daealing with the aftermath of a fire. a look at how local women are taking a stand for gender equality. the local zoo that wants you to get in on the naming. having fun with these new jaguar cubs. and right now, still a big impact. yesterday's fire at a peco substation continues to cause widespread trouble this morning. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. >> and i'm rosemary connors. peco hopes to have power

restored within the next hour or so. deanna durante is live. >> reporter: we're getting some up close looking here at the damage here. you can see how widespread this substation, one of the main substations in the area, delivering power to thousands of people in philadelphia. at its peak 36,000 customers. that's not people. that's homes. there could be multiple people in the homes and multiple people in the businesses. we're told about 3,000 customers still in the dark right now. however, peco hoping to have the lights back on by 2:00 this afternoon. for some customers, it could be early evening. what's still unknown is what caused this fire that broke out. flames crawling all over the peco substation here. a very difficult fire for firefighters to put out. we're told they had to shut down all the power coming to the substation before firefighters could try to put it out with water. what we don't know again how it

started and how long it will take to fix the damage. we're told that crews will be investigating that as well as trying to figure out how to prevent this from happening in the future. they do know they have some video surveillance they'll be looking at here, but right now the points that they're trying to make is they are working to get the power on to those 3,000 customers that are still without power. we're told that they are mainly isolated here in this area. hoping to have those lights back on in the next couple of hours. reporting live in knig. >> stay tuned for updates. the power outages have had an impact on traffic in the area. jess, fill us in. >> we do have some road closures in the area because of that. fox street in the area is still closed between roberts avenue right around allegheny avenue.

more traffic problems just in our normal morning and into the afternoon commute as well. this is the schuylkill expressway. our cameras right around south street. this is the south side. this is one of the south street onramps. we had an accident scene here. right here are cars that are trying to come on and merge onto the highway on the eastbound side from that ramp starting to back up off that ramp. in bordentown township, a utility pole down just around route 545 southbound. the morning rain has moved out, but the winds are sticking around. still it's another mild day throughout our area. we'll give you a live look from center city philadelphia. first alert meteorologist erika

martin is here now with our forecast. perfect day other than a little bit of wind. >> that's right, vai and rosemary. we have those increasing winds and wind gusts behind a cold front sweeping across the delaware valley. 18 for coatesville and 20 for millville. considering the atmosphere is pretty much really dry right now, those fires don't help with this wind. keep in mind if you see anything, be sure you call 911. a live look outside right now. you're seeing mostly clear skies. neighborhoods right now in and around philadelphia seeing lots of 50s. port richmond, 55. fox chase at 54. parkside, 56 degrees for you. center city, 58. rittenhouse, 55. graduate hospital currently at 52 degrees. but your temperature trend, it will read differently by this upcoming weekend.

we go from 60s for today and tomorrow. however, by friday, we're seeing temperatures dip well below average. we're going to see 30s by friday. i'm also tracking the potential for some wintry type weather, including some light snow and a wintry mix. coming up, i do have your most accurate ten-day forecast. back to you. philadelphia police are looking for the men who hurt a baby during a home invasion. police tell us the mother was holding the baby when three men barged into the home and demanded money. one of the robbers violently shoved the infant to the floor. the infant is expected to be okay. the men got away with cash and two cell phones. one man is in the hospital after being shot during a robbery. it happened overnight in the oxford circle neighborhood. three men were taking a piece of exercise equipment into a home around 1:00 a.m. when they were confronted by two robbers. the robbers took $450 from the victims and shot one of them in the leg. police are looking at

surveillance video for leads. police hope new video will help them catch a pair of violent robbers. they were caught on surveillance video last month hanging out on a playground in port richmond. then they went after a 67-year-old man watching on edgemont street. the victim had to be treated at the hospital after they beat him on the head. they were seen outside of inspired brews on north third street saturday morning. one man broke a window and took money from the cash register. he ran off. if you happen to recognize these suspects, philadelphia police would like to hear from you. in south jersey, police hope you can help them catch a bank robber. a man held up a pnc bank in lumberton yesterday afternoon. the teller handed it over. he then took off. if you happen to recognize him, lumberton police want to hear

from you. women are being asked to take the day off to show just how important they are. >> women are calling for a day without women, asking women to take the day off from work and to refrain from shopping. pamela osborne is live in east falls this morning. >> reporter: we just got done speaking with a group of students from eastern university academy charter school. their day started like this. they showed up to class. at 8:15 they quietly stood up and walked out. they made their way to a park in east falls where they held a rally. about 100 students participated in a day without a woman. they are joined by women from more than 50 countries all around the world. women organizers are encouraging women to take the day off. for ladies who can't, wear red

to show your solidarity for pay and reproductive rights and lgbtq rights. i spoke with one woman. here's a little bit of what she said. >> we want the women to come together in the schools so we can show we care and we're in power. we're not just here to cook, clean, and do the regular things. >> reporter: and they aren't returning to the classroom either. after the rally, they went back to school and got on buses. they were taken to center city where they would participate in the many women's day events that are happening right now. as those ladies were leaving, a male staff member stood in front of the door and tried to block them from getting out. they said no way, no how. we'll tell you about that at 11:30. nbc10 news. this morning police continue to search for a serial kidnapper in delaware. there have been three attacks in the past month at three

different apartment complexes. the most recent was at the preserve at deacons walk apartments. we spoke with the woman's boyfriend. he says the man tried to rob his girlfriend. she used her elbow to hit the buzzer for her front door. he flung open the front door and scared off the attacker. >> she's the hero. she did everything the best she could. she couldn't have done anything different, and i'm proud of her and i love her. >> the kidnappings has put the community on edge. a local gunsh shop owner says h has seen more women buy pepper spray to protect themselves. investigators are looking into the discovery of a man's body. a man using a metal detecter discovered the body along an old railroad bed in bethlehem

township. the coroner is working to find out how he died. staffers at the exeter community library in reading say they found swastikas and a note from three teens confessing to the crime. they asked for forgiveness and left $50 for the cleanup. the debate over the new health care bill is set to get underway on capitol hill today. we'll have those details ahead. plus, scare in the air. the incident that forced a commercial jet to make an emergency landing this morning. and i'm tracking some wintry weather by the end of this workweek that really could cause a headache for the friday morning commute. details coming up in your most accurate forecast. see you then.

of a price tag. blaine alexander has more from washington. >> those state insurance markets are in collapse. >> reporter: a republican party divided as two house committees meet this morning to debate and amend the american health care act. conservative republicans are already calling the obamacare replacement bill dead on arrival. >> this needs to be changed in a dramatic way for it to have a chance to pass in my judgment. >> reporter: that's why some conservatives are introducing their own plan focusing on ending obamacare. >> republicans are in agreement on repeal, but we're not in agreement on replacement. >> reporter: this despite a personal pitch from the white house and this tweet from president trump. i feel sure that my good friend rand paul will come along with the new and great health care program. republican leadership and the white house mounting a full court press. >> we're absolutely convinced it will be more possible for more people to get better care at the doctor under this plan than it

was under obamacare. >> reporter: some republicans say slow down. this needs more discussion. >> i don't think we need to introduce legislation on monday and have one chance to amend it on monday. that's what they did with obamacare. >> reporter: the white house promises the price tag will be available before the bill goes to a vote. blaine alexander, nbc news washington. the trump administration could announce as early as this week plans to roll back federal fuel economy requirements. in january, the obama administration locked in a requirement that all new cars should average 54 miles per gallon by 2025. the -- there morning investigators are trying to figure out exactly why a tour bus stopped on the train tracks in mississippi causing a deadly crash. four people are dead.

dozens more are hurt. seven of them are in critical condition. the bus was on its way from a senior center in austin, texas, to a casino. new this morning a united flight makes a safe landing after a bird strike. the plane was on its way from tampa to houston when it had to turn around and make an emergency landing after hitting a bird. fortunately nobody was hurt. i'm first alert meteorologist erika martin with your most accurate forecast. we're seeing clearing skies from west to east as a cold front sweeps on through. satellite and radar image picking up on that first cold front sweeping on from west to east. notice it is well offshore, but we're tracking a second cold front sweeping from the southwest to southeast. we can see the blue arrows headed in our direction, meaning we have some colder air moving in.

in another moment i'll track some wintry presip by the end of this week. winds are mild. atlantic city, 13 mile-per-hour wind speeds for you. hour-by-hour forecast very interesting. the shift in the winds as the second cold front sweeps on through. right now we're seeing mainly westerlies. we pause this later tonight. we start to see a little bit of a shift here. we do have some weather on its way here. as that cold front moved on down from the northwest to the southeast, notice by 11:30 p.m. on thursday we start to see northerly winds here. that's going to be the same story for early friday morning. in one moment i'll tell you why. above average temperatures for this time of year. allentown, 53. nazareth currently at 52. bethlehem, 54. walnut port just a little cooler at 51 degrees.

weekend high temperatures. we are going to stay in the 60s for today. now by tomorrow we dip just a little bit more, but by friday temperatures will be below average and hovering around the freezing mark, especially for the lehigh valley. we're also tracking some wintry weather, including some light snow and a little bit of a wintry mix for some. i'll time that out for you hour by hour. on saturday, we see a mix of sun and clouds. there was a system we were tracking, but it will stay south of the delaware valley. however, temperatures will be colder behind that next cold front. on sunday, temperatures will rebound just a little bit. we're going to mainly see some 30s out there. hour-by-hour forecast, we get this started. notice by thursday 6:00, 6:30 p.m., the introduction of some clouds moving in from west to east. then by thursday night at 11:00 p.m. you'll start to see some weather moving in for parts of lehigh valley.

some sleet and light snow and rain moving in. the temperatures will be colder, below the freezing mark, especially overnight thursday into friday that will set up the ingredients for that light snow to move on through. it is not going to be a terrible situation. the terrible situation will be that it is going to be during the early morning commute on friday, so keep this in mind. look at this. it's 5:00 a.m. we're seeing blues on the screen. by 8:00 a.m., same deal. not very organized, but the issue will be for that morning commute. everything starts to improve later in the day. the temperature drop by friday into saturday and sunday, and for the most part as the polar jet dips on down we're going to stay below average for the next several days. tracking the potential for some wintry weather on tuesday. back to you. hey, what's in a name? a local zoo shows off its newest additions and asks for your help in naming these cuddly little cubs.

top innovators in the technology, media, nonprofit, and creative sectors will join forces once again for the south by southwest interactive music festival in austin. dave silver is the president and co-founder of rex philly and he is here with the executive director of philly's start-up leaders. tell us about amplify philly and the success you had last year at south by southwest. >> this is the second year we're going down there. the goal is to collaborate with some of the top musicians to amplify philadelphia as one of the top cities in the world and hopefully to attract some of the stars to move to philadelphia and call philadelphia their home. >> you have all certainly austin and south by southwest is a

current wind gusts notice we're starting to see some stuff on the screen here. toms river, 24 for you. millville, 25 mile-per-hour wind gusts. not wind speed, so keep that in mind. the next three days we're seeing a definite cooldown by this weekend, certainly by friday. temperatures topping out only in the 30s, and we are tracking a wintry mix and possibly some light snow, especially for the early friday morning commute. we dip into the 50s in the lehigh valley on thursday. clouds will develop for the second half of the day into friday. temperatures only topping out in the 30s on friday. that is going to be the same deal on saturday and sunday. in fact, on saturday we're seeing lots of 20s. rosemary and vai, back to you. we have sky force 10 live over breaking news. we have limited information, but we want to tell you exactly what we know. philadelphia police are telling us a child fell out of this window on the second story of this building on diamond street.

we're going to pull back and show you the building here. we're told the child was taken to saint christopher's hospital for children. an adult is also being treated at temple university hospital. we're working to find out their conditions and the circumstances of this situation. stay with nbc10 and the nbc10 app for updates. an attack on a military hospital in afghanistan has killed more than 30 people. >> matt bradley has more on how the terrorists made it to the heavily guarded area. >> reporter: the latest information from afghan officials is that this attack is over and all the assailants have been killed. isis has claimed responsibility over a twitter account they typically use, but they offered no evidence. isis has in the past claimed responsibility for attacks that weren't their's, but the number of dead has spiked. according to officials on the

ground, more than 30 have been killed and some 50 have been wounded. the attack was on one of kabul's main military hospitals. there were four acssailants tha entered through the back of the hospital. the first detonating himself. it is one of the afghan capital's top facilities. hospitals are typically surrounded by high levels of security. this one, a 400 bed hospital, is one of the most secure. observers of afghanistan have warned that the taliban and other groups like islamic state are likely to increase their attacks in 2017. back to you. well, girl power is on display today around the nation and here at home. >> organizers of the recent women's marches are calling for a day without women, asking

women to not go to work and refrain from shopping. pam, what are you hearing from women today? >> reporter: we actually talked to a big group of students who were out and about in center city right now participating in some of those events that are happening here locally. the students you see in this video, they're from eastern university academy charter school. their day started like this. they showed up to class and at 8:15 they quietly stood up and walked out. they made their way to mcdevott park in east falls. about 100 students participated in a day without a woman. they are joined by women from more than 50 countries around the world. women's march organizers who were behind the demonstration back in january are encouraging women to take the day off. for ladies who can't, wear red to show your solidarity for equal pay, reproductive rights, and a whole host of other

issues. when somebody tried to stop these ladies from participating today, let's just say that wasn't happening. >> we had planned -- the ladies did plan we were going to get up and walk out unannounced, which we did. one of our male staff members was kind of blocking the door today. we just kind of said move him out of the way. you're not going to block us. it was kind of interesting that that happened today. >> reporter: after the rally, they walked back to school, but they didn't go inside. instead they got on buses. they were taken, as i said, to center city where they would participate in some of the many women's day events that are happening here. one group is going to be talking with a city council member. another group participating in a march. just a lot of different ways women, even young women, are getting involved here. reporting live in east falls, i'm pamela osborne. nbc10 news. meanwhile the lights are back on at the statue of liberty after the famous landmark went dark last night. the parks service blames the unplanned outage on construction

work, but social media went crazy with speculation that the statue went dark as a show of solidarity for the day without women strike. how do you convince a police officer you are not driving under the influence? field sobriety tests maybe? not for this college student. he had a unique way to prove he wasn't drunk driving. he pulled out his juggling skills and started showing off his skills. the officer said it was the most entertaining thing he had seen and no ticket for a broken taillight for the student. 76ers, they're raising money to help kids across the delaware valley. money raised from the second annual gala goes to the kids

husband put a sign in their yard pleading for one. >> big sign. she says she has a whole new life now. just six weeks after surgery, serena crawford says she's recovering well. earlier this year her husband bill posted a sign at their georgetown home pleading for a new kidney for her. a few days later the university of maryland called with a perfect match. >> now i don't feel like i have any restrictions. i am free to go, and i feel absolutely terrific. >> bill crawford has since put the sign away. the couple plans to travel in an rv that they just purchased. he is a 15-year-old who likes super heroes and animals. the teen you're about to meet tells us he would love to have a pet someday. >> but what he wants most is a forever family. i would like you to meet miguel, this week's wednesday's child. today we're taking miguel to one

spoken language in our country, and getting into college can be difficult if you don't speak english. that's where la salle university's program comes in. it's the answer many college bound students have been looking for. >> what is justice? >> reporter: like many of her friends, natasha santos had a dream of going to college, but she knew she needed more work. >> my essays, my vocabulary, my grammar. >> reporter: english is not natasha's primary language. most of the classes that are taught are in english, a big problem. >> students who want to go to college, but just don't have the language skills. >> reporter: she heads up the busca program at the school. in a nutshell -- >> for most of our students, the only way that they would get

into a four-year institution. >> reporter: by getting an associate's degree, learning english, and more. geovany just graduated in january. he looked at other options that just didn't fit. >> i had to spend about a year or a year and a half just learning english without any academic credit. in this case because outside of english, i was also getting academy credits, which saved me a lot of time. >> reporter: since the early 90s when it started, upwards 800 students have made it through busca. >> every day you have the opportunity to help somebody that otherwise would not be a college student. >> reporter: like natasha. >> this is a nice way to get that started. >> yes, this is a nice way because now i can have the support. >> reporter: more than half of the students keep going to earn their bachelor's degree. geovany is going for information

technology and natasha is looking at business administration. on this international women's day, we recognize the contributions women from all walks of life have made and continue to make today, and we're celebrating the life of a true trailblazer, madame c.j. walker. she developed a hair care line for women more than 100 years ago. local leaders will gather to celebrate walker's accomplishments on saturday as well as those of so many people who followed in her footsteps. we have the president of the chapter of the national coalition for women. a scholarship luncheon is happening this saturday. tell us about your organization and what you do. >> okay. we are an organization that's been around for about 33 years. we do advocacy for women, and we

do a lot of community work. we have several women that belong in the organization throughout the city of philadelphia, so we just enjoy being the voice for some women that don't have the voice. >> as you both know, today's being recognized as international women's day and also a day without a woman. tell me why it's so important to make sure that we take a moment to pause and recognize the contribution that women have made. >> well, as you know, it's important because without women we wouldn't be able to do a lot of the things because it's women that really took on the voice for women's suffrage, for voting rights, and it's women that -- we're the only human beings that can have children, put them on our backs, and continue working for the day. it's important. >> this is the 31st annual lu h

are tracking a dry start on thursday, but some clouds and some rain, possibly a wintry mix, make it into the lehigh valley by about 11:00 p.m. on thursday. it looks like your friday morning commute may be a little bit of a headache because we could see some snow and a wintry mix. for this weekend, a cold blast in full effect. frigid overnight temperatures. we are seeing some light returns. this is not making it to the ground. those shores are offshore. that cold front pushing everything offshore. however, we do have a secondary cold front sweeping on down from the northwest. notice right here i say cold blast and i do mean it. wait until you see those ten-day on 10 forecasts. we have that cold air sliding into place right here, so all of this is due here by friday into saturday and sunday. current winds right now are moderate. we're seeing 17 mile-per-hour wind speeds for wilmington, 18

for toms river, and 16 for allentown. current temperatures right now are actually pretty mild. notice right now that the winds are starting to pick up you can see because of the flags. the clouds right now -- i mean, right now it is really nice. mostly sunny skies. 56 degrees in philadelphia. mt. holly, 54 for you. wilmington, 57. coatesville current temperature 54 degrees. average high in philadelphia for this time of year, 53 degrees. the record high 80 degrees set back in 2000. well, we're not going to get there for today, but still a very nice day nonetheless. 41 for trenton tonight. mt. holly, 42 degrees for you. a very mild night. allentown, 38. atlantic city, 41. vineland, your expected overnight low 40 degrees. future temperatures, i do have a few pause points here because i want to show you the drirection of the winds by thursday into

friday. westerly winds and mainly 50s. temperatures above average. by thursday, we start to see temperatures are still pretty comfortable. however thursday into friday we see a shift in those winds. by friday, at 11:00 a.m. we're seeing straight northerlies. notice temperatures at 11:00 a.m. 39 in philly. trenton, 36. burlington, 38. west chester, a chilly 38 degrees. hour-by-hour forecast also brings us increasing clouds thursday into friday, and it looks like we could see a little bit of a wintry mix. in fact some showers, a little bit of sleet, some light snow making it into parts of the lehigh valley. by 5:00 a.m. friday, this is the big concern of course. visibility may be poor. keep that in mind. the good news is everything does clear by the middle of the day on friday. however, behind that we do have that secondary cold front i showed you earlier, so temperatures will decline into the 30s on friday and on
