former president, george h.w. bush, and former first lady, barbara bush, both hospitalized. because of their ages, there's a lot of concern. >> we will have more on their conditions later for you. >> we will. let's start with breaking news. in central italy, where an earthquake-trigger avalanche has buried a hotel at a ski resort. rescuers at the scene, after struggling to reach the site overnight. lucy kafanov joins us with the latest. >> reporter: one person is confirmed dead by authorities. rescue teams are on the ground as we speak, at this moment, looking for survivors. disaster striking in the dead of night. the massive avalanche burying a mountainside ski resort. this is the aftermath. the pool inundated by debris.

windows blocked. the hallways unpassable. rescue workers scramble on skis. using shovels. a race against the clock to get to survivors. this man was lucky. he was rescued. dozens still unaccounted for. heavy snowfall complicating the search. plows had trouble clearing the roads. this region was devastated by a deadly quake just five months ago. 300 people died. historic towns obliterated. yesterday, a series of earthquakes jolted the area again. beneath the snow, a luxury spa and ski resort. the four-star chalet was popular with families. now, a scene of devastation. 22 guests were registered at the hot hotel. six for oven staff members. most are missing. they are being brought to hospital, she says, but i don't know. it's impossible for us to go up.

as daylight breaks, choppers arrive to assess the damage. the idyllic surroundings, now, a scene of tragedy. officials aren't sure what triggered this avalanche. it could have been the earthquakes. it could have been the heavy snowstorms in that area. searches are under way. everyone hoping for the best. also bracing for the worst. >> lucy, thank you. now, to the other breaking news we told you about at the top of the show. a high-rise building in tehran that was engulfed by fire and smoke, collapsed today as firefighters were battling the blames. iran's state-run media says 30 firefighters were killed and 75 people were injured. the plasco building came down in a matter of seconds in a scene captured by live television. it's mostly commercial and attached to a shopping mall. no word on how the fire started. we want to turn to politics

now and the countdown to inn inauguration which is a day away. donald trump paid a surprise visit to his newest hotel before going back to new york. >> the president-elect will be in the capital, where events are ramping up. >> and donald trump is rounding out his cabinet choices. tapping former georgia governor, sonny perdue to head the agriculture department. he would be the first southerner to hold that position in 20 years. we have in depth coverage on the eve of the inauguration, starting with peter alexander, just a couple of blocks away at trump tower. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the official festivities begin this afternoon in washington. overnight, the incoming commander in chief tweeted out a photo with himself, meeting privately with wounded warriors in washington. this morning, he is waking up

here at trump tower. he will head to washington where he will spend the night tonight, getting ready for the inaugural ceremony. ahead of his first official act as president, the inaugural address, trump tweeted this picture of himself, writing a speech at his estate. on top today, a wreath laying at arlington national cemetery. followed by a make america great again celebration at the lincoln memorial. trump is going to speak. toby keith and lee greenwood performing. mike pence said they will begin rolling back president obama's executive actions immediately. >> you're going to see on that coming monday morning, the president sit down at his desk and begin to repeal and put into place executive action that will start the process of

implementing the agenda that we ran on. >> reporter: some are concerned about that agenda. overnight, lgbt activists gathered outside of pence's new home. the soon-to-be vice president opposes same-sex marriage, stoking fear in the gay community. and on the hill, democrats are taking aim at two nominees, including tom price, a retired surgery who would oversee the dismantling of obamacare. >> i'm frightened about what you are going to do, and so are millions of americans. >> i hope that we're able to work together to truly solve these difficult challenges we have in our nation. >> reporter: price is fending off tough questions of purchasing medical stocks days before pushing legislation that would benefit that company. >> did you sell the stock? >> i complied with the rules of the house -- >> i asked if the rules of the house let you to this. >> reporter: elizabeth warren also scolding price over the fate of medicare and medicaid.

barbara. at a houston hospital this morning. gabe gutierrez is there. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're told mr. bush is resting comfortably and stable here in the intensive care unit. his wife hadn't been feeling well for a few days. she was admitted as a precaution. more well-wishes are pouring in for the 41st president of the united states and his wife, at the same houston hospital. george h.w. bush in intensive care with pneumonia. and barbara bush under cautionary observation for fatigue and coughing. >> even though they're 91 and 92 years old, we're of the firm belief there's not a lot of money to be made betting against the bushes. >> reporter: the oldest living u.s. president was admitted on saturday for shortness of breath but became public four days later. and he took a turn with a blockage in his lungs. doctors sedated him to clear his

airway. >> they're fine as couple as we know. we want to send our prayers and love to them. >> reporter: the teenage sweethearts who met at a school dance, just celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. just last week, mr. bush sent a note to president-elect trump, saying he could not attend nad frid's inauguration. my doctor says, if i sit outside in january, it will likely put me six feet under. but we will be with you in spirit. mr. trump tweeted a speedy recovery. also sending her best wishes, hillary clinton, looking forward to you both being back on your feet soon, wild socks and all. and granddaughter and "today" show correspondent, jenna bush hager. >> the thing is, how lucky for our family that we have people that think about us. >> reporter: this is mr. bush's

mountainside hotel popular with families. it was buried under the avalanche. dramatic footage. showing the aftermath inside. the pool area filled with snow and debris. hallways completely blocked. there were 22 registered guests, 7 staff members. one person confirmed dead. two survivors now recovering. up to 30 people could still be missing. italian media is reporting that some of those trapped survivors sent desperate text messages. according to reports, one of them read, help, we are dying of the cold. there appears to be some hope for survivors. alpine teams arrived by skis, others by helicopter. this area, tremendously difficult to reach because of the heavy snow. even the plows had trouble getting through. now, it isn't clear at this stage whether that avalanche was triggered by the series of earthquakes on wednesday or the

>> yes. >> reporter: that's your biggest worry? >> that's my biggest worry. yes. >> reporter: across town, another community fears a different registry. >> there's going to be some significant changes. >> reporter: the muslim community of tucson, now holding informational meetings to prepare for what may come. this man has lived in the united states for 42 years. he's a family man and a small business owner, who used to identify with the republican party. now, he sees trump's statements about muslims as red flags. >> the leaders start talking about it repeatedly and the talk shows, nonstop, bombard the airwaves with this stigma that the muslims are bad, it takes its toll. you start wondering, even your closest friends that you are working with, maybe feeling this way. >> reporter: this woman became a nurse after the 9/11 attacks. she and her community have worked hand in hand with christians and jews to help those in need for years.

>> okay. >> we did what fancy cooks call the glazing, which is you have, you know, the brown bits and the fat, and you add the onion and the garlic. it's going to transform the raw taste from the onion and garlic to rustic and sweet. we're going to add the glaze, a fancy term for getting all of the flavor out of the pan. if you don't want to use red wine, you can use chicken broth. >> that's perfect. >> what the pomegranate juice is going to do, is help it caramelize. >> you want to see a great sight? jim gaffigan in there, as well. >> it's great. >> oh, my gosh. >> it does. >> after that has cooked down a bit, it's going to look like this. >> you cover it and put it in the oven. it's going to cook there for an hour and a half.

you're browning. and then, you're braising. you're making it be most succulent. you want the meat to completely -- see? >> oh. >> beautiful. you take that meat. >> okay. >> bring it? >> you have one? >> yeah. then, you just -- you can tackle absolutely anything. but this is really a great combination of flavor because you have the pomegranate-braised meat. and then, we're going to marry the juice with the guacamole. we're going to have an unconventional guacamole. some jalapeno, which will give it the mexican kick. but we have shallots that flavor that combines onion and garlic. then, we have ginger. and then, we have lime juice and oil and some superripe mexican avocado. i have three. >> is this going in or on top of
