65 degrees outside. these warm temperatures are going to disappear fast. by tonight, many areas dropping to the 30s and then the snow starts moving in. we told you this week was going to be a roller coaster ride, and the biggest drop of all starts tonight. i'm keith jones. >> i'm erin coleman. going from 60s to snow in a matter of hours and we want to make sure you're ready for the big change. the weather team is tracking the totals, the timing, and temperatures for your neighborhood, and randy gyllenhaal will join us from one area that could see the most snow. >> let's start with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. give us an update on when the snow starts and where. >> well, up in the lehigh valley, burks county, could start shortly after midnight. the peak of this storm is going to be right during the morning rush. and that's part of the problem with it, not the biggest storm we have ever seen. it's limited in time, but right in the morning rush, and we haven't had anything like this this season. 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. for the peak,

at the peak, 2 to 3 inches per hour, with thundersnow possible. visibility cut down. the snow covered roads. even though the roads are warm right now, when snow is falling at a fast rate, it can stick. now, during the night, the snow is coming over. it might start as rain, especially in the philadelphia area, but change over by 6:00 a.m., when it gets to be the heaviest. and then it starts piling up. for several hours, 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., and then it's ending from west to east. so it's really going to taper off fast. it's going to end fast. only a part of the day is going to be really difficult, but at the peak of this storm, it's going to be beyond difficult, may not be able to travel for at least a couple hours. 6 to 10 inches in general over the northern yare uz, just about

all snow. 4 to 8 inches in wilmington to philly, up to trenten because some will be snow and some will be rain, and more rain than snow farther to the south. we'll get into the neighborhood totals a little later. >> the lehigh valley could see the most snow from this. >> people in allentown are hoping the city has made some changes since the last big storm. you might remember last year's blizzard. dumped nearly 32 inches and left people digging out for days. >> randy gyllenhaal is live in allentown tonight. what's the city's plan this time around to clear the streets? >> well, it's a tale of two winters. last winter, these trucks got a workout, more than 30 inches of snow in a single day. so far this winter, all season, crews have only to clean up 2.9 inches snow total. so the plow truck drivers are itching to get to work, and this week, they might get some overtime. at the public works yard, it's a recipe for winter.

load up on brine, add a of salt, make sure we're good to go, sometimes you need repairs. >> greg and his team will hit the streets by midnight to big roads first. then smaller neighborhoods where they're asking people at home to pitch in. >> don't take the snow that you have on the side and put it in the street. when you're shoveling your car out, try to put it to the side a little bit. >> allentown once in the bull's eye. last year, 31 inches fell in a blizzard clogging tight neighborhoods where plows had trouble squeezing by. >> you get so much snow, like, you're snowed in because it took two days to shovel out my car last year. >> they say even ten inches will cause major problems on her block, and she has to get to work. >> i have to go. i'm a hosnurse so i have to be there. >> across town at cedar creek park, the snowing hill hasn't seen a soul all season. brandon hoping to trade in his scooter for a toboggan tomorrow.

>> see if we can get sleds out of storage and go down the hill. >> for now, people out enjoying the last of the sunshine. local schools could close tomorrow. the city urging people who don't have to work to stay home. >> you know, if you have a chance to take the day off, take it day off and enjoy some snow. >> back here live at the plow yard, we still have clear blue skies. still pretty warm out, but thas going to change in the next few hours. meantime, the city does say they're going to try to do trash pickup tonight in allentown to start to clear the streets. they'll have more than 40 plows on the roads tonight into the morning. live in allentown, randy gyllenhaal. >> thank you so much. let's take a live look at 95, roads looking normal right now, but just like where randy was in allentown, the first of the weather team has been telling to avoid driving while the snow is at its worst tomorrow morning. pendot is ready to roll to get the roads clear as soon as possible. nbc 10 at the salt yard in norristown today as the trucks were loaded up.

pen dot has more than 300 trucks prepared to hit the roads at any time. >> philadelphia streets department is revving up for its snow plan as well. it has 50,000 tons of salt ready to spread on the roads. 350 trucks will be plowing the streets, and if there isn't any trash pickup tomorrow, you're going to have to wait until next week. >> a warning for drivers already dealing with traffic problems in mercer and bucks counties. the bridge commission tells us to expect major delaysige the morning on the trenton morrisville bridge and scutter bridge. they suggest you don't travel, but if you have to, allow for extra time. there's already congestion because of the delaware river bridge closed. we've been telling you how temperatures are going to drop a lot over the next few hours. >> some areas may have trouble getting cold enough for snow. krystal klei is taking a closer look neighborhood by neighborhood. >> that's right. at least at first, too warm for us to see snow. some areas beginning as rain and flipping over. it's pretty obvious why. if you walked out, you maybe

were like me, sleeveless, because you didn't need a jacket. look at the numbers. these aren't the highest we saw. we're at 61 in philadelphia, and upper 50s in the pennsylvania suburbs. through new jersey, mid 50s, even the lehigh valley, and 62 in delaware, just to put it in perspective, we set records for warmth today in wilmington, philadelphia, atlanta city, in redding. we could keep going on here, allentown, mt. pocono. records all over the. but let's talk temperatures as we move throughout the night. 59 around 6:00. we're almost there currently. 40s by 10:00 p.m., and there you go, 34 at 6:00 a.m. this is right in the time slot we're going to see heavy rain start turning to heavy snow at 6:00 a.m. as well on the cusp of freezing. look at areas like the suburbs, already right at freezing, at 6:00 a.m. through the lehigh valley as well, even delaware and new jersey, getting close by 6:00 a.m. so coming up in a few minutes, to time this out hour by hour through the storm to let you know what to expect in your

maria, pulled from the rubble 13 hours after the collapse and lost both of her legs. her friend daria talking about what life is like for the native of ukraine. >> maria used to be very independent, very outgoing person. and for her, this is a very big challenge to adjust to this new maria. >> attorneys for the plaintiffs declined to say how much each of the defendants including the salvation army will pay in the multimillion dollar settlement. the salvation army releasing a statement saying, quote, our deepest sympathy remains with the victims and their families through this extremely difficult time. we pray for the healing of our community. they continue to serve those in need with compassion as we have for more than 137 years in philadelphia. for families like those of rose aln, the journey brings some gratitude. >> we're glad that laws have been put in place to help other lives from falling victim. >> but it doesn't fill the void.

president trump's pick for attorney general appears to be headed toward confirmation in a matter of hours. the senate working overtime right now to get there. a live picture right noum from capitol hill. the senate has been worthing around the clock toward confirming jeff sessions. a vote on session is scheduled to happen at 7:00 this evening. the alabama senator is expected to be confirmed as the nation's top law enforcement officer, but the vote is likely to be along party lines. democrats have criticized sessions for being too close to the president, too harsh on immigrants, and too weak on civil rights. president trump had harsh words today for the lawyers and judges involved in deciding whether to reinstate his immigration travel ban. trump defended it while speaking to a group of police chiefs this

morning. a federal judge has put the ban on hold. now, an appeals court is considering an appeal from the trump administration. the president says he had the right to enact the travel restriction. >> and i don't ever want to call a court biased, so i won't call it biased, and we haven't had a decision yet. but courts seem to be so political. >> that federal appeals court said it would not issue a ruling today. the president's travel ban was the subject of a demonstration that began at the university of pennsylvania today. this group of penn students marched from campus to senator pat toomey's center city office. they're calling on republican senator to change his position. you can add nordstrom to the list of companies president trump hassed out on twitter. nordstrom announced it would no

longer carry ivanka trump's line of clothing and accessories. mr. trump tweeted this out this morning, quote, my daughter ivanka has been treating unfairly by nordstrom. she's a great person, always puggish me to do the right thing. terrible, end quote. >> the pennsylvania senator bob casey replied to mr. trump's tweet by retweeting it and cc'ing the office of government ethics twitter handle. a spokesperson issued a statement saying senator casey feels it is unethical and inappropriate for the president to lash out at a private company for refusing to enrich his family. the office of government ethics has not responded. >> a controversial abortion bill in pennsylvania cleared the senate this afternoon. it would ban abortions at 20 weeks. that's four weeks earlier than the current law. the bill still needs to go through the house. governor tom wolf can veto the bill. he called it, quote, radical and unconstitutional. the local skew has a new mascot. today, the red clay school

district announced the conrad schools of science in wilmington will be named the red wolves. the name change was chosens as part of a student vote. here's the new logo. it comes after the school board voted last year to remove the name redskins from the school. >> happening now, philadelphia school reform commission is holding a special meeting. they plan to volt on four new charter school applications. residents is comment on the issue before the vote. >> in mercer county, one of three vacancies in trenton's board of education now filled. they appointed heather watson to the board. she's a lifetime resident of trenton and works as a government specialist. no word on when the other two aenlss will be filled. >> back now to our first alert weather. this is a live picture at centre city philadelphia, right now, 61 degrees. not for long. temperatures taking a nose dive, and then the snow arrives.

at weaver's ace hardware, they have the salt, the shovels. they're ready to go. the manager expects business to pick up later tonight. don't wait too long to make sure you're ready for the storm. tomorrow morning is the time to watch, driving could be very dangerous in many areas. >> nbc10 has the most accurate forecast for your neighborhood. let's get the latest from first alert meteorologist krystal klei. >> we're talking about temperatures 30 degrees lower in just 12 hours. here's your radar and satellite. this is the snow we're tracking. it's headed our direction. as we go into tomorrow morning, it sidelilines up perfectly wit morning rush. here are our concerns. looking at heavy snow from 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. right when you're usually getting out the door for work or school. snow rates at times could be up to 2 to 3 inches an hour. that is some seriously heavy snow. and thundersnow is possible well. on top of that, when you have heavy snow, you've got visibility issues. less than a quarter mile

visibility means very difficult to drive, and more than just a very slow snail's pace, and snow covered roads as well, when you get snow coming that heavily, even if the ground is warm from today, snow on top of snow starts to stick, and you begin getting that accumulation. here is the hour by hour forecast. we're starting at 2:00 a.m. that's when we start to creep in some of the snow near parts of burks county, chester county, and the lehigh valley. this is where we will first see snow. you see by 4:00 a.m., starting to spread more into the philly area as well as new jersey, but mostly as rain or maybe a rain/snow mix through philadelphia. but as we get to 6:00 a.m. starting to get into that morning rush, thor blues you see on the board, that's the heavy snow beginning. it's extending right into philly, starting to turn the rain to snow in parts of new jersey and delaware as well, through new castle and kent county. we continue 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and now we're in the thick of it, stim looking at very

steady, evy snowfall rate. this is the problem. we're talking good accumulation in a short amount of time, which means that it's going to be difficult to drive in these hours. if you can, it's either get to work very early or maybe postpone, hard to hear, i know, but until later in the day. this is going to start moving off by around your lunch time. we're seeing lighter snow, and then it completely starts to move offshore as we get later into the afternoon. we could see sunshine later in the day. here's the temperature plunge. this is impressive. 8:00, we should make it to the low 50s. we're in the low 60s right now. talking a couple hours and we're dropping to the 50s. 40s through the overnight. there's 2:00 a.m., now at 41. then there you goerse 30s in the a.m. hours, by 6:00 a.m., 34. that's low enough to start seeing it change to snow for the morning commute. here's snow totals. look at the legend at the top. purple, 6 to 10 hours. cutes, allentown, looking at the

higher accumulations. the pink color, 4 to 8 inches. westchester, right on the cusp, coatesville, brookhaven, and philadelphia, we're looking at 4 to 8 inches. that continues into mercer county and the trenton area as well. and it extends down into new yu jersey. gloucester county, camden county, 4 to 8 inches. this extends through shore points near ocean county as well. you can see tom's river under that pink. we start going lower as we get farther south. the blue, 2 to 4 inches. through hamilton, vineland, bridgeton. tell wear as well, middle town into smyrna and all the way south. cape may county to atlantic county, looking at a coating to 2 inches of snow in the forecast for tomorrow. remember, with things moving out as we get to noon. so there's a quick peek at your 10-day. this is the good news. we dry out pretty quickly. friday, though, is bitterly cold. only for a high. and then we warm up for the weekend. >> bottom line, 5:00 to 9:00,

when the major stuff is going to come down, when you don't want to be on the roadways. you should cancel plans. going to start as rain, though. people shouldn't let their guards down. >> that's the thing, i know people right now are probably not even believing us. it was 60 or 70 in some spots, but we'll see a quick temperature drop. even if you look out the window in the morning when you're just waking up and hopping out of the shower, it's rain right now, it's going to turn over quickly. it can going to be heavy so that starts picking up on the roadways and becomes a hazard. >> thanks so much. >> and coming up next at 5:00, technology in the classroom. how delaware is helping more students have a future in computers.

records one day to snow the next. but it has happened before. the last time it happened was about ten years ago. 68 degrees one day, several inches of snow the next. likely to happen again. heaviest snow between 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. during the morning rush. snowing at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. snow plows can't keep up with that. thundersnow is possible, and of course, visibility very low and roads can get snow covered, even a day after 66 degrees that we had today. here's 4:00 a.m. you see the snow starting in redding and pretty close to allentown. a little mixture near the philadelphia area. but that does not last. cold air is coming down from the north. that's going to help change rain to snow. the darker blue indicating heavier snow. covering a good bit of the area. at 6:00 a.m., and by 9:00 a.m., it's still relatively heavy, but you can see the lighter colors

now. by redding, 10:00 a.m., allentown already tapering off. you're going to be finished with your accumulating snow, redding and allentown, by about 10:00 a.m. in the philadelphia area, finished with the accumulation by about noon. and at the shore, early afternoon. so that area will take a little longer to finish. but the greatest amounts of snow, where it's going to be just about all snow, 6 to 10 inches, lehigh valley, berks county, upper chester, 4 to 8 inches in and around the philadelphia, trenton, wilmington corridors because of the combination of rain and snow. we'll get into the neighborhood amounts coming up. >> looking forward to that. meanwhile, with such mild winter so far, you might be missing some essential gear. >> aundrea cline-thomas joins us from stanley pchs hardware store. they have stuff for all the seasons right now really. >> yeah, absolutely. take a look at this shelf. they're clearing out the shelves.

these temperatures are going to plunge. a major snow storm is on the way between 5:00 and 9:00 in the morning. stay tuned to our first alert weather team for the latest. >> meantime, i want it tell you about a school in atlantic county. imploring parents about a stabbing that happened on one of their buses. the principal at the school sent a letter home to parents. the letter says a student brought a knife on a bus yesterday morning. and another student was stabbed. we don't know how seriously the student was injured or how old the students are. philadelphia's district attorney will launch a conviction review unit to investigate innocence claims. seth williams said no specific cases motivated this new division. he simply said it's the practice. and the right thing to do. facing re-election in the spring, he dismissed questions about whether the task force launch was politically motivated. >> while these are very few and far between, these types of cases, the thought that anyone would be in jail a day for

this just in to us here at nbc10 news, with the storm approaching philadelphia, now declaring a snow emergency. it takes effect at midnight tonight. and what it means for you is that all parked cars must be moved off snow emergency routes for plowing, cars that are left on snow emergency routes will be towed. in springfield, a teenage hockey player has died from a head injury. nick bond complained of a headache and later collapsed after playing a game at the wissahickon stadium club on saturday. doctors tried to relieve the pressure in his brain, but he died the next day after complications from a blow to the head. >> a pennsylvania judge finalized a billion dollar settlement to the nfl's concussion lawsuit. the u.s. district judge urged

heavy snow at times, may make cameras like this one that have a long view hard to see through because at points, visibility is going to drop with heavier snow. so let's talk about it. this is your storm intensity forecast. starting at 5:00, we're looking at between the moderate to heavy rain/snow mix. you see the icon here, expected, we could see sleet as this is turning over. temperatures dropping around 5:00 a.m. by 7:00 a.m., though, heavy snow falling, and that's when you have low visibility as well as that accumulation quickly starting to pile up. now, i know that we're warm today. you think the ground is warm, and it will be, but when you start getting snow stacking up that quickly, snow upon snow means accumulation and quickly. and we stay around heavy falling snow through 9:00 a.m. so it's not a long lived snow storm for us, but it's long enough for us to see the considerable accumulation. look how quickly we drop off. 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we have light snow to nothing as it

starts to move on out. let's track it here. here's the hour by hour. 2:30 in the morning, lehigh valley, burks county, starting to see some snow develop. this is as temperatures are falling. we should see the snow start to move through, but more of a mix. you see in chester county, delco, into philadelphia, and some rain farther south. but as we go to 6:00 a.m., we're starting the morning commute now. this is why we're under a first alert. we see the deeper blue. that'sy snow that's starting to develop, and it's even starting to mix into parts of new jersey and northern delaware. let's continue. now we're at 9:00 a.m. still a steady to heavy snow in areas. this is when we're really piling on the snow, meaning snowy roadways and low visibility are an issue right through the morning rush. there it goes, go. we start to weaken, lighter snow out of burks county by 1:00 in the afternoon, and by the rest of the afternoon, totally pulling out, we could even see a little sun as we get into the afternoon hours for some areas. once this is out, it's out, but

we have already felt the effects. so here's your storm impact scale. high impacts, lehigh valley, burks and the suburbs. the heaviest no from 3:00 to 9:00 a.m., which is why we see the highest accumulations, 6 to tinchs in the zone. low visibility is going to be a big factor for the morning rush. in philadelphia, northern delaware and new jersey, also a high impact event. snow starting 5:00 to 7:00 a.m., but the heaviest snow with the 4 to 8 inch accumulation expected and the same concern for roadways. delaware beaches and sknrursy shore, more of a low impact. that's where the snow will start later and begin as rain. a coating to two inches of snow on grassy surfaces as this moves out in the early afternoon. so as we look at your ten-day on 10, what we're tracking here, temperatures at 36 degrees for your thursday, and very windy as well. feels like temperatures dropping down into the teens. watch as we go through your

30 degrees. then the snow will start piling up. >> a team of meteorologists and reporters set to cover what is set to become the biggest snow storm this winter. glen hurricane schwartz is tracking the weather for where you live. >> this is going to be a very unusual snow storm that's going to be very intense for a very short period of time, compared to the average snow storm. but that intensity is coming right at the morning rush. kind of worst time, 5:00 to 9:00 a.m. will be the worst of it. at that point, 2 to 3 inches per hour at the peak of the storm, with thundersnow possible, low visibility, snow covered roads, at the height of this storm tomorrow morning, nobody is going anywhere. and the areas that are getting the heavy snow. here it comes. from the west, starting off as snow. redding and allentown, but rain or a mixture towards the philadelphia area. that makes it harder to pretreat because of this
