savannah continues on maternity leave. we have a lot to get to. potential explosive, yet unverified reports, that the russian government has compromising information about donald trump. the information was included in briefing materials, and it was based on separate, longer document paid for by political operatives and opponents of mr. trump. which included unsubstantiated allegations of sexual activities by him in russia. we're going to talk to mr. trump's chief of staff in a moment. first, our political team has complete coverage, beginning with nbc's andrea mitchell. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. only nine days before he takes the oath of office, and hours before his first news conference in six months, donald trump is dealing with that potential bomb shell about russia, which he is calling a political witch hunt. >> reporter: two u.s. officials tell nbc news briefing materials prepared for both the

president-elect and president obama included information concerning potentially damaging, but unverified allegations, about donald trump's dealings with russia. information initially circulated among trump's republican opponents and passed to u.s. intelligence agencies. the officials would not say whether the fbi was actively investigating the information. the president-elect tweeting in capital letters, fake news. a total political witch hunt. nbc's lester holt in an exclusive interview asked president obama about it. >> i ordered a report about russia's involvement in the hacking of the dnc and passing on that information to wikileaks because i felt it was important now that the election was over, for everybody to understand exactly what happened in order to prevent it from happening again. in order to make sure we're working effectively with our allies so that misinformation and cyber attacks don't end up

undermining democratic structures around the world. >> reporter: the president-elect's spokesman, spicer, calling the allegation pathetic. while kellyanne conway told seth meyers trump was never briefed on the allegation. >> they appended two pages to the bottom of the intelligence -- >> i believe it said they did brief him. >> he is not aware of it. >> that concerns me. >> reporter: earlier, james comey would not say whether his investigation investigated possible contacts between the trump campaign and the russian government. >> i would never comment on investigations, whether we have one or not, in an open forum like this. >> reporter: surprising one senator, since comey broke precedent, speaking volumes about the clinton e-mail investigation. >> the irony of that statement, i cannot avoid. >> reporter: all this while trump's nominee nor secretary of

state, exxonmobil ceo rex till erms -- tillerson will have his confirmation meeting today. he said, our nato allies are right to be alarmed at a resurgent russia. democrats have questions. >> we understand he was a business person doing business in russia. can he now all of a sudden change and be interested in the foreign policy issues, american values, and not be so concerned about making mr. putin happy? >> and a major question for donald trump once he becomes president, will he continue the investigations into russian intelligence and interference in the american election, or will he cancel the sanctions that president obama ordered against vladimir putin? matt and meredith, back to you. >> andrea, thank you very much.

reince priebus will serve as president-elect trump's chief of staff. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, matt. >> let me ask you straight ahead, during that intelligence briefing last week at trump tower with the head of the fbi, the cia, dni and nsa, was mr. trump briefed on the contents of this and the two-page summary of that information? >> i'll tell you this, i was in the room, matt. the first i heard of any of these wild accusations was when someone printed it off of the buzzfeed website which, by the way, buzzfeed themselves said it is not even credible. what i can tell you is that this is not an intelligence document. this is some retired agent somewhere out in the world that was doing opposition research on donald trump during the campaign. and i looked into a couple of these accusations. so i brought one of the accusations was that michael cohen, who works in the trump

organization, went to prague to meet with some russian agent. the guy has never been to prague in his life. i told him to give me his passport. i looked through the passport, matt. he's never been to prague. in fact, it was later last evening verified that he was actually in california. >> so are you saying -- >> look -- >> -- the heads of the foreign intelligence agencies would take the time to brief the president and perhaps give a summary of this information to the president-elect if they thought there was a chance this was simply fake news? >> didn't happen. there are certain things i can't say and do say, but what i can tell you is that i was there. these crazy accusations, these -- that i just talked about were never discussed. >> reince, have you read the full report, the 35 pages? >> i've read most of it. but what i can tell you is that

even "new york times" last night refused to public this document, which is not an intelligence document. keep in mind, this is some retired guy somewhere out in the world acting like ian fleming, apparently trying to maybe write a fiction novel. i don't know what he is doing. >> in the past, he has been a credible source. although in this case -- >> in the past, how do you know that? >> he is said to have gotten information from other sources who cannot be verified within russia. >> someone in the past who has been a source, somewhere in something that you don't know about is somehow now attached to this document that not even the "new york times" will publish. which bases its entire report on a meeting in prague that never happened. the guy has never been to prague. here we are on the "today" show, w one of the greatest morning shows in america, talking about stupidity. actually, offensive crap that we shouldn't be talking about.

document. an intelligence document doesn't have handwritten page numbers on the corner. it's not -- and the other thing i can tell you is if this was actually something our intelligence community believed in, it would have been published for the public, and the rest of the report would have been available to the public. obviously, it wasn't credible enough for them to actually put in a document for the public to see. >> the timing of this, reince, comes on the -- came on the eve of this news conference that -- this long-awaited news conference from president-elect trump today. will he address this at the head of that news conference? >> i mean, it might come up, but i would imagine his answers are going to be similar to what you heard me say. which is, honestly, guys, if the thing is based on a meeting in prague, when the guy that was supposed to be meeting was never in prague his entire life -- it is verifiable. the news media is -- this is going to be decided whether he was in prague or not. he's never been to prague in his life. it's been reported he was in

priebus said, called it total garbage. agrees with mr. trump's assessment that it is fake news. this goes to the voracity of a source and information, credibility of information. what are your sources telling you? >> well, i do think it makes sense this morning to drive under a caution flag and not race ahead of the facts. here's what we know. here's what we think. here's what we don't know. we know the russian government uses information to try to compromise people and influence our election process. that is what the declassified intelligence report that was published last friday said. it said the russian government was trying to meddle, trying to influence our policies, our political systems. he's wh here's what we think. we think intelligence officials thought the information was important enough to pass on to the president, the president-elect and congressional leaders. they're in a catch 22, matt. if they don't give their boss a heads up that the allegations are out there, they can be accused of hiding the ball.

if it is out there, it is risks of leaks and misinformation and people start talking about it. of course, what we don't know, matt, at this hour, is whether any of the underlying allegations are accurate or fair. >> when it came to hacking the intelligence community had a very high sense of confidence about that information. do you think they feel the same way about this 35-page report? >> oh, i don't know how the intelligence community views the 35-page report. i think in their minds, in the minds of people whose job it is to guard the security of the united states, their view is that donald trump is going to be the 45th president of the united states. president obama said last night he was freely and fairly elected. he is going to take the oath of office. when a foreign intelligence service tries to use information, any information, to try to use leverage over our president, that affects all americans. that's not a democratic issue, republican issue. he is the president of all americans. and if some other government is going to try to use leverage over us, that becomes a national

rise up over this stationary front. as it does, it cools. the precipitation will fall. it is warm enough to start as rain, but because there is freezing, cold air down at the surface, as soon as that rain hits, it'll contact with the cold ground and become freezing rain. look at this. we start off friday from oklahoma to st. louis. it'll be rain south but from amarillo to st. louis, we're talking about ice. as we move into saturday, it stretches from texas all the way to washington, d.c. we can't give you how much, and it is going to be a timing issue. but we also see this lasting right on into sunday and maybe monday, from texas into st. louis. more ice, the accumulations still a little too early to tell you. but i will say this, we have the potential for power lines down, massive problems as far as air and road travel. so you want to put this on your radar. no pun intended. i think this could be a

>> i'll show the money. >> reporter: the man in the suit is 35-year-old enrique antonio gomez. the uber driver says he is forced to live stream the pictures, posted with the caption, omg 911 i need help. the driver says he was threatened with a bomb and forced to go to a bank. else is th estrada was in the bank and frightened. >> he was in there 45 minutes. one of the girls said the guy had a computer with wires. >> so he has a bomb. it's got a timer. >> reporter: they drive to world famous ocean drive, where shocked vacationers watch him pass out the money. >> so people just ran across the street to start grabbing money. i went over there. >> reporter: by then, authorities had been alerted. they took gomez and the uber driver into custody, closed off

>> you can do this. >> i enlisted joy bauer to help me pick my carnivore habits to the curb. >> you go vegetarian and it is bor boring, blah. >> it is only boring because you don't know about all of the options. >> reporter: at first, things got off to a shaky start. >> look at the steaks. >> close your eyes. don't do it. >> there are beans i've never heard of. those are just peas. nevermind. i've heard of peas. >> do you not look happy? >> i'm excited. this is great. >> reporter: joy opened my eyes to the wonders of a meat-free diet. >> the cool thing about tofu is it doesn't taste like anything, which means it takes on the flavor of whatever marinade you rub into it. i'm going to show you how to make cauliflower steak. >> steak. >> fake steak. >> okay. >> the reason i like quinoa is it cooks up just like rice. it is super easy to make, and it

has twice the amount of protein. >> quinoa and cauliflower. my idea of a fun night, let me tell you. >> reporter: we stopped by my favorite restaurant so she could show me how to eat out without pigging out. >> they have a short rib special. you're laughing because you've never tried it. short ribs are fantastic. >> i'm feeling bad for you. >> so am i. >> we'll get the lentil soup, quinoa salad and a side of roasted root vegetables. look at the volume of what you're about to have for dinner as your main compared to this. twice as much food and probably ten times more nutrition. >> pretty good. >> oh, i just got a text. oh, it's from jenna. tell craig to start tomorrow and order a cheeseburger. nice one, jenna. >> now that i was ready to veg out, i needed my family's seal of approval. >> take a bite of the broccoli.

awesome. i'm like the vegetable whisp whisperer. >> you are. >> competition over. you win because he's so cute. joy, good morning. >> morning. >> craig, good morning. i am a meat lover like craig. i feel his pain. how much pain are you going to put him through this month? >> first of all, you are surprising yourself because there are so many options. >> yeah. >> you're not hungry. >> no. >> you're feeling great and lost about five pounds. >> eating every four hours. probably just water weight at this point. but i have been pleasantly surprised that there are so many options out there. i haven't missed meat, though it is only a few days in. >> he's eating every four to five hours. he is choosing high quality starch and drinking ten cups of water a day. this is so packed with fiber and vitamins and materials that i need to make sure we're washing everything down. >> the cuts of water, it's a lot of time in the restaurant. no question about it.

tell me about fake steak. >> i needed to come up with something he could use a steak knife with. so i took -- walk over here. i took chunks of cauliflower and brushed both sides with olive oil, a little salt, a little pepper. stick it on there. i threw it on the grill. five minutes on each side. why don't you slather on barbecue sauce. >> i love barbecue sauce. >> grill it another three to four minutes on each side, and you get fake steak. cauliflower steak. >> scale of one to ten. you love steak, a ten. where does this fall? >> i'll taste it first. >> it is a perfect side. i would say to couple it with a great, big bowl of lentil soup, black bean soup, chili. >> that's really not bad. >> i'll take not bad. what do you think? >> it is not bad. very tasty. >> did you see how easy it was to whip it up? next up, we have tofu. every vegetarian -- skeptical a.

>> buy the extra firm tofu because it bakes up nicely when you do the cubes we'll do. you can get different consistencies. the silken is great for smoothies. i'll leave this for 30 minutes. reduced sodium soy sauce. a little bit of sesame oil, a little rice wine vinegar, honey over here. throw in that, a ginger and garlic. all you're going to do is marinate the tofu. bake it in the oven on 350 for about 40 minutes, flip it halfway through. this is packed with protein. you can put it in salads and pasta. what do you think? >> craig, what do you think? >> matt? >> taste this one. it is a buffalo wing. >> chicken, no chicken? >> that's better than the tofu i had the other day. >> you know what? you are in for a long, long

we are back with "today" style. during the cold, winter months, protecting your skin can be a challenge. here with new treatments to banish your winter skin blues, dr. deborah. >> good morning. >> what is the one thing we should be doing every day? >> it is a key to have a great diet and be healthy with your exercise, sleep and all those things. once you're doing that, everything else will work real well for you. >> start with food. what's the saying, you are what you eat. there are good foods and bad. these are the good ones, correct? >> yes. avocadoes are great. use it topically on your hands to create an oil to hydrate it. they contain lots of great fats. tomatoes are antioxidants and help kill off the free radicals. you want lots of protein in your diet. eggs are really good for you because of the protein. they help with collagen and elast elastin. green tea is great. >> what are no-noes?

>> these are the foods that are high in carbohydrates or refined sugars. white flour. >> bad for your skin. >> high glycemic index creates breakouts and your skin never looks great. skin that looks like the winter. you don't have the glow and your skin is not looking its best. >> a lot of over the counter products, which we love. and the hottest one now has to do with treating acne, right? >> yes. it is fantastic. differi differin has just become available over the counter. great for acne patients and the patients wanting to get rid of fine lines. its things to get rid of the lines. >> you can apply it for the whole face? >> use it sparingly, can be irritating to the skin. >> what if you need a boost? >> if you want a boost and the skin is dry and dull, i love the

hyaluronic acid products. creams, lotions and gels are really fantastic. they have a thin, slippery effect. you can feel how nice they feel on your skin. they help to absorb water. they contain lots of hyaluronic acid. it is a sugar and absorbs water into your skin. >> i use this one, a cool effect in the morning. feels good. >> exactly. >> let's get to the guinea pigs. you're looking nervous here. you want a more aggressive treatment, head to your dermatologist's office. >> our patient has been complaining about some discoloration on her skin. and some brown spots. she'd like to lighten them up. we discussed a chemical peel, great for improving that. we're going to grab some of this right here. >> her husband is a little nervous about this. worried about what is going to happen. >> we're going to apply a peel solution on to her skin. it has a little bit of a tingling/burning sensation. >> is it burning? >> no. >> okay. >> not yet. >> we apply this on to the face.

the face will then be a tiny red, maybe a little dry and irritated from the peeling solution. it'll take off some of these brown spots and give her a more hydrated, more radiant look. >> how long will it take? >> three to four days and then the peel will come off and her skin will look better. thank you. >> you don't need it. you look great. kerry >> this is laser. we're going to apply some laser googles on to carrie, who was complaining about sun damage on her skin. she has brown discoloration and feels her face looks flat and dull. we are going to apply some goggles on to her. >> why would you do this over the peel? >> this one stimulates collagen and helps to boost up collagen so the collagen is getting rid of more fine lines. it also will give a different type of peel. instead of a chemical

exfoliation, it does it mechanically. for this machine, we turn on the machine. we're going to turn this on and treat her with the laser. and the laser will create a tingling/burning sensation. the machine is having a little bit of -- there we go. >> how long do you do this for? >> for about 10 minutes on the face. >> how many applications do you need? >> you need about one every other month. when we do this, she will feel a tingling or a stinging sensation. we can take those off. three to five days later, she'll feel a sandpaper sensation to the skin. >> we've run out of time. get rid of belly fat, which was the thing i wanted to talk about but we don't have time. >> sculpture. up next, make way for new apps. the best digital downloads to transform your life in 2017. first, this is "today" on nbc.

you can't remember them all but it is important you have a password for everything. e-mail, amazon, all the different services you do. >> different passwords. >> this is giving you one place where you create a master password that only you know for all the services. you can put credit cards and other things you want to store in there. >> the app has been around a while but you want people to get it. is it secure? if someone gets this, they have the keys to the kingdom. >> heavy encryption. i use it for myself. when i log into gmail or anything else, i do it in one click and don't remember anything. >> second one is blue mail. what is it? >> no one loves their e-mail, matt. everybody can't stand it. this helps declutter the mail. it groups your mail into different categories or what they call, you know -- like for family, work, personal, unified. i can see all my different inboxes. if i have multiple e-mail

accounts or multiple things, i can get all of that in one view. really simple to use. i love that i can mark things for later, come back to them and archive them for later and set reminders. >> all right. the next one you want to talk about is strava. >> this is the social network for athletes. a lot of people are working out and looking for goals for fitness. this is a social network that'll help whether you're a weekend warrior or training for the olympics. you'll show what you're doing, share that and track and analyze your work. heavy on stats. distance, elevation, calories burned. i love one feature they have in the premium service called beac beacon, which tracks you in real time. if you're jogging and want your family to know where you are, that's a great feature to have. >> best time of the football season. say you're in a sports bar and the game is on the monitor. this next app can help you hear the game. >> yes. any muted tv. if you're in a hospital, bar, airport, any muted tv, take the app, open the camera and take a picture. basically, you're scanning the

i actually had a very specific situation where i met with this kind of gruff, abrasive man over the telephone. we were going to actually have a contact in person. i researched out to his assistant ahead of time and said, can you tell me about him? she said, he is into bass fishing. i don't know if that'll help. i made the effort to do research, watched bass masters and kind of wove that into the conversation. he just lit up. it really changed the whole experience. it made everything else go smoother. >> i think in interviews, one of the things that i've learned doing this job is that it is good to be prepared but you have to listen. >> absolutely. >> to the person that is either interviewing you or you're interviewing. >> what is their mood? are they under the weather, upbeat, seem like they'll be more focused on the practical, tactical nature of the conversation or looking for your style, your personality and your condoleezza ri charisma? >> match the tone.
