had a bad feeling parking his car on north 60th street wednesday on philadelphia wednesday night. moments later he was fighting two armed men. nbc 10's brandon hudson talked about his military training helped save his life. >> i just know the bullet is out of me right now. i as we sat down with jason rivers, the iraq war veteran showed us where he was shot in the left hip. the bandages and pain aren't from military combat but the robbery outside his home two nights ago. philadelphia police say two men tried to steal his car. >> and i could tell by their body chemistry they were walking slow and i no something was about to happen. >> reporter: he was cleaning his car when the robbers confronted him. they fought in the middle of the street. he ran away as they shot at him and this happened right by the city surveillance camera. >> i pushed off and ran down the street. the reason for doing that because i knew -- >> reporter: rivers didn't want his mom to be a target. nbc 10 was there after the crime happened on north 60th street around 10:00 tuesday night. rivers says his military

training to remain calm saved his life. the veteran added this is his first problem since moving to west philadelphia three years ago. according to the philly police crime report web site, since december 29, four other reported robberies happened within three blocks of river's home. the most recent being three days ago. all of these crimes happened between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. as he recovers -- >> feels like somebody hit me with a sledgehammer. >> reporter: detectives look for the young men who took his wallet. in west philadelphia, brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. a violent night in philadelphia tonight. a total of eight people shot, two killed. a man was murdered standing next to his wife outside a bar on melrose street in the frankford section and a 19-year-old was killed in this cedar brooke area. hoping for vindication, the hillary clinton campaign is welcoming a watchdog review of how the justice department and fbi handled her e-mail

investigation. this review comes from the justice department's inspector general. it won't look at why no one was prosecuted but it will result in recommendations to the next attorney general that could range from policy changes to discipline. an emotional milestone marking the upcoming changing of the guard at the white house this afternoon. it was vice president biden's turn in the spotlight. surprised with an honor, he said, he truly was not expecting. >> this has been quite a ride. i. >> joe biden thought he was attending a farewell toast with the obamas until he saw whole biden clan -- family and friends -- gathered in the state dining room. >> the best vice president america has ever had, mr. joe biden. this also gives the internet one last chance to -- [ laughter ] -- talk about our bromance. >> the president sharing vintage biden anecdotes including examples of his gift of gab. >> when the pope visited joe was even kind enough to left me talk

[ laughter ] >> but the big surprise tonight for the man the president calls his brother. >> for the final time as president i am pleased to award our nation's highest civilian honor, the presidential medal of freedom. >> awarded with distinction, the first time mr. obama has done so. it was a moment that moved delaware's native son to tears. >> i can say i was part of -- part of the journey of a remarkable man who did remarkable things for this country. i don't deserve this. but i know it came from the president's heart. >> only three others have received the medal of honor with distinction -- pope john paul ii, president ronald reagan and general colin powell. friends of former congressman shaka fattah are waiting for word back from the white house tonight.

they are fattah. a group of former staffers sent a letter to the president laying out his case. fattah was sentenced to ten years in prison for stealing government and charity funds. he's due to report to prison later this month. nbc 10 reached out to the white house but we have not heard back. president obama is ending the policy that granted resid t residency to cubans that arrived in the united states without visas. the rule is known as wet foot dry foot. mr. obama says cuban nationals who now try to come into the u.s. illegally may be removed. the president says this change will bring more consistency to u.s. immigration policy. a warmer-than-normal thursday night for mid-january and we also had a full moon. the warm air, though, is headed out. the cold coming back. and with this constantly changing weather, it's hard to know how to dress when you head out the door. >> glenn hurricane schwartz will help us out with that. glenn? >> don't dress the way you did today. even though it be that cold first thing in the morning it

will be colder at the end of the day. the flag is starting to make turns. the wind changing, bringing in colder air. today we got up to 67, didn't break the record in philadelphia but wilmington and atlantic city both shattered the old record set in 1913. down to 55 now in philadelphia but still in the 60s throughout delaware and much of south jersey. that is extremely warm for this time of the night at this time of the year and the temperatures are going to keep going down and instead of going back up during the day it will go down even more. by 5:00 tomorrow 39 degrees and feeling like it's colder than that so with the planner you see the temperature doesn't change much during the day despite the sunshine. we're also going to have gusty winds making it feel colder. colder yet thursday night and then the chance of some snow on saturday. more on the timing of that coming up.

>> see you soon, glenn. an uber driver accused of beating up a passenger now faces charges. the university of pennsylvania police arrested the driver. we first told you about this story sunday night at 11:00. police say the driver, major fuller is his name, was arrested yesterday. over the holidays the passenger told us he requested an uber from university city to cherry hill but the driver refused to take him over the bridge and then attacked him. those were photographs from after the attack. there they are again. uber told us they removed fuller from the app. a war of words is bubbling up between city store owners and philadelphia's mayor. both were accusing the other of price gouging the cost of soda. >> my suspicious nature leaves me to believe they wanted to anger people and have a sticker shock. >> the mayor says some stores are charging more for drinks that aren't even covered under the soda tax. today the pennsylvania food merchants' association released a statement saying in part "the

mayor's regressive tax is gouging families and small businesses across philadelphia. working families and seniors living on fixed incomes aren't just being cranky, they are rightfully angry." the mayor also said tonight the money from the tax, which is going toward universal pre-k is more important than any complaints. tough times in delaware, governor jack markell laid out his budget and people in delaware face several tax hikes and cuts to services. the state has a $350 million deficit. one of the proposed tax hikes is on cigarettes. it could cost a dollar more a pack. another item is funding for paramedics. the governor says the state can no longer afford to partner with counties to provide the service. if you need to talk to someone about your unemployment benefits in pennsylvania, it may take a while. the average wait time in norristown is four to five hours. half of the call center employees have been laid off because the senate did not vote on a bill before their holiday

break. that bill would restore funding to the department of labor. >>. new details about what led to a standoff in montgomery county last week. we're told limerick township police were investigating a suspect for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl for the past four years. police say brian monica had a gun friday night inside his car and threatened to shoot. the swath team evacuated the entire neighborhood. seven hours later, monica surrendered and today he made his first court appearance on rape charges. chester county is welcoming a brand-new police force tonight. nbc 10 in landonberg for the inauguration of the southern chester county police department. it's the result of merging police forces. so far the new department has 21 officers. students at st. francis desales told the crowd they found inspiration in a year filled with news stories about police shootings. the students wanted to shine a light on the positive work

police do within the community so they made a documentary called "bridging the gap" a film about police and their communities. the film premiers tonight. the second-largest employer in new jersey is breathing a sigh of relief tonight. the air force picked joint base mcguire-dix-lakehurst to host its next generation of air refuelling tankers. the base will get 24 tankers. governor chris christie says today's decision by the air force is monumental for tens of thousands of military families. president-elect trump's choice for defense secretary cruised through the senate arms services committee. nominee james mattis appears to have support from both republicans and democrats. general mattis is in line to be the first career military officer to serve as defense secretary in more than a half century. atlantic city casinos finally have something to celebrate. for the first time in a decade, revenue was up for the entire year. boar gatta made the most money, golden nugget had the largest

increase and two of the five casinos posted a loss. internet gambling helped casinos rake in the cash. governor chris christie's number two wants his job. today lieutenant governor kim gaudagno made it official, she's running for governor. she will campaign against assemblyman jack chitte chitare. he announced he has cancer in his neck but he is making phone calls. here are the democrats running for governor. an assemblyman, a state assemblyman and phil murphy. the allentown school district voted to hire thomas parker at superintendent. he comes from a small school district in suburban detroit. he's the district's first minority superintendent. up next at 11:00, a huge shrine to donald trump? tonight they plan to have a

confronted a robbery suspect who he says broke into his house tuesday night. niko gonzalez said he fought with the man inside his home in vineland, he was able to restrain him even though he was stabbed in the drug l. >> and i had him pinned here holding the fence with one hand, pushing my body up against him so i had him pinned up against the fence. >> gonzalez says he was stabbed on his hip, hand and arm but he held the man down until police got there. police tell us the suspect, ramon nievez is behind bars tonight. the casinos bearing donald trump's name are closed in atlantic city but a museum could be coming to the jersey shore. >> nbc 10's drew smith spoke to an historian who plans to show and tell the stories of the trump era in a. c. >> reporter: the signs say "no trespassing" outside all the former trump-branded casinos but his name still looms large. >> he's not one of my favorite

people. >> reporter: among board walk visitors, the idea of a trump museum here is polarizing. >> i would like to see a "you're fired" statue with that face. it would be funny. >> reporter: for historians like levi fox the end of the age of trump in a. c. and the beginning of the trump white house is the perfect time to create an exhibit. >> people have sometimes very strong feelings on different sides but the idea behind this museum is that there's a space for everybody's story to be told. >> reporter: if this museum opens, it would be the only place in the city with trump's name on it that you could go inside since the trump taj mahal closed back in october. >> he gets businesses, gets investors to come in, then the next thing you know he files bankruptcy. >> reporter: president-elect trump's financial troubles would certainly play a role in this museum which just launched a web site today. organizers plan a non-partisan historical display. right now, they're looking for trump artifacts ranging from playing cards to beach towels. >> we're looking for those

tangible three dimensional items that people have that i think might be sitting in people's garages right now and they don't realize the potential historical impact. >> reporter: a chance to take in trump's jersey shore clear as the next chapter of presidential history is about to be written. in atlantic city, drew smith, nbc 10 news. a record-breaking day today with the warmth but if you refer it told, you're in luck. >> glen "hurricane" schwartz here to tell us when the cold will get here. glenn? >> this time tomorrow night you'll be feeling it. it won't be long lasting or as severe as what we saw last weekend. not even close. down to 55 in philadelphia, 60s in much of the rest of the area. the average high for this time of the year is only 40 degrees. and, yet, 55 at the airport but 61 at center city and society hill, 62 in pennsport and fox chase, even at this hour of the

night. but there's a cold front on the way. the warm air ahead of it, the northwest winds with the colder air behind it and those winds will be felt all day long tomorrow. and that's going to knock those temperatures down. the feels-like temperatures now in the upper 50s. by morning 41 in philadelphia, 33 in pottstown. so if it's not told when you get outside first thing, it will be colder later on during the day it won't warm up, it will get colder. certainly going to feel colder. by later tomorrow night if you're headed out friday night, it's cold. feeling like the 20s but not the single digits like last weekend. saturday all day it's feeling like it's in the 20s. now what about any kind of threat of snow? this is the front itself with a few sprinkles. no big deal. this is the system coming in for saturday. not well organized, not a lot of

moisture and happening during the daytime hours. with the temperatures marginal. so any snow as long as it's light would be likely to melt. look at the temperatures near or above freezing by midday and into the afternoon. still it would have to be a heavy burst to really stick on any kind of roads in the middle of the day with those marginal temperatures and remember how warm it is today and will be tomorrow. so i'm not too concerned about this yet. i wouldn't cancel any plans for saturday yet. but it will be chilly all day and then sunday not quite as bad. so here we go tonight. maybe a couple of showers with that one front. by tomorrow morning 36 in allentown, 37 quakertown. during the late morning temperatures not going up. it's a sunny day and it's not getting any better and then as we head through the weekend

a major development in the cost of epipens, the life saving medicine that can treat allergic reactions. cvs announced it will offer its own version at a much cheaper price. you may recall last year a pharmaceutical company raised the price from $100 to $600. it eventually offered its own generic version for half the price but cvs says its version

will sell for just $110 per two-pack. in montgomery county dozens of students, faculty and parents spent the day giving back in honor of the upcoming martin luther king, jr., holiday. nbc 10 was in abington where volunteers put together care packages full of warm clothes and other goodies to benefit families in need. at 11:00, the best high school football players in the tri-state, they were honored tonight in drexel hill. the pennsylvania maxwell football club held its mini max high school awards dinner, 60 players walked away with these beautiful trophies recognized for their hard work on and off the football field. maybe some future eagles there, john. >> let's hope so. an nfl team is moving. we'll tell you how it affects the eagles and when will joel inbee be resting? that's next. the door of bassett quality was there.
