that may be the big game. >> patriots fans may have having to say about that. let's start with the weather and the lengthy ice storm creating dangerous conditions across the plains and midwest. morgan radford is in an icy omaha, nebraska. good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. 45,000 americans waking up without power, after a deadly ice storm pummeled the midwest. now, people here warned against icy roads that left five dead and millions scrambling to recover. this morning, crippling ice. coating much of the nation's midsection. entire neighborhoods frozen over. slick roads now disaster zones. with at least five fatalities across three states. and it's not over yet. in nebraska -- >> it's slick right here. >> reporter: a fiery crash on i-80, engulfed two semi trucks in flames.

police say no one was injured. seat belts helped save the driv drivers' lives. in oklahoma, towns transformed into icicle cities. power lines catching fire as ice melts. in missouri -- >> chiefs. >> the ice storm, forcing the nfl to delay the steelers/chiefs playoff game by seven hours in kansas city. and in kansas, you can see mother nature's wrath on the roads. this tractor-trailer almost slamming into a patrol car. the terrifying moments caught on dash cam video. the officer unharmed. what do you do? >> prepare. that's all you can do. >> stock up and stay inside when the weather's harsh. >> reporter: this woman was bagging grocery stories when the power went off in the

supermarket. >> they continued shopping. >> reporter: as power lines burst under the weight of the ice. 39 million americans are still under winter advisories. here in omaha, we're under an ice storm warning until tomorrow. authorities say to assume that the roads are still icy, deadly and dangerous, especially if you have to head out this monday morning. >> the storm that won't go away. morgan radford, thanks. the question is, when we see some relief? dave price is in for al. good to see you. >> good to see you, too. the relief may be slow in coming in some parts to the area. this storm stretches 1,800 to 2,000 miles. all the way from new mexico. and before all is said and done, it will wind up in interior sections of new england. let's talk about exactly what's going on as we speak. this is where we see the ice. nebraska, into iowa and pushing towards illinois.

so, the areas we're most concerned about is right where we see the temperature touching above or below the freezing mark. dodge city, omaha, into waterloo and chicago. dodge city saw three-quarters of an inch of ice. how much more will we get? and where will it wind up? most areas getting a tenth and a quarter inch of ice. that's bad news for anyone traveling. it will be a rough go for 36 hours, as this storm continues to move towards the east. we'll see you in a couple of minutes for a full weather forecast. now, back to both of you. >> thank you very much. the weather was likely the factor in a plane crash in kyrgystan overnight. a cargo jet slammed into a village near the main operate, killing people in the plane and on the ground. bill neely has the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. this happened in the dark while many people were sleeping in a tiny village in the countryside in the middle of terrible winter

weather conditions. and people there are asking why on earth was this plane cleared to land? minutes after the crash and the fires in the snow, mark the impact part of a plane ripped apart. fire crews struggling in the dark. chunks of the aircraft embedded in houses. first light revealed the village was almost gone. the cargo plane had plowed through it. dozens were killed including whole families, many children. the survivors distraught. at one end of the village, the plane's tail. at the other, the severed cockpit. the five crew members dead. the plane left hong kong with cargo for istanbul and turkey and was due to stop at kyrgystan's capital. it hit the ground around 7:30 local time. aerial video shows the path the plane cut through the village.

the fuselage still smoking. they were able to carry some survivors out. but most people didn't stand a chance. asleep when the plane hit. there was freezing fog when it came down. and questions afterwards. why was the plane allowed to land? he asks, in such thick fog. people here say either the pilot or air traffic control was negligent. but authorities claim 11 planes had landed safely earlier. whatever the cause, the villagers are traumatized. the country is in mourning. search teams are confident the plane's flight recorders will revel why it crashed short of the runway, with such fatal results. of the 12 people injured in the hospital, six are children. and the authorities now say the cause of the crash appears to be pilot error. willie? tamron? >> bill neely, thank you.

now, to a historic week in washington, as the countdown to donald trump's inauguration reaches just four days. this morning, fellow democrats are rallying around civil rights icon, representative john lewis, after trump labeled him all-talk, no action. trump's comments came on twitter, after lewis told chuck todd he doesn't see trump as a legitimate president because of russia's interference in the election. >> a dress rehearsal was held sunday, complete with marching bands and a walk down pennsylvania avenue to practice the friday. >> and mr. trump's inaugural committee has announced the headlines for a welcome celebration concert. toby keith, three doors down and lee greenwood. it will be held thursday at the lincoln memorial and is open to the public. in a moment, we'll talk about it all with sean spicer, incoming press secretary. but first, kristen welker is at trump tower. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to

you. just four days until the inauguration. president-elect donald trump is making waves again for mu comments about health care, the intelligence community and as you said, civil rights icon congressman john lewis. just days before his inauguration, president-elect donald trump is offering new details about a key campaign promise, repealing obamacare. the president-elect said he is close to unveiling his own health care proposal, to provide insurance for everybody. mr. trump refused to provide specifics, saying his plan would come in a simplify form, much better. the comments sure to rise eyebrows by democrats and republicans. this as mr. trump faces fallout over his clash with civil rights icon john lewis, who said this to nbc's chuck todd. >> i don't see the president-elect as a legitimate president. >> reporter: on twitter, mr. trump accusing lewis of being all talk, talk, talk, no

action or results. sad. lewis, a freedom fighter who was beaten by state troopers while marching for voting rights in selma, alabama, 50 years ago, was pressed on his position. but didn't back down. >> that's going to send a big message to a lot of people in this country. that you don't believe he's a legitimate president. >> i think there was a conspiracy on the part of the russians and others. to help him get elected. that's not right. >> reporter: democrats sent out fund-raising e-mails over the flap. and with reversals over the weekend, more than 20 democratic lawmakers say they will join lewis in boycotting the inauguration. vice president-elect mike pence, firing back. >> to hear john lewis, a man that i served with, that i respect, to question the legitimacy of the election, was deeply disappointing to me. >> reporter: also this morning, mounting questions about russia. after mr. trump's national security adviser, michael flynn,

contacted the ambassador on the day mr. obama announced new sanctions. trump's incoming chief of staff saying flynn never discussed policy matters. >> there was no challenge of policy with the ambassador? >> none. >> reporter: the cia director warned him on russia. >> i don't think he has a full appreciation of russian capabilities, russia's intentions and actions that they are undertaking in many parts of the world. >> reporter: trump teeing off on twitter. oh, really? couldn't do much worse. even accusing brennan of being behind leaks of unsubstantiated information about him. all this as president obama weighed in on russia in his final tv interview. >> i have been concerned about the degree to which in some circles, you've seen people suggest that vladimir putin has more credibility than the u.s.

government. >> reporter: and in a recent interview, president-elect trump indicated he may be open to resetting relations with china. now, the chinese foreign ministry pushing back, warning him about pushing his back on the one china policy, the long-standing policy that recognizes taiwan as a part of china. meanwhile, there had been talk about the president-elect spending part of this martin luther king holiday in washington, d.c. we have learned that he is going to stay here in new york at trump tower. as confirmation hearings for more of his nominees get under way tomorrow. willie? tamron? >> kristen welker, thank you very much. let's bring in sean spicer the incoming white house press secretary. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, guys. >> i want to start with "the washington post" interview. donald trump talking about one of his big campaign promises, to relegal and replace obamacare. he said in this interview it's farther along than people realize. it's very much formulated.

he said, quote, we're going to have insurance for everybody. but later, he says, i don't want single-payer. isn't insurance for everybody by definition single-payer? >> he said in "the washington post" article, willie, his goal was to get insurance for everybody. through marketplace solutions, by bringing costs down, allowing competition over state lines. there's a lot of ways to bring the cost and access to health ware way down, to insure that people get additional plans to choose from, more doctors in the system, and health care at a much cheaper option than it is currently, which again i think is better for the consumer because it increases access and increases options to care. at the same time, through that competition, marketplace access, will drive the cost down. >> isn't this an expansion of government health care, which has been against republican orthodoxy, i guess whatever, to have the government take over health care. doesn't it go further than

obamacare? >> no. i think what's missing right now is -- number one, if you look at what obamacare was supposed to do. it is called the affordable care act. increase your plans. you weren't going to lose your doctor or your plan and costs were going to go down. marketplace after marketplace, we've seen plans leaving, in many cases, consumers are left with one option. the doctors that may have been part of the plan, are no longer part of the plan. they can't access the plan they used to have and the costs rise at a high level. the competition is sorely missing. we're not negotiating with drug manufacturers. we're not instilling competition to allow them to negotiate over state lines. there's a lot of things missing, that would drive the costs down. and the beautiful thing about someone like donald trump, he comes in from a successful business perspective. he knows how to negotiate great deals. he can use his negotiating skills to benefit the american people and give them a better health care system than they have. >> let's talk about the latest battle we've been reporting on between the president-elect and

congressman john lewis. the president-elect attacking john lewis' district, his service to this country. we're looking at four days to the run-up of the inauguration. was this the proper way to handle this? for the president-elect? >> tamron, i want to take it back a step, tamron. i think, congressman lewis started this, with your own chuck todd, by saying that the election was illegitimate and that president-elect trump was an illegitimate president. let's see where it started. you have an icon of voting and civil rights, claiming an election was illegitimate, when there's zero evidence of that. everybody has confirmed that the election was dually held. there was no tampering of anything. to see somebody of john lewis' stature, and iconic nature, who has worked to infranchise people and getting people involved in our voting systems and getting and talking about the integrity of our voting system, to go out when the candidate of his choice doesn't win, and try to talk

about the delimitization of the election is disappointing. and on a day like today, when we're celebrating or observing the birthday of martin luther king, the reason, today, president-elect trump will sit down with martin luther king iii and others, and have a conversation about voting, about bringing people in. the legacy of dr. king and how we pursue that in a trumped ed a administratied administrati administration. and some of the things that john lewis talked about, about the legacy of dr. king and the beauty of what he wanted to achieve. to see him go out and talk about the delegitimatization of an election is disappointed. >> we show that russia tried to interfere, which is the issue that congressman lewis took up. you talk about who started it, which would remind a parent of a schoolyard fight. let's go to the latest battle with an outgoing cia chief, where you have the president-elect accusing john

brennan of being the, quote, leaker of fake lewis. if congressman lewis started that fight, what has the. president-elect started with the intel community, and this tweet, accusing the head of the cia, in the words, was this the leaker of fake news? >> let's back this up a little. part of the goal of the intel chiefs is to come to give the president and the president-elect information they need to guide themselves going forward. the key intelligence reports. and when you see someone like john brennan, who is supposed to be giving information and confidence to the president-elect, attack the president-elect, and talk about his lack of understanding of russia, when he is a very, very poor record on not just russia but some of the key world affairs and there's questions about how certain information is getting out. it was john brennan, someone who the president-elect is supposed to protect, attacked him, is unbelievable. the idea you can question the president-elect's knowledge and understanding of russia is pretty remarkable.

>> sean, we have limited time. does he believe he leaked that salacious memo? that's the question. >> i think there's a lot of questions as far as how that thing got out and some of the information that got out. and the context in which it happened. i think there's a lot of issues. when you see someone like john brennan go out and publicly attack the president-elect of the united states, and a key issue he has a grasp on, it is disappointing. once again, you have the people -- make no mistake. one of the things that's interesting about this president-elect, is he's not going to sit back. he's going to fight for america. he's going to fight to make sure that we reassert around the globe. and americans and american workers are put first. >> and also, just on a last note here, willing to fight television programming, including "snl" his tweets went from criticizing brennan to "snl" and is that what we're going to continue to see? >> before i let you go on that. what "saturday night live" did on saturday, last night, was

in. the two men were hooded. one had a ski mask and a cap and a jacket with police written on it. the second individual had the same clothes but no ski goggles. they stood over her, demanding her diamond ring on the night stand. one of them takes out the gun. and i show him the ring. he pointed the gun at me. i was in a bathrobe, naked underneath. they push med on the bed. and they tied me up and put plastic cables and tape on my hands and taped my mouth and legs. they carried me to my bathroom, specifically, the bathtub. the robbers cleared out her jewelry box, taking bracelets, diamonds and a gold rolex watch. in all, $9 million in jewels. plus her iphone and blackberry. kardashian told police, they left the cash. she told police she was able to free herself once the robbers were gone. >> they're going to shoot me in

medications may have serious side effects. but did you know that combining certain foods with prescriptions can determine how well they work or don't work. natalie azar is a medical contributor. good morning to you. we're talking specific foods and classes of medications. let's start off with leafy greens. they're good for us. >> they can interact with a medicine called warferin. it helps with blood clots. it counteracts the vitamin k. vitamin k is found in leafy green vegetables. some of the biggest offenders would be spinach, kale and collard green. what does that mean for the patient taking it? if you take too much vitamin k, it will decrease how effective the warfrin is. it has to be a consistent amount. your doctor or health care provider is going to check blood

tests on you to make sure your warfrin level is therapeutic. >> in this case, is that listed on the prescription? >> a lot of times the things are listed on the prescription. also in the package insert. and you're going to inlist the help of the pharmacist to teach you about the drug/food interceptions. >> ace inhibitors. >> and bananas. >> what are ace inhibitors. they relax blood vessels. they're good to treat high blood pressure and heart failure and other things. but they can affect the kidneys and cause a pump in your potassium level. people that have a not normal kidney function, eating too many bananas, rich in potassium, could raise the level to a high enough degree to have heart abnormalities. this is something that most health care providers would be familiar with. >> moving on to antibiotics and milk. >> i don't know. the group of antibiotics called

tetra tetracyclins. it will block of absorption of the medicine and make it ineffective. another class is cipro. you're allowed to take with milk. and the point here is you don't want to take it at the same time. you want to spread it out, the medicine with the dairy, a couple of hours. >> this case, i'm seeing the label do not take with milk. >> that's a common warning. >> nsaids and garlic. >> nsaids, which stands for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. that's a plate let drug. and so does garlic. garlic can also thin your blood. people taking garlic supplements and taking nsaid regularly,

could experience blood thinning that could be dangerous. >> what if it's just in your food? >> if you use garlic for seasoning, it shouldn't amount to that effect. but taking a whole garlic and a lot of it, where you can get in trouble. >> grapefruit. >> grapefruit is one of the biggest offenders. but statens that lower cholesterol. that can cause the statin level to rise. they are fantastic medicines for preventing heart disease and treating cholesterol, can have said effects. we're advise people not to drink -- i read different sources. a quart of grapefruit juice a day. other drinks like orange juice are not so difficult. the provider or pharmacist can offer guidelines. >> some of this i never heard before this segment. this is fascinating. thank you very much. for an in depth list of the foods that may interact with
