this is a live look at i-95 where crews are started pretreating the roads. >> the first alert weather team is making sure you're ready for the double-doze of weather. >> the cold air is starting to come in. we've seen the west winds gust up to 30 miles an hour during the afternoon. we were up to 54 -- degrees. we're down to 49 now. allen town is down to 43 degrees. why is the temperature dropping? this is where the air is coming from. it's 17 degrees in chicago right now. 3 in minneapolis. in the middle of the afternoon! and 1 below zero in bismarck, north dakota. middle of the afternoon temperature not windchill. the arctic air is hiding straights in our direction. it gets movdified a little bit. we won't get near zero, but the arctic air, once it's here, it will last through the weekend

and into monday. that's about as long as it's going to last. to give you an idea of what is going to happen in the next few hours. in philadelphia the temperature dropping to 35 degrees by 10:00 and feeling like 25. feeling 20 degrees colder just a few hours from now than it is now. that's how fast things are changing. we also have the potential snow to deal with a. >> we have the cold temperatures and as glenn pointed out, they stick around through the entire weekend. any presip that moves through it falls in the form of snow. we're taking the wide view of radar and satellite. we can show snow that is very well to the west. it's quickly heading our direction as we move through tomorrow. this is the future model for thursday night snow potential. take a look where we highlighted. we put it in motion and starts skirting across the country very quickly.

customers say the changes are too confusing. >> you took a closer look at the numbers here. >> reporter: we'ring that many businesses like this shop rite are passing along the tax increase to consumers. adding nothing more but it depends on the business owner with how much you'll be paying. angela dunbar watches and waits for her final total. trying to keep within budget and a sugary tax is not helping. the tax and her grocery bill in uncharted territory. to make up for it, she returns some items while keeping others. it's a back and forth being played out in stores across philadelphia with a 1.5 cent per ounce soda tax that took eskts sunday on new year's day. >> you have to be shop smart and think smart. it's not getting any cheaper. >> reporter: the tax on distributors are getting passed down to consumers. no surprise.

by how much depends on the business. the president of brown's super stores, which owns 11 shop rites said the cost is -- >> exactly 1.5 cents. we're not marking it up. >> reporter: you can see the soda tax amount under the original price and as a separate line on shop rite receipts. at old nelson on 20th and chestnut, the price increase break down is clearly posted for customers. a 20 ounce mountain due that was $1.19 as seen in this photo taken before the soda tax took effect will cost 30 cents more at $1.49. in old city, we found the owners at liberty chicken charged 25 cents more for a 20 cents soda but more than 50 cents for the 24 ounce. now due to customer feedback, shop rite will be changing the way it labels prices to include the total price not just the original price and the tax

increase. live from huntington park nbc 10 news. supporters say the new tax is a small price to pay because of where the money is going. we're degreeiigging deeper. what percentage of the tax is helping children get pre-k for free. following another tax increase that was supposed to race raise money for philadelphia school. the higher cigarette tax went into effect in 2014. at the time, the city projected it would raise $60 million. a new audit said it will only raise $50 million this year. we reached out to city leaders for comment. they told us a state law gau guarantees they get $58 million from the tax no matter what. facing an accused killer. jeremiah monell is charged with murdering his estranged wife in cumberland county. family members had a lot to say

about his fate. >> reporter: indeed. some family members cried. they prayed in the courtroom today. the man they once considered family they now hope never sees the light of day. >> i want him to get buried underneath that jail. >> reporter: facing 30 years to life in prison if convicted of murdering tara oh shea watson two years ago. he said he knows what he's accused of via closed-circuit tv. >> he hurt her for too long. >> reporter: investigators say monell stabbed his wife inside their township home in front of their 12-year-old son. the 4-year-old daughter was asleep. there was a state police search. his truck found abandoned and days of quiet before captured alive on monday across county lines.

>> we're happy he's caught. we're happy that he's in custody. >> reporter: tara's loved ones angry and heart broken that her children lose both parents. >> they're without their mother and father, but their support system is great. >> reporter: they shared with us the last photo taken of tara before her death. they want other victims of abuse to be protected under new jersey law. >> she went to the judge plenty of times to get herself and the kids out of the state. she wasn't leaving the kids behind. >> reporter: tara's cousin said even so he has faith in our justice system and prays it works for his family. >> if you believe in the higher above, which i do, she gets to watch from but doesn't get to be in the picture with them. she doesn't get to be with her kids while they get married. she doesn't get those pri privileges. why should he? >> reporter: jeremiah is being held without bail.

he'll be back in here court on monday morning for a formal detention hearing to determine how dangerous he is. his threat to the community, and risk of flight. for now live in cumberland county tonight. nbc 10 news. investigators are trying to figure out what caused two septa troll i ares to collide in west philadelphia. more than 40 people were hurt in this afternoon's crash along lancaster avenir 38th street. all the injuries were minor. both route 10 trolleys were heading west when the one rear ended the other. septa said the trolleys should have been running 10 minutes apart. duelling sides taking on health care this afternoon. president obama and vice president-elect mike pence are on capitol hill for dual meetings on the matter. what is at stake the future of the affordable care act. republicans are vowing to repeal it. meanwhile, the president is trying to rally democrats to fake their fight -- take their

year's day between bristol pike and state road. police fount the truck and issued a warrant for james hasher. he turned himself into police today. the charter school debate is haegt up in new jersey. groups opposing the governor's plan protested today. they gathered outside the courthouse in trenton to have their voices heard. they said governor christie's charter school policies are harmful to public school students across the state and the governor's plan diverts money and attention from the public school systems. >> we are not fostering across america a separate and unequal school system by which all children are not treated fairly and equally. >> the state responded to the protest saying the governor's plan had one goal in mind. of making sure that all students in the state get the education they deserve.

have. fake a look at the scene moments after a train derailed in new york city at the height of the morning's rush hour. >> authorities say the long island railroad train hit a bumping block at the end track. the train went up and over the track. more than a hundred people were hurt inside atlantic terminal in brooklyn. the most serious injury was a broken leg. the terminal where it happened is beneath a shopping mall in downtown brooklyn and across the street from the bar clay's center. the lehigh valley farm is smoldering this afternoon after a massive fire burned across the property. >> growers are cleaning up and salvaging any plant in this case can -- plants they can ahead of the busy spring season. >> reporter: typically during the winter lull, farm hands and growers will be harvesting bulbs getting lilies and tulips ready for the easter rush.

instead the folks are cleaning up from a devastating fire. >> it was like a raging inferno. >> more than the worst inside a planting and shipping warehouse. >> in there were millions, probably, of bulbs for easter that were growing. so those are all gone. >> reporter: nobody was injured and they recently cleaned out the entire stock of christmas flowers. they have three other farms to pick up the slack. >> fast on track to recover. we're looking heat back into the greenhouses to mitigate the loss of any other plants. we have an amazing team of people that pull together and work together. >> i'm looking for flowers. >> reporter: the farm's popular retail shop in allentown is still open. loyal customers say they want to see the farm rebuilt.

>> it's terrible for the greenhouse, obviously, but, you know, we're all here to help them rebuild and hopefully they'll get back to where they were before. >> it does hurt. we know that we're going to be better than we were before. and we know that god is going to see us through. >> reporter: in zionsville, nbc 10 news. today we know why former attorney general kathleen kane is appealing her conviction. kane's attorney filed a motion yesterday that challenges the use of a special prosecutor to investigate the leak of grand jury material. kane was sentenced to 10 to 23 months? ja -- in jail in august. she's out of prison during her appeal process. just as expected, today was a mild day out there. we saw the sunshine. temperatures moved up to the mid 50s in some areas. now we're on the down swing of the temperatures. still pretty nice out there. 48 in delaware.

change, but in the next 24 hours, we're going from mild conditions to colder and snow chances. here is a look. hour-by-hour by 7:30 temperatures even cooler. 4:30 and temperatures in the mid 30s. that's the best we can do. we didn't even talk 30s today. never saw them on the board. now we'll be peaking with those temperatures in the afternoon. the clouds building in throughout the day. into the night the snow moves in. it will push in quickly from the west. you see clipping parts and chester county by 10:30 in the evening and spreads across the map very quickly overnight. the overnight a.m. hours we'll see the bulk of the snow move think. it's not heavy snow. it's going to be light snow that moves by. it will hit most of our neighborhoods here. temperatures all below freezing. you see it spread across the map around 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. that continues to move off by 5:00 a.m. but lingering near the shore here. it from 5:00 to 7:00 a quick

passing, as well. throughout the morning commute, snow flakes falling. some on the roadways out there. of course, treated surfaces going to be better to drive on throughout your friday morning commute. but then that's going to move out. temperatures really not going to climb much. so we get into friday afternoon, and just like tomorrow still only seeing low mid 30s for high temperatures. the cold air goes nowhere even into your weekend. as a result that have passing system through your overnight thursday and friday morning. not looking at high accumulations. 1 to 2 inches. that's about it for accumulation for that thursday night/friday system. even as we go into the rest of your friday. you see it moves out and we dry out. that's a brief dry out for some zones. by saturday notice the difference in icons. for areas like philadelphia the suburbs in the lehigh valley not likely to see snow but the jersey shore and delaware and south jersey we may see more snow move through and possibly

it's all old people and children. >> investigators found surveillance cameras in the neighborhood. they're reviewing the tape to see if they can spot a car coming or going. weather played a role in the school bus accident in northeast philadelphia this morning. was in northeast philadelphia. this was the scene at academy around the 8:00 a.m. an suv hit the side of the bus carrying students from first philly charter school. no one was seriously hurt. the suv's driver said the bus pulled out in front of him. happening tonight parents in the upper perkiomen school distinct it includes raising taxes more than 8% to pay for a new building. renovating the existing building would cost more, they say.

camden county freeholder director is excited about the level of economic development happening in camden county. today he revealed that more than $3.5 billion in private equity is being invested in the county. nine miles of camden is filled with construction projects and unemployment is down 5% since 2012. small businesses in new jersey now have more help from the state. a bill signed today opens up assistance to get tax credits and the state will help the businesses bid on public projects and government contracts. it's not clear how much the program could cost the state. a veteran new jersey lawmak lawmaker is ending his political career. jim whelan will not seek re-election this year. he served three terms as mayor of atlantic city. he won a state assembly seat in 2005. he said he had a great run in

charleston church shooter dylann roof made his opening statement today at the start of his sentencing trial. he said, quote, there's nothing wrong with me psychologically. roof is acting as his own lawyer. he faces the death penalty for killing nine black church members in twi members in 2015. some of the family members took the stand. little league baseball coaches will be subject to background checks before they volunteer. little league international announced the regulation today. leagues are required to conduct checks of the nation-wide

against pennsylvania lottery headquarters. wanda shields is facing 53 charges. shields made dozens of obscene and violent calls over the past eight months after she failed to win the jackpot. a warning from police in south jersey. they want residents in atlantic county to take a good look at this guy. norfield police say he's a scam artist who poses as an appliance repairman. he uses sal shore appliance repair and my repairs in atlantic city. police say he's taking advantage of several residents. he was recently arrested for theft, fraud, and forgery. police want people to avoid doing any business with him. teens in trenton may have to wait until they're 21 to buy a pack of cigarettes. tomorrow city council will consider raising the minimum age to buy cigarettes, e cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products. right now the age limit is 19 in trenton. yep.

a lot of buzzing today inside tyler state park. crews taking down old trees throughout the park. many of the trees were damaged by a pesky beetle by the name of the emerald ash. it's not clear how long it will take. parts of tyler state park will be closed while the work is being done. the pennsylvania farm show in the pennsylvania farm show in harrisburg. organizers say it's the largest show of its kind in the nation with more than 10,000 exhibits and 6,000 animals that runs saturday through the 14th. for most female tennis players beating serena williams is a win they'll remember for the rest of their lives. madison beat williams in three of the quarter finals in new see land. her court side strategy that has everybody talking. >> she's hitting it nice. maybe, like --
