home in mays landing, atlantic county. they were hedding to a relative's home in north carolina, but they never made it. today a farmer discovered them on his property in dim widdy county, virginia. let's begin with nbc10's drew smith live in mays landing. >> reporter: we're told barbara briely is in serious condition in the hospital tonight. we're told she was not conscious when found up against a tree. her great granddaughter, who was with her there we're told is okay, appears to be fine, and is with family. meanwhile back here in their hometown after days of increasing worry, they're finally is some relief tonight. virginia state police shared these photos of barbara briely's suv stuck in the woods near a rural dirt road. the great-grandmother from atlantic county was there for several days, but she had enough drinks and snacks to survive there along with her 5-year-old great granddaughter la'myra. friends back home are thankful for the property owner who

spotted them. >> when i heard she was found, i was just very happy and thankful because it's just been very, you know, nerve-racking to know she was missing and not hearing anything from her. >> reporter: family members from mays landing did not comment on the discovery. they spent their christmas and the following days getting the word out about the missing loved ones. >> they're very nice. >> reporter: neighbors and friends joined the efforts, spreading the photos on social media. clues came today with this surveillance video, where briley asked for help with her gps. >> i spent about 30 minutes, 45 minutes with her in the store, talking to her, trying to make sure everything was okay. >> reporter: but it came down to an alert property owner. if not for him, this story could have ended a lot differently. >> tears of joy. we're so happy that they're found safe and sound. >> reporter: this south jersey police department is the lead investigating agency on what happened in virginia. we're told they don't expect any foul play, but they still don't know how these two ended up in

the woods. so they expect they may have to do some interviews with that great-grandmother to figure out what went wrong. we're live in mays landing. i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. breaking news now in the entertainment world. famed actress debbie reynolds has passed away just a day after her daughter, carrie fisher, died. nbc's chris pallone has the breaking details. >> reporter: debbie reynolds was the quintessential hollywood star, appearing on stage and screen for nearly seven decades, now in a twist befitting a true hollywood tragedy, reynolds has died at 84 while mourning the death of her also beloved daughter, carrie fisher. in this video from tmz, an ambulance is seen leaving reynolds' son's home wednesday afternoon. she was there making funeral arrangements for her daughter. ♪ it's that song and film that made debbie reynolds famous back in 1952. singing in the rain cast the 19 dwrld alongside song and dance veterans gene kelly and donald o'connor in what would come to be known as the classic movie

musical. the el paso, texas, native had won the miss burbank beauty pageant four years earlier, and a talent scout quickly signed her to a contract. ♪ often cast as the wholesome innocent, reynolds starred in more than 20 films in the 1950s and the '60s. tammy and the bachelor gave her a hit song. the unsink al molly brown brought an oscar nomination. >> nothing's going to get me down. >> reporter: but as her career soared, her personal life suffered. a high profile marriage to singer eddie fisher brought two children including carrie fisher. but it ended in a bitter divorce, the first of three failed marriages. >> i don't choose well. i don't blame anybody but myself, but i just seem to have very poor taste in men. >> reporter: when movie roles diminished in the '70s, reynolds took her talents to the stage both on broadway and elsewhere. for debbie reynolds, her homes both on stage and on screen made

her one of hollywood's most versatile performers. her son, todd, told nbc news wednesday night, she's gone to be with carrie. she loved taking care of her, and now she's gone to be with her. chris pallone, nbc news. turning to first alert weather, we are tracking snow for some for the morning commute. the nbc10 first alert radar shows that system moving in. we have issued a first alert for the lehigh valley and berks county where people could see some accumulation tomorrow. whether you get snow or rain, it all depends on where you live. that's why the nbc10 first alert neighborhood forecast has you covered. for that, let's go to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more. glenn. >> yeah, jacqueline. it's dry across the entire area now, but it's not going to be in the morning. it's going to be wet and in some areas it's going to be white. this is in the lehigh valley and berks county only. those are the only areas in the first alert for some snow during the morning rush. 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. so it's just a limited time

period too. could get an inch of snow on grassy surfaces. briefly low visibility as the snow comes down hard for a brief period of time. it could stick to some untreated surfaces. look how cold it is in allentown now. 23 degrees. while it's 33 in philadelphia. so those temperatures are going to be critical. the temperatures will be coming up toward daybreak, but will they come up enough to have this snow melt as it hits? that's going to be the big question. philadelphia should be warm enough for rain, and temperatures well above freezing. the p.a. suburbs, kind of a marginal case, at least in the beginning. could be some snow involved. lehigh valley, pretty good bet there's going to be snow. at 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., but eventually that is going to be changing over to rain as well. more on the timing and what to expect for the holiday weekend coming up. >> you can track tomorrow morning's snow and rain and any wintry mix that heads our way this winter. you can get live radar on the

free nbc10 app. new at 11:00, a man is shot and killed near a north philadelphia fast food restaurant. police say 14 shots were fired near the checkers at west butler and broad street. a 20-year-old man was struck in the head and chest and died at the hospital. at least three bullets also hit the restaurant, but no one inside was injured. no arrests have been made. new tonight, the brother of a murdered local real estate agent talks to nbc10. the victim's ex-girlfriend, martina west cost, allegedly pulled the trigger. she is now charged. tonight the victim's brother got emotional as he talked about feeling support from the community after his brother's death yesterday. >> it's -- it's very moving. i appreciate on behalf of the family and like to see his legacy live on well beyond his years in life. >> bruce went on to say he had

never met westcott. today our cameras captured exclusive video of homicide detectives at her home. investigators say she shot terrell bruce execution-style while they were driving in mount airy yesterday. he then lost control of his suv and crashed. police say the ex-girlfriend has confessed and faces decades in prison. now to an nbc10 exclusive. the birth mother of a 14-year-old girl who was murdered talks only to us. rose hunsicker tells us she gave her daughter, grace, up for adoption back in 2004. the girl and her two siblings went to live with sara packer and her husband. grace's remains were found near a dam in luzerne county on halloween months after she disappeared. the distraught birth mother is pleading for justice for grace. >> a horrible death of a little girl that should have never been. she's never going to get to see her sweet 16. she's never going to get to see anything. >> that was the biological mother. this is the adoptive mother,

sara packer. she is now living in horsham. police say she remains a person of interest in grace's murder. president obama is now preparing to retaliate against russia for its alleged election hacking. two senior u.s. officials tell nbc news that an executive order against russia will be updated as early as tomorrow or friday. it is believed to include economic sanctions along with possible covert cyber options. intelligence officials believe russian president vladimir putin personally directed the cyber attacks to interfere with the presidential election. russia has denied involvement. up next, students stranded. two dozen band members heading to rome to perform get stuck in philadelphia. nbc10 responds to help save their trip. and i'm tracking that new year's eve forecast. plus snow for parts of our area tomorrow morning. it's next in my full forecast. plus adult content from this

back to our top story tonight. an atlantic county grandmother and her 5-year-old great granddaughter are found tonight after disappearing on christmas eve. they were trying to get to a relative's house in north carolina but were rescued today in virginia. our sister station joins us in dinwiddie county. stephanie, a farmer found them on his property, and police say it is so lucky that he did. >> reporter: you know, they are incredibly lucky on behalf of this property owner because as you can see, this is a dark, remote area. now, this dirt road, barbara, happened to get down to is actually winding back into the woods of a private party where barbara happened to get off about a mile into the woods, and

her car became disabled, blending into the area around it. so how did the property owner find the pair? well, he happens to make a habit of walking the land once in a while to check on any possible hunters. today around 5:00, he did just that, except he took a different path today, going deeper into the woods and happening to find barbara and la'myra. now, it is important to note this is the same county investigators were able to pinpoint barbara's cell phone as recent as yesterday morning. but while that narrowed down this multiple-state search, investigators admit that if it weren't for the action of this property owner, barbara and la'myra would probably still be missing tonight. >> a remarkable outcome. stephanie, thank you for that. now to this. new video into nbc10 of a department store thief in bucks county. you can see him smash his way

through the front door and right into a kohl's's in may field township this morning. once inside he made his way right to that jewelry counter where he did some more smashing. police say he made off with anywhere from $60,000 to $100,000 in jewelry and other items. several homeowners in lehigh valley are back inside after a sinkhole forced them out. the utility company tells us it was caused by a water main break and then the sinkhole caused a natural gas line to crack. new at 11:00, an instant nbc10 response when a group of students gets stranded in philadelphia. their band is heading to rome to perform, but they got stuck at philadelphia international. nbc10's keith jones is live at their hotel with the happy ending to their long story tonight. keith. >> reporter: that's right, jacqueline. about 28 students are sleeping here at the double tree hotel in south philadelphia, very close to the airport. the rest of their bandmates are in rome, but that's going to change thanks to nbc10.

long faces on a long day. mostly spent on the floor of philly international. they made the trip from the gulf coast of florida only to doodle when their american airlines flight was delayed and snooze when it was canceled due to weather. >> it's beyond disappointing. it's a punch in the gut. >> reporter: terry bennett spent two years organizing this trip, which cost each student $3,500. >> the trip package was close to $300,000 for the whole group, and we've missed, depending on when we get our flight, three, four days of travel, half of our cost. >> reporter: you're saying $150,000. >> fair estimate. >> reporter: she has a reason to fret. bennett's daughters are stranded and heart broking. >> i don't like seeing my mom like that. it's not cool, especially like when she's a parent to all of us, not just me. >> hopefully we can get over there soon and that we might be able to extend our trip a few days. >> reporter: what's worse -- >> they don't have their instruments. they're in rome. they can't even practice here. >> reporter: but nbc10 stepped

in and contacted american airlines. soon after we arrived, an agent from the airline did so as well. the band got their post-christmas wish. >> we're getting on a bus at 4:00 a.m. we're going to drive to new york, and we're all getting on a flight. >> reporter: that's great news there, but unfortunately they've already missed some rehearsals, some performances, and even a parade. they say bottom line, the thing that counted here was to get over with their bandmates in rome and share that lifetime experience, jackie. >> what an ordeal for them. keith, has american airlines offered any type of refund for them? >> reporter: well, the airline has since apologized. they're fpaying for two nights stay at the hotel in philadelphia. they say they're going to look into whether or not there's a possibility for a refund of at least some of these ticket prices to get over to rome. live in south philadelphia, keith jones, nbc10 news. >> hopefully safe travels for the rest of this journey. keith, thank you.

turning to this, you might see snow on your morning commute tomorrow. we have issued a first alert for the lehigh valley and berks county. other places will get rain. nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking it all in the first alert neighborhood forecast. glenn. >> yeah, and that's one of the reasons we do the neighborhood forecast, because we can get more specific here. it's just the lehigh valley and berks county in this particular case and just from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. the atmosphere is going to warm up and any snow is going to change to rain, even in that area. there could be a little bit of accumulation. the low visibility, if there's any kind of burst of snow, could be an issue for travel, and that's the reason for the first alert. you see how cold it is in parts of the lehigh valley already. 23 degrees even in some of the p.a. suburbs at 27. so we've got to monitor these numbers hour by hour. eri erika martin will be in in the morning to show you how these have changed.

mertztown, 25. allentown is 27. 25 in whitehall and bath. 24 in walnut port. 25 in easton. they've got to go up a long way for everything to be just melting when that snow falls because it is going to snow in parts of the area. you can see it moving straight to the east. it's not a huge storm. it's moving fast, so there's a limited time period here. here's 5:30 in the morning. could start off as just a few sprinkles or not reaching the ground. then look at 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. we're starting to get some snow in berks and lehigh. it's definitely snowing in the poconos then. here's 9:00 a.m., and we have the snow near allentown and northward. you can see the changeover continuing to go from south to north. so the later you are in the morning, the more likely it is to just be raining. even in allentown where it's in the mid-20s right now. here's a wider view. 8:00 a.m., this model has temperatures above freezing pretty quickly. maybe too quickly considering

how cold it is right now. but the trend is going to be for warming and then clearing in the afternoon. so watch what happens here as we go hour by hour through the neighborhoods. the middle of the night, it's just cloudy, but here comes the snow. reading, quakertown, 4:30 in the morning. a little rain in wilmington. then the snow, allentown, quakertown. near freezing temperatures. there's reading too. then we as go through the morning, you'll see more and more of these places becoming rainy. by noon, everybody has rain, and then it clears out later. for new year's eve, we don't have to worry about it clearing out. it looks like it's going to be dry, seasonable temperatures. okay, it's new year's eve, it's supposed to be cold. and for the mummer's, temperatures not too bad. average or a little above average. not much wind and a mix of sun and clouds. and that also means for the eagles on sunday afternoon, it's

going to be dry. temperatures slightly above average. so a pretty good weekend.

tonight, more hatchimal headaches for parents. a south jersey woman says the toy she bought started making inappropriate noises. brittany may from west deputyford says the furry toy started making the uncomfortable sounds after it hatched from its shell. the video shows it continuing to make the sounds for minutes. there have been hundreds of defect complaints about hatchimals. they range from faulty motors, broken eggs or the animal getting stuck in that lower shell. last night nbc10 spoke to a local family who even believed their hatchimal was cursing. the toy is made by spin masters, which says they are adding more
