cleaning up. the nor'easter that barreled down on us is moving out. but the effects of gusty winds and heavy rains continue this morning. president trump is expected to make moves today, with an invitation he got from the house speaker this morning. and a look at the nominations for the academy awards. right now at 11:00, there are some showers, as you can see, in parts of our area this morning. here say live look at the nbc 10 first alert radar. but the for easter we've been dealing with is finally moving out. a flood warning at the jersey shore, though, has just expired after communities up and down the coast dealt with flooding from the weather that we've seen over the past few days.

here say live look outside now at cape may. good morning, i'm katy zachary. >> i'm tracy davidson. streets this morning were underwater at many points like atlantic city. matt delucia is live from atlantic county. >> reporter: you see some of the cars trying to navigate this roadway that's flooded out. we're about a block away from the bay and the streets and walks are underwater. throughout the morning we saw the water come over the banks and affect drivers trying to get to work and kids trying to get to school. many taking the risk as the area saw another high tied around sunrise. winds kicked up as well, as residents discovered their homes surrounded by water. a near repeat of what folks along the shore saw exactly this time last year. we spoke with people who are dealing with another day and the remnants of this nor'easter. >> there's a lot of debris all over the place, trash cans. people were just telling me a

building over here, the wind blew off a lot of the siding. really a mess. >> reporter: the coastal flood advisory just expired, so now folks around the shore are examining the damage and cleaning up. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. a narrow escape, a fallen tree smashed into a car in galloway township. police say the driver and passengers got away with minor injuries. if philadelphia today, authorities will do an autopsy on a man who police think was killed by a company sign blown down by stormy weather. investigators say the sign fell and pinned the man to a car. around the city, downed trees and power lines damaged homes and cars. >> the car was parked right there where the sign fell. >> this is windier than the hurricane a couple of years ago. it was super windy.

take a look at what the wind from the nor'easter did to this piece of scaffolding in jersey city. it went sailing through the air just like it was a little toothpick. luckily no workers were on the skaflgt at the time when -- look at that, right, it's startling. the wind was so strong it slammed the scaffolding into the side of the building. closer to home, light showers and crowds will linger today. a live outside at center city, philadelphia, as you can see from the wind blowing, it is still pretty windy out there and just overall dreary. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with your most accurate forecast. >> we're looking at conditions that are still gray, damp outside. not going to be nearly as rough as yesterday. we've lifted the first alert. you can see on radar, still showers passing through our area and a few flakes trying to make it to the ground, although temperatures at the surface a tad bit too warm. we're look at the center of the storm now off to our east, which means we're seeing the eastern

most edges of our viewing zone getting clipped bit rain. that extends right near philadelphia county then down through parts of camden county and burlington coin as weglling. temperatures are above freezing out there. actually we're looking at the same deal near parts of atlantic city and galloway township. a few flakes are trying to mix in, but for the most part this is a light rain event and nothing like we saw yesterday. winds are still up. this is still an active situation for the rest of new england, as you track farther to the northeast. but for us this will start moving out for the rest of today and the winds will start lessening as well. they've already done so compared to yesterday. 25 in mehlville. atlan atlantic city, yesterday we saw gusts exceed 60 miles per hour. the way the winds are going now,

they're an offshore snow instead of an onshore flow. that's a good thing. that means the threat of coastal flooding does not exist as we go into high tide this afternoon, because we're now looking at the winds forcing those waves outward instead of inward. the damage has already been done in those areas. here is a look at the temperatures right now. we're above freezing everywhere except for mt. pocono at 31 degrees, good news as we see light precip falling. 41 in philadelphia, mehlville in 40, 41 in dover. redding, 42. lancaster, 43 degrees. the focus of today, not necessarily on the temperatures, although it will be a chilly when you knew it's on watching the moisture moving out. tomorrow, temperatures climb back up. in a few minutes we'll take a look at the warm-up and drying conditions and if they extend into your weekend. >> krystal, thanks. expect to use detowe towert.

engineers will need at least to weeks to get a handle on what will be needed to fix the bridge. the dell air bridge, it's dark, it's stuck in the open position after yesterday's high winds. ball of that new jersey transit suspended service between 30th street and cherry hill. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boynton is here. >> we had bridge closures affecting a lot of people. >> we're paying attention to those british closures because that's going to affect the most people. the bridge that's closed on the new jersey turnpike connecting the p.a. turnpike was a huge problem yesterday morning. you can see for structural repairs that will be closed for the next several weeks or so. from the p.a. turnpike eastbound, just around the bensalem exit, northbound down

to 295 southbound. once you get to 195 eastbound you can get off at exit 6, the new jersey turnpike. initially you can head to the scudder falls bridge. right now you can see they're actually doing a little bit better, all in the green there. speaking of 195 a little earlier, we're also watching 195 on the webbed side just around hamilton square road. just when we come to this shot here, they move the camera. on the westbound side there's overturned dump truck. it looks like some of that has seemed to have cleared. there is an overturned dump truck on the westbound side closing part of that ramp as well. northeast philly, an accident on route 1 southbound, just around adams avenue. that's in some of the outer lanes. remember that the atlantic city rail line is suspended because of that bridge stuck in the open position at delair bridge malfunction. the regional rails are dealing

with 30-minute delays due to wire problems. police in philadelphia say a pizza delivery driver who was shot in a robbery attempt chased away his attackers by firing his own gun. investigators say two teenagers try to rob the driver last night while he was making his delivery near 54th and yoakam street. one teen shot the driver in the arm. he shot back and the teens took off running. it's not clear if either of the robbers was hit. police say the driver took himself to the hospital for treatment. two philadelphia police officers are expected to be okay after being hurt while struggling with a burglary suspect. the officers were trying to arrest the man after he broke into a home on orthodox the free in frankfurt around 2:00 this morning. he was taking a bike and some tools and the officers got there. they say he resisted arrest and during the struggle, their hands were injured. no one was hurt at a fire at a chinese restaurant in

wingfield heights. firefighters brought it under control in just minutes. closing arguments in philadelphia are under way in a civil trial involving the deadly market street building collapsed. the building, being demolished, killed several people. the families are suing the developer and his company, the demolition project representative, the excavator operator, and the salvation army. two defendants convicted on criminal charges are already serving prison time. philadelphia will soon be the first city in the country where employers are banned from asking about an applicant's salary history. mayor kenney signed the bill yesterday. comcast has threatened legal action, saying the bill goes too far in dictating how companies can interact with potential workers. comcast is the parent company of nbc 10. a philadelphia man had his life changed in a flash.

but a bomb blast in his apartment in center city isn't stopping him from a recovery supported by loved ones. >> this is an inspiring story. nbc 10 was at a fundraiser for jim alden. he was badly wounded in november when a bomb hidden inside a manila envelope exploded. alden's hand is still wrapped and his face slightly scarred. friends spearheaded a fundraising website to help him pay for the mounting costs. alden was upbeat about the care and compassion he's gotten. >> i'm so lucky for what i have. >> jim is one of the most funny, caring, kind people i know. >> police are looking for this man they suspect could be connected with the bombing. investigators say the motivate remains a mystery. new jersey lawmakers are moving forward on a ban on cat declawing. the state assembly approved a measure to ban declawing on cats unless medically necessary.

tracking president trump's first 100 days. this morning, the white house says the president will take executive action to advance the keystone and dakota pipeline projects. he signed executive orders to move both pipelines forward. environmental advocates oppose both projects, which they say would have a severe negative impact on the areas where they're built. backers of the pipelines say they would create jobs and cut energy costs. this morning president trump met with heads of general motors, ford, and fiat cihrysler. he tweeted that the meetings were focused on building new cars in this country. house speaker paul ryan this morning formally invited president trump to address a join session of congress on february 28th. the speech will not technically be a state of the union address because the new president has

just taken office. the senate finance committee is holding a hearing on the nomination of congressman tom price to be secretary of health and human services. he's expected to face questions about weakening obamacare and the plan to replace the health care law. a senate committee is now considering trump's choice to head the white house budget office. mike mulvaney will have to approve he can get a handle on the country's budget deficit. it's expected to go up from an a87 billion deficit. the prep can from south carolina is expected to face questions about failing to pay thousands of dollars in payroll taxes for a household worker. another hearing is being held right now linda mcmahon, the president's choice to run the small business administration. mcmahon is the co-founder of world wrestling entertainment. she's expected to face questions about her role in stifling smaller competitors as she built her business. the senate judiciary

committee delayed a vote on the nomination of jeff sessions to be attorney general. senator dianne feinstein asked to put often the vote until next week to allow more time to review the pick. if he wins approval, the nomination will go to the full senate for a final vote. the senate banking committee today voted to approve ben carson as the secretary of housing and urban development. the senate commerce committee approved donald trump's choice to lead the commerce department. the same panel approved elaine chao's nomination to be transportation secretary. minnesota's governor is scheduled to deliver a budget address in about an hour, after collapsing during his state of the state address last night. governor mark dayton fainted and hit his head. doctors checked him out at home and say he'll be okay. he has a history of health problems. he fainted during a campaign

event last year and later blamed that on being overheated and dehydration. about quarter after 11:00 this morning. the same nor'easter that hit us yesterday is causing cars to spin out in parts of new england this morning. a combination of snow and ice led to slippery roads in northern massachusetts. the dangerous conditions were responsible for several crashes there. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. let's take a look at the effects of that nor'easter, still hitting parts of our area this morning. you're seeing the greens and even some of the whites. most of what you see is maybe some snow falling higher in the sky where it's colder. down at the surface it's melting when it makes it down to the ground because it's above freezing. atlantic city still has a few flakes mixing in with the rain. overall, light rain, nothing like what we saw yesterday. as you saw a few minutes ago, winds are lighter as well. a closer look added where we're seeing showers, along atlantic city north through ship bottom and tracking into monmouth

county. lighter showers up through camden, burlington, and mercer counties as well, through trenton, extending into bucks county. abington, you see a mix of a few flakes. temperatures at the surface are all above freezing, considerably. in the upper 30s, even low 40s, which means nothing is going to be sticking to the ground. new jersey neighborhood temperatures, just to show off what i'm talking about, these numbers are too warm for us to see anything stick. this is such a light snow as well, not a worry for icy spots. 39 degrees, pitman, 37 for mount laurel. robbinsville in the upper 30s. princeton, 36 degrees. temperatures won't climb much today. we'll see highs around the upper 30s to low 40s. 43 in center city. summer ton at 40. kutztown, 39. if you're wondering when the rain will stop, it will end by the end of today. throughout the rest of today, still some lingering light

showers are possible, misty conditions you might have noticed driving into work. trenton, 39 degrees. atlantic city, 45. wilmington at 42 degrees for the forecast high a little later this afternoon. here is the hour by hour forecast. this shows up pretty well what we're currently dealing with, just a mix of a few flakes trying to fall, only sticking in the poconos. light rain moves off to the east through the afternoon. why? the storm's center is out at sea just to the south of land. so it will continue tracking to the northeast and pull the moisture with it. we're left with lingering light rain into the early evening hours. overnight, we dry out. the moisture completely moves out the and the clouds move out. by tomorrow morning, scattered clouds are possible. we will start to see some shine for our we understand. that wednesday.

here is a look at those wind forecasts for today. what we are tracking are winds that are not nearly as strong as they were yesterday. yesterday we had gusts top out above 60 miles per hour along the jersey shore. and even inland we had gusts right in those upper 40s through philadelphia. today, 17 miles per hour sustained winds. 13 in allentown. peak gusts throughout the region, around 20 to 30 miles per hour. a little higher along the shore. as i mentioned earlier, the flow comes in from the northwest, which is much better for those coastal points. it is forcing waves outward instead of trying to force them inwards leading to coastal flooding concerns. nonetheless, we've seen water washing through. things do get better. today we are still chilly, 43 degrees for the high. you saw temperatures right now in the upper 30s. remember, because it's windy, it feels colder than it actually is. some of us feel about ten degrees colder.

there's mixed news today about cancer. more people than ever are surviving the disease. but that could actually depend on where you live. researchers tell us cancer deaths have dropped by about 20% in the last few decades. but cancer clusters in the south and midwest are linked to higher death rates including deaths from breast cancer along the

the impact of our nor'easter is still being seen at the jersey shore this morning. this is a picture of the flooding in harvey cedars in ocean county. police are reminding drivers not to go through flooded streets. in haddonfield, a giant tree fell on a home. fortunately no one was hurt but badly damaged. the top floor is just about destroyed from the tree falling. it is still windy and wet outside. not stopping shoppers at suburban square. people are doing what they can to stay dry as they get around today. hats and hoods are the order of the day in center city. people were bundled up there against the wind at 17th and the parkway. first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with your most accurate neighborhood forecast. krystal? >> we're still looking at some rain across the region. it's still chilly, that will be the case throughout the entire day, because those winds are

dumping cooler air that was ushered in with this system. like we saw the last half hour, still rain lingering over the north and east parts of our viewing area. you see it's a light green, this means it's a light era e eer ra nothing like we saw yesterday. flakes are mixing in but nothing making it to the surface because temperatures are too warm for snow to make it to the ground. rain in parts of philadelphia, trenton, isolated activity stretching into bucks county, even atlantic county where we're still getting reports of a few flakes trying to mix in with the rain but melting by the time it makes it to the ground. this is just a light rain. it will slowly start to move off more to the northeast and pull out of our area as we go into tonight. temperature-wise, definitely chilly. 41 degrees in philadelphia, allentown, coatesville. vine land, 40.

>> from continutornadoes to win waves, the effects, long lasting. >> reporter: hello from cape cod. as you can see, still some rain coming down, high, gusty winds causing a lot of treacherous travel conditions. about 23 million people in the path of this nor'easter. it's been causing problems yesterday into today as it continues to move north. >> it's really bad. i was standing up by the jetty and was getting blown forward. i was getting scared. >> reporter: a lot of downed power lines and trees. one man was actually killed in philadelphia when a sign blew off a car dealership and pinned him to a car. so really a dangerous storm out there. this is part of the same system that caused so many problems well to our south. a while go now to chris hopper in georgia to talk about what's going on there. chris? >> reporter: we're in albany, georgia, in the southern part of

confirmed dead after a tornado ripped through this area sunday afternoon. statewide, 15 people are dead after a weekend of severe storms. and local officials here in albany say their number could go up, because so many people are still missing, including a 2-year-old boy. i'm chris hopper for nbc news. in italy, fire rescue crews have pulled more bodies from the rescue of a hotel that was hit by an avalanche last week. the death toll stands at 15. 14 people are still reported missing. crews rescued people from in and around the hotel. some of them had survived for two days under ice and rubble. more tragedy in italy today, as a rescue helicopter crashed while trying to save an injured s skier. all six people on board were killed. this happened in central italy in the same area as the hotel

avalanche. there was heavy fog at the time. rescuers were taking an injured skier from a resort to a hospital. president trump just announced that he will name his pick to fill the vacancy in the u.s. supreme court next week. this afternoon, he's set to meet with senate leaders from both parties to discuss his supreme court choice. also president trump says he will keep james comey as fbi director. earlier this morning president trump met with the heads of general motors, ford, and fiat chrysler. he tweeted that the meeting would focus on keeping jobs in this car and building new car plants in this country. >> we're going to make the process much more simple for the auto companies and everybody else who wants to do business in the united states. i think you'll find this to be from very inhospitable to extremely hospitable. businesses that create jobs in the u.s. late last night, the president's cabinet started to take shape as

new director of the cia was sworn in and his nominee to secretary of state nominee moved closer to nomination. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> reporter: a cabinet coming together. cia head mike pompeo successfully sworn in. >> the recommendation passes. >> reporter: rex tillerson clearing his biggest senate hurdle, all but certainly to be named secretary of state next week. new leadership now for the trump administration's intelligence and foreign policy teams, with both of those topics in the spotlight. national security adviser mike flynn getting fresh attention for his interactions with russia's ambassador to the u.s. on december 29th. the same day the obama administration announced sanctions against moscow for interfering in the election. press secretary sean spicer describes those discussions as "routine," saying flynn made another call to the russians as recently as three days ago. >> one call, talked about four subjects. >> reporter: a u.s. intelligence official tells nbc news

into her apartment earlier this morning. it happened in phoenix. the sleeping woman was missed by just inches. most of the front of the apartment was completely destroyed. right now police are investigating how it happened. there are new developments to tell you about regarding brexit. >> britain's supreme court today ruled the government must get approval from parliament before starting the process of leaving the european union. nbc's lucy cav anna reports from london about what it all means. >> the supreme court rules the government cannot trigger article 50 without an act of parliament authorizing it to do so. >> reporter: this was a setback for the government, but one they were prepared for and quite frankly it's not going to change much when it comes to brexit. just to be clear, this ruling wasn't about whether or not brexit will happen. it will. but rather, about the legal process of how britain will leave the european union. can theresa may, the prime minister, begin this on her own or will she need to get approval

from parliament? the court ruled that parliament has to weigh in. lawmakers will have to vote on whether or not to trigger something called article 50 of the lisbon treaty. this kicks off a two-year process of effectively negotiating the uk's divorce from europe. d theresa may says she wants to do this by march. they'll have to submit a bill to parliament. the expectation is that it will pass. there was a public vote on whether or not to leave the eu. that makes it difficult for lawmakers to go against the tide. most of may's conservative party at this point supports leaving. and the opposition labor party has said that it won't block article 50, although of course there's always a chance that individual lawmakers may rebel. so it may slow things down a bit in the long run. there will certainly be more discussion of the brexit process. answers the not by any means derailed. nbc news, london. we have a unique new view of pluto today.

nasa has released video of pluto taken at the new horizon spacecraft approached the dwarf planet. the video is made up of more than 100 high resolution images taken over six months as the spacecraft flew by pluto in july of 2015. it took new horizons ten years to cover the 3 billion miles to pluto. all eyes are on hollywood this morning. ahead, a look at the academy award nominations just announced and the film leading the pack. and here is a live look from cape may, new jersey. those wet conditions out there that we're tracking are going to start to move out. the temperatures start to rise. we'll take a closer look, coming up.

the weather will be nice and drier than the picture you see here, looking at the art museum, water droplets all over the camera. the roadways are still pretty wet out there, because following yesterday, we still have the lingering effects of that nor'easter which is now off to our northeast, still chugging along through parts of new england. we're going to start to see this rain move out. it will take a while. on our radar and satellite currently, scattered, light to moderate rain is falling. this is light that's making it to the ground. even lights are turning green on our radar because temperatures are too warm at the surface to see any snow in our area. that's different if you'll be heading farther along the northeast where they are seeing some snow because of this nor'easter. notice the line of rain, clipping right near parts of the lehigh valley then down through bucks county, near philadelphia, and then right into about atlantic city. areas farther along to the west are staying dry at this point. some misty conditions but not the showers anymore. that's going to move off as we go later today into tonight. a closer look at atlantic city

through ship bottom. then tracking from tom's river into monmouth county and farther north, lighter rain hitting the shore points, not something we need after the coastal flooding we saw yesterday. fleetwood, you're at leonardsv. for your current temperature reading, not going to see these values rise much more into your afternoon. for the jersey shore, cape may, 40 degrees, woodbine the same. mays landing, the same. hold gate at 38 degrees for the current temperature. and of course in those areas, same deal, just rain that's falling currently. current wind speeds right around the mid-20s to close to 30 miles per hour. these are your gusts that we're looking at. atlantic city, 29-mile-an-hour gusts. philadelphia, 24. yesterday the gusts were way

stronger, 50 to 60 miles per hour for those peak gusts throughout the entire day. it actually was the main cause of the coastal flooding because those winds were coming in from the southeast. when that happens when you have that onshore flow, it forces those waves inland, which is exactly what we saw. good news is the winds have shifted directions and now they're coming from the northwest. and that does help alleviate the concerns down near the coast as we see high tide later this afternoon. your three-day outlook, temperatures do get better and we finally dry out. today through the afternoon, lingering light rain expected. this is across parts of our neighborhoods, mostly new jersey and philadelphia that we're seeing this. on wednesday, we're sunny. we clear out and we just see clouds redeveloping on thursday. temperature-wise, picking back up, 57 on thursday. 54 in the suburbs, only 40 today. upper 30s in the lehigh valley is where we stay today. up to 50 for tomorrow.
