hostage. the officers union says prisoners have a hit list. >> good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. >> i'm jacqueline london. so far more than a dozen employees have left their jobs at the vaughn correctional center in smyrna. >> tim furlong joins us with more on that list targeting those officers. >> reporter: the head of the corrections officers union tells me that there's sort of this floating list of officers that inmates in smyrna might want to target. that's the kind of conditions the officers are working under. some officers are simply getting out. just about two weeks after inmates at the vaughn correctional facility overtook guards and killed one of them in a 20-hour standoff, at least 17 officers have quit or put in for retirement. at a starting salary of $32,000 a year, it will be harder to track their replacements. >> for the pay and the risk and the fact that lieutenant steven

floyd had to be murdered for us to get here to try to make some changes, i can understand people feeling that way. >> reporter: today governor jaurn carnie appointed two retired judges to investigate what happened at vaughn and see how to prevent it from happening again, he wants to keep officers as safe as possible moving forward. reverend christopher bullock and other local church leaders say while they're okay with the judges who will review the standoff, they want to make sure it leads to action for inmates and officers. they want a federal reserve and a more holistic revow of the prison system. >> we want them to come in and say you must carry out our policies to clean this thing up. >> reporter: any review needs to lead to action. there's been studies in the past but the important changes haven't been made. until they are, a career in the prison is going to be a real tough sell in delaware. >> what mother out there is going to tell their 25-year-old kid to come do this job right now with the conditions and the salary? >> no charges yet in the standoff and murder.

the union president said he'll talk with the governor about immediate changes that could be made long before the judges make their preliminary findings. while everyone is out there studying and reviewing and investigating, the officers work together 24/7. we're live in wilmington, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. now to a developing story in wilmington. police are looking for the man who kidnapped a woman from an apartment complex and assaulted her and robbed her. that suspect had a gun when he shoved her into the car at the top of the hill apartments. brandon, what are you learning about this? >> reporter: this crime started and ended at this apartment complex across the street here on pry or road. the victim got to the complex and moments after she stepped out of her car a man shoved her into a different car. we came to the apartment complex where we broke the news to

several neighbors. after the suspect drove away with the woman, he took her to an atm on marsh road to remove the money. he punched the victim before bringing her back to the apartment complex. i spoke to the assistant manager. she said they're waiting for more information because they haven't heard from the victim just yet. a neighbor described what it's like to live here. >> beautiful, quiet, friendly. we all know each other. i even have my son and he's always like running around. i never worry about him. i guess i have to change these things a little bit. >> you heard a neighbor describe how quiet it is out here. she says they do need more lights. it will get tougher for people to see as they walk outside. i checked to see if there were other violent crimes reported in this area. according to the new castle police crime website, the only other violent crime reported was an armed robbery about 2 1/2 weeks ago about a half mile from this location.

reporting live in wilmington, i'm brandon huffton, nbc 10 news. we're following breaking news in the trump administration this evening. tonight nbc news has learned that vice president mike pence was left in the dark for more than a week over a white house controversy involving the president's national security adviser. lauren mayk joining us live in the prabreaking news center. >> reporter: this is brand-new information we're learning just since i saw you last hour. nbc news has learned that vice president mike pence did not know about the justice warning about mike flynn until last week. others knew 11 days earlier. flynn stepped down amid reports he misled white house officials including the president about his contact with russia. he initially told them that he did not discuss sanctions with russia's ambassador to the u.s., but he later conceded the issue may have come up. a spokesman today explained what led to flynn's resignation. >> we got to a point not based

on a legal issue but based on a trust issue, the level of trust between the president and general flynn had eroded to the point where he felt he had to make a change. >> it was in mid-january that mike pence went on television defending flynn and saying no sanctions were discussed. january 26th the justice department warned the white house that flynn might not have been truthful about his conversation with the russians. and mike pence learned about it then on february 9th. live in the breaking news center, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. according to several reports, a russian spy ship has been spotted off delaware. the ship made a port call in cuba and has been making its way up the east coast. the ship is patrolling about 70 miles off delaware. that's still in international waters, but it's believed to be the first such patrol since president trump took office. chris christie met with president trump in washington today amid renewed talk he could be slated for a spot in the new

administration. christie had been a surrogate for donald trump throughout his campaign. ultimately he was never hired for a cabinet position. however, recent reports have emerged regarding future shake-ups in the white house staff. the delaware county native who has been serving as the director of the secret service is retiring for the second time. he came out of retirement two years ago to take over the secret service. he's a villanova grad and taught at father judge high school before becoming comcast director of corporate security. his departure means that trump will be able to name a new secret service director. to your first alert weather now. dry night out there for your valentine's day nighttime plans. you're looking live at broad street in center city from our kimmel center campus camera. krystal klei is tracking the conditions in her forecast. >> it is a pretty good forecast if you're getting out this evening. temperatures are now starting to

slip. we're at 42 in philadelphia and 40s in the suburbs. sun is setting and we're starting to see the darker conditions. about time for dinner. 42 in the lehigh valley. 40 in delaware. but this overall is a very nice forecast because it's dry and winds are light. here are your current winds. 9 miles per hour in philly and wilmington only at 7, there are the low temperatures falling into the 30s. 9 through 11:00 p.m. a few spotty clouds through the suburbs. 35 degrees. 7:00 p.m. in the lehigh valley. most of us will stay in the mid to upper 30s throughout the rest of the evening. we'll talk about the winds strengthening through thursday coming up. former penn professor and convicted wife killer raphael robb was back in court a month after his release from prison. he faced questions about whether he lied about his finances during a court case brought by his late wife's relatives.

that suit ended with a $128 million judgment against the former professor. if it's found he lied, he could back to prison for perjury. he served ten years for the beating death of his wife in 2006. a conviction tonight for a burlington county man at the center of one of the most infamous missing child cases in u.s. history. today a jury found pedro hernandez guilty in disappearance and murder of 6-year-old etan patz. patz disappeared in 1979 on his way to a school bus stop in new york. hernandez once worked at a convenience store in the neighborhood. he now faces life in prison. university police at rutgers are investigating after an anti-islamic poster was found on campus. police say the poster has the phrase "imagine a muslim-free america" over a background of the twin towers and an american flag. it had information that linked to a white see prum esy group.

the central bucks board of school directors will vote on textbooks. three directors on the board don't want those books in the classrooms because they believe the information is slanted. denise nakano is headed to that meeting. you can hear what the board decides at 11:00. the school in wynnewood has suspended two teachers over fallout from a palestinian speakers invitation to a club. the teachers were suspended after parents complained about a planned lecture by a swarthmore college professor, the professor is tied to a movement which advocates punitive measures against israel. pennsylvania governor tom wolf was joined by students in harrisburg today to talk about his budget proposal and also increased funding for early childhood education. the budget provides an additional $75 million for pre-k. the money in wolf's budget would allow 8400 additional children to enroll.

charges have been dropped for a lehigh valley woman caught on surveillance video right here stealing a baby jesus out of a nativity scene in bethlehem last year. instead jacqueline ross will have to pay a $100 fine and court costs. prosecutors decided ross' mental health issues. ross called the entire incident a bad joke. >> oh. >> did you see this, "saturday night live" mocking the white house press secretary two weeks in a row with those podium antics? up next we find how a local company made both podium skits possible. plus wedding bells ringing on this valentine's day. how montgomery county judges are making the occasion extra special for couples marrying in their courtroom today. take a look at this very quiet radar and satellite map. conditions fine but tomorrow the winds start to break up.

renovation. let's take a look at the blue cross river ring. a lot of skaters out there. pleasant night for all those on the ice. >> really nice conditions because it's not terribly cold out there. it's just sitting in the low 40s, upper 30s across the board. that's what you see in our new jersey neighborhoods as well. 39 for washington township right now. 38 degrees in clayton. audubon 42 degrees and mt. laurel at 41. a little cooler for areas like princeton, 34 rand hopewell township 39 degrees. these will continue to slip just a bit overnight. we're talking about most of the lows not falling below the mid-30s. pretty good conditions for our valentine's day evening forecast. radar and satellite shows us this is a clear evening. we'll start to see a few clouds building overnight, but no rain in the forecast. you can leave that umbrella at home. here's a look at the hour by hour forecast.

as we move forward, you'll see that there's rain down to the southwest of us. what's going to happen is that is going to move to the northeast, but it's going to just clip us to the south. so we're not expecting for rain over our viewing area aside from cape may. for our wednesday, you can tell just a mix of clouds and sun out there. 52 in fairmount. tacony at 59. mid-40s for the lehigh valley and berks county could see an isolated flurry near the poconos tomorrow. that's about it. elsewhere a little more coverage. that's where we may see spot chances of showers moving by on the outer edge of that system that's going to clip us to the south. that will be for first half of your day. temperatures, voorhees at 51, egg harbor township the same.

future wind gusts. they start low for us tomorrow morning, but as we get into the afternoon they do pick up. here's 3:00 p.m. right around 25-mile-per-hour gusts. this is not nearly as windy as it was yesterday and your monday waking up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. but thursday gets closer. 7:00 a.m. already 30 to 35 mile-per-hour gusts. that means it will feel colder than it truly is. this is a forecast and highs will be in the low 40s. by 5:00 p.m. gusts near 40 miles per hour for philadelphia and much of the pennsylvania suburbs even down south to the shore. you see avalon with gusts of 43 miles per hour. here's a look at the ten-day on 10. tomorrow we warm up, breezy, 52 degrees, then we cool down. 42 degrees the temperature for your thursday. that's when we have the higher guests as well. very average day with sunny conditions. then look at that weekend. we get to 58 saturday, 64 on your sunday.
