perspective how it's unfolding. they did tell us this person skyforce 10 saw rushed out on a gurney, that person was a hostage and suffered what they're saying is a nonlife-threatening injury. police don't know or at least not saying, the condition of other hostages inside. families wondering if their loved ones are okay. the place is on lockdown. staffers are not allowed to carry cell phones to work to call home. >> i know have i friends who have family who work in here. i have friends actually my age working here. it's kind of nerve-racking. >> reporter: to come back live, there's not a onto see out here. there's flashing lights here. it's tough to see. really, a lot of it is happening inside the prison camp. it's kind of like a small college. i wish we could walk closer to look at the situation, but we're not allowed to do so.

police do say they'll provide hourly updates. to make sure no one gets hurt. stay with us on the nbc10 app or on air. new at 6:00, tim, a phone call from inside that prison. >> delaware news journal said this is audio from the hostage. >> i don't know who's taking me hostage. >> i can help, man, we just need. >> the calmer also said the inmates were complaining about improper sentencing orders and seemed to mention other reform measures but most of that call is difficult to understand. >> the nbc10 investigators are digging into security in that prison. we're going to tell you why prison officials have been touting security improvements. that's coming up at 6:15.

president trump made an unexpected trip from the white house to the first state. >> the president and his daughter ivanka came to dover air force base to pay respects to u.s. service members overseas. >> well, the president took part on marine one from the white house this afternoon. the trip was unannounced. was not on his daily schedule. we later learned that his destination was here at the dover air force base in delaware, to honor the returning remains of a navy s.e.a.l. killed in combat earlier this week. marking the first combat under the new administration. the president was joined by his daughter ivanka along with delaware senator chris coons. air force media officials tell nbc10 the family of the navy s.e.a.l. asked that the ceremony be private. keefe warrant officer williams ryan owens was killed sunday in yeme

yemen. he was 36 years old. the defense department first of the trump presidency was targeting an al qaeda compounds. three other navy s.e.a.l.s also injured in that raid. an american girl, 8 years old, who is the daughter of an al qaeda leader was also killed in that fire fire. dover air force base has been the point where injured and killed service members arrive here for the ceremonies. the navy said that owens was a beloved father and a husband as well. we're live in dover, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. tonight, the parents of a berks county toddler are facing manslaughter charges in their daughter's death because they did not take her to the doctor's when she had pneumonia. the girl died inside their house in bethel here. the parents are members of the faith tabernacle church based in

harrisburg. they don't believe in medicine. but the d.a. said they had a duty to their daughter. >> pennsylvania law, pennsylvania cases does not recognize religion as an extension to the duty of care, protection or support. >> the parents are out on bail, back at home with their six other children. the d.a. tells us children and youth services are supervising, making sure the children receive medical care when it's needed. a scare for shoppers outside of a delaware county mall. police were called to the cristian that mall this afternoon, they say there was a fight between two people on a bus outside of that mall. video shows officers that the scene. the person stabbed is expected to be okay. and police took the other person in custody. exclusive video from skyforce 10 shows men accused of

kidnapping a woman in kensington. the woman is safe right now but we learned police have tied the kidnappers to a series of home invasions. and the victim says they planned to hold her for ransom. officers are still looking for three more people. new details in the big cosby case. later this month, the judge will consider cosby's request to move the trial out of montgomery county. they will have a hearing on the request. if the trial cannot be moved, cosby wants the trial somewhere other than montgomery county. his trial is set for june. from the jersey shore bureau, atlantic city firefighters are scrapping plans to sue over threatened layoffs. the firefighter's union withdraw a federal lawsuit to lay off 118 firefighters. the threatened layoffs were part of the state's takeover of atlantic city's finances. in bucks county, a new

report details five cases of sex abuse at a boarding school. that report released this morning describes the culture of concealment, from the 1950s to 2005, describe aing abuse by teachers. prosecutors can only prosecute one of the cases. there is new life that would give child sex abuse victims more time to seek justice. the bill was eliminated in child sex abuse indication and it would extend the time allowed for civil cases to be filed. the legislation died last year but the pennsylvania senate reintroduced it today. new reports say pennsylvania schools are treading water. the reports surveys 361 districts. they found many districts found

their financial picture improve. but 70% predict they will have to raise property taxes this year. and nearly all anticipate their financial conditions will be the same or worse. right now at 6:00, president trump says he wants the senate to go nuclear, if necessary, to get his supreme court nomination confirmed. last night, the president nominate, neil gorsuch to fill the vacant court seat. under normal rules, 60 votes would be needed to get that pick confirmed but since there are only 52 republicans in the senate, congressional leaders could take the so-called nuclear option. then they would need only 51 voted. today, the president supported taking that nuclear approach. >> that would be an absolute shame if a man of this quality was calls up ught up in a web. >> tonight, lauren mayk is

>> i think what the republicans did to block that was really undemocratic. >> reporter: democrats pushing back against gorsuch's approach to the constitution. >> he's not a man for these times. >> reporter: at the diner, she said the court was on top of her mind when she voted for donald trump but she liked the choice. >> i thought it would be somebody from philadelphia or pennsylvania, but trump is trump. and he can select whoever he wants. and now they may pass his name with flying colors. >> reporter: with a republican in the white house for the first time in eight years, some are thinking longer terms. regina voted for president trump. >> i think it would be great to kind of even the playing field on the supreme court. >> reporter: but she does expect a fight. i'm lauren mayk, nbc10 news.

the senate this afternoon confirmed donald trump's secretary of state rex tillerson. tillerson said he would reexcuse himself for one year from issues impacting the oil company. a main line teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student at school property, parks and at her home. she was a counselor at radnor township. she no longer works at the school. and police say she carried out a relationship for nearly eight months that involved trips to the girl's home in chester county. tracking roller coaster temperatures and when we're going to be plummeting down again and coming back up, my "first alert" neighborhood forecast. the most accurate in philadelphia. a familiar sight at the jersey shore for decades. now being brought down. >> everybody knows it. >> i'm ted greenberg, why this

>> announcer: this is nbc10 news. an update to the breaking news we've been following this afternoon out of delaware. >> four corrections officers have been held hostage inside the james t. vaughn corrections center in smyrna. prison officials say one worker was set free and taken to the hospital. they're expected to be okay. no other word on the other hostages. and now the situation back at the prison, back in 2004, an inmate took an officer and sexually assaulted her. after seven hours, officers shot and killed the inmate. it's the only death row inmate it's.

there are 13 inmates on death row. the security also houses minimum and medium security inmates. it has a system to log guards on pa patrol. to the jersey shoreline. >> and marshland is dismantling a huge field. >> ted greenberg tells us why it's being removed from the shore landscape. >> reporter: rising from the marshland, they've been a familiar sight for voters on barn th barnegat bay. some 500 pillars and towers coming down in berkeley township. >> return as much as we can to nature. >> reporter: the antenna field dates back to the early 1930s.

>> it's an historic place. >> reporter: the unusual landmark part of an old at&t ship-to-shore radio communications system activated here in 1999. the decaying equipment started falling down after hurricane sandy hit the area. >> it's for birds, kind of like a death trap for them because of all of the wires. >> reporter: and rather than heavy machinery deployed to avoid damaging the marsh, the poles being cut at ground level instead of pulled down. >> a lot of habitat here. >> reporter: 18 of the poles will be left in place. they'll be cut down to 14-feet high and used as nesting site it's for osprey. >> those remains poles, we've already kind of prechecked to make sure they're in good shape. >> reporter: clearing the poles will take about two months. >> it's going to really be so

better connect. the mayor met 21 members. mayor kenney said he needs their ideas to help make the city a better place to life. the weather, a live look from broad street. not too cold tonight, but temperatures are going to be dropping soon, right? >> oh, yeah, in a couple days we're going to be deep into winter temperatures. and it's not going to last and that's been the wirngnter of th story so far. we have conditions here, 45, temperatures above average, 47, and 41 degrees in allentown. it was freezing yesterday. and it's in the 40s just about everywhere else. including in delaware, where it's 44. greenville, newark, 43, glasco, 42 in middletown. not much wind here today.

40 degrees in georgetown, milton. a little warmer, 43, from lewis all the way down to bethany. and not much on radar either. a couple of snowflakes in the poconos and that was about it. and even that is pretty much moving out. well, january's over, and we have yet another month of way above average temperatures. 5 1/2 degrees above average. and allentown, that's nearly 7 degrees above average. that's the eighth warmest january ever recorded in allentown. and by comparison, to last january, which was barely above average. tomorrow, above average temperatures, even though colder air is going to be moving in. so it won't be as mild today. 50, reading at 39, bethlehem at 38. looks like it's dry. breezy, 10 to 20-mile-per-hour
