identities. >> a message for president trump, from one republican to another. this is a disaster. and you can still fix it. you made a promise to protect the lgbtq community. >> in our town hall last april, mr. trump said jenner can use any bathroom. >> what we want to talk with steve kownacki and nicolle wallace. trump's team has done a good job teeing it up. he's going to do what he promised to do during the campaign. this audience had real fears about trump's conservative credentials. what do they want to hear from him? >> i remember saying at the republican convention, that the republican party died in the room that night. it's a symbol of how weak conservative was that trump jumped in anded his brand

of conservatism. >> what does he need to say? >> the question is what is he going to say? and he is going to say the same of what he's been saying. that conservism, is isolationism, and the things that animated conservatisms for two generations before it. >> campaign on the trail, then, candidate trump said for repeal and replace obamacare. and then, has john boehner in orlando, at the health care conference, saying, they shouldn't actually call it that because that's not what is going to happen. they're going to fix the flaws and put a more conservative box around it. we saw that in peter's piece. that's a guy that knows something about the legislative process. and he's saying that the obamacare nightmare is about to end. >> that's john boehner a guy that's waiting a few years to

have the freedom to say that. that's something he wanted to say and couldn't. that's the bind that republicans are in right now. he says, if you take this away right now, this entire program and you don't have a replacement, you own any of the failures that happen. and they haven't had a placement in a generation. >> repeal and replace makes a good bumper sticker. fix, does not. >> it does not. we had reporting that some of the early talks between outgoing president obama and incoming president trump, is doing just this. rebranding it and retweaking it. i think this has been the plan all along. >> really quick topic. military operation, that the president used in describing the round up and deportation of undocumented immigrants in this country. the white house tried to walk it back. did they succeed? >> there's a story how the generals, general kelly and general mattis' primary job is to do clean up and save face around the world. you see that in action, with general kelly going out and

saying that will not be the case. there will not be mass deportati deportations. you saw general manager saying we're not after iraq soil. the interesting people are the generals who seem to be doing clean-up sffull time. >> we saw it there, that on the complain trail, president trump said they should use the bathroom they identify with. what happened this? >> they're getting a lot of negative attention and criticism, and there's a big chunk of what the administration is doing here. it's worth realizing this issue, too, this country is really split on this. there's a lot of people out there who are onboard with where the administration is. and you look at how fast some of the cultural issues are changes. five years ago, president obama said he was opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds. a lot of people are not come as far as the liberals have on this issue. >> welcome back. good to see you. a reminder, on monday,

of previous complaints about neighborhood kids trampling the officer's long. >> let go of me. >> reporter: the confrontation quickly escalated as the officer and teen argue. >> i didn't say that. i said i'm going to sue you. >> reporter: after struggling with the boy for several minutes, the officer was surrounded by teenagers and tackled by one of them. before pulling a fun with and firing a single shot. police say the officer felt threatened and made the decision to use force. >> during the confrontation, it is alleged the 13-year-old boy made a threat against the officer that led the officer believe he was going to shoot him. >> reporter: today, city leaders and police are shaken by what they see. though the video does not show the entire encounter. >> i'm disturbed and angered by what it shows. the video shows an adult wrestling with a 13-year-old kid

and ultimately firing a gun. >> reporter: with police protecting one of their own, hunkered down across the street from the officer's property, which was vandalized during a rowdy protest wednesday night, neighbors are divided over what happened here. >> come to our property. they kick our stuff around. they shove stuff into our tree. you confront them and they're very bold. >> there's no reason for an officer to respond like that. they're trained to apprehend the person in a professional way. >> reporter: this morning, the dangerous confrontation that went from a struggle to a shooting, remains under investigation. but many here have seen enough. and are now drawing their own conclusions. two of the teens involved in the struggle were arrested and later released. but officials say every one involved including the officer could face control charges.

the investigation is expected to take a few weeks. matt and carson back to you guys. >> miguel, thank you very much. we now know what poison was used on the attack of the half-brother of north korea's leader. it was a banned and highly toxic nerve agent. kelly cobiella has more on this. >> reporter: good morning to you. another twist in this story. and a frightening one. the malaysian police chief says that vx nerve agent, classified as a weapon of mass destruction, was used in the terminal of a crowded international airport to kill kim jong-nam. this morning, police say two women wiped kim jong-nam's face with the deadly nerve agent vx. investigators said the alleged killers washed their hands after the attack. one woman seen on surveillance video holding her hands away from her body. police say one of them was sick and vomiting. and that tests from kim jong-nam's skin and eyes

confirmed the poison. >> vx nerve agent, which is a chemical weapon. >> reporter: vx or venomous agent x, a tasteless, odorless qui liquid. it's the deadliest agent ever created. drops on the skin can kill. and quickly. kim jong-nam had a seizure in the bloambulance and died befor reaching the hospital. north korea is believed to have the third-largest stockpile of chemical weapons. this morning, malaysian officials say they're sweeping the airport for any trace of the deadly liquid. investigating how it got to the country and who might have smuggled it here. at the north korean embassy at kuala lumpur this morning, more denials. >> this is a law. >> reporter: the north koreans deny they have been officially asked to cooperate. they say the investigation into the attack on kim jong-un's half-brother and one-time rival,

is flawed and still haven't acknowledged that he's dead. seven north koreans are wanted for questioning, including a senior diplomat, sceeen at the airport the day of the attack. and the malaysians say that diplomat is now in the north korean embassy in kuala lumpur. no sign that the north koreans will allow access to him. in fact, the war of words between the malaysians and the embassy is heating up. the malaysian foreign minister called the north korean ambassador delusional. matt? carsen? >> a story that gets more and more bizarre. let's turn to the countdown to the oscars. hollywood, the big night on sunday. joe fryer is out at the dolby theater in los angeles with a look ahead. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carson. they rolled out the red carpet that's covered by a white tarp. come sunday, this will be a runway for hollywood's biggest stars. while "la la land" has the most

on thursday, feature guests included mike pence. two washington, d.c. police officers recovering after being shot, wounded in a late-night shoot-out. it happened in a neighborhood on the city's northeast side. officials say the officers were shot in the lower part of their bodies. their injuries not life-threatening. the suspect was shot and killed. and a power plant that stood in cleveland for more than a century is now a pile of rubble. [ explosion ] crews set off explosives overnight, imploding the lake shore plant. it will be used for now as green space for the community. in the meantime, a hearing to decide if former prep school student owen labrie will be wrapped up right now. he claims that he received ineffecti ivive counsel. morgan radford is at the white

house up in new hampshire. morgan, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. owen labrie wants to tell his side of the story to a jury again. sentenced to one year, but out on bail. he's made a push for a retrial in the courthouse behind me. last night, i spoke with the father of his accuser, and he says there shouldn't be any redos. alex prout, said his daughter has come along way, since accusing owen labrie of sexual assault. >> she said, daddy, i'm no longer a victim. i'm a survivor. >> reporter: but he says seeing labrie is painful for his entire family. what's going through your mind? >> anger, heartbreak and disappointment. >> reporter: labrie is asking for a new trial, accusing his former defense counsel of dropping the ball. former lead attorney, j.w. karny denies it. >> do you believe your team

represented the defendant effectively at trial? >> yes. >> reporter: he says he presented damaging evidence from being presented in court. >> i put my heart and soul into this case. and did everything i could to help owen receive justice. >> reporter: labrie's trial got worldwide attention, with emotional testimony from his accuser, chessie prout. >> i was raped. >> guilty. >> reporter: labrie was convicted of sexual assault, child endangerment and using a computer to lure a minor for sex, a felony requiring him to register as a sex offender for life. but he was acquitted of the most serious charge, rape. chessy, first revealing her identity in an exclusive interview with savannah last summer. >> i feel ready to stand up and own what happened to me, and let other people know they can own it, too. >> reporter: now, speaking out

"silence" had a big ad buy and got a less buzzy cinematography nomination. but strategists like dennis rice say, whatever the result, they shape how art gets seen. >> it gives the audience permission to understand the movie from the right context. >> reporter: you know, viewers are going to hear a very, very skilled guy that's run a lot of the campaigns saying, we're giving the audience permission to see the movie in the way we want them to see the movie. it's almost like sci-ops here. >> it would be an overstatement to say we can manipulate the audience. the best we can hopeful is they'll watch the movie, agree with us or not, and vote based

we'll talk to michelle exclusively. first, "dateline's" dennis murphy has her story. >> reporter: the charges and the headlines were devastating to michelle hadley's parents, michael and suzanne. they couldn't, wouldn't believe it. nothing in character with the michelle you've raised here. >> not at all. >> reporter: police say michelle sent threatening e-mails to a woman named ang in a diaz. she had married michelle's ex-fiance. >> there was clear and compelling and convincing evidence, to believe that michelle hadley was the person sending the e-mails. >> reporter: then, the cyber threats became darker, and even dangerous. michelle was responding to rape fantasy ads in angela's name. and directing men to angela's home. angela called 911, saying one of the men attacked her. this is beyond internet misdemeanor mischief. this is a criminal act. >> most definitely. >> reporter: michelle was arrested, but insisted she was innocent. it took months.

but eventually, police and prosecutors unravel the complex computer forensic. the d.a. delivered the stunning news. >> i'm here to announce the filing of a felony complaint, against angela marie diaz. >> reporter: in an already beyond strange case, this turned things up to 11. the d.a. said angela diaz was the mastermind and sole actor in an elaborate scheme to portray herself as a victim. she had framed michelle hadley. >> michelle is accused of being angela, who turned out to be angela, pretending to be michelle, pretending to be angela. >> reporter: the chargers were that convoluted. angela, accused of sending herself threatening e-mails. inflicting injuries on herself. and all to put her husband's ex-girlfriend behind bars. what's more, at least for a few months, authorities say she succeeded. >> we should mention, angela

diaz has pleaded not guilty. michelle hadley is with us exclusively, along with her attorney, michael juste. good morning. what's it like to live through this? >> horrifying. it is like your worst might mare coming true. >> reporte >> when you were being accused of all these things, of sending threatening e-mails, of sending men to angela's house to have sex with her forcibly, you're telling the police, i'm not doing this. this has nothing to do with me. did you get any sense for a second, they believed you? >> no. i got the sense that it was quite the opposite. i got the sense they didn't want to hear my side of the story. >> there is a little extra part of this. when the relationship with your ex-fiance broke up, you did send some e-mails to him that were nasty. >> i wouldn't call them nasty. but the language that i used was more forceful than i normally take. but the tone and the language was very different from what angela was using. >> if you read the e-mails as a

police officer, do you think it would have led you to be a likely suspect in what was happening with angela diaz? >> i think the police have a responsibility to do a true, thorough investigation, regardless of what they suspect off of something speculative. >> we reached out to the anaheim police department for comment. here's what they said. we believe our actions were appropriate, based on the evidence known to us at the time. in addition, it was the persistent efforts of the detective who ultimately uncovered the truth that led to michelle's exoneration. how do you feel about that? >> i believe that the police had enough information available to them before they arrested me the first time, to know it wasn't me doing it. >> ironically, angela diaz, although she's pleaded not guilty, she's being held in the same jail where you spent three months. that's an unbelievable twist. >> yeah. it is very weird to watch the case from the other side now and

having gone through that knowing what it's like. >> did you have any contact with her? did you have any relationship with her? ever met her? >> no. not before any of this happened. i had no idea who she was. out of the blue i'm getting a e restraining order from her. >> you have any idea why she had this feeling towards you? >> i have my theories. >> what's your theory? >> well, there was a condo issue. and to me, it's about the condo. because otherwise, what threat am i? i was out of the picture. >> michael, you've called this the ultimate identity theft. >> the perfect storm of catfishing. >> yeah. and you filed a lawsuit. >> there's a process in california. but we're in that process, yes. >> so, what do you think the outcome of this will be? and what's the cautionary tale here? >> what the outcome is going to be is that michelle's name is being cleared. anaheim is going to have to be

call it how we call it. he fits well with us. >> he's a business man. and the country should be run like a business. >> reporter: but some of wisconsin's larger dairies worry that this week's sweeping changes to immigration policy could hurt business. john also supports donald trump. but says his dairy can't survive would immigrants. >> the cows need to be milked every day same time. they're filling the void of the jobs people don't want to do anyway. they love their work. they love to work. they make a good living and send money back home. it's a big deal. >> reporter: many of his employees are scared they will be deported. but he still supports the president. >> fix the system so they can fill the zbloobs jobs that we n.

>> reporter: back at the la plant farm, holly is hoping to take over the farm from her dad. she is firm in her support for president trump. what about the tweeting? do you like that he tweets? or do you think he gets himself in trouble? >> it's just his way. he doesn't have to change who he was from previous just because he is now the president. should he try to do things a little differently? yes. but he doesn't have to change who he is. that defeats the purpose of us voting for him in the first place. >> he's ruffling a lot of feathers, which is what we were looking for. i don't know. people just need to give him a chance. we did that with obama. we gave him a chance. now, let's give this guy a chance. >> reporter: what advice do you have for him? >> you any he will call me? >> he might. >> that would be the greatest thing that could happen if we could get him on a small dairy. have him come out and walk around with his boots on, like you. >> reporter: exit polls show 63%

of wisconsin voters had a negative opinion of donald trump on election day. but 21% of those who viewed him unfavorably, voted for him anyway. >> that's fascinating. were those people hoping that trump would come through for him? >> those people felt like someone was speaking to them for the first time. the thing that he said that just struck me, struck a nerve, that people that worked with their hands had been ignored for so long. >> and the perception that democrats would told them down on jobs. now, they have a switch. and they feel like mr. trump was the answer. >> and the heartening piece for his critics is nothing is lost on him. none of his missteps are lost on the voters. >> fascinating stuff. >> thanks. next, how about show breakfast from the likes of martha stewart and katie lee right now? some of the tips of the day coming for you. we'll go back down to florida and al. first, this is "today" on nbc.
