the lower levels of the atmosphere are pretty dry. so it's evaporating as it comes to the -- towards the ground. the visibility will get cut down as the snow actually starts to get closer to the ground. you can see on the live radar we're getting light returns of those snow flakes up in the clouds. and it's growing a little bit and the more it grows, the more saturation goes into the air, the more likely it is to reach the ground. this is the stuff that's reaching the ground now. into central pennsylvania, through just about all of ohio. it's a solid area, but it's not that big an area and we don't have real, real intense snow going on. but 8:00, it's still mostly dry across the area. but we could see a really quick burst by 9:00, 10:00 as the moisture thickens up from the west. the temperatures go below the freezing mark and the middle of the night. that's when it's going to be the heaviest. but it's already starting to

taper off in reading, allentown and the poconos by 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. 5:00 a.m., the only place we'll be seeing snow is towards the shore. by 7:00 a.m., it's dry out there. because it's so cold, and there's so little wind, that snow's going to be there, just like this picture. on the side of the roads and on your sidewalk and your driveway and on top of your car. there's the light snow, 7:00 to 9:00. peak of the storm 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. i'm expecting three inches on average. three in some of the higher elevations, but it won't be snowing during the friday morning rush hour, which helps things. philadelphia temperature is border line also. in the suburbs it's going to be clearly cold enough to stick on untreated surfaces. lehigh valley 26 degrees, 7:00 a.m.

just look, it's over with. even some sun peeking out in parts of the area by 7:00 a.m. we'll also get into the saturday threat, which has more potential for other parts of the area. that's in a few minutes. the streets department has been busy filling trucks at this salt yard in west philadelphia. the major roads were already brined, the department expects to begin salting around 7:00 tonight. >> road crews in newark new castle county were busy today as well. they've been pretreating roads across the entire state doing all they can to make for a smooth commute in the morning. we're not expecting a large amount of snow but it will be the most snow we've seen this winter. >> if you're rusty on what to do nbc 10 has you covered. let's continue with our team coverage with ted greenburg. people who help clear the roads, they're getting geared up, too? >> reporter: they're getting set to work long hours to keep the

you can see the sump pump that's leading towards the basement. neighbors tell me the water started gushing out of the middle of the block from underneath the metal plate they say is covering a sinkhole that's been a problem for the better part of a year. >> like a bang sound. we were in the house and heard like a bang. >> reporter: and then came the flood. we saw your basement. >> yeah, have some water damage to it i would say. >> reporter: you seem to be taking this in stride. >> what else can you do? >> reporter: he's lived here for 40 years with his family believes the water main break and the ongoing problems with the sinkhole in the middle of milbrook road may be connected. >> the initial sinkhole started may 21stest of last year. >> we pay tax and they cover a sinkhole with a metal plate. this is what happens, it gets cold and there's water everywhere. >> gas and water is turned off. we'll go from there.

looking for the gunman who shot a man while he sat on his front porch. a bullet hit the man in the head around 9:00 last night on east indiana avenue in kensington. he's in the hospital in critical condition. investigators found 16 shell casings from two weapons in a park across the street. police aren't sure if the man was the intended target. philadelphia police say a group of men posing as pgw utility workers forced their way into a man's home and stole more than a thousand dollars. they say four to five men threw the 87-year-old homeowner on the couch as they ransacked his house. the attackers got away with $1,200. family members say the victim is shaken up but not physically hurt. coming up at 5:30, the signs pgw says you should look for to know when a real technician is at your door. today attorneys argued whether or not to retry the archdiocese official accused of covering up pedophile priests in philadelphia.

police spokesman says the suspects made quote terrible racist statements during the assault. but that investigators bleechb the victim was targeted because he has special needs, not because of his race. a new jersey family won't be allow today demolish the home where they say an anonymous person stalked them. a planning board rejected the proposal. neighbors in westfield union county say the house is magnificent and beautiful and raising it would destroy their block. the homeowners proposed replacing the house with two homes because they said they cannot move into the existing house. philadelphia district attorney's office is under fire for not pressing charges against a teenage girl involved in a fight with an officer. video went viral earlier this week. police say the girl slapped the officer in the face and then the officers threw the teen to the ground and punched her. the officer was placed on

administrative duty. the teen wasn't charged. the head of the flp said the da is looking the other way. now a spokesperson for the da responded with this statement saying district attorney williams will never apologize for relying on high standards before deciding to take away someone's freedom. the district attorney believes that everyone should be treated the same and held to the same standards, regardless of if they are a police officer or not. we have new details about yesterday's trolley crash in west philadelphia. the ntsb said today it's sending a team to philly to investigate. more than 40 people were hurt when one trolley rear ended another. it happened along lancaster avenue. septa said the trolleys should have been running ten minutes apart. k mart stores are closing, three of them in our area. nbc 10 is over the store in

pleasa pleasantville. it's part of the their plan to downsize across the country. macy's announces plans to close dozens of its stores across the country following a disappointing holiday shopping season. four stores in our area will be affected. the retailer is also shutting down stores in the morris town mall and voorhies town center. nbc nightly news is looking into what the closures mean for retail as we know it. the future of department stores in your neighborhood and whether the future really is all online. it's coming up on nbc nightly news at 6:30. with the new year comes higher gas prices around the region. according to aaa, the average price in the pennsylvania suburbs jumped $0.14 in the last week. south jersey is up six cents. delaware jumped eight cents. the price of oil and high demand over the holiday weekend contributed to price increases.

the larger price, jumped in pennsylvania can overall be contributed to the state tax increase that kicked in on the first of the year. all right, everyone, i want you to see this right here. heavy flakes coming down already in kentucky. this is the same system that will bring snow to our region. look at those whiteout conditions there. we expect that to arrive later tonight. >> we're keeping track of bitter cold temperature and another chance for snow this weekend. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with your forecast. >> we don't normally get storm threats two days in a row. we also don't normally get the flag not moving when you're going to get snow. what happens is, the snow is just going to fall straight down. it's going to look beautiful. from your window looking out in the middle of the night. because it's coming overnight mostly. 7 a p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the peak is 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. average two inches, some of the

higher elevations in chester upper bucks, upper montgomery, around three. by 7:00 a.m., it's not snowing anymore but the snow that has fallen is still there. because there's no wind to knock it off. there's no warm up to melt it. we're getting a little bit more on the radar. most of this not reaching the ground yet. low levels of the atmosphere are still dry. out here, the western half of pennsylvania, west virginia, and now eastern ohio, it is reaching the ground. that's where the significant snow is. 33 at philadelphia now. it's below freezing in allentown, trenton. the temperatures going down during the evening and they'll go down more once the snow starts falling later tonight. 8:00 it's still mostly dry. but the temperatures are below freezing. here comes the snow. 9:00, 10:00, and a kick burst coming in here by 11:00 and

midnight. temperatures below freezing, so it's sticking on untreated surfaces. it's peaking in the middle of the night here, the darker blues indicate heavier snow. and then it's already ending by 4:00 a.m. north and west. by 5:00, it's over in philadelphia, by 6:00 it's over at the jersey shore. and then we're dry. for the day tomorrow. so here we go, by 8:30 tonight we got a few snowflakes, trenton, a little. and then by 11:30 tonight it's snowing in allentown, trenton, reading, middle of the night it's starting to taper off in allen town. it's getting heavier in atlantic city. 6:00 a.m. it's not snowing anywhere except for atlantic city. look at the temperatures, that's why we're not going to see a lot of melting here. even peeks of sun come out

friday morning. how much snow with this first round? averaging around two, less to the north, less to the south. and again, a little bit more on the higher elevations. this is the other issue. this is saturday. this is a pretty big storm that's going to track well south of us. we're going to be on the edge of that one. and some of the computer models suggesting significant snows, especially right near the coast. new jersey and in southern delaware. so there's going to be more snow with the saturday system, toward the shore than the rest of us are going to get with this thing overnight tonight. the other thing we're all going to get is freezing cold. saturday mornings feeling like teens. saturday afternoon is feeling like teens. and then it gets colder. now it's starting to feel like single digits saturday night. sunday morning it's feeling like it's close to zero. sunday afternoon, not much

warmer. even in the middle of the afternoon it's feeling like 8 in allentown and doyles town. we have bitter cold coming this weekend. we have that snow on saturday especially at the jersey show and delaware. south jersey also has a chance of some. maybe a little bit of accumulation, if everything shifts a little bit to the north. then i may have to add a chance of snow up even to philadelphia. nobody gets snow on sunday. everybody gets wind, everybody gets cold. and after 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, nobody gets snow tomorrow either. >> glenn, thank you. if it seems like everyone you know is getting sick, you are probably right. the triple threat that's had doctors working overtime. that's next at 5:00. by peggy lee playing ]

right now at 5:30, it's getting closer. we're keeping an eye on the first alert radar as snow moves into our region. we could see the first flakes in the next few hours. road crews are ready to roll. camden county's trucks get ahead of the snow. and people are getting ahead of the snow. rock salt, quickly disappearing at hardware stores around the area, including here in atlantic county. the snow gets started tonight. by the time you wake up, you'll probably need to brush off your car in your driveway. >> let's get a closer look at the timing for your

neighborhood, including the morning commute here is chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> the timing is about as fortunate as we could get. most of the snow, including the heaviest snows fall in the middle of the night. this is i-95 in wilmington, obviously, one of the main arteries. and they're brining it, getting ready because at any moment some of these snowflakes that are up in the clouds will make it all the way down to the ground. which is what's happening now in central pennsylvania. most of this is not reaching the ground just yet. but this is a solid area of snow. that means a steady snow for several hours. once it does start. and this is coming generally after 8:00. you can see it moving in from the west. the temperatures go down once the snow starts. so it sticks on untreated surfaces. and as temperatures get near 25, 26 degrees, the snow gets kind of fluffy. it can be brushed off the car just with your gloves for

example. you get a broom and take care of the sidewalks. there's 4:30 in the morning and just about over. pennsylvania is dry by 5:00. most of the area is dry by 6:00. we're all dry. but temperatures aren't warming up a whole lot. if the sun comes out it might help melt a little bit on the sides of the roads. so the light snow arrives 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. the peak of it, 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. as it moves from west to east. and then it ends west to east. accumulations average around two inches. some of the higher elevations in chester, bucks, montgomery counties could be getting up to three. and then the friday morning rush, it's just not snowing during that period of time. the temperature will be near freezing in philadelphia. but way below freezing else where. you can see how dry it is during the morning rush. so, again, that timing's good. saturday's a different issue.

different type of storm. different area affected. that's coming up. i'm tim furlong in delaware. crews have been in and out here today. they've been pretreating and brining primary and secondary roads in the entire state. they're monitoring road temperatures. the forecast and timing of the snow that will come through tonight, they'll to do everything they can to minimize the impact on tomorrow morning's rush. that was tim furlong there. let's head to the philly suburbs. all area streets have been brined. salt trucks will begin to roll when the first flakes start falling in a few hours. more than 300 trucks will be over during the overnight and morning hours. and with the snow comes the game of cones, so to speak. philadelphia police reminding everyone that's saving freshly parking spots with a parking cone is illegal. the department sent out this tweet today with a reference to the hbo show game of thrones.

door. >> they turned around and said if he didn't give them money or whatever they were going to beat him up. that's all he said. >> reporter: detectives interviewed the victim but at this time do not have any leads. pgw says these incidents happen occasionally and almost always target the most vulnerable. shaken but not physically injured, the 87-year-old has no plans to move. despite his family's urging. pgw and other utility companies have come together to put together a guide to tell customers how to keep themselves safe. they say first and foremost don't immediately and open your door if it's unannounced. check out to see if they are driving a car with the company's logo. they should show you a badge. if you have a bad feeling, call 911. reporting live in kensington,

nbc 10 news. mourners are remembering a state trooper shot and killed in central pennsylvania. hundreds paid their respects to trooper landon weaver at his funeral in altoona today. weaver was just 23 years old. he had just married his high school sweetheart. he was shot and killed last friday while responding to a domestic incident outside altoona. police say the gunman was a 32-year-old jason robson. fellow troopers later killed robson after they say he made threats and refused to obey orders. we have a sketch of a man who has been exposing himself to teenage girls and women in burlington county. take a good look. in each case he's been wearing nothing from sneakers. two teenage girls say he chase said them from a mark last friday. and police in medford say a man fitting the description encountered two women.

if you see him, call police. and this follows another case of indecent exposure that we reported last night. police in evesship township say the man was peeking into a woman's home. but the description of that individual is different than the ones from the prior incidents. this man described as tall and slender. west chester university has a new leader but he's a familiar face around campus. he's been serving as interim president since last spring. he began teaching there in 1983. he's the school's 15th president. next at 5:00, donald trump deposed. while the president elect has to give testimony in a lawsuit. plus, preventing peanut allergies in children. doctors have some new advice for parents.

high level intelligence officials are heading to new

york tomorrow. they will brief president elect trump on their classified findings about allegations that russia interfered in the election by hacking e-mails. president obama received the findings today. this morning, the director of national intelligence testified before the senate that russia undoubtedly interfered in the election. but james clapper didn't say whether russia's actions were aimed at helping donald trump win. he also stopped short of calling the alleged interference an act of war. two weeks now from takie office donald trump took a deposition today. it stems from a lawsuit after a chef backed out of an opening. it was described as routine. preparations for this month's inauguration are coming together. congress unveiled the tickets for the ceremony. next week the tickets will be released to members of congress. there are nearly 250,000 color

there is no way to miss this. it's absolutely going to snow tonight. 33 in philadelphia, 30 in allentown, coatsville wilmington down to 29. it will drop more when the snow actually starts. and here we are, 7:00, 8:00, start to get a few flakes in parts of the area. 10:00, much of the region is seeing at least some snow and in the middle of the night, just about everybody is seeing snow. the darker blue indicating the heavier snow, although there's not really, really dark. it's a little bit darker towards the jersey show at 2:00 in the morning when it's already ending in the northern and western suburbs. 4:30 a.m. and it's just about over in philadelphia and delaware. it will take another hour to end down toward the shore. look at the temperatures, it's not going to get up close to freezing during the day tomorrow. now, how much snow? i'm thinking generally an average of around two inches. like i said a little bit more in

the higher elevations. lesser amounts up to the north and to the south. that's with the friday system. keep that in mind. tomorrow morning, by 7:00 a.m., everybody is -- it's just not snowing anymore. but it's cold. and you got to get rid of the snow that's on your car, on your sidewalks and driveways. and it's still cold through 9:00 a.m. temperature doesn't go up very much. maybe the sun coming out a little bit will help melt things. this is a more significant storm that's going to be developing friday night and saturday. way down to the south it's going to track offshore. we'll be on the northern edge of this. and this has a lot more moisture, so it has more potential, especially right along the delaware beaches and the jersey shore. just a 50 mile change in the track would bring some of that heavier snow towards the shore. and that's possible. and if we do have that 50 mile shift, we'll even get some snow

in the philadelphia area. still not going to get it in the poconos, this is the european model, world's best, this afternoon showing an average of about three inches along the jersey shore and down into the delaware beaches. that's about an average for the various models. all the models are showing how cold it's going to be and feel. it's going to feel like the teens all day on saturday. the weekend is just brutal. and then on sunday morning, it's feeling like it's closer to zero. sunday afternoon, it still feels like it's only eight degrees in doyles town. the high temperatures over the weekend. the average high is 40. no where near that saturday and sunday. sunday with the wind is going to feel the coldest. but no precipitation there. here's your storm on saturday. jersey shore getting it. delaware getting some. south jersey getting some. and as you can see, we separate different neighborhoods. some neighborhoods are going to get it saturday, others won't. >> thank you so much, glenn.

a new jersey judge won't force a catholic school to allow a girl to play on the boy's basketball team. a 13-year-old sydney philips want today play at the boy's team in essex county because the girl's season had been canceled. cindy's family argued the school didn't have a rule specifically prohibiting girls from playing on the boys' team. today a judge said the family failed to prove sydney had a legal right to play on the boys' team. peanut allergies are a problem for many families. >> doctors have new information that could help. we'll have the details next at 5:00. 6:00, working together, the message protesters have for donald trump as they prepare to march during and after inauguration day.

see you coming up at 6:30 for nightly news. thanks lester we'll see you then. there is a big news to report about preventing peanut allergies in kids. >> experts say virtually all babies need to have a taste of peanut long before they can walk. nbc 10's erica edwards explains. >> to make a mushy and infant appropriate form of peanut. >> reporter: a tiny bit of this special baby food could put an end to a majority of peanut allergies. new guidelines from the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases say most babies should have foods with peanut in them by six months of age. >> there is a window where the immune system isn't going to recognize it as dangerous. >> reporter: that window is four to six months for babies at high risk of developing a peanut allergy. high risk means they were either born with severe eczema or have

an egg allergy. they should only be given the peanut under supervision. babies given peanut early on are 80% less likely to develop a peanut allergy. a doctor advised the shriner family to give their daughter peanut protein after she turned six months old. her older brother had been allergic to peanuts. even though camden tested negative for the allergy, mom kelly says it was unsettling to give her baby something that could possibly make her sick. >> it was scary in that regard, but i think it's worked. she's two. we've been doing it for 18 months and hasn't had reaction. >> reporter: kids can introduce kids without high risk around six months old. never give a baby or any child under age four whole peanuts. they're big choking hazards. erica edwards, nbc news. it's also important to look for signs of allergic reaction
