give their evidence to the next

administration as the current administration flatly denies it had anything to do with that resolution. including senior white house aide ben rhodes saying, "the notion that we were somehow involved in drafting this is just not true." >> do you not believe -- do you not trust the u.s. government when they deny having anything to do with this? >> well, ben rhodes is an expert at fiction. >> reporter: the clash infuriating israelis and underscoring the chill between prime minister benjamin netanyahu and president obama. with some high-profile republicans now threatening to try to yank funding from the united nations as trump himself tweets the international organization has great potential but right now is just a club for people to get together, talk, and have a good time. so sad." that war of words not the only one trump's involved in. after president obama's new comments in a podcast about what might have happened if he ran for a third term, based on his vision for the country.

>> i'm confident that if i had run again, and articulated it, i think i could have mobilized a majority of the american people to rally behind it. >> reporter: trump, taking exception to the hypothetical, unconstitutional scenario, tweeting -- no way president obama could have beaten him, pointing to jobs leaving, isis, the health care law. the president later hinting hillary clinton may have been too cautious in her race. >> if you think you're winning, then you have a tendency, just like in sports, maybe to play it safer. >> reporter: and in contrast to trump's unusually vocal comments for a president-elect, weighing in on matters of international diplomacy, for example, president obama's philosophy -- stay quiet. at least for now. >> i have to be quiet for a while. i -- and i don't mean politically. i mean internally. i have to still myself and -- >> that's going to take some time. >> yes. >> reporter: overnight the

today. elsewhere this storm is packing a mighty punch. this morning, a familiar sound. digging out. >> how the heck am i getting out of here. >> reporter: after a winter wallop swallowed cars and surrounded homes trapping families inside, snowdrifts so massive they blocked front doors leaving a perfect imprint. a difficult back-to-work commute today across much of the northern plains. in north dakota, blinding snow, wild wind, and near zero visibility on the roads. a 240-mile stretch of i-94 closed at one point. in minnesota, this ice house broke through the frozen lake as temperatures plummeted. on the roads, forecasters warned up to half an inch of ice could freeze over, travel erls urers bring extra flashlights, food and water. and ten anglers left stranded after the ice sheet they were on broke away, responders deploying

an ice angel rescue boat to bring them back to shore. the forecast at airports -- anything but merry the day after christmas. nearly 400 u.s. flights canceled monday. more than 3,500 delayed. passengers left stranded, laying on mats, waiting for answers. but for those who made it home, a winter wonderland for kids and dogs alike. road travel could be treacherous today in the pacific northwest and the dakotas. we can see some trouble spots in the eastern half of the country as well from texas all the way up into maine. carson? tamron? >> ron, thank you so much. we'll have more on the forecast -- including near-record warmth on the east coast in just a bit. but now to a huge sinkhole threatening nearly two dozen homes in michigan. state of emergency has now been declared as engineers rush to save part of a neighborhood that has seen this type of damage before. here's nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: this morning, a suburban detroit neighborhood is literally on the edge. >> we're kind of planning for the worst case scenario.

>> reporter: frazier, michigan, now under a state of emergency after this massive sinkhole opened up. three homes deemed uninhabitable. at least 22 families evacuated. >> we've seen the bricks fall from the side of the house. we saw the separating at the front of the house. >> reporter: demetrius smith is terrified. her home is next. >> if it swallows his house, it might take ours with it. >> reporter: officials believe that an 11-foot wide sue e sewe buried may have burst causing the sinkhole to farm, nearly impacting a gas and water main forcing the city to shut off those utilities. and this isn't the first deep problem for the area. same road caved in back in 2004. this latest sinkhole is even larger. 250 feet long and 100 feet wide. david bogden rushed out grabbing what he could in minutes. >> yeah. clothes and valuables. and christmas presents. >> reporter: authorities are now pumping sewage into a nearby

river worried worry the sludge might back up into basements. engineers say it could be weeks before residents are allowed back into their homes. for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc news. breaking overnight, rescue teams have found a flight recorder from the russian plane that crashed into the black sea over the weekend. all 92 people aboard are believed to have died sunday morning when the military plane went down two minutes of a taking off from sochi. the 84 passengers included dozens of singers from russia's world famous military choir who were headed to russia's base in syria. officials hope the flight recorder or black box will provide clues as to why that plane crashed. and some football news now. the dallas cowboys proving once again last night that they are indeed the team to beat in the nfc. cowboys took on the detroit lions on monday night football. it was a close game until late in the third quarter. take a look. >> ryan's going to throw -- and

we're following some breaking news this morning. sky force 10 over the scene of a crash and fire at a gas station in philadelphia's oxford circle neighborhood. this was just within the last hour, a tractor crashed into the gas station. both the tractor trailer and gas station were on fire. crews arrived quickly to get control of the flames. nbc 10 was there on the ground after the crash. there are no reports of any injuries. police are staying on the scene at this hour. you can tap the nbc 10 app and stay with us on air for updates. let's get to meteorologist krystal klei with a look at your weather. dreary but the temps are pretty

flight recorder from the russian military plane that crashed into the black sea over the weekend. all 92 people on board are believed to have died. 5 of 6 inmates who escaped from a tennessee jail on christmas day are to you back in custody. they broke out by removing a toilet. the hole giving them access to a path outside. officials are still looking for the lone escapee. also this morning, we're learning more about the sudden shocking death of pop star george plikl michael. his partner speaking out. nbc's kelly cobiella is in london. >> reporter: good morning. you can really see the impact this man had on so many people. people still out here in front of his london home. in north london. paying tribute to the late singer, this as stories begin to emerge about an alleged addiction and a secret generosity. new details on george michael's final days.

behind the music, the talent, a troubled soul. this the most recent picture of the singer in public taken in september. hardly recognizable. neighbor sara simpson says she saw him a few weeks ago at a restaurant. >> he was at the in extable ane he was very quiet. he didn't look well but he was with his friends. we thought it was just respectful to leave him be. >> reporter: on monday michael's long-time boyfriend tweeted out how he discovered the singer christmas morning. it is a christmas i will never forget, finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning. i will never stop missing you. a friend according to ""the daily telegraph," saying the singer was struggling with addiction. george michael was a star at just 18 and he said he found fame hard to manage. his run-ins with the law well known. arrested in 1998 for exposing himself to an undercover

policeman in l.a. caught with drugs in london in 2006. a driving ban in britain in 2007. arrested again for drugs in 2008. and in 2010, after crashing into a london store, four weeks in prison. michael smoked cannabis in front of cameras but always denied he had an addiction and he always bounced back, even after a pneumonia scare in 2011. >> the hospital they rushed me to was absolutely the best place in the world i could have been. >> reporter: in recent months michael stayed out of the spotlight. >> he became very, very reclusive. he wasn't seen around that much. he didn't do very much. but an amazing career. i mean i think that whatever personal demons he had, he had to deal with. but let's hope his career is his

have lived through. she told of her incredible story of survival after tracking 25 miles in the wilderness. some aren't just calling it fortunate, they're calling it miraculous. >> it is just sart statarting t in. it feels surreal. >> reporter: karen klein incredibly survived a harrowing ordeal. the 47-year-old pennsylvania mom, her husband, eric, and 10-year-old son, isaac, were in las vegas for a holiday getaway. >> family vacation. week long over the holiday. >> reporter: they decided to take a road trip, visit a world wonder. >> we would go to bryce canyon, spend the night and go to the north rim. >> reporter: but it was there in the grand canyon's harsh north rim that she says everything went south. their cell phone gps recommending a short cut. >> it diverted us on a forest road. >> reporter: that the family realized too late was a wrong turn to a narrow, closed road. eventually getting stuck in the

mud. >> for an hour we tried to get the car out. we had no cell service. we couldn't call anybody to help us out. and it was decided that, look, there is a main road up ahead and i have professional and recreational experience, life-long in the outdoors. so i said, well, i'll just walk up to the main road. i can do this. like i'm a unarer. >> reporter: klein found nothing but the dead of night, wandering way off course. >> it got to be about 1:30 in the morning. at this point i had walked about 26 miles. i kept myself awake. i just talked to myself, rocked back and forth to stay warm. they said in that 36 hours i walked about 30 miles. >> reporter: she survived off twigs, snow and the will to see her family again. >> i can't leave my son without a mompy can't leave my husband without a wife. i'm not letting my parents bury me. >> reporter: meanwhile, her

husband decided to head the other direction 15 miles until he got lucky. >> got one bar of cell service and called the park ranger called 911. they sent the rescue team. that was about 3:00 in the afternoon to find me. then they found me 2:30 in the morning. >> reporter: klein was found and airlifted to safety, recovering with frost bitten fingers and toes. but smiling. >> i think karen is a very brave woman who did the most she could to help her family. >> reporter: a dangerous journey turned christmas miracle. >> i was determined that this is not -- this is now how my life is going to end. >> get this -- just hours after karen's rescue with, a major winter storm hit the region that officials say would have made it impossible to find her. doctors are currently working with her in the hospital, hopeful she will make a full recovery. >> who plays her in the movie? that's just unbelievable. >> amazing she had that experience to be able to survive that.

looking for love. one of betty's matches caught her eye. >> he was a chemical engineer in malaysia and that he would love to have a connection here in the united states. >> touched your heart. >> within two weeks he wanted to send me roses. two weeks. >> you gave him your address. >> i didn't realize that within two weeks given someone the address to send roses would affect my life forever. >> reporter: for six weeks betty communicated with a man who called himself donald moore. he planned to visit her in atlanta at christmas. >> that was kind like a scene out of a movie, thinking, oh, well, i'm meeting this stranger at the airport for the first time. >> reporter: and then came the scam. >> he had been allegedly hit by a bicycle and his briefcase was stolen. what did he ask you for? >> he asked me if he could borrow $5,000. >> your mind was telling you -- >> don't do this. and then the other part was saying, well, you know, this

person really cares for you, he has indicated that he just is crazy about you. you might not find this again. >> reporter: betty wired him $5,000. >> i thought he should be able to get an airline ticket, get back to the united states and go to his bank and get his money. and pay me back. >> reporter: but then he sent more requests for money, a problem with his engineering job, costing $120,000. >> i wrote him back and i said, i just cannot send you that money. and he said, you have to do this for me to get there. and then he sent me a fake malaysian contract. >> reporter: betty wired him the $120,000. but he never made it for christmas. >> he said that he had been held up in australia and that emigratie immigrations had him in like a cell there. >> reporter: she went to her local sheriff's office because they could not help her with an international crime. >> he says if you don't send me

more money you won't get your other money back. >> and dug deep. >> by the time it was over with i had sent $270,000. my life savings, my inheritance, my -- everything. >> reporter: betty is not alone according to the fbi, americans lost $120 million to online dating fraud in just the first six months of this year. scammers typically target senior citizens, longing to get back into the dating pool. betty has contacted match.com, the fbi and her congressmen to investigate her case. match.com says they use technology that identifies possible fraudulent behavior and require customers to pledge not to send money to other users. >> according to the federal trade commission, ways to spot a roman scam -- spelling and gra mattical errors. professes love too quickly. claims to be from thetrafrling

it smells good in here. welcome back this morning. on "today food," a perfect meal to ring in the new year, a delicious steak dinner for two. ed brown, thanks for being here. smells great in here. where do you want to begin? this is all about the meat here. >> it is all about the meat. this is a prime dry-aged creek stone farm steak from our favorite purveyor. it's really about what can we least do to mess it up.

>> give me just a second on the dry age part. is that something that's ready available for people when you go out or do you have to ask the butcher? >> you can find it. dry aged means that some of the moisture has evaporated. the protein gets denser. meat becomes more tender, more flavorful. >> i get this dry-aged meat the night before i am going to cook. i leave it in the fridge. >> i want it to dry out more so you get a good sear. >> less is more. let the meat be the star. >> salt, freshly ground pepper. just a pinch of oil. i'm going to put it right on the fat side in the pan. >> talk to me about this pan frying searing part versus just grilling. fundamentally what's different? >> i like to get crust on my steak rather than by grilling where the fat drips through. i'm rendering a little bit from

the top. that's going to get us started, then we go to one side. >> that fat cap on bottom provides some of the fat so when you turn it, that helps you get the crust. >> we sear it on one side. >> how long is the searing? >> about two and a half, three minutes. looking for that nice crusting. >> you spent a little less than ten minutes doing some searing work before you end up baking it off. >> exactly. then it goes on to the sheet pan and into the oven. >> the hardest part here is just trying to get the temperature right in the middle. what's the way we should do? medium? medium-rare? >> i like it medium, medium-rare. about 12, 15 minutes in the oven. the most important part is going to be resting. let that meat rest. it is going to be so much better an the juices will stay inside instead of rushing out. >> every time i let the meat rest, when i serve it, it ends up being almost cold. >> i don't need to eat my steak blasting hot. warmish is fine. >> i'm almost done.

this is perfection. >> if you've got the searing done, you bake it 12, 15 minutes. let it rest for a good ten minutes. then cut it up. >> acorn squash. split it, take the seeds out. we cut these like this. depending on the size of your squash. into the bowl. skin stays on. syrup. a little bit of oil. cinnamon. clove. >> how did you come up with the acorn squash as a good pairing for steak? >> just because i think it is a hearty sort of this time of year flavor. these are meaty, also. these just get tossed with all these ingredients. put them on the baking sheet. >> syrup, olive oil, spices. put a little dot of butter on each one. >> that always helps. >> it sure does.

and some water right on the baking tray so that they don't stick to the tray and they don't burn. it also creates a little steam while they're cooking. flake salt right on top. that will give you sort of that -- >> these are pretty firm. >> they cook actually quite rapidly. those will just go in the oven. 15 to 20 minutes. >> ooh. wine! ed, you shouldn't have. so glad you did. >> listen. how about mine? >> ed, this is delicious. acorn squash is so flavorful. it is sweet and just -- just perfect. >> here's my favorite part when you get to slice the steak. >> i love this part, too. is there any particular part after slicing? >> just cutting across. >> you cook it, you let it sit. >> see? the juices are not running all over the table. they've stayed inside the steak. you want to salt and a piece with some fat on it. that's what tastes good. >> wow, that's delicious. >> to go with it, tuscan kale just cooked with garlic and

my mom who is so happy and a big fan of both of y'all's, she took down her christmas tree already. >> already. >> i talked to her last night. she is the first person i talked to in the morning and last person and night and 100 times in the middle. she's i'm so tired, i took down the whole tree, everything is down. her neighborhood they have a rule where after like january 2nd they get fined. but it is nowhere near that. i said mom, you did all of that work. she said, bye, the tree is done, christmas is over, move on. >> you do all that work, then just like a broadway show, poof, it's gone. i don't like to carry stuff over. it is a little superstition but i don't like to carry things over into the new year. mine is coming down the next couple days but definitely before january 1st. >> before january 1st. >> oh, absolutely. it's gone. it's done. enough. the holiday's over. >> that's the point of holiday.
