truck brining a road in springfield township, montgomery county. so how much and when? we get answers from first alert meteorologist bill henley. >> i have no doubt that the crews will keep up with the light snow heading in this evening. here is your time looip. during the day, cold and cloudy and dry through the afternoon. it is this evening when we start to see the first light snow arriving between 7:00 and 9:00. just a few neighborhoods during that time. and then more widespread snow later in the evening and into early tomorrow morning. overnight, expect accumulations of one to two inches. maybe a couple of neighborhoods getting more than two but i'm not expecting more than that. and by first thing tomorrow morning before the rush gets underway, the snow will move off shore, off the jersey shore and out to sea and we'll be done with it. right now plenty of clouds. the radar is picking up what looks like snow and that is snow

up above the ground. by the time it reaches the ground, it is falling into some very dry air so this first little bit of snow that is trying to come out of the clouds is not even getting close to the ground. so that is not the snow we're going to get this evening. there it is. moving through kentucky, and into the ohio valley, west virginia and even into portions of virginia. so it has a ways to go before it gets here. plenty of planning time. but it is not the sunny day we had yesterday by a long shot when we saw temperatures in the 50s. right now it is 30 degrees in philadelphia. the wind is out of the west at 12 miles per hour. the system will be coming in from the west. the winds won't be as strong for the suburbs and new jersey as what we saw yesterday and not as warm with the clouds and upper knowledge at 35 degrees with mostly cloudy skies for philadelphia and the upper 30s in delaware. that is a little bit warm for snow but these numbers are falling before the snow starts to move in this evening. i'll take you through hour by hour with the future-cast and we'll look at how much you can expect in your neighborhood when i come back. tracy. >> bill, thanks.

and remember, you can download the nbc 10 app to get updates on the winter weather and get alerts for your neighborhood forecast sent right to your phone. the prosecutor's office is investigating the sudden death of an 8-year-old girl on new year's eve. the child lived in stratford township. pamela osborne is live at the prosecutor's office in camden with the latest. what do we know about this. >> i've been making phone calls to see what information i'm able to come up with. police not taking any questions at this time. they referred me to the camden county prosecutor's office and the only thing the office is saying this morning is that no charges have been filed in the death of 8-year-old sailer rider. our sources confirm she is the daughter of a stratford police officer. investigators say sailer died suddenly in her home on new year's eve. what we do know is that a 911 call was placed on saturday before 2:00 in the afternoon. we requested that call from investigators and we received it

this morning. what you're about to hear is the brother of that 8-year-old talking to a 911 operator about his sister who was found unresponsive upstairs in the family home. >> how old is your niece? >> she's 8 years old. >> she's 8? okay. and she's -- listen to me. listen to my questions. she's unconscious? >> i don't know exactly. my mom just went upstairs and found her and she told me to call 911. >> reporter: and investigators have not said how the 8-year-old died or if her death was in any way suspicious. we're going to continue to keep asking questions on this. but for now, reporting live in camden county, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. happening now, the man at the center of the clergy sexual abuse scandal is back in court. monsignor lynn wants to avoid a retrial on charges that he covered up abuse cases. lynn served 33 months in prison before he was released in

august. after his 2012 conviction for covering up clergy sexual abuse of children was overturned. a new trial is scheduled for may. police are looking for a gunman in a deadly shooting in strawberry mansion. a man was killed before 1:30 this morning at west oakdale and north myrtlewood streets. police found two spent shell casings from two different guns. they are looking for a car that drove away from the scene and checking surveillance cameras in the area. philadelphia police are also looking for the gunman who fired shots in the fair hill neighborhood. a bullet struck a man in the head while he sat on a front porch around 9:00 last night on east indiana avenue. he was rushed to the hospital where he is in critical condition right now. investigators found 16 shell casings from two weapons from a park across the street. police do not believe the victim was the intended target. investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that ripped through a home in frank ford. flames broke out just after midnight. firefighters think the fire started in the basement and then

spread through the upper floors. no one was hurt. we're seeing new video that police hope can help them catch a man suspected of assaulting a woman. take a look. investigators say the man in this video assaulted a 28-year-old woman in david's restaurant on race street in center city. if you recognize the suspect, call police. more new video, this clip shows a man police say broke into a salon. the man busted into the business on north fifth street between 7:30 on the evening of december 27th, and 10:40 a.m. on december 28th. they say he ransacked the business and took money from the safe. if you know anything that could help police, call 911. the philadelphia district attorney's office responded this morning to criticism from the philadelphia fraternal order of police for not pressing charges against a teenage girl allegedly involved in a fight with an officer. video of the incident went viral this week. police say the girl slapped the

officer in the face in southwest philadelphia. the officer threw the teen to the ground and punched her. the department placed the officer on administrative duty. after the d.a. decided against charging the teen. the f.o.p. president sent out this letter. he said, the d.a. is looking the other way and tweeted, quote, remember this at election time. well a spokesperson for the d.a. office released a statement reading in part, district attorney williams will never apologize for relying on high investigative and prosecutorial standards before deciding to take away someone's freedom and it is stunning that anyone, much less the member of law enforcement would ever believe anything else. time to check the roads on this thursday morning. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has you covered. what are you seeing? >> well two things. starting off with minor delays on 95. this is the southbound side around the bridge, around route 322, seeing slowdowns because

there is construction up ahead. so we're losing lanes up ahead on the southbound side so maybe you are moving toward the bridge and need to get to delaware. a delay. and in abbington and rock ledge and watch for that. and a disabled vehicle on city avenue near presidential boulevard and has been there an hour or so now so a little bit of a slowdown by the scene there. new jersey roads are fine for the most part but in cherry hill township there is a water main break. this happened a few hours ago so clean-up is affecting the route 38 ramp to cuss burt boulevard so watch for that but in new jersey, the rest of the roads are doing fine. 295 and the turnpike and the 42 are all clear in both directions. back to you. >> thanks. happening now, mourners have gathered to remember a pennsylvania tate trooper killed in the line of duty. the funeral began a little while ago in altoona, central pennsylvania. a live look outside right now. a gunman shot the trooper last week while he was responding to a domestic incident at a home in

huntington county. fellow troopers tracked the suspect to a mobile home after he killed him after he made threats and refused to obey orders. the trooper was just married in june. now out of philadelphia nice town neighborhood, over a fire at an apartment building at 21st and tioga. we're told people have been evacuated from the building. and the fire has been placed under control. we're working to find out if anybody was hurt. taye with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app and we'll have updates on the breaking news. a judge increased bail to $100,000 to keep a bucks county man in jail now that he is charged with groping girls in college dorms in mercer county and it stretches from our area all the way to wyoming. john cannon is accused of break into determines at several colleges and fondling students while they slept.

investigators say cannon submitted dna when he was in a pretrial program for another arrest for alleged break-ins at nearby rider university and that is when investigators linked him to a sorority break-in and exposure in wyoming. >> i'm shocked. that these things that happen on campus. >> it does kind of scare me that it could happen to me or any of my friends as well. >> if cannon makes bail, he is barred from being on any college campus. well, we just found out t national transportation safety board will see what caused two sets of trolleys to collide yesterday. more than 40 people were hurt near 38th street yesterday afternoon. all of the injuries were minor. both route 10 trolleys were heading west on lancaster when one rear-ended the other. passengers described the scary moments. >> you want to slam on the brakes yourself and before we knew it, we smashed.

testimony from director of national intelligence james clapper and others. the hearing follows cia conclusions that the russian government hacked computers in order to influence the presidential election. intelligence experts gave president obama the final report that he asked for on the alleged hacking this morning. tomorrow intelligence experts will brief president-elect donald trump on the matter. mr. trump continues to question whether the intelligence community really has hard evidence against russia. now to the transition to president-elect donald trump. mr. trump is urging republicans and democrats to get together and come up with a replacement for obamacare. in a series of tweets, the president-elect said it is time to, quote, come up with a health care plan that really works. much less expensive and far better. and an aide who was fired by chris christie will join the trump administration. he tapped bill steppy an to be his director. he was fired during the fallout from the bridge-gate scandal.

he was not charged but during the trial the government star witness testified that he knew about the george washington bridge lane closure plan. a member of the u.s. senate this morning unveiled the official inauguration tickets. the chairman of the committee showed off an enlarged version of the ticket. the actual tickets are obviously a little smaller. actually they are a smaller than a postcard. government is issuing 200,000 tickets for the ceremony on january 20th. president obama has highlighted the progress the government has made over his eight year term. the letter is addressed to all americans and it begins with the problems the administration faced when taking office. and how his cabinet took on those problems. it starts with the financial crisis and the struggling economy, and it goes on to highlight the wars in iraq and afghanistan and challenging from health care to climate change. the president thanks the american people for helping his administration meet those challenges and cites job creation, a diminished

dependence on foreign oil and a rising graduation rate and lower poverty numbers. today each members of the cabinet will release their own exit memo on the progress made by their agencies. citizen bank will donate $25,000 to the african-american museum in philadelphia to help celebrate the life of dr. martin luther king jr. this is the 11:00 year of the partnership and this is video from last year. the money will pay for four days of events and special activities leading up to martin luther king day on january 16th, along with free and discounted admission tickets. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> heading out right now, it is cold and cloudy. cold enough to make snow. and they're at it. in the poconos it is in the teens and camelback. that is the only snow you'll see during the day. this evening a different story. even the mountains will get some snow out of this system coming our way but not a lot. i'm only looking for an inch or

two in the poconos but that is true for much of the area. but during the afternoon, dry but cloudy afternoon with temperatures above freezing, but just barely. they come back down tonight and we'll be tracking light accumulating snow in the area that will continue into early tomorrow morning. right now watching the tea temperatures and clouds increase. 39 in philadelphia. and 28 in the lehigh valley. and south jersey, limited sunshine getting through the clouds but not having a big impact on the temperatures. look at woodstown, piles grove, mt. laurel, all below freezing this morning. lumberton at 31 degrees. and low 20s in princeton and now 29. 30 degrees in robbinsville. will peak above freezing this afternoon and then the teams start to come back -- the temperatures come back down. right now the clouds are increasing. you could see the little bit of snow that is trying to develop but is falling into very dry air so not reaching the ground. but it is a different story in virginia and beyond.

this is the snow that is going to be arriving this evening. it is a large area of light snowfall. and we'll see the first snowflake during the early evening hours. after a cloudy afternoon, 6:30 this evening, light snow pushing into delaware and new castle county, salem county and into philadelphia and more widespread accumulating snow by late in the evening. that is 11:00 tonight. it looks pretty impressive right there. though that is light snow. it is not even coming down in cape may at that hour. that changes overnight as this system will be shifting. that is 2:00 in the morning, still light snow nor wilmington and philadelphia and trenton and quickly moving out to sea. long gone by 7:00. well before the morning commute starts. so how much to expect? well the snow potential, not a lot by 9:00. could see an inch on the ground by that hour in wilmington. and in the late evening hours and to midnight, about an inch into middle school and vor hees

and pottstown and then it increases into the early morning hours, 2:00 and just about done, seeing more in parts of new jersey, up to three inches in vorhees but then no more snow after that and drying out and getting colder for the weekend. so your ten day on 10, 35 today. dry during the day and light snow this evening and early tomorrow morning and sunshine breaking through tomorrow afternoon. but don't expect sunshine to warm things up over the weekend. in fact, the temperatures go the other way. especially cold on sunday when it is windy too, with temperatures in the 20s. the warm-up comes next week ahead of rain on wednesday and thursday and it is just rain with temperatures up to 50 degrees on wednesday afternoon. just 46 degrees with the showers coming to an end on thursday. >> well with the snow, the timing couldn't be better. everybody get home and settle in and the road crews do what they need to do and then you have a dusting. >> most people are off the road. so the 180 trucks that we've

cancer deaths have dropped over the past quarter century and a new report from the american cancer society shows cancer deaths have fallen 25% since peaking in 1991. experts credit lower smoking rates and advances in early detection and treatment for the drop. the cancer is still the second leading cause of death in the u.s., just behind heart disease. federal officials released new guidelines on introducing foods containing peanuts to children in order to reduce allergy risks. researchers say foods like peanut butter could be introduced to children at high risk for allergies as early as four to six months of age. it should be done in consultation with an allergy specialist and usually in a specialist's office and it is important to know we are not talking about actual peanuts, just peanut butter. peanuts could be a choking hazard. if you take medication, you want to hear about this new study linked some heart burn drugs to an increased risk in intestinal bacteria.

scottish researchers found patients taking the medications were nearly two to four times more likely to develop serious infections than nonusers. reducing acid in the stomach may allow bacteria to grow more easily. and how close you live to busy traffic could impact your risk of dementia. a study found people living within about 165 feet of a major road are 7% more likely to develop dementia than those living further away. in fact, researchers estimate up to one in ten dementia cases among people from busy areas are linked to traffic exposure. well, we've been talking about it all morning, get ready for the snow. here is a live look at the radar. snow is marching across the country. meteorologist bill henley will let us know when the snow will arrive in our area and how much you could get where you live. and the restaurant that turned into a drive-thru. the close call for diners all caught on camera. ♪

he was gunned down last week while responding to a domestic disturbance. the manhunt continued for a man who killed 30 people in istanbul. matt bradley has an update. >> the turkish authorities are to be believed there could be dmn arrest shortly. the deputy prime minister said they believe the killer is weaker. that is a prom dominantly muslim group in china. they told turkish television it is possible he escaped abroad, he is likely in turkey. they have identified a few locations where the suspect could be hiding. they also believe he acted mostly alone. mean while, his turkey investigates the first major terror attack of 2017, parisians are committing a two-year-old strike against charlie hebdo. they are holding ceremonies to mark a shooting that killed a dozen people at the newspaper.

charlie hebdo has published a satirical cover in the jeering tone celebrating the end of 2016 and the terror attacks that so stained this past year. back to you. more terror in turkey now. a car bomb killed two people near a courthouse in the western part of the country. the attack injured five others. the blast went off near a police check point killing a police officer and a court employee. the attacker shot at other police officers and were killed in the gun battle. the tushish officials said it wasn't for the police check point, there would have been more serious attacks at the courthouse. federal investigators are on the scene investigating what caused this long island railroad train to derail. it hit a bumping block at the end of the track and smashed into a work area yesterday morning. officials say the most serious injury appeared to be a broken leg. the national transportation safety board said the trains recorders have been recovered and the engineer has undergone

drug testing. the results have not yet returned from those tests. a close call for customers when an suv crashed through a michigan restaurant. look at this. it just missed people sitting at a booth. police say a woman was driving with his mother and children when she accidentally hit the building. investigators think she may have mistaken the gas for the brake. amazingly, no one was hurt. happening now, jurors have returned for a second day of testimony in the sentencing phase of dillon roof's trial. people who lost loved ones talked about the victims. roof is representing himself not expected to call any witnesses. he told the jury in his opening statement that there is nothing wrong with him psychologically. prosecutors are asking the jury to sentence roof to death for killing nine people at the ame church in june of 2015. a viral video out of chicago could lead to hate crime charges. and we do want to warn you, you might find this disturbing.

chorus. thank you both for being here. so tell us about this chorus. >> so first of all, the chorus is an idea that comes out of the philly pops wanting to be very connected. and to share the music-making that we do. so it is a big one. members for the -- 150 members for the festival chorus at verizon hall and it is a great experience and we think it enhances the show while allowing some of the folks that might normally attend the concert to actually perform in it. >> that sounds pretty sweet. so tell us about your experience, jim. what is it like and what is the time commitment like. >> i actually just joined the group. i auditions in september. >> okay. >> i have been singing in chorus groups my entire life but this is the first time in the festival chorus. and it is a great experience. so the christmas concert we just completed was the first concert i sang with the group. we made beautiful music.

had a great time. michael, the conductor, does a good job of keeping all of the forces together and even tells a few corny christmas jokes. i'm a music teacher so i used a few of them in my concert as well. >> so you love the experience. >> i love the group. it is a great experience, yeah. and the people in the group, it is a good community. they are friendly. and the time commitment isn't really all that great. we start rehearsal coming tuesday for the concert at the end of the february and then once the concert is over, we're done until the next season picks up. >> and tell us how many people come out for the audition. do you have a shot. it is like "the voice" but local. >> we have 300 people come out for a series of auditions that we do. but i think everybody is a good singer has a good shot to get into the chorus. and the next show coming up is the broadway show which is one of the more popular shows that we do. and i think the choral members are excited about that repertoire.

very low 30s. so not much of a warm-up and temperatures falling this evening just as the snow reaches into the area. radar and satellite shows a lot of clouds. very little sunshine. and it is trying to snow in our area. but that snow is not reaching the ground. the different story in virginia. here is the leading edge. that is the verying that will be coming into during the early evening hours and then we'll get this during the later evening and early morning hours. this is light snowfall and it is going to be a pretty quick mover, too. coming through during the evening, when most people are at home. during the day today, a lot of clouds. at 7:00 this evening, here comes the first snow into wilmington and philadelphia getting light snow possibly at 7:00 and then that increases in it scope into the suburbs and south jersey as well. this is the area that will first get a snowfall. you kind of remember this area right in here. that is 9:00. by 11:00 this evening, when they are updating you on the system coming through, it is more

widespread snowfall reaching into the poconos past the lehigh valley and even into the jersey shore, toms river 31 degrees with snow falling and snow reaching into central and portions of southern delaware. cape may may be drive but that is a temporary effect. by early tomorrow morning, the snow stretches to cape may and at 3:00 in the morning it tapers off in the lehigh valley and the suburbs and look at what happens between 3:00 and 4:00 this morning. that is 3:00. it virtually disappears in an hours time and pushes off shore. toms's river and atlantic citying the last snowflake before it moves off shore. we won't see a lot. by 1:00, one inch for philadelphia and vorhees and two inches on the ground in westchester and wilmington. and then as we get more snowfall, remember the areas getting the first snow right into here. this is where we'll see the greatest amount and there is no big snow coming here. two inches for westchester or wilmington and maybe more,

possibly up to three for vorhees. but many neighborhoods wind up with just an inch of snow and then it is out of here. but this weekend, there is one more chance that parts of the area will see a bit of snow. this is saturday morning, another system, this one a storm, off shore is going to get very close to the coast. maybe even seeing some very light snow in extreme southern delaware. barely reaching toward the shore. in fact, most likely it will stay off shore. that is noontime on saturday. as we go into the afternoon, that falls farther away. but it will be cold and that cold will stay with us and get even colder on sunday. so saturday we'll see some breaks of sunshine in philadelphia, the suburbs in lehigh valley. a slightest chance from the second storm off shore, giving us maybe a little light snow. or possibly just a few flurries in new jersey and the jersey shore and delaware. that most likely stays way to the south or way off shore. and then sunday we get some sunshine. but the temperatures are aftnoo

temperatures so the feels-like temperatures sunday morning at 7:00, looking at single-digits for philadelphia, swedesville, vorhees and 4 degrees the feels-like temperature in allentown and down to 9 degrees for and 11 degrees in avalon. so very cold air. it looks like the coldest is here on sunday into monday. and then the temperature trend after a very cold weekend is finally moving up on tuesday and the ten-day on 10 takes it even higher next wednesday. that will come with a chance of some rain for wednesday. we'll ease out of the cold and that mild, though not as warm as wednesday, still not as bad for thursday. and friday is drying out and that is typical for this time year. high temperatures in the low to mid-40s for friday and saturday. so a bump in the road with snow coming this evening and we'll go on early tomorrow. >> going on at 4:00 a.m. >> and most it will be done by
