deep south. one right here south of atlanta. this one took out a huge oak tree six feet in diameter. you see where the mobile home was just crushed and split in two. there were seven residents in the mobile home. four were found dead this morning in the bathroom. this morning, tragedy in the town of rehoboth, alabama. officials say four people were killed when a reported tornado struck, sending a tree and power lines crashing through their mobile home. seven people were huddled inside, seeking shelter at the time. damage in the area is extensive. that same series of storms, leaving a trail of destruction from texas to florida. in louisiana, strong winds. >> it's like a hurricane-nado. >> buildings blown apart. >> all in the air. >> reporter: this semi truck overturned. in mississippi, a tornado reducing this structure to rubble. flash floods stranding motorists. the driver of this car

scrambling to escape the rising water. near houston, a close call for the family who lives in this home, struck by lightning. >> you could tell it was bad very quickly. >> everyone made it out safely. >> we have power lines down, trees down. >> reporter: in alabama, the city of jackson hit hard. >> you okay? you all right, buddy? >> reporter: from lions to lemurs, they were cleaning up. >> we can account for a lot of the animals. a lot are under stress. >> reporter: that's how people feel in the deep south waking up and assessing the damage from the outbreak. it's rare to see tornadoes in january, especially here in houston county. they've only had three reported tornadoes since 1950. and these are the first fatalities from twisters in 65 years. >> mike seidel, thank you very much. al roker is back in new york with more on those storms. what's on the horizon? good to see you.

>> good to see you, too, kate. matt, belatedly. the storms are pushing up in northern florida and on into the mid-atlantic states. that moisture is pushing up to the north. we're not looking at weather as severe as we saw yesterday, there's going to be big airport delays for the first workday back into the new year, as the rain moves northeast. we'll have snowshowers finishing things up. we look for anywhere from an inch to an inch and a half of rain. for columbus, all the way to boston. the other big problem is going to be a lot of fog, airport delays along the i-95 corridor. people have to pack their patience traveling on the roads and in the air. you talk about airport delays. nothing to do with weather for a change. al, thank you very much. now, to the major chaos nationwide, after a customs computer average. thousands of travelers are stranded for hours. kerry sanders at the airport in miami with the latest. kerry, good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning. the systems are back up and running. we've seen passengers stri s tr in from a flight from brazil. but 8,000 passengers here in miami and many more across the country, faced quite a delay because of downed computers. imagine you're a passenger and it's a travel day from hell. you're in a foreign company, you have to get on a plane. get on the plane, 8-hour, 11-hour flight from rome. and you land after getting off of that cramped plane and wait in a line with nowhere to sit, except for your luggage. all the while, waiting for customs computers to come back online. overnight, a holiday headache for passengers during one of the busiest travel days of the year. a four-hour computer outage, in the u.s. customs and border protection system. left thousands of travelers at long lines, causing chaos across the country. in miami, passengers on 30 international flights packed

terminals as they waited to get their passports processed. >> i got off of the plane. i had no information. i was trying to get through customs. it was a sea of hundreds of people there. >> reporter: another passenger posting to social media, i see the light. two hours later in customs line. all systems have been down. in atlanta, travelers were not amused, either. comparing the long lines to theme parks. >> it's still going. this has to be at least 5,000 people in line. this is worse than a disneyland line. >> reporter: in boston, the machines breaking the spirits of weary travelers. and one traveler trying to take the outage in strit. stride. >> you never know what you're going to get. >> reporter: they released a statement saying the computers were not hacked.

calling it a temporary outage with its processing systems. global entry, which is lot like tsa pre was no help. there's a question why customs did not have a system to backup. that's part of the ongoing investigation. >> kerry sanders, thank you. breaking news on the tragic nightclub attack in turkey. police carrying out new raids overnight as they search for a suspect. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in istanbul. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, katie. turkish police say they have arrested 14 people in those raids in operations carried out in istanbul and in the city of konia. they have the attackers fingerprints and are close to identifying him. the alleged terrorist who gunned down dozens of people in a popular istanbul nightclub on

new year's eve, filmed this selfie video days before the attack, turkish media reports. the video is being broadcast around the clock on local television in hopes that someone will find him. after killing 39 people in the club, most of them tourists from the middle east, he ditched his coat and dropped his guns. police confirm that's him, seen on cc tv, just after the attack, near the club, getting out of a cab. turkish media report, the cabbie threw him out because now, without his jacket, he didn't have money on him. he walks away, and isn't seen again. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. turkish launched a military attack in response, striking the government announced, around 100 isis targets inside syria, since sunday. but as police raided homes in istanbul last night, the most-wanted man in turkey remains at large. in front of the nice club this morning, there was a small peace

demonstration with turks coming out to say they've had enough of terrorism. matt? katie? >> richard, thank you. let's turn to politics now. lawmakers back on capitol hill this morning, returning from the holidays with a packed agenda ahead, president-elect trump's inauguration in just 17 days. we talk with one of his top advisers, kellyanne conway in a few minutes. let's start with hallie jackson on capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. republicans are raring to get going on capitol hill, now in control of both chambers. and soon, the white house. they're to-do list, feeling like a mile long. but even before this new congress gets into full swing, the gop's making a move, getting slammed by democrats as a backtrack on donald trump's promise to train the swamp. congress, counting down and already courting controversy. house republicans, in a surprise move, bucking their leadership to gut an independent ethics

office, created eight years ago, after a series of congressional scandals. >> and put it under the house ethics committee, which i call the fox in charge of the chicken coop committee. >> reporter: that new move, slammed by democrats, set to be voted on today, as the 115th congress gets sworn in, with plenty on their plate. number one for republicans -- repeal president obama's health care law. >> obama care repeal resolution will be the first item up. >> reporter: a congressional priority, after a campaign pledge repeated by the presiden president-elect on new year's eve. democrats will fight it, arguing millions of people could lose coverage. president obama set to make a rare appearance on the hill tomorrow to try to preserve his signature domestic policy. but it's almost assured the gop will get its way. now controlling both chambers of congress and the white house. the question then becomes, what will they replace it with?

while still keeping the most popular parts of the law. like protections for people with pre-existing conditions. the second big item on the congressional agenda, a possibly contentious fight for the president-elect's top cabinet picks. the exxon mobil ceo will face questions about his business ties to russia. >> the coziness with vladimir putin is alarming. and should have eliminated him, frankly. >> reporter: hearings have been set for jeff sessions, hoping to become attorney general. he will probably be asked to address accusations of racism that derailed his 1986 bid to become a federal judge. if senate republicans stay unified, trump will get the cabinet he wants. the third priority for congress, rolling back regulations. the house will vote this week on a bill that would let them target regulations put in place

under president obama. and there's plenty more donald trump could undo on his own. like actions on immigration and climate change. as soon as he takes office, in less than three weeks, his transition, winding down, with congress ramping up. on the topic of that transition, the president-elect's team, just this morning, naming their pick to be u.s. trade representative, robert lidezer. it's one of the few spots that he needed to fill. and he is not staying silent. he went on twitter to tweet about nuclear weapons. writing -- north korea just stated it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the u.s. it won't happen. the president-elect, not saying how. matt? >> all right, hallie. thank you very much. let's bring in kellyanne conway. she ran president-elect trump's campaign and will serve as his white house counselor. >> happy new year to both of you. >> yesterday, republicans in the

house made news. they took an independent office that was set up to oversee and police scandal in congress. they stripped its independence and put it under the control of congress. donald trump ran a campaign saying i'm going to drain the swamp in washington. doesn't it do the opposite? >> i don't want the viewers to be left with the impression there's no mechanism to investigate what i would be called consumer complaints, constituent complaints. there's a new office. and that will cut down in the overzealousness. >> is that independent of congress? >> the office could be. >> but it's not now. >> they are going to vote on it today. this was a particular committee voting by secret ballot. but the full congress will have an opportunity to speak out on this. >> will donald trump weigh in on this? >> he has not at the moment. i'm sure when he is -- feels the urge to weigh in on something, he certainly does. let me make very clear.

if a constituent has a complaint, they can do it. they have complained about the due process rights being compromised. they need protections, as well. >> let's talk about obamacare. number one, up for the new congress, is to repeal obamacare. is the republican congress willing to make ownership of this issue? and have they come up with something to replace obamacare? >> yes and yes. one of the priorities for president-elect trump and this congress would be to make it easier for americans to purchase health care across state lines. the way you would buy autoinsurance, for example. currently, you can't do that. we would talk about a more free market system, where you have a health savings account. you own it. it has your name on it. and you can control your spending for you and your family. this impacts women who are the chief health care officers of

their households. >> there's some aspects of the affordable care act that allows kids to stay on the parents' health care plans. is he committed to maintaining those parts of the law? and how will he do that without the individual mandate to pay for them? >> he has committed to retaining those pieces that his advisers will say are work. he'll be talking to his hhs secretary designee, tom price about it, and others in the field. it's an issue where the president-elect has received a great deal of counsel. i was in palm beach with him for meetings. it's been public that he met with the top health care experts in the country, the heads of the mayo clinic and brigham and young. he's getting -- johns hopkins. >> is he committed to those things? >> he's committed to repealing and replacing obamacare to something more fair. we hear about this and veterans care. they say, i thought i was going to get better coverage.

but i've been -- my hours were cut down to 25, to not get the coverage from an employer. i have two jobs, no coverage. it's people who thought they had great coverage. now, the premiums have increased. the choices have decreased and the quality is less. >> when is he going to have a press conference? he promised one to talk about conflict of interest with his business. last time he held one was 159 days ago. he told russian hackers to look for hillary clinton's e-mails. when is he going to hold a press conference and divulge what he knows about what others don't know about the hacking. >> he will have a briefing by top officials here in new york this week. at which time, he will perhaps learn more about what they say. we're tired of the insinuations and the blind quotes and people leaking to the press, rather than dealing directly with what may or may not have happened with the hacking. >> will he tell the officials what he knows? >> i think every president and

president-elect ought to know things. >> and is he getting that information from michael flynn? he does have close ties with vladimir putin. we have a photo from 2015 that shows him at a dinner with putin. is that where he is getting the information? >> he is getting information from a number of sources. he receives presidential daily briefings. that's a product. in addition to that product, the president-elect receives intelligence briefings from many sources. i would push back on the idea that someone is sitting at dinner with someone else has, quote, close ties and a coziness that nancy pelosi is trying to talk about. rex tillerson is an amazing pick because it's someone who has done business in 50 countries or so, in yemen, in russia, certainly. and somebody who understands how to negotiate and how to say no to some of the leaders when necessary. >> kellyanne conway. happy new year. nice to have you here. thank you very much. let's go back to al.

search for the gunman in the tragic shooting in istanbul. officers from a special operations unit carried out a raid on a home this morning. police confirmed this surveillance video shows the gunman getting out of a cab just after that new year's attack. and look at this dramatic crash and rescue caught on camera. an suv was stalled on an l.a. freeway new year's day, with no lights on, when another car slams into it from behind. the suv burst into flames. and witnesses raced into action to pull the driver to safety. he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive. let's go back to president-elect trump. his upcoming inauguration and what the u.s. relationship with russia might look like under his administration. nbc's kristen welker, outside of trump tower down the block. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. there's renewed focus on president-elect trump's

relationship with russian president vladimir putin this morning. russia as topic number one in his transition. but trump's focus on putin and his country is nothing new. >> i know things that other people don't know. >> reporter: as early as today, president-elect trump could clarify those cryptic comments and say what he knows about russia's interference with the u.s. presidential election, something that trump has questioned. >> what do you know that other people don't know? >> you'll find out on tuesday or wednesday. >> reporter: the accusations of russian hacking have cast a cloud over the november election, clearly getting under mr. trump's skinning putting u.s./russian relations under a spotlight. but trump and russian president vladimir putin have long been on each other's radar. in 2013, trump held the miss universe pageant in moscow. and wondered, will putin become my new best friend? but details about the actual relationship have been murky. in 2013, nbc asked trump if he

had a relationship with putin. >> i do have a relationship. >> reporter: but it was a different story this past july. >> i never met putin. >> reporter: mr. trump has often had high prize for his soon-to-be russian counterpart. tweeting he was very smart. when putin said he would not retaliate against new sanctions imposed by president obama. what's fuelling the new preoccupation with russia. he can find common ground in areas like isis. >> there's a lack of respect for president obama. he doesn't like i'm. and he doesn't respect him. >> reporter: he hasn't been shy about praising putin's leadership. >> the man has strong control over his country. he's been a leader far more than our president has been a leader. >> reporter: could there be something more, like trump's business ties with russia? >> we can find donald trump connected to something that's connected to russia. we have never had a president-elect that has deep and complicated business dealings, to which we have not

had access. >> reporter: russia is a recuring people in trump's cabinet picks, most notably his secretary of state, who won praise from his deals with putin. >> he does massive deals. i have tremendous respect for him. >> reporter: in a game of foreign policy chess, president-elect donald trump may have the next move. there are other players in this game, including members of congre congress. and on thursday, john mccain is set to hold hearings on the hacking. mr. trump is at odds with some members of his own party. matt? katie? back to you. >> john mccain and donald trump on this issue are -- >> not seeing eye-to-eye. >> definitely not. they won't be able to see much because of the fog, once you get down to washington, d.c.
