>> i'm sheinelle jones. >> you are back? i'm hyped. it will be a good weekend. >> let's go to the top story this morning. a defeat in court overnight for president trump and his travel ban. a federal judge temporarily putting it on hold. the white house vowing to fight back. nbc's kelly o'donnell is outside the florida estate. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. this has put a sudden uncertainty into the president trump's immigration plan and extreme vetting. a court from the unlikely part of the country acted and everyone from the white house to the airlines to the customs officials are asking what does it mean and what comes next? making his first visit as president to his florida home. donald and melania trump share a palm beach weekend. all things trump, it won't be quiet.

late friday, a seattle based federal judge dealt the trump white house a blow. >> this is in the public interest. >> reporter: that court blocked the enforcement of the seven-country travel ban with a temporary restraining order after washington and minnesota challenged it in court. >> the law is a powerful thing. it has the ability to hold everybody accountable to it. that includes the president of the united states. >> reporter: after 10:00 p.m., the white house press secretary pushed back with a statement. the department of justice inn tinds to file an emergency stay of the outrageous order. inn visiting the president's order is intended to protect the homeland. ten minutes later, the white house took out the word outrageous that had described the order. mr. trump's executive order prompted days of protest around the country. top senate democrat chuck schumer was quick calling the

ruling a victory for the constitution. adding this unamerican executive order will not make us safer. in his new weekly address recorded before the court acted, donald trump defended from seven muslim countries. >> the executive order establishes a process of new vetting and new mechanisms to ensure those coming into america love and support our people. that they have good intentions. >> reporter: the president also tweeted friday we must keep evil out of country. another surprise for president trump on a holy different subject. his very first nominee has withdrawn. vincent viola who is a west point graduate and billionaire businessman has decided he no longer wants to be in consideration to be secretary of the army. this morning, defense secretary mattis has said he is disappointed, but understands. there was no reason given by the

white house for why viola has withdrawn. also, craig, president trump has some business on his agenda in his home office. he plans to speak with leaders from italy and ukraine. part of a working saturday at mar-a-lago. craig. >> kelly from florida this morning. thanks. let's turn back now to the federal court ruling putting a hold on the president's travel ban. let's bring in pete williams. our justice p correspondent. pete, what is the judge's ruling for the reason and why did it involve washington state and minnesota? >> this was a lawsuit filed by washington state and minnesota. they argued it hurt the citizens and their high tech industries. people who rely on free travel to sell products and bring in talented employees. they said this order was illegal and unconstitutional. they asked the judge to stop while it plays out in court. judge james robard. he said there is no support for

the president trump administration claim there is no protection from the people who want to come here from the countries covered by the order. iran, iraq, somalia and sudan and yemen. he issued this order. >> pete, what is the immediate effect? does this mean people with travel? >> the immediate effect is more confusion. it took the administration four days to make clear what the order did. now it is trying to find out what this ruling means. the u.s. officials were saying in the hours after the ruling it would not change anything immediately. all of the visas granted before the executive order went into effect were canceled by the order. they said anybody who now wants to come will have to get another visa and that will take a while. there's confusion about the effect of the ruling on refugees. it does apply to that executive order too. >> with that said, what's next? >> first of all, we hope a clear

statement from the government on what this means on immigrants who want to come here and students and others already here who want to go home and come back. we should know soon when the justice department will go to the ninth circuit court of appeals to get the ruling put on hold. this process is going to keep happening. there are nine lawsuits in court now. more will be filed next week. friday brought two contradictory rulings. one in seattle and one in boston. the president did have the authority to issue the order. we will be in for several more weeks of stops and starts. it is possible the president's executive order will wind up before the u.s. supreme court. i don't know if that will happen in time for decision this term. >> pete williams, thank you. not just foreign poll circumstance but as we mentioned the trump administration reshaping relationships with the business and banking world. president trump signed executive order friday that is making many

on wall street quite happy. our friend stephanie ruhle is a former wall street executive and now is on msnbc. >> good morning. >> this is your lane. >> good to see you. >> let's start with dodd-frank. you have a president who ran on the populous message. he stocks his cabinet with people from goldman sachs. yesterday with the executive action. he starts to rollback dodd-frank. created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. was dodd-frank a disaster? does reshaping it help the working class? >> it was not a disaster. the reason dodd-frank was put in place is because of the financial crisis. banks took massive risks and the american people had to bail them out. yesterday, the former president of goldman sachs gary kohn, the white house economic advisor said we have the most highly capitalized banks, but we are

overregulated and overburdened. he left out the reason the banks have the reserves is because of the regulation. you want to have this protection. in the event of a crisis, the banks are secure. for the last seven years, we have not had a crisis. we have been steadily improving. to say take the training wheels off and rev up the engine is not a good idea. maybe it needs to be tweaked. maybe the regulation went too far. it needs adjustment. not just tear it up. >> on that note, let's talk about jobs. president inheriting the job market. labor department releasing 227,000 jobs added in january. more than expected. give us context here. give us reality check on where the economy is right now for president trump. >> when the unemployment number is 4.8%, that's a really good number. you are asking yourself why are so many americans saying i can't make ends meet. i can't pay tuition.

i have two jobs. the issue is wages and skills. maybe people just aren't paid enough. this is the argument of minimum wage. today, ceos, the disparity of what they are paid and the workers pay is never greater. craig, if you learn to be an auto mechanic, open a hood of a car today. it looks likes a computer. it is not just a transmission or carburetor. you don't have the skills. we need to train americans so they can get the jobs that pay more. >> late friday night, president trump tweeted this. i believe we have the tweet. this is countries charge taxes or tariffs and the u.s. charges nothing or little. we should charge the same as they charge us. we heard about a looming trade war. do tweets suggest the president is doing just that? >> this is what has ceos nervous. on one level, i'll cut taxes and
