gusty and damaging winds today, a look at the problems popping up in the area this morning. evacuation order in effect. nearly 2,000 people living near the tallest dam are told to get out now. a story about love and second chances. the rescue that brought the dog in new jersey and how she's an inspiration to so many. this tree came down on new second street in montgomery county. >> see how gusty the winds are in center city, philadelphia. there's a first alert for today. more downed trees and branchs and power outages are possible.

the winds are keeping the flags and banners blowering in center city. the gusts are strong enough you can see the signs rippling from the force of the wind. >> winds fierce at the jersey shore. from cape may, winds gusting 50 miles per hour. flights delayed and cancelled at philadelphia international airport. part of the problem is the wind as you see how shaky the camera is. a snowstorm in the northeast today. the airport is warning travelers to check with their carriers. >> we have live team coverage of the wind in the region, and we've been checking out damage throughout the area. we begin with our first meteorologist, the winds with us throughout the day, right? >> exactly right. gusts up to 50 miles per hour or above, and if you look at the map, we got that right now. wilmingto wilmington, 53 miles per hour gusts, strong enough to cause damage if not already seen in your area. branchs that are loose will be

knocked off and knocked into roadways. drive with caution. gusts are strong further north. allen town, 2 the 9 miles per hour, in philadelphia, 41 miles per hour gusts, strong as well. the same at the shore, 49 miles per hour. and 39 in millville. across the board, these are windy days that we have been experiencing and will continue through your afternoon. as a result, it's colder than it truly is outside. take a look at the pocono feeling like 11 degrees. 27 in philadelphia, 28 in millville. dover feeling like 28 degrees out because of the winds and cool air in place. throughout the day, a chilly day mostly due to how strong winds are. radar and satellite show us overall, though, we are dry. today's not supposed to be a rainy day by any means, but a windy day. as we track the next several days including valentine's day and workweek, things stay looking dry. we'll track fast throughout the workweek and talk more about

when the winds let go of the region coming up in a few minutes. see you then. live team coverage continues now live in philadelphia. kate, any damage there? >> reporter: there is damage that was actually just cleared. i'll get to that in a second, but to the relief of hundreds, if not thousands of drivers, this very busy road reopened. it was just in the last few seconds, reopened. the trees, large trees around us, sways quickly and loosely in the wind showing you how strong the wind is here and how strong it's been for hours. the road reopened. i'll be careful, but 200 yards beyond me earlier this morning, the wind toppled a tree, brought down wire, and fell on a box truck, just one of the countless problems caused by this weather. it started overnight, howling

winds ransacked a center city construction site. the fence around love park was toppled and twisted, a sign of just how strong the wind was. over at the airport, officials sent out a warning to travelers saying check your flight status. most arriving flights to philadelphialy international from the northeast were cancelled. departing were in jeopardy too with the high winds here. in lynnwood, a fallen tree took power lines with it. a similar scene not far away on route 23 in lower marion. if you didn't have downed trees and wires in the neighborhood, chances are you saw a lot of this. trash bags strewn about. after strong winds blew over the cans. here in philadelphia, the licenses and inspections

shooting, they left, and then the victim was shot. he's in critical condition. police are not sure if he was the intended target. college basketball player from philadelphia wounded in a drive-by shooting is recovering. john davis plays for thomas university near baltimore leading the team over a win saturday night. it was a homecoming of sorts for davis. he played high school ball here, and rather than going home with the team, he stayed in town for his baby's dedication. that's when a gunman opened fire. a bullet grazed his knee, a 16-year-old was also shot. >> grew up with, went out to eat, and they were hanging out, just got back, and, unfortunately, at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> police are investigating. happening now, family, friends, and neighbors remember this community activist who was shot and killed in her home. head of the university city green nonprofit, the funeral underway now in west

philadelphia. she was found shot to death inside her home this month. there is a $20,000 reward for information leading to arrest in the deadly shooting. someone left messages of hate in south jersey, and just before valentine's day. people living here found fliers recruiting people for the kkk. the fliers had messages surrounded by hearts that read, love your own race, and stop homosexual and race mixing. neighbors we spoke to are upset. >> no room for that kind of hate here. >> i'm surprised. i don't know -- it was a shock to me. the fliers have an out of town number on them, and when we calmed the number, it went to a recorded message. police and town leaders are investigating. pennsylvania state senate offices are closed today because of vandalism. someone broke into the building over the weekend and sprayed the inside of the state capitol with a fire extinguisher. crews are cleaning the mess.

he flew to washington this morning. the two leaders will meet at the white house on wednesday. benjamin netanyahu told reporters that israel's relations with the u.s. were about to, quote, get even stronger. the future of the top trump aide is now up in the air. national security adviser, flynn, no longer denying he talked about u.s. sanctions with the russian ambassador before the president's inauguration. the president did not comment on flynn's fate, but a top white house official refused to publicly defend flynn. we could see a rewritten version of president trump's travel ban. on friday, the president said he expected to announce a new version of the ban early this week. president trump is promising more security. on "meet the press," a senior policy adviser said they are not ruling out further court action either. tonight, the senate is expected to confirm mnuchen as treasury secretary. they say he failed to protect

homeowners facing foreclosure in the financial crisis. he says he worked to help homeowners refinance. nearly 200,000 people are out of their homes in northern california because of a dangerous dam crews are trying to fix a hole which was caused by erosion. nbc 10 national reporter, steve patterson, has more from oroville. >> reporter: officials are trying to avoid catastrophe. 30 foot wall of solid water could come if the spillway collapses. the emergency evacuation order given out quickly sunday night and nearly 200,000 people told to evacuate their homes, many of them we've been told threw belongings in plastic bags, into the cars, and headed into a scary situation of people trying to escape and get out of here. that was basically caused by so much rainfall that we've gotten this month, so much talk about the drought in california over

years, and now it seems like, especially in northern california, there's been so much water it's overloading dam systems. this one was simply overloaded because the spill ways were damaged by the water, erosion on primary and secondary spillways leading to officials worrying about spillways giving way to a massive tidal wave which would devastate communities, particularly low lying in this area. now the work is done, and engineers are checking out the spillway to shore this up before the next rainfall is predicted to come this week. back to you. meanwhile, heavy wet snow is blanketing the northeast days after the biggest storm of the season dumped up to 19 inches of snow. winter storm warnings in effect across new england. we're up to two feet of snow is possible. these pictures from massachusetts where the 1993 and high winds are pounding that area. the area's having wind issues

with strong gusts expected this afternoon. that's the thing, we had rain yesterday, not cold enough for snow for our region, but here's a look live outside in philadelphia, looking out at center city. you see the buildings look like they are jumping up and down. they are not. that's the camera wobblie ining around because it's windy. it's rare to see this camera wobbling around. that's how high the gus are. 41 in philadelphia, mount holly, 41 miles per hour, and stronger in trenton at 39, and coatesville at 34. wilmington at 53 miles per hour gusts, strong enough to cause damage to tree branchs or power branchs into power lines, leading to outages, which is why we have a first alert in effect. here's the futurecast. around 40s are possible right now through your early to

mid-afternoon. you see 3:00, seeing some spots near 50 miles per hour. these are strong winds due to the system passing throughout the area. these winds die down, but not until this evening. 8:00 p.m., 25-30 miles per hour gusts. breezy scale as we go overnight into your tuesday morning. those winds let up for the most part, 10-15 miles per hour by 7:00 a.m. breezy throughout the night and morning, but the early part of the evening will still be windy. do expect the drive home a little tug on the wheel. radar and satellite, not tracking rain or snow, there's spots of green here, but that's not rain reaching the ground, but return on radar. we got scattered clouds mixing in with sun, and, actually, that's going to be a focus of this extended forecast. take a peek at the bottom of the screen now with the seven day throughout our neighborhoods. we see more sun in the ten day than we have in awhile. temperatures currently in the

upper 30s and close to 40s in the philadelphia neighborhoods. it does not feel that way. 40 in society hill. parkwood at 40 currently. we got these 30s and 40s, feels like 20s because of the winds. take a look. the feels like temperatures throughout the day. 28 at noon. only up to 29 at 4:00 p.m. in between, we feel like the low 30s at best. it's cold the rest the day because of the winds and down to 27 at 7:00 p.m. the suburbs cooler. only mid to upper 20s. the best it feels like with the mix of clouds and sun, but notice, no rain, no snow for today, even though we feel like mid-20s throughout the afternoon. delaware feeling warmer because temperatures are slightly warmer. 31 degrees at 4:00 p.m., same at jersey shore, and 40 at new jersey at noon. winds hold strong into the afternoon. let's look at the ten-day.

politics, american women continue to be vastly under represented. this week in philadelphia, the pennsylvania center for women in politics is hosting an event to help women get ready to run, and dana brown is an assistant professor of political science in pittsburgh, and the executive director of women in politics. thanks for being here. >> tharnks for having me. >> you had an event in pittsburgh? >> direct. we had 166 women show up for pittsburgh training, and on saturday, february 18th, campaign training for women here in philadelphia. >> and, so, what's the training about? what's the day about? >> well, it's a one-day bipartisan one-stop shop to learn politics and campaigning for those who have never done it before. >> did you see more interest in women saying i think i might be able to run when hillary clinton ran for president? >> you know, the thing is, i thought there would be a chilling effect after seeing how hillary clinton was portrayed in

it is not tied down, watch out. we were out this morning where you can see the wind was blowing people's trash around. if today happens to be your pickup day, don't say we didn't warn you. >> yeah. we have live team coverage in the region, and katy zach ri is checking out the damage, but we begin with our meteorologist. the winds with us throughout the day, right? >> that's right. we are looking at windy conditions. we called for the winds since last week, we warned, hey, it's a windy monday, and gusts have really picked up. take a look at the current conditions, 39 in philadelphia, and it's still feeli ining like upper 20s because the winds are strong. lower sustained winds, not the gusts, heaviest for strongest winds you experience outside, but the sustained winds are very strong, 29 miles per hour northwest, and the suburbs, 36 the temperature, currently feeling 39 in new jersey and 37 in lehigh valley.

also at 39 in delaware, aek and look at the sustained winds. northwest at 37 miles per hour. gusts are about 50 miles per hour right now in northern delaware. we are looking at very, very strong gusts. as we pointed out already, we are seeing damage, caused mostly with trees and loose debris outside. radar, satellite showing we don't have rain or snow to track with the wind. sometimes a strong northwest wind pulls in lake effect snow. not much as we get to the poconos and lehigh valley for the areas, but it's dry and windy afternoon forecast. here's what we're looking 39 to 40 right now and staying around the low 40s in your amp with gusts just not letting up. we have sustained winds at 2 pennsylvania miles per hour. gusts still up to above 40 miles per hour. this afternoon, we want to track out the winds hour by hour. we'll talk a little more about the rest of the workweek, if you have plans for valentine's day, all that in a bet. thank you.

the wind made back to work monday even tougher. >> we are live in andora where a problem recentlily cleared. you're holding on to your hat. >> reporter: advise i gave earlier, hold on to your hats. there's not cavalier advice. we're really holding our hats. to give you an idea at the strong winds, look at the large, very old big trees that are moving so freely in the wind. it's a little too free for comfort as we are under them. good news we referenced earlier, look, bells mill road, a very, very busy and active road in philadelphia just reopened after crews spent hours clearing one of the large trees that brought down not just branchs with it. >> everything down there, i don't know what's taking so long. >> reporter: frustrated drivers dealt with severe wind damage this morning.

bells mill road was detoured for hours, strong winds took down the trees, damaging power lines in the process, and it fell on a box truck that was drivie ining through. the driver was not injured. it took crews and tree cutters hours to clear the mess. we found one driver who chose to wait out the cleanup rather than detour around it. >> i went to detour, but the traffic's so backed up that i decided to wait for the tree to be cleaned up, sitting here for 45 minutes because the tree is a giant tree, and it smashed the truck. >> reporter: another look at how strong the winds are out here in this section of philadelphia. this old and large tree just swaying easily in the strong winds. one thing, philadelphia, city licenses and inspections department issued a statement asking homeowners across the city and those in charge of construction sites to secure anything lose so it's not blown away causing more damage.

that the new administration has taken on north korea. back to you. >> drew simmons in south korea. in asia, 17 people dead after a tour bus flipped on a highway near taiwan capital. more victims trapped on the bus. this is video in from the scene in the deadly crash. not yet known where tourists were fro. rescue operations continue after an avalanche at a french ski resort, four died and five missing. high level of snow is making it hard for the rescuers to get to the missing people. happening now, army sergeant bergdahl is in a north carolina r courtroom. lawyers are trying to convince the judge he can't get a fair trial because of statements from president trump. he's accused of deserting his post in afghanistan and putting soldiers in danger. trump called bergdahl a traitor. dylan roof asked for a new
