we'll check it out. and al will have our forecast. that is our top story this morning. could see the biggest snow totals of the season here in the northeast. our team is spread out across the region. let's start with "today" national correspondent, craig melvin, just a few blocks to our north in central park. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the snow just started a few hours ago. but it is piling up quickly and making for the messy commute. here's the thing. what a difference a day makes. just yesterday, folks were walking around central park in shorts and t-shirts. now, here we are in the middle of a nasty snowstorm. it may be the nastiest winter storm of the season. snow, already falling in some spots this morning. but blizzard-like conditions are expected to ramp up quickly. overnight, salt trucks getting roads ready for a messy morning commute. but in many places, drivers are

being urged to stay off of the roads altogether. before the storm started, airlines canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. >> i told my boss, i'll see you monday, unless i get snowed in. i was being facetious at the time. >> reporter: the snow set to impact millions in the northeast. just one day earlier, the calm before the storm. washington, d.c., baltimore, philadelphia and new york city, saw record-high temperatures. the warmth, now getting blown away. temperatures expected to drop as much as 30 degrees. new england, still recovering from an ice storm that hit the region 24 hours earlier. in massachusetts, a sheet of ice caused a 55-car pileup along a highway. >> you hear one after another slamming into each other. >> reporter: cars and people losing traction. >> my god. are you okay? >> reporter: now, bracing for another impact. >> if you have a chance to take

the day off, take the day off and enjoy some snow. >> reporter: they've already canceled schools here in new york city. they've canceled schools in boston. and check this out. this is flight aware's misery map. at last check, some 3,300 flights had been canceled. look at the northeast, especially you can see the airport specifically where this storm is starting to have a dramatic effect. this is only going to get worse as the day goes on, guys. >> all right, craig. thank you very much. let's head 100 miles southwest to philadelphia where heavy snow is also falling. indra petersons is there. >> reporter: winter is here. just yesterday, temperatures were 25 degrees above normal. we set a record here in philly, at 66 degrees. and now, this. heavy snow falling down. let me tell you who is happy

about this -- the ski resorts. let's show you a camera out towards camelback, where they are expecting eight to ten inches. here in philly, we're expecting the snow to come down. here's the key, though. just about an hour ago, this was all heavy rain. and these roads, they're not treated. now, we're going into morning rush hour. anything underneath this. the temperatures were 40 degrees. we're down to about 32. with that, we have a little layer of ice underneath here, with no salt on the roads and a lot of traffic headed on to our roadways. it will be a tough drive out there, with a heavier snow expected to fall. maria? >> looks pretty. al, what are we looking for the rest of the day? >> it's going to be a quick mover. that's the good news. while it's here, we feel the impact. 51 million people under a winter advisory, or winter storm morning. this is a vigorous storm system.

we're hearing reports of thunder snow in upstate new york. albany, new york, reporting four inches of snow in the last hour. let's show you what you have happen right now. the storm system makes its way up the coast. the timing brings this in about 10:00 a.m. heavy snow, from new york city, into providence, up towards boston. we're watching this fall at a quick clip. there's a blizzard threat for cape cod and long island. snowfall rates one to four inches per hour. and this evening we look for it to pull away. the evening commute will be rough for boston and parts of coastal new england. here's what we look for as far as the snowfall totals. that's what we have right now. expecting to see about scranton, pennsylvania, five to nine inches, inland. philadelphia, three to six. new york city, 8 to 12. montauk, upwards of a foot and a half of snow. as we get into new england, we're going to look at the snowfall totals again. boston, providence, 12 to 16

inches of snow. hartford, as well. this is going to be a quick mover. and, guys, this will be the first time, if we get six inches of snow, that new york city has gone from a record high to a snowstorm of six inches or more. never has happened before. >> in history? >> and we were here for it. >> you were here. it's maria's fault. >> history. >> all right, al. thank you very much. let's turn to politics right now and new controversies for the trump white house. this morning, the president is facing criticism from his own supreme court nominee and new conflict of interest questions. this, as we await an appeals court decision on the controversial travel ban. we have it all covered, starting with peter alexander at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. jeff sessions will be sworn in as attorney general here at the white house, becoming the nation's tom law enforcer. but it comes when trump is take shots at one of the pillars of

the united states for years. she was convicted of felony identity theft because she had false papers. the now-married mother of two, continued living in arizona, checking in with immigration agents every six months. during her meeting on wednesday, she was arrested when she arrived at the i.c.e. field office in phoenix. protesters stopping the van by standing in front of it. one man even clutching a tire. her children, looking at their mother through the window. her family says she's outraged. >> she's not a bad person. and every year, she always checked in. and this never happened. >> here's what i went to school, where i met my wife, where we have our kids, where we started a family. here is where we grew up. where my kids grew up. they're american citizens. this is my country. >> reporter: garcia derios was arrested days after the trump administration brought in the definition of illegal alien.

president trump accusie ining nordstrom of not reupping the clothing line. they say it's about business, not politics. still, the controversy is heating up. president trump's family ties under fire, after the president took aim at nordstrom wednesday. tweeting from his personal account, my daughter ivanka has been treated so unfairly @nordstrom. she is a great person. terrible. the flare-up comes a week after nordstrom said it would not order ivanka's selection this season. sean spicer, digging in. >> i think it's less than a family business than an attack on his daughter. >> reporter: nordstrom insists, that's not true. writing in a statement they informed ivanka in january and saying the decision had nothing to do with politics. we've made this decision based on performance. the president of the company sent out a memo about the

roads. many highways in the areas have been shut town. officials are warning residents and travelers to stay put and not risk getting swept away by the flood waters. want to tell you about a bizarre incident at an nba game. this was last night during the knicks/l.a. clippers game. a former knicks player, charles oakley, who retired 13 years ago, found himself in the middle of a scuffle. reports indicate he was sitting behind the team's owner, james dolan. and he began to heckle him. he was approached by security. and that's when things heated up. oakley shoved two security guards. he was pulled out of the crowd, placed in handcuffs and arrested. he was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal trespassing. oakley was released around midnight. you tonight see that every day. mr. roker is back on a busy

mountains, here's why, the heavier snow has pushed past the mountains. it's going to be lighter but accumulating. the temperature has finally dropped down at philadelphia international to 32 degrees. so that will support the accumulation. it's below freezing nicely in the lehigh valley and suburb us. also seeing accumulation there. for delaware, 33 degrees and falling. in center city, just above freezing. gusting to see a little accumulation. in west philadelphia, temperatures still falling. the snow forecast has been tweaked. looking at 2 to 3 inches across portions of delaware and jersey. farther to the south, less. for the philadelphia area, including the suburbs, burlington county, up to 6 inches and more since it's been snowing in the lehigh valley and pocono mountains. at time for the travel mess this morning. jessica boyington has an update

snow. no matter where you live, if you have a flight today or tomorrow, call ahead. at least 3,300 have already been canceled so far. after a long and bitter fight, jeff sessions is being sworn in today as the next attorney general. his nomination was confirmed by a senate vote last night. in that vote, he delivered his speech on the chamber floor, thanking his fellow lawmakers and president trump. and the president has received a rare rebuke from his own supreme court nominee. during a visit to capitol hill, neil gorsuch told an aide that the recent criticism of the judicial system is disheartening and demoralizing. on wednesday, the president hammered the judges involved in the legal case over his order on immigration. also this morning, five members of the world-gafamous flying wallendas are recovering

after they lost a person. kerry sanders is in sarasota, florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the drama unfolded under the big top when they were doing that rehearsal. nik wallenda and seven others were on the wire. they were stacked into an eight-person pyramid. going along, someone lost the balance and came crashing down. five came crashing down. there was no net. they came into the floor here. there was a little carpet. but no mats. nothing to protect them. five are in the hospital. but nik wallenda says doctors tell him, remarkably, after some recovery, everybody will be back to normal. this morning, despite a horrific high-wire accident, nik wallenda says the show will definitely go on. >> it's tragic. it's horrible. it's a nightmare. but the wallendas, we'll get

through it. >> reporter: eight performers, six men and two women, were reversing a pyramid act similar to this, shot by nbc news two weeks ago, hoping to break a guinness world record. alt the top, nik's aunt, seated four stories above the ground, when according to nik, someone lost their balance. >> i was on the wire at the same time. three of us were able to catch the wire. we had a guy today fall 28 feet. he was on the lower level. he got up and walked out of the tent. >> we're triaging. we have three confirmed trauma. >> reporter: five were taken to the hospital after the plunge. but nik says all are expected to recover. >> extremely lucky given the height of the fall they survived. >> there were angels surrounding us. >> reporter: what are you thinking as you watch other people fall. >> what could i do? there was a guy on top of me, i did everything to catch. i couldn't do it. >> reporter: the wallendas have dazzled tens of millions over

the years. nik walking the wire over niagara falls. and a spectacular feat, walking the grand canyon. but in 1962, nik's uncles lost their lives, when a similar pyramid was disastrous. and his father was killed after he plunged off of a wire. >> we know what the family felt when this happened. >> reporter: but nik says he knows where he will be tonight. will you get back up there? >> i will. there's no question in my mind. it's what our family has been based on for 200 years and 7 generations. this is our legacy. >> reporter: nik says every performer there that fell yesterday had an angel with them on the way down. i've known nik for a long time. he's a friend of ours on the show. he has never shied away from talking about the dangers of what he does. and yet, even though he says this has shaken him, he plans to get back up there for a rehearsal later today. and he'll be back under this big top for a show here on friday.

system, and you get thunderstorm and thundersnow potential in that area. a snowstorm, you have weak updrafts and low-level clouds. however, when you have a storm like this, you have stronger updrafts and rising clouds. within that, you'll see electrical charges developing within that updraft. and so, that causes the thunderstorms. and really drives the snow rates up to four inches per hour, which we've seen in albany already. and look at the snowfall totals through tonight. boston, you're within 9 to 12 inches. even 16 inches of snow. same on the eastern end of massachusetts. long island. we have a wide swath of 8 to 16 inches of snow. and out west, more rain coming in. more heavy snow. and in fact, we've got snow melt and heavy rain. so, we have the potential of flooding at the foothills of the cascades. flood watches over the good morning, i'm meteorologist bill henley.

the night before the storm, or in many places, the snow has not started. come out to your car and rub an onion along the window like this. or a potato, the same thing. what's happening is the sugar from the onion and the potato is creating a little barrier here. a little film on the window. and the sugar melts rather than the freezing. there won't be ice or frost on there. here's something else you can do. you take a sock -- you know what it is when your windshield is streaky. take a sock the night before and put it on to your windshield wiper like this. i promise i will get it. did it ten times in rehearsal. you stick the sock all the way on. all the way on like that. oh, my lord. like that. keep it up like this. and ice will not form there. and it will be -- protect you like that. now, one other thing you want to

let's start with the headlines of the day. here's your news at 8:00. >> reporter: we start with that wild winter storm that's walloping the northeastern part of this country. i'm craig melvin in central park this morning. where folks could see somewhere between 8 and 12 inches of snow. schools have been shut down in new york city. schools have also been shut down in boston. many school districts in and around the northeast are on a delay, as well. meanwhile, the morning commute, quite treacherous. you see the snow here continuing to fall. that's been the case for some hours. 2,300 snowplows are out on the roads. 315 tons of salt have also been deployed, as well. but here, perhaps, is the biggest part of this story. take a look at this flight aware misery map. you can see the areas in red,

court nominee is sounding off about criticism of judges involved in the travel ban case. nbc news has confirmed that neil gorsuch used the words disheartening and demoralizing when reacting to the president's comments. in houston, what began as a dramatic police chase ended in a fiery crash. surveillance video shows a vehicle leaving the road and slamming into a gas pump at a service station on wednesday. the vehicle erupted into flames. the driver tried to run away but was captured. firefighters were able to safely put out the fire. police say the driver was wanted for questioning in an ongoing investigation. but refused to pull over. coming up next on "pop start," tom hitle ston is going to explain why he wore that shirt when he dated taylor swift. and desire, intimacy and their benefits on your brain. maria checked it out and an ordinary jar of vaseline® jelly.

good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley in the "first alert" weather center. you can see that the wind is blowing and the prompting of colder air overnight until we saw the snow this morning and it will continue to rain. from the kim mel center, just some cold spots and the ground is warm. many of the city and the neighborhoods around the city will see accumulation h. is a view from the the stadium in wilmington. and looking at at the snow that will end this morning and accumulating snow across delaware and south jersey into

the suburbs and south philadelphia as well. it is starting to taper off to the west, and in berks county, a and the tail of thele system is quickly moving into that area, but the snow has extended into new jersey with the cold wind blowing to bring in the cold wind from vineland to cape may where you are still getting rain right now. you can see the snow in dover and milford, and the accumulation will be limited many those areas with the higher temperatures. but once it cools down, it will stay cold. the winds in the day today, and the steady winds will gust to 29 miles per hour, and we could see the gusts as high as 40 miles per hour to keep the colder a air right in place. 29 in the suburbs and lehigh valley and philadelphia and 32 at philadelphia internabl. and down to 32 in scenter city. and now that the temperature is coming down, you will see a little bit more accumulation in the city. our forecast showing that by 9:00, the snow goes from reading

and al allentown, but it is still going to be falling in delaware and jersey city and especially central new jersey and more hours of snow ahead in central new jersey, but by 10:00, it is coming to an end by wilmington and philadelphia, and by noontime, you can see trenton is seeing a little bit of snow, and by lunchtime, it is going to be out of here. we will see the snow on the ground, but it does not look like the worst of it is going to be make it to philadelphia and wilmington and just to the south, 1 to 3 inches possible, and less to the south where the temperatures are warmer. 4 to 8 inches, and already four inches in the ground already west of the lehigh valley. and getting around has not been easy. jessica boyington is trying to help. she has an alert from the "first alert" traffic center. >> no surprise that it is not the easiest of the commute, but not a lot of people heading out of the door. this is lang highway and you can see the slippery conditions

there. the same for 295 near hamilton in new jersey and 656 and looking at this, the visibility has are reduced dramatically there. is an accident right in here,ñi that is on the northbound side, and moving wa towards the trenton area. there is a crash in lower providence on skippack road, and checking in with the mass transit, septa buses, watch for delays, and some buses are running on the delay. we go the katy. >> it started to snow here and that is when thing were accumulating on the surfaces, and the grassy surfaces. on the pavement not as much as the grassy surface, and this is obviously because the grassy surface cools faster. we are just under 4 inches right in this area of westchester, so

good portions of the county, but some portions of snow there in parts of philadelphia and now stretching into new jersey, but it is going become very light and stop in parts of delaware soon. the cutoff line is nearing us. let's look at a closer look of the areas here with the deeper blues stretching through philadelphia, those are the areas with a steady snow stretching into new jersey and into tabernacle and fwlos ter county, but within the next couple of hour, even these areas will see the snow moving out. hour by hour, 8:30 in the morning, the snow there in our area, but by 10:00 a.m., moving out of philadelphia and completely moving out by the afternoon when the first alert will lift. and the key is that we have dropped below freezing right to the shore. the numbers won't pick up in the afternoon, because we are going to stay cold, and as we go throughout the day, we will be colder feeling. the feels-like temperatures,

teens by afternoon and tonight, some feeling like single digis.s right now, the roadways are a concern and let's go to "first alert" traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> right now, we are seeing the reduced visibility, and the slippery spots and the snow falling, and you can't even see the roads here with our cameras at jerard avenue. so it is a slow go and even though it is not the normal volume. in west conshohocken a crash there, and around route 656 and 295, very good in the volume there, but the roads are covered in snow, and the same in new jersey in 130 southbound at pennsauken there is slow moving. and we go to mattt for an update. where are you, matt? >> well sh, jessica, right now,

are on state road here in tellford, bucks county, and this is what we are seeing, snow covered roads in move the area here. we went to reading and montgomery county and makeing or way into bucks county. and now, you will see here that we have a speed limit of 45 and i trying to take it extra tra slower here. i know it looks like we are going fast, but it is just from the camera angle. some of the areas are white. they have not been treated or plowed, but you have areas like this where the plows have obviously been through or at least cars have been through to try to mess it up a little bit, and you will get a slush as opposed to a sheet of snow that people drive through, and you go down some of the side streets, and you can see a little bit more difficult to navigate. i will look at my photographer john, and turn down one of the side street, and let me give you the idea of what the folks are

steadier snow is in new jersey like mercer and burlington county and the more heavier snow will be moving through as it is moving off shore. time it out. hour by hour forecast. starting at 9:30, moving out of philly and into afternoon, completely out of our area. now, talking about the roadways with jessica boyington. >> thank you. starting off on i-95 and not the normal volume, but in woodhaven road, there is a car veered off into medium which is a common sight this morning. you see that the snow is accumulating into the shoulders and the grassy areas as well. so you want to watch getting on and off of the ramps and the slippery spots. this is hamilton township in new jersey, and a crash around route 129 and two lanes closed moving through there. and also, watching route 42 on route 41, and you can see both directions are look just fine in terms of the traffic, but we are seeing the snow accumulate there as well. live team coverage of the winter
