weather a chilly morning gave way to a much warmer afternoon. joggers went out for a run. >> it's time to grab those umbrellas. rain on the way. that rain will start falling as much of you head back to work and school after the long weekend glenn "hurricane" schwartz has a look at our forecast. >> those clouds have already moved into the area after that sunshine earlier in the day. we're starting to see some returns on the radar as well getting closer to reading and allentown and in lancaster county. this stuff not reaching the ground yet but as we go back farther to the west, there is more significant moisture west of pennsylvania and especially into the ohio valley and everything is moving in our direction so yes we do expect some rain as the night goes on. by 8:00 it's just cloudy around here. the future cast we have a couple sprinkles possible before midnight and this area pink indicating chance of little bit

of light freezing drizzle in northern parts of the area. by tomorrow morning it's it mostly dry but there is a little bit of light rain or drizzle around and by 8:00 a.m. it's starting to increase again. we do expect some wet weather for the morning rush. couple spots of freezing rain or freezing drizzle which will change over to regular rain pretty quickly. the temperature now 39 degrees it right now, 41 in philadelphia, so the temperatures a long way from being at the freezing mark. watch what happens as we go through the night. 10:00 it's 37 by 6:00 a.m. the temperatures up as the showers come in. p.a. suburb temperature up, lehigh valley, temperature up by 9:00 so we think this is mostly just a chilly rain to start the day across most of the area. we'll see when the rain ends and more significant rain comes in a little bit later.

mlk for all of the many wonderful things he stood for. mr. trump met today with martin luther king the iii in trump tower in new york. voting rights was the main agenda topic, the younger king -- attaching photos to social security cards so no one is turned away from the polls for lack of a picture i.d. congressman and civil rights leader john lee witness spoke at a martin luther king daybreak fast in miami today. there was no mention of mr. trump after lewis's claim on meet the press that donald trump is not a legitimately elected president. he implored the audience to fight for justice. stand up, speak up when you see something that is not right up, and not be quiet. >> lewis says he will not attend friday's presidential inauguration of donald trump. >> meanwhile the president-elect

continues to lash out at critics in the intelligence community in a tweet last night mr. trump questioned whether the cia color himself was what trump called the leaker of fake news. the criticism came hours after cia chief john brennan accused mr. trump lacking a full understanding of the threat moscow poses to the united states. >> this afternoon we're hearing from local republican leaders after dozens of democratic lawmakers said they will boycott the inauguration. at least two dozen democrats say they won't attend the swearing in ceremony. dti qu)u evans is evans was sworn into office just two months og for his first term. that she doesn't plan to attend the inauguration, she's planning a prayer vig il. the deputy chairman of the republican party of pennsylvania, she says the boycotts won't help fix any problems. >> guess what, a lot of people

tomorrow's inauguration of governor elect john car any. a number of roads will be closed to traffic. he'll be officially inaugurated as the 74th governor of delaware. because of road closeures shuttle buses will be available for those who plan to attend. pennsylvania's new attorney general will also be sworn in tomorrow. josh sha peero. >> from our delaware bureau now a new crack down on crime. violence has spiked in wilmington since the start of the new year. the mayor is taking action. as nbc10 spencer reports neighbors say they've heard this promise before. >> reporter: it was literally outside your front door. >> even the reverend james brown is filling the violence in wilmington first hand. the long time community organizer returned home saturday afternoon to find a man dead of gun shot wounds in a car in the

street. it seems the battle will days are back. >> it's like real crimes of what used to be a few years ago. >> reporter: it's back. >> yeah. >> reporter: since the beginning of 2017 wilmington has faced a new spike in gun crimes. there were three murders during mayor mike prezecky's four days in office. >> it is not quickly solable. >> reporter: the mayor says the city and police are taking action effect actively immediately. a new overtime strategies for officers will deploy additional officers to hot spots. the police will also amp up its efforts to talk on regular neighbors that live in the hot spots. knowing that neighbors may have good information on possible leads and on who may have an illegal gun the mayor says he can't let the cost of increase of overtime dictate public

safety. >> it's not a human cost but an economic cost for our city. we can't cripple the city's economy because of a reputation of violence. >> reporter: community building is the long-term solution to violence but for now the fight is in the hands of police officers and the reverend is keeping his faith. >> as far as i'm concerned the police are doing the job. it's just a lot of work for them. >> reporter: reporting in wilmington, george spencer nbc10 news. >> overseas in central asia dozens of people are dead after a cargo jet crashed into a village. take a look at the scene here. more than 20 homes were destroyed in the crash. investigators say the 747 was flying from hong kong to istanbul and was making a scheduled stop before the crash. the plane's data recorders have been recovered and officials are denying the reports that the plane crashed because of dense fog. >> five people are dead in mexico after a gunman opened fire during an electronic dance musical festival.

it happened early this morning. police say the shooting started after an argue mnl. at least three of the victims were part of a security team at the club. another victim was killed in a stampede after club goers started running toward the exit. >> noor salman the wife of omar ma teen was arrested outside her home in the san francisco area. law enforcement sources tell nbc10 the charges are related to obstruction of justice. she's do in court tomorrow. 94 people you'll recall were killed and 50 more kurt when ma tooen opened fire last june. mateen was killed in a shootout with police. one of the victims had just graduated from west catholic prep tri college. she was shot sht leg and graduated from university high school. >> drivers dead after he crashed his car this morning on

interstate 25 in burlington county. sky for ten was just over this scene. the car went off the side of the road there. lanes were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene. >> deadly industrial accident in ben salem. the victim was a 57-year-old man. >> the search for a missing fisherman in ocean county has been called off. christopher suggests clam boat was found empty. res queue crews spentd 3 days looking for the man. he didn't need any help. >> today camden county top cop is in wisconsin to meet with the speaker of the house to tell how to improve policing around the country. chief scott thompson with congressman paul ryan. chief thompson focus about new police initiatives that he developed in camden. other leaders talked about new

standards to stop the use of unnecessary force. starting tomorrow some big changes for how beer is sold across pennsylvania. they can now sell beer in any quantity including six packs. bars can start selling alcohol at 9:00 a.m. on sundays without having to sell food and you can legally be a part of a beer of the month club that ships directly to your home. also sports venues are now allowed to sell mixed drinks. >> in new castle county, downtown restaurant week is back in newark. more than a dozen restaurants are offering special menus and to sweeten the deal parking will be free in downtown newark tonight. restaurant week runs until sunday. the chester county, ber roe is getting $1 million from the federal government to build a new trail and sidewalks there. the 10 foot wide trail will be near woodbine avenue. money is in addition $235,000

downingtown received from the state. in honor of martin luther king day the american red cross is taking part in a nationwide campaign to install 15,000 smoke alarms. they're installing them in norristown today. the red cross installed more than 8,000 alarms in eastern p.a. in new castle county a day of celebration in wilmington. the second annual mlk day of celebration. the event focused on leadership, antibullying and community involvement. the program was developed by the corporate black employee network. >> and making a difference on and off the field that was the goal today at south philadelphia at the ryan howard training center. he worked with kids from the mlb urban youth academy, the phillies and chevrolet teamed up

to present a $25,000 student scholarship. >> i hope i'm making a good impact and i hope they take something out of it. but they've been great, asking a lot of questions. hopefully they take it. >> this was all part of the phillies mlk day of service as players took part of a week in community events in our area. president obama is sel self-admitted lifelong chicago white sox fan but today he welcomed chicago's other baseball team to the white championships chicago cubs. the white sox, they presented him some gifts. it was a visit 108 years in the making. >> i made a lot of promises in 2008. we've managed to fulfill a large

number of them, but even i was not crazy enough to suggest that during these eight years we would see the cubs win the world series. but i did -- >> the cubs hadn't won a world series since 1908. so he wasn't willing to go out on a limb there, but glenn "hurricane" schwartz often goes out on a limb. he predicts the future all the time when it comes to weather. >> and big changes coming our way. >> we have warmer weather moving in and it's not going to be filling like january for a while. it's also going to be on the wet side and that does look like it's going to impact the inauguration, as a matter of fact. it's 41 degrees, cloudy skies right now. clouds across the entire area. temperatures are well above the freezing mark and with rain moving in, not snow, we have to keep a close eye on those temperatures as we go through the night. the clouds will help prevent the

temperature from dropping very much now that the sun is about to set but it's still well above freezing. reading is 39 degrees, blan din 39, kutztown 38, whitehall is 40, so obviously this is the area the lehigh valley, berk county that we have to watch the closest for anything close to the freezing mark. we have light rain later tonight into tuesday. we're not talking about a whole lot of rain. the temperatures over the next week or ten days averaging about 10 degrees above normal, the normal high is 40. we're closer to 50 over the next week or so. inauguration mild but we also see some rain moving in. right now we're starting to see a if you echos on the radar. this is not reaching the ground. and as we go through the night and into tomorrow the atmosphere's warming up so we're not anticipating any kind of a snow threat and the only kind of

frozen threat would be some brief freezing rain in parts of the northern suburbs and that's why we watch these temperatures closely now. the computer models may be a little too cold for what's going on right now. remember, it's well into the 30s. we got clouds coming in. may not be quite down to 28 degrees in allentown by 11:00 tonight but i'll be here monitoring it hour by hour for you as we go into the morning hours. you see the temperatures are up from what we're seeing later this evening some patchy very light rain. we don't have anything too well organized until we get toward the mid-morning and again the temperatures start going up a little bit more. not talking about heavy rain, but in many of the northern suburbs we're talking about several hours worth of rain. it's not going to be a pretty day tomorrow. it's going to be cloudy all day, temperatures getting into the 40s and that's about it and only into the upper 30s in some of

the lehigh valley. that's not a really nice looking day. wednesday a little bit milder and then thursday we might see some sunshine. tomorrow not looking like sunshine. ta coney 45 degrees for the high. you'll notice these low temperatures because that's important. want them to stay above the freezing mark. langhorne 44 after a low of 35. easton, allentown at 34, reading at 33. so you see how close it is to freezing. egg harbor township at the shore down to 35 degrees. everybody has a lot of clouds tomorrow and periods of rain. and speaking of rain, for inauguration, this is some of the mildest weather i've ever seen for an inauguration week but by friday, inauguration day looks like rain moving into washington. that's coming our way too. more on that later. >> well, it was a phone bill

an ice storm is making its way across iowa. the streets department really busy clearing roads as well and there was lots of slipping and siding in seeder rapids this morning. well, she stays under feet right there. thick layer of ice is covering just about everything there. other news we're hearing from the owners of ringling bros bar

right now 4:00 a live look at nbc10 first alert radar. going to be a wet start to the work week tomorrow. most of us enjoying a sunny and mild end to the long holiday weekend. >> but now that rain is moving in. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with more on that. >> the clouds are the first sign and we had a lot of sunshine today but not any more. those clouds are are in. we're already seeing some returns on the radar.

this is around berks county and getting around to chester county. and that precipitation evaporates before it gets to the ground. there's more moisture west of pennsylvania and into the ohio valley and rain is on the way in. as we go through the evening hours, we still keep those clouds and the cloud prevents the temperature from dropping very much during the night tonight and that's a good thing because as this precipitation comes in you don't want it to be below freezing or you get a freezing rain or drizzle. looks for the most part like it's just regular rain. the lehigh valley is the area we're going to have to watch the closest temperatures hour by hour as we go through the night tonight. you can see how wet it becomes as we go through the night and into the morning. so it's 37 in coatsville now, 39 in wilmington and allentown, 41 in philadelphia and trenton temperatures will well above the freezing mark now and they're

customer did i this morning in san francisco. she's due in court tomorrow. >> in honor of martin luther king day thousands of people are using their time off to do some good in the community today. the nation's largest service event got underway this morning. the school says it expects 5,000 volunteers to lead more than 100 activities. projects like workshops and health fare. we spoke with volunteers about what it means to volunteer on mlk day. >> amazing. we do it every year. we do it every year. it's amazing. anything for the kids. and this year's project i love reading, i love books, so it makes it even more special. >> these volunteers are just part of the 145,000 expected to serve in the greater philadelphia area today. and children's hospital of philadelphia is also giving back for the mlk day of service. hundreds of chop employees right here, their families and friends

getting together today as south philadelphia high school. they were painting hallways with inspirational quotes and also putting up some merrials. >> new jersey senator cory booker made a strong call to action while honoring dr. king in washington today. to be proactive. booker was recognized this morning for his work as senator. during his accept hence speech he encouraged the office to stay faithful in their fight nor justice. >> activism doesn't happen during presidential campaigns or marches on washington. the activism has to be an every day choice that you make. >> reverend al sharpton praised corey booker for testifying against senator jeff sessions. you can help celebrate dr. king's legacy right now on nbc10.com.

wednesday. 51 doesn't sound like much. that's 11 degrees above normal. we have a couple little blips on the radar starting to develop. atmosphere getting more moist but not moist enough for it to reach the ground yet. we have a little bit more in western pennsylvania and a lot more across the ohio valley that will be moving our way. so the increase is very gradual as we go through the evening. nothing more than a couple of sprinkles but by the morning rush especially the latter portion it gets wetter and wetter out there. couple spots with freezing drizzle. marginal temperatures and then the rain is off and on during the day tomorrow and into tomorrow night and into wednesday. kind of a wet period and then we don't get much of a break. should be dry on thursday, but

then friday comes back. so for tomorrow, everybody gets some rain, lehigh valley gets more probably, more hours of it. bethlehem high of only 38. easton only 38 for the high. but you'll notice as we he go farther south it gets warmer, west chester at 45, 46 in fair mount and then into new jersey we're talking 47 in haddonfield and glassboro and atlantic city, galloway, avalon getting close to the 50 degrees mark. so that's the kind of contrast you're going to see from north to south and in philadelphia, the temperature goes up into the 50s for wednesday and thursday. p.a. suburbs going up as well. notice generally dry weather on thursday. the chance of showers on wednesday but thursday should be dry and then friday, the rain

starts to move back in. so here's that temperature rise, remember the average high is only 40. by friday, looks like rain moves in during the afternoon. it should move into washington, perhaps in the morning effecting the inauguration but the temperatures above normal there and then over the weekend it's still pretty cloudy. next week, early next week that's when i think the heaviest rain should be coming but we don't see any decent sunshine for more than one day until at least the middle of next week. >> i'm very, very proud. >> she's been come piling her family's history for nearly 40 years of ann ses terz who played a major role in freeing slaves. she's sharing a part of it only on nbc10.

escaped slavery via the underground railroad a network of people and secretive hiding spots. >> it means a lot to me. i mean -- i don't know how to put it in words but it's a good feeling. >> reporter: the still family who worked alongside harriet tubman are great, great uncle william still wrote the underground railroad in 1872 after writing down names of slaves and their masters and hiding them. >> if it was caught hundreds and hundreds of slaves would have been brought back into the slavery because they could trace them. so he hid what he wrote he each night in a cemetery in pennsylvania. >> reporter: now 99 she's thankful her family's legacy of giving back and serving others is being kept alive and inspiring future generations,
