temperatures will climb there and throughout the area later today. a live look right now at radar shows that snow is moving into our area, and some of it may make it onto the ground. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist crystal klei is here. >> what we're looking at right now is a little deceptive on your radar and satellite map, because a lot of this is not going to make it to the ground, although it does look like it. remember, when we're looking at radar, this is showing a picture up in the sky. very cold, dry air is settled at the surface, so it's not allowing a lot of this snow to make it to the ground. what i do expect is some may be able to see that. let's talk about that, the ability to see some snow is with that potential. some flakes making it to the surface. as we go farther south into the

suburbs of philadelphia, much less likelihood as this continues to pass along. harrisburg isn't even getting any reports of snow on the ground yet. only a few spots right in central pa. so a lot of this, again, is not actual snow that we are seeing down on the ground. your temperatures, though, are finally starting to pick up a bit. we're at 29 degrees in philadelphia. look at vineland, 33 degrees. wilmington at 30. finally above freezing in atlantic city. first time we've gone above freezing for quite a few days as we saw the snowy conditions. as we go into tomorrow morning, temperatures will be feeling way better than what we've been seeing. take a look at that. mt. holly 40, vineland 40, 40 for atlantic city. conditions are warming up. we're going to track how warm those temperatures go by later today, and we'll talk about the potential for some of us to see rain overnight in just a few

minutes. police are looking for a group of men who they think are behind two separate attacks in the frankfort section of philadelphia this morning. >> in one attack, a man was robbed and shot, in another a woman was assaulted. the two attacks happened just blocks apart, the first is griscom street, the other on penn avenue. what do we know? >> these attacks happened within minutes of each other. we did get brand new information from detectives as they search for that trio of armed robbers. within the past hour, we've learned that police are now searching for a fourth suspect in one of those robberies. it started here on the 5100 block of frankford avenue in frankford. an 18-year-old woman got off the septa bus at pratt. this was just after midnight. police say the victim was walking when a man grabbed her by the neck from behind, hit her in the head with a gun and demanded money. three other men who were with

the suspect joined in and began punching and kicking the victim. three of the suspects were armed and dressed in all black with masks. she walked herself to aria frankford hospital. nearby at aria tourist hospital, police were interviewing a second victim who had been shot in the hip. it happened a few blocks away and after the female victim was attacked. police say the masked men matching that description attempted to rob a 29-year-old man. the male victim said the suspects got out of a white car. two had handguns, a third was armed with a shotgun. they ordered the victim to the ground, searched his pockets and demanded money. he was also kicked and then shot in his left side. he managed to walk himself to the hospital. police are looking for that vehicle. it's described as being a white possibly 2004 chevy impala. anyone with information should

give police a call. i should mention police, by the way, checking surveillance cameras in the area looking for those suspects. reporting live now, pamela as bor -- osborn, nbc 10 news. officers say a woman was being robbed in a second floor room when a man came to her aid. that's when the intruder shot that man twice in the head. the gunman ran from the house and hasn't been caught right now. police are not sure how the victim and the woman may be related. sky force 10 is over the scene of a house fire. this is paulsboro, gloucester county. you can see water getting on the fire, but there are reports of water issues in battling the flames. one hose you can see getting to the fire. fire officials tell us everyone got out of the house. this is on west broad street. no reports of any injuries. we'll keep you updated on air and on our nbc 10 app. police are still looking for

answers after a dumbbell crashed through a car windshield on a new jersey turnpike, injuring an elderly driver. >> that 74-year-old man is in critical injury. he was behind the wheel of an suv when a 50-pound dumbbell struck the windshield. they veered off the road in a rural part of salem county. there was a passenger in the passenger seat who was not hurt. they couldn't believe what they saw. >> in the past i've heard with kids throwing stuff off, but that's on overpasses and roads, but not major highways like this. >> it's not clear if the dumbbell flew off a car by mistake or if it was thrown from an overpass on purpose. we now know it could take days to fix a main break in

fishtown. it opened up, swallowing two cars in the process. 21 homes in that block remain without water. natural gas has been cut off in six of the homes as a precaution. crews will be digging down today to make repairs. it happened today. new jersey governor chris christie will deliver his final state of the state address. the governor will speak to the state legislature in trenton this afternoon at 2:00. this is video of last year's address. sor sources close to the governor says he plans to use the entire speech for a plan to fight the nation's drug epidemic. he plans to provide treatment, curb the supply of prescription painkillers and support law enforcement. sky force 10 was over this overturned vehicle in east falls just about an hour ago. this is long gypsy lane and schoolhouse lane. the fire department as well as police worked to free the driver in that. time now to check the roads across the region with first

alert traffic reporter jessica boynton. jess, what are you watching? it looks like slow going. >> we're watching construction, though. no major blocks in our roads right now, this is just construction. we're moving past 17th street, so you can see some delays there. other than that, the roads look okay. there is a crash in worcester and valley forge road. you might detour there. also watching the bridges, there is a scheduled opening. watch for delays on either side of the bridge. other than that, the betsy ross is doing okay. the ben franklin bridge is clear moving into philadelphia. in new jersey, the 403 freeway looks great both directions. this is what's headed toward philadelphia, the drive times from that point in deppfort, no problems there, either.

the first confirmation hearings are under way this morning for the president-elect's cabinet nominees. one of the contentious choices involve donald trump's pick for attorney general. a live look as senator jeff sessions is appearing before the judicial committee. sessions said he would recuse himself from investigations of hillary clinton if he is chosen as attorney general. he is speaking on civil rights and justice reform. nbc's tracie potts has more on the hearings ahead.

washington, d.c. plenty of questions here. more wednesday when the president-elect holds his first news conference since july. questions will now address hiring his son-in-law, jared kushner, as a senior white house adviser. now, a trump attorney says they don't think the federal nepotism law is going to be a problem for kushner because courts have reviewed it and finds it applies to federal departments, not the white house. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. meantime new jersey senator cory booker is taking a challenging step to challenge sessions. booker will testify against sessions, a sitting senator. sessions is against key ideals of the voting rights tact and is trying to block immigration reform. rogues in hoods tackled sessions as he approached the courtroom. they were escorted out of the

hearing. sessions was rejected for a potential judgeship. there is a hearing for educational nominee bets y voss and the hearing for mike pomp arapompaii has been set for thursday. the reports that russia was behind that computer hacking during the presidential campaign. james clapper will testify this afternoon before the senate armed services committee. the declassified report tied russian president vladimir putin to the hacking of democratic party accounts. also happening today, president obama will deliver his farewell address to the nation in his adopted hometown of

chicago. people snatched up thousands of free tickets to tonight's events. in just minutes those tickets are now going for up to $5,000 each on line. in light of the president's speech, we have some programming notes to tell you about. tonight, catch a new episode of "the wall," airing at 8:00. president obama's speech is at 9:00, followed by a new episode of "this is us" at 10:00. tracy? >> prosecutors say they'll finish dylann roof's testimony about noon. the government rescued its case in the penalty phase yesterday. roof also rested himself after calling no witnesses on his behalf. prosecutors are asking for the death penalty. we're following breaking news just in to nbc 10 from the university of alabama and here's a live picture. we're told police are responding

to reports of a hostage standoff near campus, and you can see heavy police presence there, very heavy. they say this started with a robbery at a bank on the campus. i just checked the university's twitter page. it's a credit union there. officers have closed off the area. there are no reports of anyone hurt. we're still getting just a little bit of information coming in. we'll keep you updated on nbc 10 on air and look for updates on our nbc 10 app. severe winter weather has led to some dangerous driving conditions in the pacific northwest. one family slid off the road in their minivan and their rescue was all caught on camera. emergency crews helped a mother and her three young kids yesterday. they helped the children out of the car after the minivan slid off the road and onto an embankment. they were able to smile about it later. >> we ventured out and it was too slippery. >> and we slid off the road.

>> and we slid off the road. >> fortunately no one was hurt and they were all smiles. really good spirits about that. roads in the area should improve as temperatures climb to the low 40s. elsewhere out west, snow causing problems in the sierra and mountains. they are using snowplows to clear several inches of snow. one town is expected to get 6 inches by the end of the week. winds whip certain parts of colorado. in colorado springs, winds reached more than 100 miles an hour, making it difficult to even walk outside. some people had to hold onto trees. the powerful gusts blew windows out of downtown buildings and forced the evacuation of a courthouse. on a nearby highway, the strong winds knocked over tractor-trailers. trees and power lines were also toppled. nothing like that for us. instead we're right now looking here in the poconos because this

is one of the areas that may see some snow as we go through the later part of today and even overnight. albeit, this isn't going to be a high accumulation event, and most of the precipitation overnight is going to fall as rain. here's a look in your lehigh valley neighborhoods. these temperatures are still below freezing, but we're going to finally break that spell as we get into the afternoon in much of our region. temperatures right now looking in burkes county, reading, 27 degrees. areas like allentown are at 25 degrees and south mountain 24. bass still at 22. still cold conditions out there, but we are really almost to the break in the cold and then it's that big warm-up ahead for us. here's radar and satellite. it looks like we've got snow in chester county. we're not getting snow at the

ground. radar is a picture a little higher in the sky. sometimes if it's too dry at the surface, those flakes do not make it all the way to the ground. i would not be surprised if we did see. they're now starting to report a little snow outside harrisburg, but for the most part, we're getting grande attacks of snow. a very brief-lived afternoon of flurry in the area. for most of us, though, we will remain dry and skbrus the clouds you see on the satellite. we've got more moisture coming our way and overnight i do expect some of us will see the wet stuff. here's a look at the clouds that are in place at 11:30. notice this model doesn't even give us some snow for the afternoon. now we're at 6:00. still those clouds. here's the overnight. about 11:00 at night, we start

to see some rain potential for most of us. we could see a little freezing rain or snow around parts. poconos, the northern edge of lehigh valley, burkes county, but most of it will be in rain because it's above freezing. this rain will also start melting off snow that's stuck to the ground, and then this rolls on out as we go through to your morning on wednesday. also looking for the potential of more to move in by wednesday night. here's the potential by tuesday afternoon. 40 in summerton, allentown up to about 36 degrees. we could see an isolated flurry. in new jersey, upper 30s as well. atlantic city, 42 and smyrna 49. we'll look at temperatures up to the 60s on your extended forecast 10-day at 10:00 next hour. >> really excited to hear that. thank you, krystal. roll up a sleeve and save a

people inside, but the american red cross wants you to get outside and give blood. you could save a life. judge carville hughes is head of the blood drive. welcome back. >> thank you. >> let's talk about the dire need for people to give blood. is there ever a time of year when you don't need people to give blood? >> i wish i could say that, but no. we actually need 14,000 donations every day in order to supply america's need for life-saving blood. >> and typically this time of year, things slow, right? >> things slow down because of the holidays, but then the cold weather has exacerbated it so people are staying in. in december we had to cancel 100 blood drives because of the weather and people not signing up. so the need for blood in our region is really serious. >> you're really having to make up a deficit here. >> we are. we really need for people to donate. and it's so simple. >> it's easy.

warmer weather is on the way. the snow you see on the ground from saturday's storm will soon be melting away. here's a live look at the ben franklin parkway in philadelphia. no, boathouse row. there we go. but you can still see the snow. a live look at radar shows more snow moving into our area but will any of it actually hit the ground? let's find out from meteorologist krystal klei. >> you see it all over the place, but it's not actually making it to the ground in most of these places. you would need radar to be very close on location to get that picture, so instead we're here to interpret it for you. what i can tell you is that right now most of us are not actually seeing snow make it to the ground. that's all farther off to the west still. some of the deepest purples you see on radar here. that's where a few flakes are moving through, but really, we're talking a few flakes. this is going to quickly skirt on by. what we're talking about is an

isolated chance on the northern edge of our viewing area. burkes county, the lehigh area. we see the clouds in place as we go throughout the rest of today. tonight a different story. right now we're looking at temperatures that really have started to boost up. we're finally above freezing in most spots. millville at 33 degrees. haven't said that in a long time. even mt. pocono out of the single digits at 18 degrees currently. these numbers are going to continue on with this climb. take a look in philadelphia. this is your temperature trend here. as we go through the afternoon, we're going to see numbers really start to boost up, getting into the 30s and the upper 30s as we go into the overnight, even some 40s are possible. so we're looking at the expectation in the next several hours to really start to see that number get into the higher values. at least higher compared to what we've been seeing. then in the overnight, we'll also track a system passing, and

with temperatures mostly above freezing, that means rain that can start melting off snow. coming up, we'll take a closer look at that snow and we'll match up potentials neighborhood by neighborhood. through 10:00 a.m. this morning, local aaa crews had responded to more than 520 calls. 44% of those were due to dead car batteries. the freezing temperatures led to more than a thousand dead car battery calls over the weekend. katy? widespread flooding is wreaking havoc in much of the northwest. it's dumping relentless rain on the region and several feet of snow in the mountains. as nbc's miguel almaguer shows us, the rooifr iver is rising a cresting to levels we've not seen in years. >> reporter: overnight more misery for waterlogged california. the state crippled by drought now being punished with a

deluge, a steady storm washing away roads, bringing down trees across the west. and coating a region in ice with a brutal deep freeze. the roads turn dangerous quickly. too many spinouts to count. in washington, one family, including this four-year-old girl, rescued by firefighters. with dozens of rivers swollen above flood stage, hundreds of evacuations were ordered in reno, nevada while homeowners in gurnville, california are losing ground. it's not just the river rising, mountains are crumbling, mudslides leaving many homeowners on shaky ground and nerves on edge. >> there's a mudslide coming from probably a hundred yards up the hill. it came back with a vengeance starting this morning. >> reporter: this storm system could dump as much as 10 inches

of rain and 9 feet of snow. already in lake tahoe, 33.6 billion gallons of fresh water is poured into the lake, and even more is headed downstream. >> that was miguel almaguer reporting. california has suffered through five years of drought. officials say this storm is bringing far too much water too quickly. philadelphia police continue to look for a group of men after a pair of attacks overnight. in one case a man was robbed and shot. in another a woman was assaulted. the crimes happened just blocks apart in the city's frankford neighborhood, one on griscom street and another on frankford avenue. nbc's pam osborn is gathering more evidence. what are you learning, pam? >> reporter: we did get some brand new information from police about those two robberies. the first victim, an 18-year-old woman was attacked just after midnight in the frankford section of philadelphia as she walked from the frankford l.

she was right around pratt street. a man grabbed her and hit her in the head with a gun. three other men with the suspect started punching and kicking her as they demanded money. they took the victim's wallet before they took off from the scene. the victim walked herself to aria frankford hospital. around that time police were at aria toursdale hospital. they were called there after a 29-year-old man walked into the er with a gunshot wound. he was also robbed and attacked by three men on griscom street. that's not far from where police say the first attack took place. two of the suspects had handguns, a third was armed with a shotgun. the three suspects wore black masks, gloves and hooded sweatshirts, and they matched the description that the first female victim gave police. now police are going to be checking surveillance cameras in the area for a description, but there is one more clue here that came from the male victim. he said the suspects got out of a white car, possibly a 2004

chevy impala. anyone with information about the vehicle or those suspects should give police a call. reporting live outside of northea northeast. i'm pam osborn, nbc news. two bombings in afghanistan today has killed more than two dozen people and many are hurt. two explosions rocked kabul. the first explosion was carried out by a suicide bomber, the second was a car bomb. the taliban claimed responsibility. a massive manhunt continues today for the man linked to the deaths of two orlando police officers. >> nbc's jacob rascon has the latest from florida. >> reporter: a massive manhunt through the night but no sign of markeith loyd, a man police called desperate and very dangerous. on the road after gunning down master sergeant debra clayton.

police say clayton, a 17-year veteran of the force, approached loyd after receiving a tip that he was in the area. >> when he realized he wasn't going to be able to get around this officer, he pulled a gun and started shooting. >> reporter: loyd's criminal history stretches back more than two decades. it includes a laundry list of felony charges and convictions. he had already been on the run for nearly a month after police say he shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend, shade dixon. >> we're going to bring this dirtbag to justice and he's going to jail. >> reporter: as debra clayton's casket went by them, they welled up in tears. she helped young people like brandon cunningham. >> she was such a great person. so much more than a mentor. >> reporter: because the suspect grew up here, he might have had

a local performing arts center are bringing the theater experience to students across our region, and it comes with a very important message as well. the wolf performance arts center in bryn mawr is launching a butterfly project with a show called "the time we give each

other." here to tell us that is the artistic director and sophie, a juni junior. tell us what this is about. >> the butterfly project is brought to students that may not have access, and it's a drama about how we communicate in our modern world. >> sophie, how are you involved? >> i'm an actor in the show and i also helped to write it along with 13 other writers. >> tell me about it. what's the message? what did you write about? >> we all came together. we wanted to write about social justice, so we just came up with issues that were important to each one of us, and then we sort of combined it into a play, and that's the time we give each other. >> tell me about things that are important to students your age. >> the issue that came out on top was social media and how social media affects the lives

of kids because a lot of kids, it's the only thing they've been brought up with. >> tim, talk about that because i see you smiling. >> it was very fascinating. as one of the teaching artists who led the writing program, i come from a generation where social media was just sort of introduced in high school. so watching them, seeing the development of it, it was interesting to see how they communicate, what matters to them, how they feel they represent themselves and how they feel they're being interpreted. so the play is about those miscommunications and how we think we know someone with what articles they post and what music they like and what tweets they retweet. >> such a great message and you get to expose, as you were saying, students who otherwise wouldn't be exposed to the theater. >> the great thing about this play, it's student written and student performed. it's a great way to show students across the nation that they can do it because these students did it.

toursdale at 32 degrees. the snow on the ground will start to melt off a bit, overnight, especially because rain will be moving in that will help dissolve some of that snow. we're really starting to see that change to warmer conditions. here's the radar and satellite. it looks a little deceptive. it looks like we have snow spread across our entire zone. we checked ground reports. most of this is not actually making it to the ground. what we're calling for this afternoon, just an isolated chance of light flurries, but this is a very low potential. most of us are seeing such dry air at the surface that's stopping those flakes from making it to the ground. we could see just a little bit move through as we go through your afternoon hours. we pull this out and the big focus is the rain sitting to the west of us. as we go through tonight, that will be passing through our entire area, and for almost all of us, that will be in the form of rain. take a look. we go through your morning and

there we are, temperatures right now are in the upper 20s. in the afternoon they're in the mid-30s and i do expect that temperature will continue to boost as we go into the evening. not typical that you see this, but that's what's going to happen because we're finally spilling in warmer air. the system moves in through the west, brings us rain about 11:00 at night. this system will not affect our evening commute or our wednesday morning commute. that said, temperatures in the 40s. even areas like burkes county, lehigh valley, a chance we'll see rain before it all turns into freezing rain tonight. temperatures in your 40s by wednesday morning. let's talk that big warm-up, though. 39 late in the day. wednesday and wednesday night, another round of rain. then thursday up to 65 degrees in philadelphia. in the suburbs, about the same. just a little cooler. 38 for today, 49 for your

>> no, don't do that, don't do that. how do the guys make the team? there's way too many flyers to choose from, right? >> it's a process. we sat down with hound and some of the other local guys, and calhoun, of course, is president of the team and we said, who do we want back here? it's easy to say just bring the superstars back, but 50 years of flyers hockey, it's much more than just a couple superstars. we like to get a cross section. what's neat about this team is there's players from every decade coming back and players from every decade playing, which is kind of neat. you'll see parents bring your fathers, kids' grand fathers, and then you got the young kids coming. that's what's fun because you go back, i remember him, i remember that guy, stuff like that. it was pretty cool that the guys are coming back, especialit's j. >> will we see any of that?

>> there was an alumni game a couple weeks ago, and it got really rough. it was toronto in detroit and it got trippy. >> we might see some of that. >> we can't remember. we wore helmets. >> who are some of the players you're most excited to see on the ice? >> i like them all. i've had a lot of good fun with them and we put up a flyers fantasy camp in august. it will be our third year. i've had david poulin come in this year. danny beard, brad marsh, too. >> if you wanted to get your name penned in on that roster -- >> i've got eight great guys that really blend in. i'll have 65 guys at the camp, it's so much fun. they all interact well with the people. as brad said, it's a
