wilmington neighborhood. right now it's 6:00. brace for the freeze after temperatures in the 50s today. we're plummeting 30 degrees by tomorrow. >> wind is making it feel cold out there now. you can see in the flags in center city. >> after the cold get ready for. you're looking live at i-95 in wilmington as delldot crews are preparing the roads. we could get snow tomorrow night and again for the weekend. good evening. >> i'm jim rosenfield. >> we are bringing you live first alert team coverage. we are tracking snow. let's begin with the cold. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is breaking it down. >> everybody is going to get this cold. there's just no doubt about it. we've been telling you about it for more than a week, and it's already just starting to come in. it's 47 in philadelphia. we were 54 degrees a couple of hours ago.

allentown was 51. they're down 10 degrees already. with the wind coming in from the west. what is coming in from the west? look at this. 2 degrees in minneapolis. the middle of the afternoon in those places it's 2 below in bismarck. you saw the wind arrows. it's coming this way. your arctic air coming right at us. it won't get down to zero but it will get as cold or colder than it's been this season so far. it will last longer. all the way through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. then things start to change. as we look at the temperatures, through the evening look at the wind. 24 miles per hour. temperatures dropping to 34. feeling like 23. just this evening. wait until you see the rest of the forecast through the weekend. the other thing we're dealing with is snow. >> we're tracking the potential

to work friday morning. more detail about the snow potential and round two on saturday coming up. right now at 6:00. health care show down. president obama's is on a mission to save his law today on capitol hill. president-elect donald trump calls obamacare a disaster. a mess. practically useless. today his vp promising to repeal it on day one. >> the first order of business is to repeal and replace obamacare. and today president obama urged congressional democrats to preserve his health care law. democratic leaders warned repealing obamacare would throw the marketplace into chaos. meantime, republican leaders said today they'd move to repeal it immediately. house speaker paul ryan said the health care system is, quote, ruined. vice president-elect mike pence vowed to replace obamacare with a plan more market based and patient centered.

today nbc 10 spoke to a local people how they're feeling about the obamacare fight. some are terrified and others are hopeful. >> reporter: not everyone who has insurance through the marketplace because of obamacare wants the same thing. different families have different experiences. with health coverage and monthly bills at stake. andrea dutch loves what she does. a former lawyer and now she runs spot's. >> i don't want to have to give it up. >> the small business owner with type-i diabetes worries she might have to work for someone else who can give her health insurance if goes away. she said it allowed her to have affordable insurance she couldn't find before because of her condition. >> i called dozens of places. >> reporter: duetch supported hillary clinton hoping she would

fight to keep the law. now fears what will happen as the fight over its future plays out in washington. meanwhile, some watching it all happen are nervous for a different reason. >> i'm fine if they repeal it and we have nothing and we have to pay for it ourselves. like, i'm totally fine with that. people like us that voted for trump, it's the number one thing that we wished to change. >> reporter: she doesn't like being required to buy something and says it's too expensive. >> i just feel like the middle class and lower middle class, like, we're getting hammered. >> reporter: looking for some relief and hopeful. others worry -- >> it's terrifying. >> reporter: about what comes next. president-elect donald trump has listed covering people with preexisting conditions is something he wants to keep about the law. but andrea duetch said it gives

her a small sense of security. it could be difficult to keep expensive parts of the law like that without balancing it or seeing prices go up. new at 6:00. a man is facing sexual assault charges after he allegedly fondled a female college students as they slept in their dorms at the college of new jersey. john cannon was arrested on new year's eve. it's not the first time he's had a run in the law. he faced similar charges after an incident in october. investigators are trying to figure out what caused two septa trolleys to collide in west philadelphia. more than 40 people were hurt in this afternoon's crash along lang caster avenue. all the injuries were minor. both route 10 trolleys were heading west on lancaster when one rear ended the other. septa said the trolleys should have been running 10 minutes apart. sticker shock for philadelphia shoppers who buy sweetened drinks. so the-called soda tax that went

into effect on january 1st costs drink distributors 1.5 cents per ounce. how the tax drips down to you varies store by store. >> reporter: the soda tax is hitting shoppers in the pocketbook. some are already changing their buying habits. more aware of how much a 1. 5 cents per ounce tax can add up. >> it makes you think twice. you know, it's more money. >> reporter: the sugary beverage tax took effect sunday, new year's day and customers are feeling the impact. >> you have to be able to shop smart and think smart when you're shopping. it's not going to get any cheaper. >> reporter: the president of brown's super stores that owns 11 shop rites pointed out that certain beverages more than doubled in price overnight. take the cream soda, for example, where the soda tax is more expensive than the product itself going from $1.39 to $2 minu -- $2.91.

>> i'm concerned. >> reporter: the money generated from the tax will help fund the universal pre-k program. something ann supports amid sticker shock. >> you don't see the tax is there until the cash register and leave or take it? i don't know. >> reporter: nbc 10 news. the soda tax helped all the students at casa del carmen attend for free. nbc 10 was there for the first day of school this morning. the tax helped nearly 2,000 pre-k student goes to school this year. there are still spaces available at various centers across the city. a flower farm in lehigh county is vowing to rebuild of the after a devastating fire ripped through warehouses. a few buildings on the farm in zionsville went up in flames last night. it started near a shipping and planting warehouse. the farm owners say a number of,s for easter, including

lilies and tulips were destroyed. now despite this set back, the farm said they're glad nobody was injured and already cleaning up and getting ready for spring. >> it's on track to recover. we're getting heat back into the greenhouses to mitigate the loss of any other plants. we have an amazing team of people that pull together and work together. >> the farm's popular restore front in allentown remains under. the cause of the fire under investigation. nbc 10 learned more about what joe biden will do after the white house. one of his aids said biden plans to partner with the university of delaware on an economic policy and domestic policy initiative. just last night, mr. biden's microphone was on when he mentioned other plants. the vice president will also do foreign policy work at the

university of pennsylvania, as you heard there. the vp said he's sed setting up a blind trust to continue the cancer search he's spearheading. local law professors are fighting donald trump's nominee for attorney general. more than 1100 professors from drexel, temple, and penn wrote a letter to congress to oppose jeff sessions. the letter reads, we are convinced that jeff sessions will not fairly enforce our nation's laws. sessions needs the senate's approval to assume the job. the president-elect is hiring one of governor christie's former topped a v ad. bill steppan managed both of christie's campaigns. in the meantime two defendants in the bridge gate case think they may have found the key to

close. the company said it was a disappointing holiday shopping season. the stores are expected to close by the summer. also, new at 6:00. chicken fight in wilmington, delaware. a mom and pop shop has been serving up wings for 35 years. >> they're fighting to survive as their street gets spruced up. >> nbc 10 reporter explains how it could be more symbolic of changes getting cooked up in wilmington. >> reporter: andré said this is why he's been coming here for lunch. the place has been busy for 25 years. the new owner of the building has been developing lots of apartments they told the restaurant it's time for them to move on. they're going rehab the building and move a pricier italian restaurant into their spot. >> there are very few places

that are inexpensive to get a quick lunch. >> reporter: he said he has a 10-year lease. former owner said that was month-to-month. there's a scheduled hearing to sort it out with the buildings' owner. it will might be a glimpse into the future. a business-friendly mayor spent two decades building up the river front. >> downtown visions an organization that is literally cleaning up the area and pushing to build up the market street corridor. he said the area has great restaurants and fun theaters. many built to help more younger people to live, work, and play here. developers are building and more likely to jump in as people with expendable income jump in here. some spots like kennedys -- >> you can't take it away from us. >> reporter: they might be casualties of the developments. the customers hope they'll open up close by if they truly can't

stay here. >> they have good food and customer service. i hope they stick around. >> reporter: in wilmington nbc 10 news. ed rendell is brunching out. these are scenes from the broadway musical about 11 subway riders. he's on the list of coproducers. back to our weather. didn't exactly feel like winter today at the shore. nbc 10 at the atlantic city marina where the temperature got as high as 57 today. it could be snowing at the shore this weekend. glenn is tracking those changes in our first alert neighborhood forecast. >> yeah. could be snowing by tomorrow night and into early saturday at the shore. so changes are coming pretty quickly courtesy of the wind. coming out of the west and bringing in cold air. 47 in philadelphia.

now 41 in the lehigh valley. 51 a couple of hours ago. in delaware we've seen the temperature drop, as well. wilmington now 47 degrees. high today was 56. newark 45. middletown 46. farther to the south it's 48 in mil millton and lewis. say goodbye to those numbers for awhile. these wind gusts 20 to 30 miles per hour. still howling out of the west. bringing in some of that arctic air that you've seen, at least you're not there to suffer through it in the upper midwest to the great lakes where temperatures, in some cases, are below zero in the middle of the afternoon. it won't get that cold here but it's the cold et. cetera air of the season and will last for several days, certainly through the weekend. it will be a bitter cold weekend out there for all of us. temperature trend 54 for the

high today. 35 for the high tomorrow. and then if anything it goes down as we head through the weekend. radar and satellite showing things pretty clear now. we'll look back to the west. this is the area of snow just racing eastward across the middle of the country, and believe it or not, it's going to get here before midnight tomorrow night. there's tomorrow. could even start off a little sunshine. but look at these temperatures in the afternoon. not even into to freezing. tomorrow evening here comes some of the snow. could start to stick on untreated surfaces pretty quickly. by 6:00, 7:00, 88:00 a.m. on friday it's out of here. that's helpful.:00 a.m. on friday it's out of here. that's helpful. the early part of the friday morning rush has the best chance of seeing that snow, as you can see, in new jersey and jersey shore seeing most significant. the second system on saturday is
