>> it is cruising. hard to keep up with. we have a story that involves it today. our top story. president trump coming to defense of attorney general jeff sessions, amid a legal and political firestorm over his meetings with russia's ambassador. we're learning about more talks between the trump campaign and russian officials. we have it all covered, beginning with hallie jackson at the white house for us this morning. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt. good morning to you. and this morning, president trump is aiming his anger at the democrats, demanding jeff sessions resign. the president also lashing out at leaks. but emphasizing he has total confidence in his attorney general. repaying sessions' long-time loyalty with some of his own. this morning, a defiant defense of his attorney general. president trump calling jeff sessions an honest man, after the revelation sessions, as a senator, spoke with the russian ambassador, but didn't disclose

it at his confirmation hearing when asked about xacampaign contacts. >> i have been called a surrogate at a time or two. and i didn't have contact with the russians. >> reporter: now? >> in retrospect, i should have slowed down and said i did meet one russian official a couple of times. >> reporter: the president, in a statement, said sessions could have stated his response more accurately. but it was clearly not intentional. then, blaming democrats. quote, they lost the election and now they have lost their grip on reality. ending, it is a total witch hunt. >> i think it was hyped beyond reason. and i think it was unfair. i was glad to be able to address it today. >> reporter: hours earlier, the president was asked if he thought sessions should recuse himself from any investigation involving the campaign and russia's involvement in it. >> i don't think so at all. >> reporter: but ultimately, sessions decided to do just that, to avoid even the appearance of a conflict. >> i have recused myself in the

faces fire. indy star saying that mike pence used a private e-mail account to discuss business as governor of indiana. adding that personal account was hacked. but the vice president's office says he fully complied with indiana law regarding e-mail use and retention. during the campaign, the then-governor slammed hillary clinton for her use of a private e-mail servicer. >> we have hillary clinton and her team, trying to delete almost 18,000 e-mails. >> reporter: but his spokesman overnight, calling any comparison absolutely absurd. the vice president's office tells nbc news, pence, then a governor at the time, did take additional security measures on that personal account. new this morning, by the way, we are hearing from moscow about the contacts or communications between members of the trump administration and folks back at the kremlin. the russian foreign minister echoing the same language president trump used, calling it

a witch hunt. the president, today, gets back on the road, heading to orlando to talk education reform before spending another weekend at his mar-a-lago estate. we have politics questions. we have legal questions. and i'll start with you, ari. just the mechanics of this. jeff sessions reku s recuses f investigation. the deputy attorney general. but the deputy attorney general answers to the attorney general. is an independent counsel still a possibility here? >> a recusal means the a.g. is completely out. not on the job. not overseeing it. not being briefed. that's supposed to create independence. fuller independence would come if you had an independent prosecutor, who would start up the entire investigation clean. >> the whole situation with russia is driving headlines every, single day. i want to play a piece of tape. this is carter page, a trump

campaign adviser, being questioned by chris hayes on msnbc, with a potential meeting he had. >> did you meet sergey kislyak in cleveland? did you talk to him? >> i'm not going to deny i talked to him. >> you talked to him. >> i will say i never met him anywhere outside of cleveland. let's just say that much. >> the only time you met him was in cleveland? >> i may have met him, possibly, might have been in cleveland. >> we have more and more people who are being questioned about contacts with the russians. we have two people at least who have had to admit they misled others about their conversations or meetings with the russians. i'm going to put you on the spot. explain this away for me. you're team trump. tell me why this is much ado about nothing. >> it's inexplicable why so many people had so many meetings with so many russians they forgot about. the best way to clean that up would be to get ahead of the story and appoint -- if you want

it oke take it out of your recused justice department, you can look at what happened after 9/11, where there was a bipartisan commission. if i were the white house, i would spend time this weekend thinking about a bipartisan -- maybe a james baker and a vernon jordan. having people look at the question of russian interference. >> you can't give me one great answer as to why all this would be happening, simple, logical explanation. >> there is none. so many people having so many contacts and not remembering. they're either the most forgetful team in political history or the most intimate with russia. >> couldn't you make an argument that having an independent counsel would be good for the white house because they can say, there's nothing going on. we're out of it. what is the downside of that? >> it would be good for them if they want to get to the bottom of it. you saw the statement by president trump over the election. this isn't about who won or lost the election. there's a foreign adversary that our intelligence agency was trying to undermine the united

states. you expect the administration want to get to the bottom of it. the other important headline is that jeff sessions is recusing only from the campaign piece. that stops at november 8th. but everyone knows the fbi looking at conduct during the transition period in the administration. so, he's half-recused on a problem that's more than half a story. >> there's no firm evidence of the trump campaign with collusion of the russians. if you're jared kushner and you're listening to all of the stories about michael flynn, from several weeks ago, about his discussions with the russian ambassador, wouldn't you raise your hand in an effort of full transparency and say, i want to get on the record, i was at a meeting between the two of them, as well? >> yeah. and here's the reason why. that meeting, the one you're talking about, happened in december, the day after the -- the week after president obama announced sanctions against russia. there's the appearance that some of that meeting was to discuss the sanctions.

>> why wouldn't you raise your hand and get ahead of this? >> it gets back to forgetfulness, which is the most generous explanation, or trying to cover something up. >> we just learned about this jared kushner aspect of it yesterday. thank you so much. have a good weekend. now, to breaking news overnight. the u.s. conducting a series of air strikes against al qaeda sites in yemen. nbc's chief global correspondent, bill neely, has the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: this is one of the heaviest attack on yemen in years. the u.s. aircraft to carrying out a series of air strikes in two days, the first since a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. was killed in the same area in january. and it may be evidence of a new aggressive campaign against al qaeda in gem yemen. there were 20 raids yesterday, using drones and apache helicopters. and witnesses in southern yemen this morning, reported by

reuters say, the air attacks have continued. the pentagon won't confirm local reports that u.s. commandos were dropped on the ground to fight al qaeda militants. senior intelligence sources tell nbc news, these raids are the result of new orders from the white house, described as an aggressive gloves-off attempt to defeat al qaeda. and they come five weeks after that first commando operation, authorized by president trump. an operation in which a navy s.e.a.l., william ryan owens was killed. mr. trump giving that tribute in congress to his widow, karen, saying ryan's legacy is etched in eternity. he insisted it was a successful raid that generated vital intelligence. the latest raids were in the same area that ryan owens were killed, they are not the direct result of that intelligence. the targets were already known weeks ago. one of them, a local al qaeda leader. now, al qaeda in yemen still poses a direct threat to the u.s.

its bombmakers have targeted u.s. planes. these raids suggest president trump and the pentagon are on a new fast track to try to end that threat. matt? savannah? >> bill neely, thank you very much. back to washington. a couple of cabinet picks to tell you about. rick perry was sworn in thursday as energy secretary. the senate confirmed him by a vote of 62-37. and dr. ben carson, sworn in as the secretary of housing and urban development. he was sworn in a 58-39 vote. let's go to tennessee and the urgent manhunt for the killer wanted for the killing of a nurse. nashville police hopes this surveillance video will help them crack the case. the hooded suspect seen here was checking for unlocked cars tuesday morning, minutes before he snuck into an apartment and stabbed tiffany ferguson to

death. the burglar entered the apartment through an unlocked door and raided it for valuables. they believe it was a random act. now, to wall street, where investors are wrapping up what has been a historic week. fueling more excitement on thursday, the highly anticipated debut of snapchat's parent company. jo ling kent is on the floor of the u.s. stock exchange for us this morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. snap investors are waking up happier and quite a bit wealthier this morning. the app got a huge bump when it was traded here on the stock exchange. snapchat surging to a whopping $35 billion debut. a strong showing for 26-year-old ceo and co-founder, evan spiegel. making more than $5 billion thursday alone. his fiancee, model miranda kerr, front and center. recording videos with goofy

filters, snapping pictures and sharing them on, what else? snapchat. 158 million people use the app every day. most between 18 and 34 years old. checking that more than 18 times daily. and spending about 30 minutes every day using it. nbc news universal, the parent company of nbc news, has a business relationship with snap. the game to fame, the photos and videos you can share that disappear in ten seconds. >> you don't have to worry about someone digging through it five years from now and pulling up embarrassing photo of you in middle school. as soon as it's gone, it's gone. >> reporter: why do you like snapchat so much? >> it's really concise. it's a photograph with a caption. you get to communicate the entirety of what you're doing quickly and efficiently. >> reporter: and the ground swell on wall street shows that investors are excited.

we're back at 7:41. more on the historic run we're seeing on wall street. the dow topping 21,000 points for the first time ever this week. and you may be wondering, how can you make the most of your money in a bull market like this? msnbc's ali velshi is here with us. >> good morning. good to see you again. >> we see 21,000. should i get in? is there still time? >> it depends on who you are. and to starts with your age. how much time you have before retirement. there's going to be booms and busts and bear markets and bull markets. if you have enough time to play it out, that's important for you. your age is one of the most important things. number two, how much money do you have? is this extra money or money for the kids' graduation or your house or something like that? that's important. and the risk profile. really easy to get this. you have a financial adviser and you can go up on the internet and look up risk profile, it's a

how do you determine? >> it's hard for us to. because it's based on a price-to-earnings ratio that's calculated. it has to do how much a company will make next year. the bottom line is, we're not at the ratios we are at during the tech bubble. that's why people say the market is not overvalued right now. but one never actually know. so, you should not be going after individual stocks in the market. if you're going go mutual funds, it balances your risk over 20 or more stocks per fund. >> a lot of people are watching with excitement. they saw the snapchat company public offering. a lot of people became millionaires, billionaires in some cases. we have potential hot stocks. >> tech stocks. >> buy all of these, right? >> airbnb, spotify, pinterest, drop box. a lot of people became millionaires. virtually no regular people did. the people who buy into these companies early, makes a lot of money. you're a sucker if you start

don't use a mcintosh, they're too mushy. you want to think honey crisp. first, you're going to peel your apple. always cut the flat side on something round. then, you quarter it and cut the core out. the simplest way to do it. you're just going to do thin slices. stack these. and then, you're going to julienne them. it's easy. one little trick is to rub lemon juice on your knife and cutting board. so they don't turn brown. you're going to add that to a bowl. and stir it. i will add the mayonnaise. >> i don't have -- >> take this. toss those. those things. >> oh, these. >> i know. i didn't learn to cook on my maternity leave. that's clear. >> you know, you're going to add some ground pepper. and some salt. >> okay. >> liberally do some salt. it will need some seasoning.

everybody should know how to make, it's lasagna. >> word on the street is that you make a mean vegetable lasagna. >> i like meat. but i like getting the vegetables in and do a couple meatless meals a week. here's your recipe grid. >> all eight out here. what vegetables? >> we have zucchini and peppers and onion and garlic. you take a box of lasagna. i don't mind the no-boil lasagna because it saves a step. heavily salted water and bring that to a boil. while that's happening, you have chopped up veggies. a couple of zucchini, swash, qu peppers, onions and garlic. there's few things that are as good as the smell of garlic sauteing in your house. you want to saute until it gets a little soft.

you have your cooked veggies. you can add a store-purchased marinara sauce. other thing, you get a can of crushed tomatoes. >> any spaghetti sauce will work. >> yeah. just the crushed tomatoes, there's less sugar. and pepper flakes and basil. and get that nice and toasty. for your filling, ricotta cheese, a couple eggs, salt and pepper. >> you find yourself halfway through and you don't have ricotta cheese. >> cottage cheese will work. you're going to mix that up. get a nice almost like cheese batter going. all right? now, you have your noodles that cooled off. >> you don't want to cook them all the way through? >> why is that? >> this will go back in and bake.

>> it will continue cooking. >> you put some sauce in the beginning. and then, a layer of your lasagna down. and then, you're going to take some of your mixture here. >> has it okay to overlap the noodles? >> you can. it's going to cook. they're going to expand a little bit. you'll go and keep doing this layer by layer. >> this is havn on a plate. >> how many layers? >> as deep as your dish is? >> what did you use here? this is what i want. the tomatoes. >>tomatoes. i love them. and a little parmesan. and then, you just layer, layer. you have it all filled up. going to take mozzarella. going to put that on the top. >> how much longer do you bake it for? >> you cover it up with foil. 40 minutes at 400. and you take the foil off. cook another ten minutes. and you end up with something like that. >> amazing.
