let's begin with our countdown to the inauguration, only three days away. the first event being held tonight. that's a black tie invitation-only dinner for president-elect trump's team, foreign diplomats and top donors. >> this morning, there's fresh tension between mr. trump and the intelligence community, with the outgoing cia director hitting back at trump's criticism in an interview. >> and confirmation hearings on the capitol hill. in the hot seat, jump's nominee for director of education and interior secretary. our team is at trump tower, starting with kristen welker. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump is facing a number of new controversy today, including the words from john brennan, who is dismissing claims he was behind leaks for

unverified information. and blasting mr. trump for comments about the intelligence community. all this amid plans by democrats to boycott the inauguration. brennan, in an interview with "the wall street journal," unleashing on trump for his comments last week, after unverified and unflattering information was leaked about the president-elect. was i a leaker of this? no, brennan told "the wall street journal." and he took aim over these comments. >> i think it's a disgrace. and i say that. and i say that. and that's something that nazi germany would have done and did do. >> reporter: brennan telling "the journal," tell the families of the 117 cia officers who are forever memorialized on our wall of honor that their loved ones who gave their lives were akin to nazis. over the weekend, trump seemed to blame brennan for the leaks. brennan firing back. it's when there's allegations

made about leaking or about dishonesty or a lack of integrity. that's where i think the line is crossed. it's the latest clash in what has been an ongoing fut between mr. trump and the intelligence community he's about to lead, after officials determined that russia tried to meddle in the u.s. election, a point that mr. trump only recently acknowledged. >> i think it was russia. >> reporter: and there's more fallout from mr. trump's war of words with civil rights icon, john lewis. more than 30 democrats saying they won't attend trump's inauguration on friday. the president-elect meeting with dr. martin luther king jr.'s son, at trump tower, ignoring questions about the fight. >> do you regret attacking john lewis? >> reporter: lewis sparked the controversy, by telling nbc's chuck todd, he doesn't see trump as a legitimate president. leading trump to lash out at the congressman on twitter. honoring king's legacy, congressman lewis didn't mention trump, but stressed -- >> when you see something not

fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something, and not be quiet. >> reporter: even first lady michelle obama weighing in, tweeting, thinking of dr. king and great leaders like john lewis who carry on his legacy. may their example be ours. >> this is a week we ought to be coming together. >> reporter: president-elect trump is reaching out to another civil rights leader. a source familiar with the leader, said trump called andrew young monday and invited him to the white house. in a letter to mr. trump, obtained by nbc news, young seemed to criticize those who are shutting out trump. saying, in the movement, we never turned away from the opportunity to have conversations, even if they involved snarling dogs or swinging billy clubs. you can never find common ground without conversation. and this morning, a new cnn/orc

poll, shows mr. trump could be sworn in with historically low approval ratings. his approval rating at 40% compare that to president obama, with 84%. and george w. bush who had 61%. we are learning this morning that american automaker gm is expected to announce it's keeping 1,000 jobs here in the u.s. a plan the company says has been in the works for quite some time. but somes several weeks after mr. trump attacked the company on twitter for outsourcing jobs, what seems to be an increasingly common tactic for the incoming commander in chief. >> kristen welker. thank you. back to business on capitol hill this morning. more cabinet nominees being grilled by lawmakers, including his controversial pick for education secretary. hallie jackson is there for us. >> reporter: good morning to you. betsy devos the pick to lead the education department.

she is facing fire from some teachers unions. and congressman ryan zinke could be leading the interior department. all of it shaping up to be another wild day in washington. today, more fireworks on capitol hill, even before the inauguration celebration. president-elect trump's pick to lead the education department, betsy devos, will face a senate confirmation committee. >> it's time to make education great again in this country. >> reporter: devos has given money to politicians like senators on the committee she'll answer questions from today. among them, north carolina's richard burr, whose office declined to comment on conflict of interest. devos, a staunch supporter of school choice and vouchers. trying to expand those programs in multiple states.

>> i know we will make great strides in our schools. >> reporter: that's not how some teachers unions see her. >> if betsy devos becomes secretary of education, then for the first time ever, we will have someone who is running education in america, that doesn't believe in public education. >> reporter: also on the hill today, mth millionth congressman ryan zinke, for his confirmation hearing to lead the interior department. zinke, an avid hunter and fisherman, has backed funding for open space. but some environmental groups, lining up against him, are hitting his record, supporting the keystone xl pipeline. >> at the end of the day, i want to help america be great again. i'm not hard left, hard right, i'm red, white and blue. >> reporter: his notable

establishments, coming at his time as a navy s.e.a.l. the president-elect, praising zinke's leadership skills and an attitude of doing whatever it takes to win. lots of cabinet confirmation on the hill this week. in addition to devos and zinke, the picks for epa, commerce, and for treasury also here on capitol hill this week. that includes someone that could be controversial. got some breaking news. after nearly three years, the hunt for malaysia flight 370 is ending. the fate of the plane and the 239 people onboard still unknown. nbc's tom costello has been covering this search from the beginning. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. this was a boeing 777 flying to

china, that went off radar. radar suggested the plane did a u-turn and went over the south indian ocean, never to be heard from again. now, after years of searching, with helicopters, and underwater drones, the search is being called off. the most expensive and complicated search in aviation history is over. after nearly three years, the hunt for malaysia airlines flight 370 has been called off. crews have been searching for the aircraft since it vanished during a flight from kuala lumpur to beijing on march 8th, 2013. the search run jointly by the governments of malaysia, australia and china, which spent $150 million trying to locate the missing plane, released a joint statement. despite using every effort, and as well as modeling and advice from highly skilled professio l professionals who are the best in their field, the search has

not located the aircraft. >> the malaysia 370 mystery is one like none other. if they suspend the search before they find it, it may go unanswered. >> reporter: in july 2015, the first proof that 370 was in the indian ocean. a wing flap washed ashore, thousands of miles to the west, on reunion island, just off madagascar. but investigators never termed what caused the crash. and a small amount of debris, has done little to shed light on what happened. >> if you lock at amelia earhart or the "titanic," which took a hundred years to find that wreckage, this could be along those lines. >> reporter: they have found pieces of wreckage washed ashore in africa, but really small pieces. a support group for the families of the missing passengers, have pushed continuing looking for the plane, moving the search zone to the north. overnight, they released a

statement, saying commercial planes cannot be allowed to disappear without a trace. and stopping at this stage, they say, is irresponsible. guys, back to you. >> tom costello, thank you. now, to major developments in the istanbul terror attack. the attacker has been arrested. istanbul's governor says the man is an uzbekistan national who entered turkey illegally one year ago. he confessed to the nightclub shooting and his fingerprints matched those of the gunman. isis claimed responsibility of the attack but produced no evidence of its involvement. we have new developments in the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando, as well. the wife of gunman omar mateen is in custody in connection with that master. kerry sanders has more on that. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. since the massacre seven months ago, here at the pulse nightclub in orlando, there's been one lingering question, did the

gunman act alone? this morning, in a federal courtroom in california, they'll unseal an indictment that says the gunman's wife knew what was about to happen. this is the first video of the rest of nor salman, the wife of shooter omar mateen. agents took her into custody and raided her home near san francisco. she has been charged of bading and abetting the terrorist attack and obstruction of justice. >> this is a matter we continue to take seriously. it was our goal and we said we were going to look at every aspect of this case. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the night mateen carried out hais attack at the pulse nightclub. she texted her husband. where are you? he replies, do you see what's happening? no. she says. he answers, i love you, babe. the next day, i asked mateen's father what he she told him.

>> everybody is shocked. especially his wife. she cannot talk. she is said. >> reporter: but law enforcement officials told nbc news, she became a person of interest, after telling officials she was with her husband when he bought ammunition at walmart and drove with him past the club. she told "the new york times," i was unaware of everything. this morning, the family is saying they're shocked and surprised. at her arrest because they had been cooperating with law enforcement. her attorney calling her innocent. writing in a statement. noor salman had no foreknowledge nor could she predict what omar mateen intended to do that tragic night. we believe that it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her. a pulse survivor says salman's arrest doesn't change much for him. >> does it make anybody feel any better? i'm not really sure. >> reporter: noor salman is expected to be extradited back here to florida to stand trial.

matt? tamron? >> thank you very much. meantime, investigators in mexico are searching for a gunman in a deadly nightclub shooting there. five people were killed including an american. at the popular resort town of playa dell carmen. this morning, we're hearing from the family of that american victim. >> reporter: the frantic moments caught on cell phone video. the final night of the world-famous bpm music festival, interrupted by gunfire. five people killed, including 18-year-old afrom denver, who officials say was trampled in a stampede. her older brother caught in emotion. >> this is causing a lot of pain. she wanted to give back to the community. i loved that about her.

>> reporter: several more americans among the 15 people injured. including ignacio from houston, texas, who met ybarra at the festival and was trying to help her from the floor of the nightclub, when he realized he had been shot in both arms. >> i felt pain. but there was no much going on, i felt it and i didn't felt it. i don't know if it was my blood or someone else's blood. >> reporter: heather and michael from brooklyn were also shot and survived. patrick ryan from milwaukee, wisconsin, escaped unharmed. >> next thing i know, everyone is sprinting and trying to find safety. obviously, a lot of panic. >> reporter: the chaos unfolded early monday in the resort town of playy delray mexico, after security guards weren't going to let him in the blue parrot nightclub because he was carrying a gun. >> it was the same thing in

with will appear in court today. officials say she was with mateen when he bought ammunition and drove by the pulse nightclub before the shooting. her attorney claims that she is innocent and had no prior knowledge of her husband's plan. and former astronaut gene cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, has died. he became a passionate advocate for space exploration. now, what would be new evidence in the d.b. cooper sky-jacking case. it's coming from a group of scientists that have been looking into that mystery. miguel almaguer has that story. >> reporter: the fbi couldn't crack the case. but now, scientists think they've narrowed the search for

the suspect, with evidence found in his necktie. the old clip-on tie from jcpenney is said to be spotted with evidence. and it could now help solve a mystery that has stumped investigators for more than 45 years. >> law officers in four western states this evening are searching for a man who is, perhaps, the most clever and certainly the most audacious airplane hijacker of all-time. >> reporter: the tie belongs to the man dubbed d.b. cooper, the sky-jacker who parachuted out of a passenger plane in 1971, with a bag full of cash. >> we've talken cooper down from being one of millions of people in the united states, down to just a handful that maybe 1,000 people. >> reporter: a group of scientists calling themselves amateur sleuths, were given rare access to evidence by the fbi. and have identified more than 100,000 particles of rare earth elements coating d.b. cooper's

tie. >> reporter: the periodical table of clues, say scientists, suggest that cooper had access to a manufacturing company that made airplanes, like the one he jumped from. perhaps a company with a connection to boeing. >> we're not exactly sure if he worked at boeing. but we think potentially a supplier was dealing with boeing. >> reporter: the 1971 unsolved mystery begins with a neatly dressed man, who identified himself as dan cooper. and hijacked a northwest airlines jet, releasing passengers in seattle in exchange for parachutes and $200,000 in ransom. airborne in the pacific northwest, cooper did the unimaginable, plunging from the back of the plane into history. some cash was found along colombia river in washington state. >> we found the right rabbit hole to look down. the end of the rabbit hole is

researchers at oregon state ran numbers on people over 65. it lowers the chance of dying by 11%. it keeps you healthier. research from the university of miami. people who work past 65, say they're in good, very good or excellent health. mental sharpness is a big one. even people who say they're working just for the money, at least to begin with, say it really helps keep them clear. and the biggest one, i think, is that it reduces isolation. we looked at some research from age wave. they say if you're isolated in retirement, it can have the impact of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. >> really? >> unbelievable. >> gosh. >> and those of us who love what we do, it gives you an identity, which is night. >> let's look at financial benefits. people looking to earn a paycheck or disposable income. >> that's right. let's talk about the money in your retirement accounts.

if you're earning a paycheck, you can leave that money in your retirement accounts, which means it can continue to grow. you can keep contributing. if you take off putting the pension, you may receive a larger paycheck throughout your retirement. that's a big one. social security. we talk about this all the time. >> all the time. >> for every year you delay taking social security, from age 62-70, your benefits grow by average of 8% every year, guaranteed. that's enormous. and you may still be eligible for some company benefits. if you work for a company that has more than 20 people, you may be able to stay on their health plan, rather than going on medicare. and when you do retire, you won't have wait for the open enrollment period. that may be something to consider. >> i did not know this until reading the notes. a lot of people consider this working in retirement rather than working past retirement. >> i think the difference in the language there is that it reflects that it's more of a

choice. if you say you're working past retirement, it's a little like a slog. but working in retirement, seems to say, this is something that i'm choosing to do. and when you're thinking about what to do, you want to cast a very wide net. what we know about people that are working in retirement, three of five are doing something new. retirees are three-times more likely than other people to be entrepreneurs. but it's not something that you can just decide that you want to do, the day before you retire. you have to make a plan. you should be laying the groundwork for this. at least five years in advance. and brush up your tech skills if you can. that's absolutely huge. >> hang out with the teenagers or the grandkids in the area or take classes. >> get free tech education. go to a community college. learn those skills that will be useful. >> the other thing here. consider a breather. how long do you wait or how soon do you jump back in? >> we know that on average, people are taking a breather of about 2 1/2 years, from the time

musical. chazz wrote the book. and tommy is lead producer. this is like a murderer's row of producing and directing talent here. this is your story, right? i saw him at a basketball game not long ago. we walked up. talked to each other. when we brought this show up, you got a smile on your face like i have never seen before. why does it mean so much to you? >> you know, it's my life story. growing up in the bronx. i witnessed this murder. my father was a bus driver. he played saxophone. and he always wanted to play, you know, be a saxophone player, which i didn't bring it up in the movie or the one-man show. but i was able to do it in this musical. bob saw me do it almost 28 years ago. and bob made it happen as a movie. >> the way the story goes, you're told after doing the one-man show, she's in the house and in your dressing room and wants to talk to you?

>> yes. >> what do you remember about that meeting? >> i had been hearing about the show. i wanted to go see it. and then, it had been running far while, a couple months or something. and i went and saw chazz. we'll talk. blah, blah, blah. >> you say he changed your life. i want to mention. there were other offers you had gotten to buy the story. why was his offer the right offer at that time? >> well, because, what bob said was, first of all, bob was the one who said, you should play sonny. and you'll write the screenplay. it will be honest. he gave me that opportunity. everybody else wanted it. but they didn't want me. they wanted to put a star in the role. but bob let that happen. and he let me write the screenplay. and he looked at me and said, if you do it with me, i'll make it right. i'll never forget those words. and he said, shake my hand and that's how it will be. >> that was the deal right will there. let's fast forward to 28 years. why was the time right to make it a musical? >> it's a timeless story. a story of a young kid who has a

father on one side and a father figure on the other. and not knowing who to listen to, who to pay attention to. it's timeless. and i think the idea of adding music to it is a beautiful stroke because it lifts up everything. it is a beautiful story. >> tommy, you helped make the soundtrack from the movie popular. why did you believe this could work on broadway as a musical? >> i had always been connected to it because of bob and doing the soundtrack at sony at that time. this amazing coming-of-age story, with kids from an italian neighborhood, kids who are just down the block in the black neighborhood. my growing up in the bronx and bob and i sitting around one day and said, this has got to be a musical. and that component was the thing that lael changed the whole dynamic, to make it what it is now. >> a lot of power here, a lot of great resumes sitting across from me. when push comes to shove in a

project like this, and there's a dispute over something -- >> it's me. >> yeah. >> i don't ahave to ask the question. you get final say? >> is that right? >> jerry did the heavy lifting. and we -- the last thing you want is any discord or -- i just can't have that. me, personally. i can't be part of that. we have a disagreement. we talk about it. we make a choice. and we move forward with it. and that's how it works. >> co-directing, is it like co-parenting? it looks good on paper. >> it was not easy. we did a great job. >> it wasn't easy? >> no. of course not. everybody has strong opinions here. everybody. >> really? >> chazz, tommy, everybody. >> the best idea usually won. >> let me segue to something in the news. in three days we have a new president in this country. and even in the run-up to that, we're learning that our democracy, while a model for the

world, can be messy. and there's some calls to boycott the inaugural. how do we feel about that? you think those calls are warranted? >> yeah. i think they are. i think whatever people do, they should do it fully because there's a lot of crazy stuff happening now. it's just crazy. and maybe it's an act. and we'll see once he's in. but you know, everybody has to be on guard. >> at some point, you have to stand up and support democracy and the office, don't you? >> of course, of course. but it has to be -- if you are -- are you saying do you believe what you see? or do you believe what i tell you? that old joke. we've been seeing a lot what we see, but not, you know -- it's not -- we all know what i'm talking about. >> i think it's human nature. >> that's the disturbing thing. >> and it's human nature to protect the possibility of a happy ending. we're going to do what we can, to hope this story has a happy
