for many, the party has started. winter fest they're claiming their spots for the fireworks show. this show is especially popular for families. they're expecting thousands of people to be here and pack the delaware river front tonight. we're here at winter fest, you get a front row seat. even if that's on the ice, the best part is that coming down here, admission is free. now the fireworks begin in just a few minutes, again you can watch it live right here on nbc 10, but if you want to see in person, there's another show that will be taking place, tonight at midnight. to ring in the new year. reporting live from penn's landing, andrea cline-thomas, nbc 10. >> let's go to erika martin for the fireworks forecast. >> we have a dry for the most part forecast. i want to show you satellite and radar image. picking up on clouds moving in from the southwest to the northeast. crystal did mention it this

you're looking live at new york city's times square. more than a million people are expected to watch the ball drop at midnight. security is a top priority. there are 2,000 extra officers on top of additional efforts to keep the crowds safe up there. to an nbc 10 exclusive, for the first time since leaving the hospital, a lehigh valley mom is sharing her story of survival.

karen klein and her family got stranded in the grand canyon last week. she, her husband and her young son were on a trip when their car got stuck in a ditch in the middle of the wilderness. klein, an avid runner walked 30 miles in the bitter cold to go find help. all three were rescued. klein is back home in northampton county and said she feels lucky to be alive. >> i can't believe i'm home. i can't believe i'm home. when we pulled into the driveway, i couldn't stop sobbing. >> today also marked karen's birthday, her family says this year it's a celebration of life. we'll have more of our interview with her tonight on nbc 10 news at 11:00. and now to the presidential transition, president-elect donald trump sends out a new year's message and takes a dig at his critics. he tweeted quote, happy new year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly. they just don't know what to do.

love. >> mr. trump didn't go into detail about which enemies he was talking about. the president-elect is currently marking the new year in florida. tonight the man who investigators say shot and killed a pennsylvania state trooper is dead. 23-year-old trooper landon weaver was shot while responding to a domestic incident at a home in june yetta township in huntington county last night. after a massive manhunt, the suspect jason robinson was found at a mobile home overnight. he was killed during a confrontation with troopers. robinson had been released on bail this month for car theft charges. governor tom wolf has ordered state flags across pennsylvania to be lowered at half staff in honor of trooper weaver. that includes the state police bar barracks in wynnefield heights, weaver had been on the police force for about a year. in south jersey, a search is under way for a man who

approached two teenaged girls while naked. 15-year-old and 14-year-old said the man started following them while they walked on westerlily drive. he then got out of his black jeep cherokee and ran after the teens with no clothes on. the girls got away unharmed. if you have any information, you're asked to call police. a body is found in a trash can at the jersey shore, tonight investigators are looking for clues. the discovery was made at south carolina avenue and adriatic avenue this morning. police tell nbc 10 the victim was a man, but have not released his name. it's not clear how he died. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> i'm meteorologist erika martin. a live look outside. it's quiet right now with mostly cloudy skies, on radar and just one moment i'll show you light rain moving into the area. i'll show you the bottom of the

screen. otherwise conditions are quiet. however we have a strong breeze right now coming out of the southwest ranging between 10-20 miles per hour. satellite and radar image picking up on the clouds moving across the delaware valley. notice we're seeing light greens moving into philadelphia, trenton seeing light greens, not making it to the ground. you may see one or two passing sprinkles. otherwise lehigh valley seeing a wintry mix here. not making it to the ground. good enough, another hour you start to see a little bit of a wintry mix for parts of the lehigh valley. something to be mindful. especially if the roads are slick. you can see blues and some whites here telling us we have a little bit of some light snow and a little bit of a wintry mix as well. keep in mind as we get this going through 7:30 p.m. seeing light pockets here. for the most part this is going to be a mostly cloudy night. however stometimes the atmosphee can squeeze out a few sprinkles. by midnight everything starts to

2017 has begun for many, including russia. large fireworks show was held in moscow to mark the start of the new year. thousands were on hand to mark the annual celebration. the new year will mean a new home for a delaware zoo's tiger. today people came to say good-bye to zana. a new beginning celebration was held for the 8-year-old siberian tiger at the brandywine zoo in wilmington. she's the only tilinger at the zoo and she's being transferred

♪ ♪ the new year has already begun in parts of the world. in japan, people ushered in 2017 at a tokyo park tonight. they held their annual balloon release, and each balloon carries a wish for the new year. here in philadelphia, some people are celebrating the new year with music. the choral arts of philadelphia performed bach's christmas oratorio in west philadelphia.

organizers say the celebration is meant to show philadelphia's diverse cultural landscape.
