"early today" starts right now. good to be with you. i'm francis rivera. we begin with news that has everyone buzzing at the golden globes, actress meryl streep who received a lifetime achievement award turned her acceptance remarks into an all-out rebuke against donald trump. >> hollywood is crawling with us onners and foreigners. and if we kick them all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts. >> and while never mentioning trump by name, the staunch hillary clinton supporter went after him for what she says was the year's most effective performance. >> but there was one performance this year that stunned me. it was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most-respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back.

the suspect himself. gabe gutierrez has the report. >> reporter: court documents allege 26-year-old esteban santiago told investigators he planned the attack, buying a one-way ticket from anchor raj, though it's not clear why he chose ft. lauderdale. in november the iraq war veteran was admitted to a mental health center in alaska after telling feb agents he was hearing voices and the government was controlling his mind, making him watch isis videos. santiago's brother in puerto rico says the system failed him. >> when they heard that, they sent him to a security hospital. you know, only for four days. you know, four days? >> reporter: on "meet the press" defense secretary ash carter said the u.s. has not done enough to help veterans deal with mental health issues. >> we keep learning more about how to deal with this kind of illness. we're going to learn more ask, and we need to do more as we learn more, absolutely. >> reporter: at ft. lauderdale's airports long lines and a swarm of security. cleanup crews work to reopen the

area. the rampage unfolded. >> thanks to gabe gutierrez. investigators say they're still trying to determine if the shooting was an act of terrorism. federal law enforcement sources tell nbc news they believe the gun used in the shooting was the same one authorities in alaska had taken from santiago and then returned to him after he visited the fbi offices there. and the associated press is reporting fbi special agent george pyrro, the agent who was saddam hussein's sole interrogator in 2004, is leading the probe into saunt yaug i don't's alleged rampage. a horrific terror attack on israeli seasonals in jerusalem captured on video. in the background you can see a truck ram into a group of soldiers and after hitting the crowd first the driver put the truck in reverse and ran over even more people. four soldiers, three women and a man, were kill the. 15 injured. the driver of the truck was neutralized. police have identified the driver as a 28-year-old east

nbc meteorologist bill karins has the latest, how bad is it going to get? >> it's not going to get a lot worse but it's not going to get better quickly either. we're getting done with the first big shot. the storm over the weekend. the river is going to remain in place slightly, then another storm coming in on tuesday. right now the heaviest rains are around santa barbara, shifted south. still rain and snow at the higher elevations but not the same intensity. the next days we're expecting the possibility of 5 to 10 inches at the highest elevations. so it's going to be a long time before those rivers come down. we still will get some additional flooding. that's the latest local forecast, here's a look at the big stories around your area. we'll continue with the cold conditions in the northern portion of the country. the warmup has begun from colorado to kansas south ward through texas and new mexico. 71 in amarillo today. all that cold air is long gone. we'll watch that warmup beginning today. that warmup will be coming across the country as we go throughout this week after a bitterly cold morning today.
