trump's white house is increasingly looking like a family affair. the latest hire is jared kushner, ivanka trump's husband. he is a power broker, meeting with house speaker paul ryan to discuss tax reform. >> and he's very good at politics. >> reporter: as a son-in-law, he has unique influence. but it's raising questions about nepotism and potential conflicts of interest. to combat those concerns, he will step aside as ceo of his family's real estate business. divest assets. as for the nepotism law, after jfk appointed his brother as attorney general, his lawyer says it does not apply to the white house. pointing out hillary clinton heading up her husband's health

care reform efforts. while kushner won't receive a paycheck and won't need congressional approval, today, the senate begins a speed round of confirmation hearings for the president-elect's cabinet picks. >> i think they will all pass. they are at the highest level. >> reporter: first up, the first senator to endorse trump, jeff sessions, in line for attorney general. but expected to face tough questions over accusations he made racially insensitive remarks decades ago. and john kelly, trump's choice to lead homeland security. three on wednesday. including rex tillerson. and three more on thursday. >> several high, important hearings will fall on the same day, prohibiting the senators and the american people to participate. >> reporter: three picks failed to pass the ethics reviews.

and while the team insists the forms has been filed, the ethics office calls the fast pace unprecedented. republicans excuse that. >> everybody will be properly vetted as they have been in the past. >> reporter: the bottom line, the confirmation hearings in the next several weeks, set up the first showdown between the incoming trump administration and democrats here on capitol hill. trump's team insists they're taking this very seriously. touting the work they put into it, including 70 hours of mock hearings for each nominee, they say has been peppered with 120 questions per session. matt and meredith? >> peter alexander, thank you very much. jamie garelic, jared's attorney. nice to see you. >> good morning. >> can jared kushner, who is a successful businessman in a wide range of businesses from real estate to publishing, divest his

direct interest in those businesses in time by next friday? and can he also separate himself from the appearance of links to businesses? >> he's going to do three things, matt. he is going to step away from his businesses. he's going to extricate himself entirely. that's number one. number two, he's going to divest many of his assets. and for assets that remain, he will follow the normal recusal procedures. and those are the ones that have been followed by scores of people over decades of experience. >> he's going to sell some of his interest to his brother. he's going to sell other interest and place it in a trust that's controlled by his mother, a prominent attorney, who used to work for rand paul. matthew sanderson says this sounds like a shell game. you're taking an asset and moving it to a family member. why isn't it a shell game? >> ease in a family business. and consistent with all of the

federal rules. one can sell interest to another family member. he is not going to be a beneficiary of this trust. not a contingent beneficiary of this trust. i'm very comfortable that this arrangement is appropriate under the rules. office of government ethics has given us advice. and we followed it. >> there's a question of nepotism. how do you get around that? there's real concerns. >> our view is two-fold. the anti-nepotism statute doesn't apply to the immediate office of the president. the so-called white house office. by its own terms. and after the anti-nepotism statute was passed in the late '60s, a decade later congress passed the law that said that the president can have total discretion over his immediate staff, without regard to any other law, including the anti-nepotism law. and we have examples of this.

and i think as -- i'm a democrat. i think that a president should be able to get advice from the person he wants to get advice from. >> we had andrew card on this show, not long ago. he was chief of staff for george w. bush. he says when it comes to the staff closest to the president, that person should be able to speak truth to power, give an unvarnished opinion and you should be able to fire that person. doesn't that get complicated when that person is your son-in-law? >> that's between donald trump and jared kushner. i believe a president should be able to get advice from whomever he or she wants. if hillary clinton had been elected and wanted to have chelsea in her immediate staff giving her advice, that would have been right. this is the judgment that congress made in 1978. it said that the white house office is the purview of the

president. he can decide. she can decide. >> all right. jamie galelick. thank you very much. let's talk about the confirmation hearings and the issues facing president-elect trump's attorney general, jeff sessions. hallie jackson is at trump tower with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, meredith. you're seeing a gop blitz to try to boost support for jeff sessions, who is expected to face questions, in particular, about his civil rights record. sessions has been a backer of donald trump since nearly the beginning. the president-elect clearly trusting him to be the nation's top prosecutor. the question, now, of course, whether he will get the senate's stamp of approval. after decades on capitol hill, jeff sessions will be squarely in the spotlight. the alabama senator set to face scrutiny as donald trump pick

for attorney general. >> i think he's going to do great. high-quality man. >> reporter: sessions facing fire from gay rights advocates, worried about his record. and high-profile muslim-americans, like keyser kahn. >> i'm not a racist. it not insensitive to blacks. >> reporter: that's sessions in 1986, defending himself, in a bid to become a federal judge. a bid, derailed by accusations of racism. senator patrick leahy voted against sessions then. and is skeptical now. >> i think attorney general should represent everybody. >> the senator has a long record for fighting for voting rights, civil rights. and he'll be an attorney general for all americans. >> reporter: as attorney general, sessions' team said he would prioritize keeping crime rates low, fighting terrorism, and focusing on building

relationships with law enforcement. sessions, the first sitting senator to ens or the the president-elect, winning praise from trump's top confidants. >> he's been the leader of this populist revolt against the political elite. sessions' hearing is likely to stretch multiple days. he is getting support, now, from the only african-american republican. and former secondary of state condoleezza race. but cory booker plans to take the unprecedented step of testifying against a fellow citizening senator. also on the witness list, matt lewis. >> it's going to be a long week. thank you very much. a manhunt is intensifying for a suspect who shot and killed a police officer in orlando, florida. nbc's jacob rascon is there. jacob, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. hundreds of law enforcement officers have been searching all day and all night for this person.

a state-wide alert has been sent out, looking for a fugitive for someone that is already on the run in connection with another murder. a massive manhunt through the night. but no sight of markeith lloyd, on the run after gunning down deborah clayton. >> she wasn't just about the blue. she was about the black, white and the blue. we lost a guardian angel today. >> reporter: police say clayton, a 17-year veteran of the force, approached lloyd after receiving a tip he was in the area. >> when he realized he wasn't going to be able to get around this officer, he pulled a fun with and started shooting. >> we have one officer shot. >> reporter: lloyd's criminal history stretches back two decades and includes a laundry list of felony charges and convictions. he had been on the run for nearly a month after police say he shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

last month on what appears to be lloyd's facebook page, he wrote, goals to be on america's most wanted. >> we're going to bring this dirt bag to justice. and he's going to jail. >> reporter: an orange county deputy searching for the fugitive, also killed when his motorcycle was hit in a traffic accident. deputy first class norman lewis was an 11-year veteran. >> just a loving, wonderful human being. >> reporter: as sergeant clayton's casket was escorted from the hospital, officers fought back tears, remembering her as a wife, a mother and dedicated community servant. she volunteered in programs to help young people like brandon cunningham. >> she was much more than a mentor. >> reporter: officer marlon mcclain worked alongside sergeant clayton. >> debra touched your heart. >> reporter: officials are pleading for the public's help.

away roads. bringing down trees across the west. and coating a region in ice, with a brutal deep freeze. the roads turn dangerous quickly. too many spinouts to count. in washington, one family, including this 4-year-old girl, rescued by firefighters. with dozens of rivers swollen above flood stage, hundreds of evacuations were ordered in reno, nevada, while homeowners are losing ground. it's not just the river rising. mountains are crumbling. mudslides, leaving many homeowners on shaky ground and nerves on-edge. >> a mudslide, probably coming from a couple miles up the hill. came back with a vengeance, started this morning. >> reporter: this storm system could dump as much as ten inches of rain and nine feet of snow.

democratic senator, debbie st stabnow, who said these are long leads. >> i'm not a big fanatic when it comes to cars. but the self-driving cars, when do we see them on the road? >> reporter: probably on this floor by 2019 and 2020. and in the dealerships by 2020, 2021. they talk about them as autonomous cars. there's four stages of autonomy. we're in the first stage, where cars can park themselves. they can avoid collisions and things like that. but a stage four autonomous car can drive in a congested city and a steering wheel without brakes. a driver doesn't do anything. that seems to be a reality upon us in three to four years. the issue is regulation and how much insurance it will cost to have one of these things. the car manufacturers say one thing. cars driven by computers will have fewer accidents than cars

the weather channel. mr. lauer? >> mr. roker. a big wild card, health care expenses. a 65-year-old couple will need around $260,000 to pay for unreimbursed medical expenses in their retirement years. that does not include long-term care, something that seven in ten people will need in their lifetime. how do you plan and pay for it? jean chatzky, good morning. >> good morning. >> last week, we did a segment on retirement. the last tip you had was stay healthy. now we know why. >> that's right. long-term care can cost you anywhere from about $44,000 to $96,000 a year, depending on what kind of care you need. you need a plan to pay for that. >> let's talk about the plans. there's traditional, long-term care, insurance. who is this good for? >> this is good for people who have more than $500,000 in assets, less than a few million

in assets. >> that's a lot. >> and that's not including your house, by the way. and the reason for this, and it's true of all long-term care policies we're going to talk about today, if you have less than $500,000 in assets, you're going to spend down. and you're going to, at least the way things stand right now, qualify for medicaid, which will step in and help pick up the slack. if you don't spend down your assets, you need to cover it yourself. traditional long-term care insurance, covers care when you need it. >> but -- >> not cheap. >> a policy for a 60-year-old couple, looks like it's going to cost about $2,000 a year. and it's limited. it's not going to pay for every single year you need care. it will cap out about three. >> that's one option. there's something else a hybrid plan. who is this good for? >> the same people, over $500,000 in assets, but you pay for it in a different way because it leaves something to your heirs. the things that people don't

like about long-term care is you pay thousands of dollars a year, if you don't use it, the money is sunk. it's like traditional insurance. you can use the benefit to pay for your care. you dip into the death benefit. if you don't use it, it's there for your heirs. but it's a more heavy up front cost. >> i can see people trying to remember what you said about long-term care. put them side-by-side and see how they stack up. >> right. with the traditional policy, like i said, you have a premium a couple thousand dollar a year, to start. with the hybrids, we're looking at $10,000. but you'll only pay the premiums over ten years. or you can pay it at once. the use it or lose it is the downside of the traditional policy. here, if you have unused money, it can go to your heirs. and there's a death benefit with the hybrid policy as long as you don't eat it up. >> we're talking about things that will happen in your

retirement years. when do you start shopping for this? >> you want to start about age 50. and ramp up your shopping quickly. by age 60, chronic conditions start to set in. and that's when the insurance either say, it's going to cost you more money or we're not going to cover you at all. you want an a-rated insurance. you want to shop around. >> you mentioned earlier, some of the options were for people with $500,000 in options and above. a lot of people haven't been that fortunate. haven't been able to save that kind of money. what do you say for them? >> first of all, you got to look at medicaid and what you do to qualify for that. longevity insurance. you put money away to buy yourself a paycheck at age 65. if you have a paid off mortgage, you can look at a reverse mortgage. complicated. we should do a segment on them. it's an option. you can pay for care yourself. or what most people do is rely on friends and family members. but you want to be talking to
