an overturned tractor trailer. it happened on the blue route near chemical road. you can see one lane getting by in the northbound lanes which led on a hefty backup. no word on what caused the crash and if anyone was injured. >> my insinkts are like no way, i have to help. >> reporter: heroes step in. >> he was doing what he was doing to her. >> reporter: good samaritans save a woman under attack. >> we were holding the hand with a snief. >> reporter: the struggle that unfolded on the street and the witnesses at the right place at the right time. >> this is a story we first brought you as breaking news on nbc 10 news at 5:00. >> a woman stabbed while driving in allentown. police say a stepfather attacked a stepdaughter and his wife and several people rushed in to help. one of the heroes is telling us how it happened. here is the story from nbc 10's drew smith. >> that stepfather will spend the night here at the lehigh county jail while his wife and stepdaughter are in the hospital. witnesses say it could have been even worse if not for the good

people who stepped in. sky force ten over hamilton street in allentown shows the carloading on to a tow truck. inside it, a bloody scene. you can see a purse still in the front seat. >> i'm totally amazed. i can't believe it. >> reporter: police say a woman was driving when her stepfather lashed out with a knife. >> my instincts were like, there's no way, i have to help. >> reporter: he is a paramedic to drove up in his ambulance just as this was happening. he along with four others jumped into action. >> i got his fingers, ripped them out, kicked the knife out. >> reporter: he says the man was strong and intent on continuing to hurt the women. >> we were holding the hand with the knife, and then we got her out and then it was almost like he tried to get out after her, but we took him down. >> they actually saved the day. so let's hope and give some wishes for the young lady. >> i'm glad we were there. i'm glad i saw it, and i was just ready to help. that's all, save her life. >> reporter: we're told the wife is in serious condition while the stepdaughter arrived at the er critically hurt.

in allentown i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, from bucks county cleanup efforts are under way at a local school after a fire damaged several classrooms. sky force ten was over penn rich high school. school officials say an electrical malfunction may have touched off the fire. the school's sprinkler system limited damage to mostly water and smoke in three classrooms. >> new at 11:00, a white house reversal to tell you about. tonight the trump administration lifted federal guidelines that said transgender students should be able to use bathrooms that match their chosen gender identity. the obama administration issued that guidance back in may. it was not legally binding. but the trump white house says the issue should be a local decision. it will now be up to states and school districts to decide whether federal sex discrimination law applies to gender identity. there will be no change, by the way, in philadelphia public schools because the superintendent says transgender students can continue to use bathrooms based on their gender

identity. money was on the mind of the president this afternoon durng a meeting with the treasury secretary and others today. mr. trump stressed making the federal government leaner and more accountable for spending. he said he expects to submit a federal budget and healthcare plan to congress next month. >> the healthcare to get moving along very well sometime during the month of march, maybe mid to early march. we'll be submitting something i think people will be very impressed by. >> the president also pledged no more money will be wasted. new at 11:00, hundreds of angry constituents making their voices heard at a central new jersey town hall meeting. >> i believe -- >> that was the scene inside rep congressman leonard lance's event. hundreds in the crowd held up signs, they chanted throughout the town hall. lance was peppered with questions ranging from his stance on abortion to the environment to the dakota access

pipeline. meanwhile in delaware county tonight, dozens of people worried about losing healthcare coverage packed an affordable care act forum in media. one teenager told the audience she doesn't know what she will do when and if she has to get off her parents coverage. new at 11:00, the fallout continues at the delaware prison where a correctional officer was killed earlier this month. today we learned more than two dozen medical workers at the vaughn correctional center in smyrna resigned since february 1. lieutenant floyd was killed during a standoff with prisoners earlier this month. wre in delaware spoke to the an officer at the prison who say workers there are in fear for their lives. >> it is -- i mean it is very -- sorry for your loss. other inmates, still in the building, oh, they ain't done yet, we ain't done. this time we're going to get a white boy this time. >> the announcement comes one

day after the prison's ward enwas placed on paid leave. eight correctional officers have also handed in their resignation since the deadly standoff. meanwhile, a delaware state senator is proposing pay increases for department of corrections personnel. senator dave lawson introduced a plan to up the starting salary by $4,000. the increases would cost the state nearly $15 million if approved. to a developing story, now a confrontation leads to the arrest of ten protesters trying to stop construction of the dakota access pipeline. they set fires throughout the day, and one explosion even injured two children. today was the government deadline for everyone to leave a protest camp on the federal land in north dakota. they had been there almost a year. most people left peacefully earlier today. new at 11:00, new jersey is considering expand inthe scope of medical marijuana usage in the state. chronic pain could soon be added to the list of ailments that qualify for medical marijuana treatment. the chair of a state panel looking into the issue says

there is sufficient evidence to expand the treatment list. the state's medical marijuana program has been in effect since becoming law back in 2010. also new at 11:00, we are learning how costly it was to put the state's former attorney general on trial. attorney general josh shapiro says his team estimates legal bills in the kathleen king case are north of $3.5 million, 1.8 million went to review the a.g.'s office use of computers to swap porn grachk images and more. kaine was sentenced to 10 to 20 months in prison for leaking grand jury information and then lying about it. a not guilty verdict for a west philadelphia teenager accused of killing his classmate. a jury acquitted xavier beeman after agreeing he acted in self defense when he stabbed o'neill two years ago. the two got in a fight. o'neill later chased down beamon and started to beat him up. beamon grabbed a knife and stabbed o'neill.

♪ nbc 10 at city hall tonight for the picasso project awards ceremony. art students from the 15 schools that received grants showed off their talents. >> and creative juices were flowing in south jersey. four local companies competed in a con-struction food drive. they create it structures made from cans. can-struction helps local organizations. lots of flavor and beer flow. big brothers big sisters hosted it at the local brewing company. money raised at the event will go to local chapters to help children. you might be enjoying the unseasonably warm weather but it comes with a consequence you

might not have expected. >> take a look. >> talking about rats. their numbers are spiking and you can thank warm temperatures for that. brandon hudson explains why. >> reporter: pest control workers told us if you live or work in new construction you probably are seeing a lot more of these inside your house. those same workers told us this unseasonably warm winter is leading to more calls for rats and myself. >> rats in that picture, probably about 30. >> the staff at evans pest control in kensington showed us some of the rode ents they've caught over the years. owner says it has got increasingly busy the past couple of years, especially during mild winters. >> i would say we're doing 30 to 40 initial services a week for rodent control. >> evans say it is a significant increase over years past. we learned the unseasonably warm winter leads to more rodents mating, creating a larger population, especially around new construction areas. >> center city, that's where most of our calls come from.

>> i'm not really surprised to find there's myself everywhere. >> reporter: cheyenne oxendine lives in fishtown. she told us she sees myself at school. >> they will run through the auditorium and the theater area, the cafeteria where we eat. usually it is like really small ones. >> you have days like today and all of our calls have been rodent calls. >> reporter: rich foreman owns dynamite pest control. he says he is getting ten calls a day for help, more than double for this time of year. if this weather persists business doesn't appear to be slowing down. >> the way the rodent population is in this area, it's been busy going into the summertime. >> reporter: brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. safe to look back at the screen now, jackie. now that we're like itching ourselves. >> if the rats are enjoying t s weather they have a lot to look forward to this week. >> a mild night for this couple's walk with the baby. >> immediately we found a woman walking her dogs.

there she is. and she is not going to need that coat tomorrow, right, glen? >> that's right. especially during the afternoon once the sun comes out. we're going to start to see those temperatures really climb. we have a lot of clouds around right now. start the day off tomorrow with some fog, but the temperature is going to climb. it is in the 40s across the entire area now except for 50 degrees in trenton, 39 in the poconos. it was well in the 50s in the poconos today. we've done the calculations and taken the temperatures up to now and the projected forecast for the rest of the month, and we're going to end up number one by a good bit. the warmest february ever recorded in philadelphia. it goes back into the 1870s. we've got the clouds in now, but there's really no rain close by. that's for sure. so we don't have any kind of immediate threat, but it is going to be cloudy to start off the day. then the clouds break up during the afternoon, and the southern

wind pushes the temperatures up. a couple of showers during tomorrow evening, and friday we start off with clouds and maybe fog again. the clouds break up in the afternoon, pushes the temperature to 70 plus, and then we wait for saturday. saturday is when the cold front is coming through that's going to change all of this. and there it is. in the afternoon hitting harrisburg, so much of the day saturday is dry and warm, and then here we go. 7:30 saturday night, that's potential line of strong, gusty thunderstorms coming through the area. it is not going to rain all day saturday, but when it does, it can come down hard and we can have gusty winds, too. tomorrow by afternoon, 70 in fairmount, 67 in taconi, 6 in shwanksville and 70 in redding.
