dismantling obamacare. the u.s. senate takes the first step in the quest to repeal the affordable care act. >> another day of grilling. a look at the hearings underway right now to confirm several of president elect trump's cabinet picks. >> thank you barrack. >> plus the first lady's thank you notes to her husband in her final appearance on the tonight show. >> nbc 10 breaking news. >> breaking news this morning a water mane break sent water into the streets in one philadelphia neighborhood in the city's strawberry mansion neighborhood to be specific. let's get you right out to nbc 10's matt live at the scene. you got there not long ago. tell us what you're seeing. >> right i was told by the water department that the water was

shut off just about 15 minutes ago but you can see the hole in the ground here and from what we have been hearing the water was spraying into the air a good two stories from the air. we saw a picture from the water department spokesperson that says this was quite serious initially. you can see the water is turned off. it was turned off about 15 minutes ago there is now a hole in the street. we're on the 3400 block here in the strawberry mansion neighborhood where i have been told i have just been talking with the water department and the water on this block has been turned off. you're seeing video. a little bit of a better vantage point of what is going on from above and the only real effect at this point is the water is turned off on this block. the water department is going to be back out here to assess the damage and figure out what happened here but everything is

stra starting to wrap up. now just a giant hole in the ground behind me. >> now to an update on the story we have been following for days. the sinkhole. it could take several more days for crews to repair water and gas lines there. nearby homes have been without those services since sunday when the sinkhole opened up and swallows two cars. >> well, a few minutes after 11:00 on your thursday morning and it's feeling a little bit more like april today than january. temperatures are well above average as we take a live look right now and it's breezy outside too. >> take a look at this. mild conditions at the shore as well. a live look from our camera in cape may and we have live team coverage of this unseasonably warm weather. we begin with nbc 10's first alert meteorologist. it's hard to believe this is january. spring-like temperatures for

sure. >> that's right. we do have temperatures well above normal. usually this time of the year, this day in particular tends to be one of the colder days in january. today, in fact, we're seeing one of the warmer days in january. i have to point out satellite and radar image, 11:03:00 a.m. we do see light showers moving through the region. not going to be a wash out. just not totally dry. a few passing showers at best. a live look outside you can see the cam ras shaking the winds are starting to increase. wind gusts today could top out at about 25 miles per hour. we're dry now in philadelphia but notice we are seeing clouds develop. current temperature, 61 degrees. now the record for today 72 degrees i do not think we'll get there however it's still going to be a very pleasant warm day nonetheless. current wind speed 21 miles per hour and wind gusts 29 miles per hour. so neighborhoods right now in philadelph

philadelphia. 61. port richmond 52. tipping it in the low 60s. and currently at 62 degrees. if you look at the bottom of your screen you'll see your local neighborhood forecast. out the door forecast right now we're going to see temperatures starting to dip into the 50s after 5:00 p.m. so 6:00 p.m. we're seeing 59 degrees. partly cloudy skies. partly cloudy skies for tonight but we're still trending rather warm. that's going to be the story across the entire region. 2:00 p.m. 59 degrees for the pa suburbs and keeping it in the 50s at 6:00 p.m. and we even have a warm evening and a warm night in the forecast. overnight loes i'm expecting mainly in the 40s. cloudy skies right now with passing showers. 59 degrees and 55 at 6:00 p.m. and for the jersey shore we're seeing temperatures in the mid 50s at 6:00 p.m. and mid to upper 50s by 10:00 p.m. so certainly a warm stretch right now. that's pretty much the story but we do have a major cool down

up, senator bob casey from pennsylvania talked about how some people might be forced to work longer hours to pay their premiums. >> in a word this was a plan for ta task. >> and damage done to middle class families. >> used examples of how obamacare. she already works two jobs and doesn't make enough to pay her premium. as of now no replacement plan has been announced. it's 11:07 and three people are in the hospital after this crash in philadelphia's neighborhood. around 7:30 this morning. we're working to learn the victims conditions at this time. they say he hid a detectives unmarked car just after 1:00 this morning and then took off.

the driver is charged with driving under the influence. the teenagers are in custody after saying they committed three separate robberies minutes apart. and arrest them in that neighborhood. this search is on through two men that used a gun to force their way into a port richmond home and steal $15,000. investigators say the men knocked on the victim's door on memphis street yesterday and when the woman answered the man barged in, ran upstairs, took the cash, ran off and no one was hurt. philadelphia police have just released this new video as they search for a thief. the man you say there. authority sas he stole from an office inside of a hotel on 18th street back on december 3rd. the deceased took $700 and several electronic devices from

that office. now this surveillance video shows the suspected carjacker that tried to steal several cars yesterday before being shot by one of the car owners. police say he failed to steal a van, a white car and a service truck but then the owner of the white car that was a licensed gun owner went after him with two nearby teenagers. >> he tried to get into his car so i ended up just tackling him and bringing him to the ground. >> that's one of the teenagers that held the suspect down. he was trying to get up and the car owner shot the suspect in the leg. authorities say charges are pending. >> all right it's about 10 minutes after 11:00 on your thursday morning. let's check in with jessica. what do you see on the roads this morning. >> we're seeing an accident seen here on the vine tree expressway right around our cameras at broad street. now it's over into the right

this is a live look at the hearing happening now on capitol hill. he will be the first career military officer to serve as defense secretary in more than 50 years. >> also confirmation hearings are taking place for the nominee for cia director congressman mike pompeo. this say live look at the senate intelligence committee as they question him right now. a third confirmation hearing is also underway at capitol hill. this is a live look at the hearing for hud secretary, dr. ben carson. carson is a retired neurosurgeon that ran for the republican nominee. corey booker opposed senator jeff sessions nomination yesterday saying he's unfit to serve as attorney general. he was the first senator to testify against the colleague's nomination criticizing him for alleged racism.

joining forces to help some adorable pets find a new home. allison is the community outreach operator for paws which is philadelphia animal welfare society and you brought an adorable little dog with us. >> i have. >> yes it s. paris is about five or six months old.

>> tell us about her. >> paris was surrendered with her brother prince. their owner became too sick to care for them. they have only been with paws about three days but they are both super loving. she was perfect in the car. so i think that she would be a great companion for sure. >> really good lady. >> are you trying to adopt them out together. >> not necessarily. they just came in together so and they're good with other dogs since they lived together at one point. >> she is a terrier mix. some are saying pit bull. rat terrier, some kind of fun shelter mix. >> well the event tomorrow where people can meet paris is at a fun location. >> it is. so the event is happening on saturday at the fair mount in brewery town and it's an apartment complex that you're

a great day to get outside. look now nice that looks. temperatures are well, well, well above average this morning we have live team coverage of this. temperatures will be well above normal for this time of the year but a story that we do have going on right now will be the current wind.

23 miles per hour wind speed and 15 for philadelphia and 18 miles per hour wind speed in atlantic city so a little strong right now and you can see the flag right now waving around because the wind speed and wind gusts range between 20 and 25 miles per hour. so keep that in mind. current temperatures right now are warm. philadelphia 61 degrees. normal high is 39 degrees for this time of the year for this day. the record high 72. mount holly at 63 degrees. allentown at 52 and coatsville at 57 degrees but a major change in the forecast because by tomorrow we start to track a cold front moving into the area so temperatures dip into the 40s and 30s by saturday and by the afternoon on saturday we'll start to track some light snow moving into the area and possibly a wintry mix. we go from 60s today to 30s on

those vehicles could be stuck there for awhile because the snow is not expected to melt for days. >> members of the miami heat basketball team are a little shaken up today but overall okay after their plane slid on a runway in milwaukee. several other flights were cancelled at the airport last night because of icy conditions. >> we have new video of a water main break in philadelphia's strawberry mansion neighborhood that sent water shooting well into the air. this is cell phone video from clearfield street. the break happened before 10:30 this morning. crew versus turned off the water in the area and there's no word yet on how many homes have been effected. >> in baltimore officials have found the body of one child and five other children are presumed dead after a house collapsed during a fire early this morning. a woman and three other children were able to escape with injuries and now we have learned maryland congressman says the mother of the children is one of his staffers. >> and this is just in, new jersey governor chris christie has lost his appeal in

connection with the bridgegate scandal. a new jersey judge just overturned the probable cause for investigating the governor for misconduct. the complaint accuses christie of failing to act to reopen the lanes to the george washington bridge closed as political payback. the judge did not dismiss the complaint as he expected but instead ordered the municipal court to hold a new hearing. they were convicted in the case last year. in the transition to president elect donald trump, mr. trump's connection with russia is being scrutinized amid reports that russia had confer mizing information about him. >> mrs. universe, moscow, november 2013. the trip donald trump describes as fantastic. but trump's hopes for a trump tower moscow have never gotten off the ground. >> i have no dealings with

russia, have no deals in russia. >> that doesn't mean he hasn't tried. donald trump's connection to moscow traces back as far as 1987. on the 4th of july independence day trump was touring moscow looking at sites for a hotel including several near red square. later that year trump met the then soviet president in washington. the trump organization told the moscow times trump was heading to russia again to discuss developing trump tower moscow. donald junior travelled to the city in 2008 according to records of the event. one month later the trump organization registered trump tower moscow.com. in 2013 trump brought the miss universe pageant to moscow. it would not be unusual to be a target of russia intelligence.

positions. >> american troops are rolling into poland today. u.s. army trucks and soldiers in camouflage began to cross this morning. about 3500 troops will be stationed there. the deployment is to reassure nato allies concerned about russia. russia says it perceives the move as a threat. >> new details in the deadly airport shooting in fort lauderdale. one of the victims that was killed is from dover. >> 69-year-old mary louis grew up in ohio but moved to dover. she was in the baggage area when the gunman opened fire killing five people and injuring six others. he remains behind bars. >> new video from florida shows how dangerous it can be to drive while distracted. video from inside the cab of a big rig shows the driver looking at his phone. he didn't notice the car pull in front of him until it was almost too late. he slammed on the breaks and his tractor-trailer ended up tumbling off an overpass in

tampa. the driver was okay. >> more driving danger on a colorado highway after a tire slides off of one car and crashes into an suv. this is video of the damaged suv at a salvage yard after the incident. the freak accident happened on interstate 25 north of denver. police say the tire came off of the car in the northbound lane and smacked into the windshield of the nissan that it hit as it was heading southbound. two people were hurt. >> there's a real life history lesson happening at a delaware county school. students there are virtual pen pals with young syrian refugees. every month they skype with each other. >> they talk about their favorite hobbies and food and most recently what each wanted for the new year but most importantly these local students are making a big difference in the refugees lives. >> you can leave those at your

and landed currently at 64 degrees. these temperatures are well above normal for this time of the year. doppler radar notice that we're seeing some light passing showers moving quickly through parts of chester county, delaware county, philadelphia county, montgomery as well but notice that they're moving very quickly toward the northeast so i don't expect them to hang on too long and hour by hour, in fact, shows you everything clearing very quickly so 11:30 a.m. you can see the showers may lead to the northwest corner of our region. everything clearing by 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. and we'll see partly cloudy skies. now your ten day on ten, lots to go over. temperatures for today will top out in the upper 60s. on friday temperatures into the 40s as the cold front starts to sweep on through. notice this on saturday, i have included a little bit of a wintry mix with that light snow. temperatures topping out in the 30s. that's about it. so we're going from 60s to 30s

on sunday it will be dry. mostly cloudy skies. 41 degrees. on monday we're seeing developing clouds there. 44. we do warm up by tuesday into wednesday. we're finally seeing some 50s. so a little bit of a warm up there. by thursday we could see some showers including wednesday and then on friday we're seeing mainly low 50s. so the big story right now would include that we do have temperatures for today in the 60s and then we have that major drop by saturday with that wintry mix so expect a much colder saturday in the forecast more nbc 10 news coming up after the break.
