breaking overnight. a deadly plane crash with dozens killed. many on the ground as rescuers continue to assess the damage. massive ice storm across the plains and midwest has already claimed five lives. states of emergency declared in multiple states. the president-elect launches attacks over the weekend on foreign leaders, civil rights icahns and signals health insurance for everybody. after 146 years the greatest show on earth is no more. and remembering martin luther king jr.'s message. today more important than ever. a turkish airlines crashed this morning. at least 37 people are dead after the boeing 747 crashed into more than 20 houses by the airport. now we're live in locndon with all the very latest. ali, what have you been hearing about it? >> reporter: a turkish jet crashed killing at least 37 people, most of them residents of a village struck by the boeing 737. it was trying to land in dense fog. it was supposed to make a stop over near the capital on its way from hong kong to istanbul. it crashed when trying to land in poor advice is ability. devastating pictures show that the plane plowed for a few hundred yards through the village crushing and smashing pieces, 15 homes and the remains lay broken on top of smashed houses.

the crash happened about 7:30 local time in the morning so most people were probably in their homes. there's about 1,000 rescue workers on the site trying to figure out the exact cause of the damage. authorities say there was fog but it wasn't critical and they're still searching for survivors and bodies. back to you, a man. >> thank you very much for that. at least five people have died in the midwest and great plains as those people get pummeled with an ice storm. icy conditions led to the fatalities. three deaths in missouri, one in oklahoma and another in kansas. one close call was caught on a dashboard camera. a semiappears to hydroplane crossing over the highway divider and nearly crashing into the trooper's car. in this instant no one was hurt. two other semitrucks slammed into each other and exploded into flames in nebraska.

fortunately no one was injured in that crash. the game between the chiefs and steelers were delayed. some fans might not have noticed as power lines were sparking and power flashes could be seen in the dallas areas. tens of thousands of americans remain without power. millions under winter weather advisories as the storm heads north. let's get an update on that with nbc meteorologist bonnie snyder tracking this. >> ayman and gigi, we have the highest amounts, about an inch of ice coating roads into much ever kansas, but as we go forward we'll be watching that threat to spread to parts of the up mer midwest. you can see iowa strongly affected as well as parts of michigan and wisconsin. elsewhere across the country we're looking at a warm surge of air in the southeast. temperatures tied a record in atlanta. we're looking at the warmup

spreading to the east. >> thank you very much for that, bonnie. we're now just four days away from inauguration and the preparations are already underway withstand-ins for the president-elect and incoming vice president mike pence putting on a full dress rehearsal. as the nation waits with baited breath for the 45th president. it's another spat that's involving the president-elect that is getting the lion's share of attention this morning after trump insinuated that cia chief john brennan could be the person leaking unsubstantiated allegations involving trump and russia to the media. trump tweeting brennan, quote, really couldn't do much worse. just look at syria, red line, crimea, and the buildup of russian nukes. not good. was this the leaker of fake news? now those posts were in response to brennan's recent criticism. take a listen.

>> what i think mr. trump has to understand is that this is more than being about him, it's about the united states and the national security, and he has to make sure that now that he's going to have the opportunity to do something for national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he is going to have tremendous responsibility to make sure that u.s. national security interests are protected and are advanced. >> that comes as the president-elect concedes that those newly imposed sanctions against russia could be removed when he takes office making the news in his first u.k. interview since being elected president. trump reiterated that in an interview to the wall street journal. if you get along and if russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody is doing really great things. trump's war of words with john lewis after he said he doesn't consider trump to be a legitimate president following russian interference in the election. donald trump reacted this weekend calling lewis, quote, particularly his district,

quote, in horrible shape, crime infested and said that the civil rights legend is all talk and no action. the congressman's office has not reacted to trump's post. while he has canceled a previously planned trip to d.c., congressman lewis does have a speaking engagement this morning celebrating martin luther king day. justin ammosh posted simply, dude, just stop. however, vice president mike pence questioned lewis's choice of words. >> for someone to use his stature, to use terms like this is not a legitimate president, it's just -- it's just deeply disappointing to me. i hope he reconsiders it. >> meanwhile, across the country, thousands of americans spent the weekend making their voices heard taking to the streets alongside their representatives including several high profile senators. from neighboring new jersey to upstate new york, san francisco all the way to michigan, massive rallies sought to turn back gop

efforts to do away with the president's signature achievement. while congressional representatives are seeing eye to eye on how to get it done. trump is telling the administration how he will have insurance for everybody in obamacare. he said they would expect to have great health care. it will be in a much simplified form, much less expensive. they'll be beautifully covered. i don't want single payer. what i do want is to take care of people. in his final network television interview president obama was bound to make news while he did speaking to "60 minutes." the president said it was his decision to have the u.s. abstain from that controversial u.n. resolution. he also said relations with israel have never waivered. >> was it your decision to abstain? >> yes, ultimately. >> why did you feel like you had to do that? >> well, first of all, steve, i

a 36 yard completion where they managed to keep his feet in backgrounds. the packers move on to face the atlanta falcons in the nbc championship game next week. in kansas city the game was postponed until last night while the city and fans dodged a massive ice storm. inside the arrowhead stadium, the chiefs scored the only touchdown of the game but a failed two-point conversion to tie it up gave the steelers the win and the trip to new england. we have some new video of power flashes in dodge city, kansas, where power lines are down and the entire city has gone nearly pitch black. let's check back with meteorologist bonnie schneider on this. >> gigi, dodge city felt the brunt of this storm. we had thunder at the same time. ice is shifting to the upper midwest. we'll be watching for it to work its way away from kansas.

fast forwarding today. events to mark martin luther king jr. day are being held around the nation. in the nation's capitol a wreath laying ceremony will take place at the memorial honoring the slain civil rights activist. the president and first lady will participate in a service project in honor of martin luther king jr. day. and president obama will also welcome the chicago cubs to the white house to celebrate their world series win. stock markets in this country are closed for the martin luther king jr. holiday, but overseas in davos, switzerland, the world's wealthiest people are gathering for the forum. topic number one is donald trump. karen ctso is here. >> donald trump is not here but he will dominate the agenda as the elite in davos will consider what his presidency means for
