this one area rotating around through trenton and that will come through lower bucks county and into burlington county over the next couple of hours. looks like it's going to stay just east of philadelphia. we have a couple little showers in some of the western suburbs. the main area of rain is still coming down through toms river and parts of long beach island as the big storm continues to circulate right off shore. so it's gradually moving away. and emphasize the word "gradually." because we still have wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour. 31 at dover air force base. these winds are going to be diminishing during the night. the temperature, 43 degrees, 39 in coatesville. 42 in allentown. so it's pretty cold. but then it's january, it's supposed to be cold. it's not going to cool down that much overnight tonight because there will be a lot of clouds around. the wind will still be a little bit up and so we're not going to see temperatures in the 20s for

the company u.s. facilities that operates the cjc failed to maintain, repair and inspect the elevator that paralyzed lieutenant owens. owens had been in the mcgee rehab center for six months, until today. >> feel a lot better than i did when i first got here. >> reporter: surrounded by his family and colleagues sheriff's lieutenant paul owens said thank you for all the support. >> just trying to get back to regular life. it's hard but part of the process. a long way to go, but i got this far. happy to be going home today, that's all. >> nbc 10 was there august 4th at the criminal justice center in philadelphia after the elevator lieutenant owens was riding in catapulted up through cement barriers. owens suffered critical injuries. he was paralyzed from the waist down. >> we're very cautious even in any elevator since what happened to paul.

>> reporter: sheriff jewell williams says even now the elevators that malfunctioned are still not in service. and for the people who work there -- it is on their minds? >> oh, without a doubt. every day people talk about those elevators. there has been problems in the past with those elevator, but we don't get reports when they have problems. we only get reports when the elevators are down. >> reporter: nbc 10 has been digging into what went wrong for months. so far we've heard the city hired a new inspector since the incident but the actual inspection reports are being withheld until the state labor department concludes its investigation first. for owens, his focus is simple -- moving forward. >> i'm just happy to go home today. i just want to spend time with my family. >> reporter: now, lieutenant owens will continue his intensive rehab every day. the sheriff says if and when he's ready to return to work in whatever capacity, there will be a job for him to do. jacqueline. >> all right, erin. new jersey's governor is praising the efforts of cooper hospital. chris christie was in camden

today about a year after cooper hospital took over ems services in the city. new figures show about 90% of emergency calls in camden are answered within the national guideline of eight minutes. that's up from 70% a year ago. you could soon pay an extra $2 a night to stay in a hotel in atlantic city, that's if assembly speaker vincent prieto has his way. he would add a $2 surcharge to each hotel room in ac. the money would be used to fund police and fire fighting operations in the struggling resort. the civil trial involving this deadly collapse along philadelphia's market street. six people died, 13 others hurt when a building being demolished fell on to a salvation army store in 2013. relatives and survivors filed a lawsuit. among those they're suing, the building's owner, the demolition crew and the salvation army. former pennsylvania congressman chaka fattah is set

to start a prison term tomorrow. he's required to surrender at a prison in western pennsylvania wednesday. he spent 20 years in congress before his conviction last june. the jury found he took an illegal million dollar campaign loan then used government and nonprofit money to repay it. people are getting the chance to sound off about a controversial plan to run a natural gas pipeline through the new jersey pinelands. a public hearing on the plan was held today in pemberton. it would run to cape may county where it would supply a power plant, but it's being fought by environmental groups who fear it would harm the federally protected pinelands. we should know in a couple of days how long the delaware river bridge should be closed. we just got off the phone with the pennsylvania turnpike commission. they plan to unveil a timeline for how long it will take to make repairs. one of the steel supports split in half. the bridge connects the pennsylvania and new jersey turnpikes.

new details tonight on the delair bridge. it's no longer stuck in the air. they got it down today and now they're running tests. it had been stuck since thursday. patco is accepting new jersey transit rail tickets. the pennsylvania state lawmaker wants to raise the state's minimum wage by nearly $3 an hour. today state representative patty kiem introduced the bill. in a year it would go up to $9 and then in a year just over $10. former philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey is taking on a new wolf. tom wolfe today named ramsey the chair of the state's commission on crime and delinquency. he retired from the philadelphia police department last year after serving eight years as commissioner. three years ago president obama chose ramsey to serve as co-chair of his task force on 21st century police force.

charles ramsey began his career as an 18-year-old cadet in the chicago police department back in 1968. bucks county community college is partnering up with bloomsberg university. under the agreement, high school students can earn up to 29 college credits towards a bucks associate degree. it includes admission to blo bloomsburg to complete a bachelor's degree. six schools are included in that project. two hotels are coming to upper darby. one will be here next to the drexelbrook country club. and and on garrett road. those hotels expected to bring about 70 full time and 27 part-time jobs to the township. this just in. video of a massive grass fire burning in oklahoma. you can see several buildings are on fire as well. crews have been battling these flames north of oklahoma city since monday. the winds and dry conditions are making it harder for them to

contain the fire. we'll continue to keep an eye on this situation. erin andrews now says she's cancer free. >> today she revealed she was diagnosed with cervical cancer less than a year ago. she told "sports illustrated" she was diagnosed after a routine checkup. she returned to the nfl sidelines just a few days after her october surgery. last year andrews was awarded a $5 million award in an invasion of privacy settlement. new details on the health of former president george h.w. bush. doctors in houston now say he's sitting up, talking with visitors and doing physical therapy. the 92-year-old is recovering from pneumonia. former first lady barbara bush was released from the same hospital yesterday after being treated for bronchitis. she is back today as a visitor by her husband's side. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with questions over a concert venue in wilmington. >> business owners along market street in downtown wilmington say they need the queen theater

entire area. we're pretty cloudy across the entire area as well. now, the headlines, of course, first thing with the wind, it was so rough yesterday and it was pretty windy today. but it's finally dying down tonight. we have warm temperatures over the next couple of days and then winter returns. and the dry pattern also except for perhaps some thursday morning showers out there. and you can see the swirl around this big storm. so new york still getting a lot of rain. we're just getting a few showers in parts of the area this afternoon. but look at toms river and out through the northern half of long beach island. still getting pounded with rain. ocean county had some of the heaviest rain, close to 3 inches in parts. it does look like it's going to stay mostly in new jersey. it looks like parts of bucks county, lower bucks getting into it and otherwise central and

north jersey. the good news is that the wind direction is that way now, offshore, and so that causes the ocean to calm down. it also causes relatively uniform temperatures. so it's 43 at dennis township, avalon, ocean city, when you have the sea breeze, that's when you see the big difference. some parts of the area are now actually below 20 miles an hour. so it's on its way down. after sunset you'll really notice this. and it's feeling like it's in the 30s, mid-30s in philadelphia, for example. and that again is not bad for this time of the year. the temperatures jumping up into the 50s during the day tomorrow and then as we head toward the end of the week, that's when

it's really going to change. tomorrow we have a beautiful day. dry weather. thursday a front comes through. there could be some showers in the morning especially toward the shore. another round toward the lehigh valley. but by midday we're starting to clear out and that's a mild day, too. then the colder air comes in. look at these numbers for tomorrow afternoon. 55 in fairmount, 52 in shanksville and langhorne. 48 in easton. these are way above arcverage f this time of the year. no rain, sunshine out there, 5 vorhees township, egg harbor township 53, dover at 54, new york, delaware up to 58 degrees. we're seeing a tremendous chamg here. now, as we go through the weekend, things change. it's getting cold again. it will feel like january.

a rude awakening for a family after a tree fell on their home. today crews undertook the delicate task as they tried to remove the tree. no one was hurt. the management company is taking over the queen theater in wilmington. the contract with world cafe live ends in may. the new company plans to continue to use the queen as a music venue. a local museum is giving new meaning to the term viral in its latest exhibition. the philadelphia medical history museum announced plans on a multiyear project about the deadly philadelphia flu pandemic of 1918 and '19. officials at the nutter museum announced plans on the new exhibit on facebook live today. they're hoping to use social media to take people behind the scenes of what it takes to open an exhibit. delaware county's newman university is getting a new dorm. commissioners in ashton township have given it the go ahead. the dorm will house about six students.

43 degrees in philadelphia now. we got a couple of bright spots, but it's still pretty cloudy out there. a little bit of rain in parts of new jersey. we have delaware, cloudy skies. as we look into our neighborhoods in delaware it's 42 in claymont, marshalton, newark, middletown is 42. wind direction, that's a land breeze, so the water gets calmed down at the beaches. and coastal flooding in delaware along with the jersey shore. now, you can see on the radar here we do still have some issues and these issues are mostly in new jersey. we have a little bit of bucks county, too. you got this band here that isn't really moving very much. so some places just keep getting this rain hour after hour. especially around tom's river and parts of lbi. this area already had the

gretest amount of rain in any part of our region. and now they're getting more. there is the trenton mercy county rains spilling into lower bucks county and also into burlington county. that's a steady rain that is continuing. these are not steady rains but these are showers coming through parts of delaware county and into parts of gloucester and camden counties right now just as we have the afternoon rush. of course, nothing like yesterday. we're gusting to 32 miles per hour now in millville. 31 in philadelphia. so still pretty windy out there. of course, not as windy as it was yesterday when we had gusts over 60 miles per hour. tomorrow's a beautiful day. thursday things change a little bit. still going to be unseasonably warm. a few showers may develop in the morning especially toward the shore. and then another few later on

during the morning. you can see, that's not all that impressive. we're talking about temperatures into the mid-50s. that is pretty impressive. that's way above average. average is 40. so here we are tomorrow, 48 in bethlehem. 50 degrees in reading. what a change from yesterday. phoenixville with 52, newtown at 52 degrees. no rain in any of these places tomorrow. farther to the south a little bit warmer, haddonfield getting rain this afternoon. 55 tomorrow. no rain. trenton with the 51. they're getting pounded today with the rain. atlantic city at 50 degrees and in delaware, mid to upper 50s. so a couple of really mild days ahead. >> all right, glenn, sounds good. they're more than just social clubs. they're pieces of history. >> self-local vfw posts are in danger of closing in montgomery county. how local vets who have already

you don't know what we've been through. >> he does find comfort in talking with his fellow veterans. this vfw post in rally forge was built by collins and his father-in-law. over the years membership declined, but recently more and more veterans and members have gone away. >> it could happen at any vfw. the reasons could be declining interest, older members dying off and younger vet just not joining. >> we have clothing drives. we raise goods to send over to the military overseas. >> it's not just military support the club provides. they provide support to all organizations in the area. hanging on the wall here, pictures of little league teams that have been supported in the past. this year, however, there's just not enough money. and while the group wants to attract younger veterans, its jaups not happening. it is working to raise money, attract members and even use social media to promote upcoming fund-ra fund-raisers. >> i'm bound and determined to keep this club open. >> deanna durante, nbc 10 news.
