the darker blues indicate heavier type snow that is capable of accumulating. by 1:00 in the morning we may be at the peak of this with temperatures in the 20s. any untreated surfaces will be snow covered. watch what happens by 3:00 a.m., it's already ending to the north and west. by 5:00 a.m., the only snow left is right in new jersey and well east of the delaware river for the most part. by 7:00, it's long gone. but it's plenty cold. so any snow that falls is still going to be on the ground when you get up and get out in the morning. so the light snow arrives between 7:00 and 9:00. the peak of the snow between 11:00 and 3:00 a.m. and then as we go into the overnight hours. we're talking about an average of about two inches of snow for the friday morning rush, though, dry. on any treated roads, the

amounts of snow generally averaging around two inches, a little bit less to the north and the south. there's also a chance of snow for parts of the area on saturday. we'll talk about that storm, too a little bit later. crews say they're ready to role when the first flakes start falling. they were pretreating the roads early this afternoon. that's where nbc randy gyllenhaal is live. >> this is the most snow of the season for most of the road crews. >> reporter: in the past hour or so, penn dot called in the reinforcement. contractors will be helping out, making a total of 300 trucks salting the roads into the overnight hours. it's not going to be the biggest storm of the system, but it's a good reminder for folks at home to start the snow and ice checklist. ahead of the first real taste of winter, penn dot crews spent the past 24 hours brining local

roads. when the first flakes start falling they'll issue a callout of 180 state trucks and 130 contractors on major state roads. local contractors getting ready to hit parking lots and sidewalks. >> commercial properties first. >> reporter: with we found jay ribson gearing up on supplies. he said so far the winter has been mild, but that's about to change. >> first real one of the season. hopefully it's steady like this every week. nothing too big but nothing too small. >> reporter: the coming winter blast won't be a big one. it's a good reminder to get ready for the season ahead. which means winterizing your car. mechanics at plymouth auto and tire are seeing customers left and right. >> check your tires, make sure you have the right pressure, tread, wiper blades. >> reporter: the wipers are crucial when it starts snowing. >> where it's torn at the ends, that's not going to clean you'll

get streaking. the best thing you want is visibility. >> reporter: for most people, this will be the first time in months driving in snowy conditions. >> you can control what you're doing. you want to drive slow, stay to the right if it's really bad. >> reporter: these are the brine tanks they've been filling up the trucks with. they say most of the major roads have been brined already. again, they sbraut brought in reinforcements so the roads could get tricky going into the overnight hours. penn dot says it's a good thing the snow is coming after the evening rush and possibly before the morning rush as well. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. philadelphia crews gearing up, getting set to hit the roads, the city street department has been busy filling trucks at the salt yard. the major roads are already brined. the department begins to start salting at 7:00 tonight.

leaders are reminding everyone to take it slow out there. >> we still want motorists to take their time. if they see the salt trucks out there, give themselves plenty of distance. just take the time and be careful driving. >> philadelphia streets department has 50,000 tons of salt on hand to tackle whatever may come our way this winter. the snow isn't the only weather threat over the next couple of days. we are bracing for brutal cold. nbc 10 were in delaware today where people are bundled up. philadelphia is issuing a code blue emergency. as are montgomery and bucks and burlington counties. a code blue emergency is issued when conditions could be dangerous for those outside for long periods of time. service and resources are amped up to get people out of the cold. the jersey show could see two rounds of snow by the end of the week.

their basements are damaged watn flowing. neighbors say the water is three feet high in their basement. others have water coming in from their back yard. they're trying to get everything out of their basement. the water department says they have crews are working to make sure the water is shut off completely. we'll be out here talking to neighbors, we'll see you back here for a live report at 5:00. reporting live, i'm rosemary connors. 20 minutes of non-stop news continued with intruders posing as utility workers. three men told an 87-year-old man they worked for ecw. we're live near the home. this serves as a warning? >> reporter: people should listen. four or five men came to the door and said there was gas

leak. the elderly victim tried to do the right thing. that's when the attackers barged in. >> showed a badge. pmy uncle cracked the door and said i'm going to crack the door, they pushed in the door. >> reporter: four to five men burst into this home, throw ing the 87-year-old man on the couch. >> they told him if he didn't give them money they were going to beat him up. but that's all he said. >> reporter: the attackers got away with $1,200. family members say the victim is shaken but not physically injured. >> he is elderly, he's 87. he doesn't walk that great. >> reporter: detectives interviewed the victim. the attackers are between 20-30 years old. some wore a hood. neighbors say they did not hear a thing but believe the victim was targeted. >> he shouldn't be here by himself at all. >> reporter: the man's family wants him to move. but after living here for more than three decades they say he doesn't want to go anywhere.

we're told that the victim spent 40 years as a teacher. he retired from frankfurt high school. his family tells us he's been a victim in a similar incident before with people posing to work for the water department. now i called pgw. i'm going to tell you what they say you should look for to make sure the technician that comes to your door is legit. that story is coming up at 5:30. reporting live in kensington. nbc 10 news. with just 15 days until president elect donald trump takes office, preparations for the inauguration are coming together. today congress unveiled the tickets for the ceremony. next week, those tickets will be released to members of congress. there are nearly 250,000 color coded tickets in all. they contain multiple security features to protect against counterfeiting. each member of congress will distribute their share of tickets for their constituents on inauguration day.

organizers in philadelphia are preparing for a march on washington on dr. martin luther king day encouraging people in our area to make the trip just days before president elect trump is sworn in. elected officials representatives from groups including the naacp, and pastors gathered this morning in philadelphia to perwade others to join them. they're looking to send a message to the president elect. >> it's focus on protecting those things around voter id, voter registration, protecting our healthcare first and foremost. protecting education for our children. protecting medicare, all those safety nets we've worked so hard for. >> organizers are planning for buses to take participants from philadelphia to washington, d.c. the marching band at a historically black college will perform at this month's inauguration. the college made the announcement today. the decision to allow the band to perform, follows several days of debates.

critics say it amounts to support for president elect trump after his controversial statements about the black community during the campaign. high level intelligence officials are headed to new york tomorrow. they will be briefing president elect trump on their classified findings about allegations that russia interfered in the election by hacking e-mails. president obama received those findings today. this morning, the director of national intelligence testified before the senate saying that russia undoubtedly interfered in the election. james clapper didn't say whether russia's actions were aimed at helping dr helping donald trump win. he stopped short of calling it an act of war. the camden county prosecutor's office is investigating the death of an 8-year-old girl on new year's eve. investigators say sarah rider died in her home. our sources confirm she's the daughter of a stratford police officer. the camden county prosecutor's office will say no charges have been filed. nbc 10 has obtained a 911 call

the girl's brother made after finding her unresponsivunrespon >> how old is your niece? >> my baby sister, eight years old. >> she's eight. listen to me. listen to my question. she's unconscious? >> i don't know exactly. my mom just went upstairs and found her and she told me to call 911. >> investigators haven't said how the 8-year-old died or if there was anything suspicious. the archdiocese official accused of covering up pedophile priests will be back in a philadelphia courtroom next week. this is new video. he sat before a judge while defense attorneys and prosecutors argued whether his case should be dismissed. an appeals course overturned lynn's landmark conviction. the district attorney's office is not dropping charges and is planning for a new trial. during next week's hearing a detective is expected to testify about inconsistent statements.

yesterday's trolley crash, on lancaster avenue. the ntsb said today it is sending a team to philadelphia to investigate. septa said the trolleys should have been running ten minutes apart. we have a new sketch now of a man who has been exposing himself to teenage girls and women in burlington county. police say he struck in medford and was wearing nothing but sneakers. two teenage girls says the man changed him from a park and police in medford say a man fitting a similar description encountered two women on two different occasions. it's believed he drives an older model jeep patriot. if you see him, call police. mourners are remembering a state trooper shot and killed in central pennsylvania. hundreds paid their respects to trooper landon weaver at his funeral in altoona today.

he was 23 years old and it just married his high school sweetheart. he was shot and killed last friday while responding to a domestic incident outside altoona. police say the gunman was a 32-year-old jason robeson. fellow troopers later killed robeson after he refused to obey orders. accused inappropriate contact with a 103-year-old woman. he was held after trial. he is charged with three counts of indecent assault. police say employees reported seeing him touch the woman's chest area multiple times at this nursing home in wayne. a big gift for local veterans in need. the non-profit david's drive donated racks and racks of clothing to the va medical center. the organization bought the clothes from the coatsville army and navy school which is closing its doors after 90 years in

business. the items will be given to hospitalized and homeless veterans. k mart is closing four of its stores in new jersey, and two of them are in our area. sky first 10 was over the store in clemmerton. it is part of k mart's plan to downsize across the country. and it comes as macy's announces plans to close dozens of stores following a disappointing holiday shopping. four stores in our area will be affected. the plymouth meeting mall, the retailer is also shutting down the stars at the morris town mall and one at the voorhies town center. west chester university has a new president, but he's not new to the school. he has been tapped for the jaob. he began teaching there in 1983. john shapiro is preparing to

take over as pennsylvania's top law enforcement officer. he announced today he'll be stepping down as chairman of the montgomery county board of commissioners on the 16th of this month. in his new role as attorney general, he will inherit the office kathleen cain held until her conviction on perjury and obstruction charges. winter weather headed in our direction. >> it's moving in from the west and this morning, it hit ohio leaving commuters there with a rough ride to work. conditions on the roads were just downright treacherous. here in our area, the jersey show could see a one two punch of snow by week's end. road crews were loading up the salt across the reegion today. ted greenburg is live for us. >> the crews have been busy hours ahead of the snow because they're not taking any chances. >> reporter: they really are not, jackie and jim, good evening. many of these roads have already been pretreated with brine solution.

no problems for the evening trip home. the morning commute could be a little slick. as the snow moves closer, the available stock of ice melt is quickly disappearing. >> i had about four pallets this morning when i opened. i down to less a pallet of each. >> reporter: atlantic county road crews constantly refilling their trucks with brine solution. the job of pretreating roads in its second straight day, ahead of the region's first measurable snowfall of the season. >> when the snow starts to fall, it won't bind to the road and it will start to melt. that gives a head start. >> reporter: snow plows ready to roll in wildwood. >> we try to get people to get their cars off the street and we can clean curb to curb. >> we had a great fall. time for snow.

tonight and maybe tonight will be the only snow we'll be seeing. 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. a limited time. everything's moving fast. we'll average a couple of inches. could get locally five inches in chester, montgomery, bucks the upper portions of those counties. and by 7:00 a.m., it's not going to be snowing anymore but the snow that falls tonight is not going anywhere. it's not going to be windy or warm. the sun's not out yet at 7:00 a.m. especially the sidewalk and driveways and other untreated surfaces are going to be slippery. got to get rid of the snow. because nature's not going to do it for a while. there's what we're seeing on the radar, most of this is not reaching the ground. this stuff is. western pennsylvania, virginia and ohio. it's a solid area and moving

this way and no doubt it will snow. of course, it's going to cool down overnight tonight and when the snow starts, the temperature will get knocked down. so the atmosphere overall is plenty cold enough for snow. throughout much of the area. you can see as we go through the evening, the gradual increase of the snow from west to east, by 11:00 tonight, it's snowing in most of the area as we go through the middle of the night, that's the peak of this. we're not talking about tremendous amounts of snow. but we've only had .33 of an inch the whole season. we'll get more than that on the one night. you can see the temperatures way below the freezing mark, all through the day tomorrow. so it's going to be kind of difficult early. the temperatures not going anywhere, as you can see,

7:00 a.m. philadelphia it's border line. the rest of the area is cold enough for the snow to stick. look at 5:00 a.m. pa suburbs, lehigh valley. the rest of the snow at 5:00, and 7:00 it's just cloudy. how much snow? generally speaking a couple of inches on average. a little bit less to the south. a little bit less up to the north as well. then we have to look for saturday. this is a bigger system. this is an actual storm. it will be on the northern edge of it. right now the computer models are varying on this. generally speaking, the delaware beaches, jersey shore have the best chance of seeing some snow with that. and we're going to be seeing bitter cold along with that, too, especially on sunday morning when it will feel like it's near zero. >> glenn, we know you'll keep us informed. also count on nbc 10 to get you

i want to tell you about a night that seemed to be going horribly wrong for one woman. it turned out to be one she won't soon forget. >> she was on her way to a christmas celebration with her boyfriend in west virginia when police pulled them over. dash cam video shows her boyfriend with his hands up in the air and forfeiofficers surrg him. while searching them they ask what's in his pocket. he takes out a ring and pops the question. he staged the whole thing with police. the lucky lady had no idea the officers agreed to be part of the proposal. >> i got a lot of respect for this guy and i knew if i got them on board, she would not see it coming. >> i clearly couldn't even speak words. i just stood there like, i was so shocked and so excited. >> the couple's family also got to be part of the special moment as they washed frtched from a d. >> no one was arrested. >> a different way to go about it. >> nice story, yeah jasn.

wilmington. drivers can expect to see del dot trucks prepete trooretreati snow. >> the timing will be different depending on where you live. meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the latest. >> it's going to start in the western areas, chester county, for example, around 7:00, burkes county. it will end around 5:00 and end last at the shores. 5:00 a.m. it may still be snowing at the jersey show. the average amounts around two inches. some places especially in some of the higher elevations north and west of philly about three. and even though the snow is going to be over by 7:00 a.m., just remember, the snow that fell is still going to be there unless you get rid of it on your sidewalk and driveways and any other untreated surfaces. so it will be slippery walking, that's for sure.

you can see some of the moisture increasing a little bit, but the atmosphere is not totally sat saturated yet. it is here. this area is all snow reaching the ground. it's moving very fast. once it comes in it will help knock the temperatures down. even though it's 34 in philadelphia and in vineland, 35 in dover now above freezing, the temperature will drop this evening. when the snow starts, it will drop even more. so the snow timeline, generally, 7:00 to 9:00. light snow arriving from the west. the peak of the storm, a lot of you will be sleeping, you'll wake up and there will be snow on the ground averaging around two inches. for the morning rush it will not be snowing. then we take a look at the cold. tomorrow morning, the amounts, generally averaging around two. this computer model has zero in

allentown and the poconos. so we'll be seaieing it across e middle of our area. 7:00 a.m., everyone is dry even at the jersey shore. i'm lauren mayk. crews are preparing for how the weather could affect the roads. that means have trucks ready and salt available. here in philadelphia, they have 50,000 tons. before the weather hits, some roads have already been brined to prevent freezing. the streets department tells us 70 trucks will hit the roads. crews will be ready to salt starting at 7:00 p.m. and in new jersey, the quest to keep the roads safe is well underway. atlantic county there as crews today readied the salt trucks as we wait for the first flakes. delaware, crews are ready and waiting. operators are prepped and ready

the coughing. that was one of the bigger problems. >> reporter: this ocean city new jersey man it was the cold that wouldn't end. the same for this guy. >> i took a little bit of throat spray. other than that -- >> reporter: how long have you had it? >> since new year's. >> reporter: when you check into local er's it's easy to see they're well aware winter is here. >> we are busy. >> reporter: the emergency director says what we call cold and flu season is a typical winter. >> there are folks that should stay home and sequester themselves away and engage in supportive therapy. if someone is starting to get into respiratory distress or if they're with the gi illness starting to get dehydrated, that's when they need to come see us. >> reporter: viruses typically knock people out of commission for a few days, doctors say the bigger problems are

complications. we're in the midst of a triple threat. flu season is ramping up as colds and viruses as well as stomach bugs are making the rounds. while abington's more than 80 beds were filling up, doctors say they're able to triage patients quickly and get them treated or admitted. doctors say prevention is the best way to prevent you from ending up here. >> healthy living. drink lots of fluids. good hygiene. >> reporter: we're told that over the course of about a week or more that 1,400 patients were actually admitted to the hospital. that's about 40% of the people who came to the emergency room. and we're told just because the winter gatherings are over, school is back in session so you can expect the younger ones to start passing around the germs, making for long winter cold and flu season. reporting live in abington, nbc 10 news. a local man was force today play the waiting game for a new pair of glasses after eye

today the white house listed its last event focused on stopping violence and sexual assault on college campuses. the campaign is called it's on us. and today the white house hosted a summit that included student leaders, campus communities, businesses, and survivors. three dozen colleges in pennsylvania received nearly $1 million in grants because of the campaign. ♪ makes you want to sing along. mark your calendars, the piano man is coming back to philly. billy joel will return to citizen's bank park saturday september 9th. and mayor kenny has declared that day billy joel day. this will be the fourth year a row he'll perform at the

ballpark. philadelphia rapper mcmill has apparently broken up with his super based girlfriend niciy min minaj. they could be seen courticide at sixers game. it's the weather, nbc 10 at ninth at wilmington. wind, very cold. the snow is coming is what everyone's talking about. >> let's go to glenn "hurricane" schwartz with the latest. everyone wants to know the timing and the totals. the timing is fortunate for most of us and the snow removal crews happening overnight when there's fewer cars on the ground. we have another issue on saturday, two days in a row. that doesn't happen very often. cape may, that's an area most likely to get the significant accumulation on saturday. not as -- not more than what

they're going to get tonight. tonight's snow, 7:00 p.m. to 5 obam a.m., the peak of it between 11 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. go out and watch it. average two inches, locally three in some of the higher elevations. remember, even though the snow is over with, well before 7:00 a.m., the snow falls isn't going anywhere unless you get rid of it. maybe able to brush it off of your car, even off the sidewalk. could get a little bit fluffy in parts of the area. you can see on the radar we're getting more and more returns here. there's more and more moisture, shooting into the atmosphere. eventually, it will be enough to fall to the ground. that's what's happening back out to the west. so we could start seeing some snow flakes within the next couple of hours in parts of the area. steadier snow comes a little bit later. we're down to 30 in allentown. life the places will cool down over the next few hours. when the snow starts, that helps

cool us even more. 7:30 tonight we're below freezing in philadelphia. plus, it's nighttime, so it will be easy for the snow to stick on untreated surfaces. and on your cars and sidewalks and driveways and the peak of it in the middle of the night. and then as you get up in the morning, if you get up real early you might be able to see if especially if you're in new jersey. 5:00 a.m. probably not going to see it in pennsylvania or delaware. you'll see it perhaps at the shore briefly. then it's gone. this is a quick moving system here. so the amounts are limited because of the time and the fact that it's really not a big storm. a couple inches on average. this is a more significant storm. it's far to the south. it's going to cause big problems for atlanta to north carolina, forn

snow up in the clouds. the lower levels of the atmosphere are pretty dry. so it's evaporating as it comes to the -- towards the ground. the visibility will get cut down as the snow actually starts to get closer to the ground. you can see on the live radar we're getting light returns of those snow flakes up in the clouds. and it's growing a little bit and the more it grows, the more saturation goes into the air, the more likely it is to reach the ground. this is the stuff that's reaching the ground now. into central pennsylvania, through just about all of ohio. it's a solid area, but it's not that big an area and we don't have real, real intense snow going on. but 8:00, it's still mostly dry across the area. but we could see a really quick burst by 9:00, 10:00 as the moisture thickens up from the west. the temperatures go below the freezing mark and the middle of the night. that's when it's going to be the heaviest. but it's already starting to
