steak knife in my face. >> scared for her life. tonight the store clerk talks about how a customer came to her rescue. nbc 10 news starts now. mother nature is about to take us on another roller coaster ride. what a difference a day makes. today sunshine and shorts. tomorrow morning cold and snow. we are tracking snow over the next few hours. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. first alert weather team has you covered with the snow at the worst possible time, the morning rush. where the flakes are already falling to philadelphia. the timing depends on where you live. we start tonight with first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> you saw that snow in the poconos and it's showing on radar right there, that's the leading edge. a pretty big area of snow, as you can see most of it is moving to the east, but eventually moving in the general direction of southeastern pennsylvania.

we have a first alert out for the lehigh valley, berks, montgomery counties that will have a little more snow, be a little colder inspect is friday, 4:00 to 9:00 a.m. the main problem will be the visibility right during the morning rush when there's already a lot of traffic and some accumulation on untreated roads. that is just in those areas. near 3:30 already snowing in allentown, the darker blue indicating the heavier snow. there's 7:30 right over philadelphia, trenton, down to wilmington. that's some pretty serious snow. and then it's rain farther to the south and east. now, the ground, the roads being warm, that is really going to help us. the surface temperatures being above freezing in many areas, that's going to help us as well. so we're not talking about a lot of accumulation, but that's a

lot of hours of snow right during the morning rush. more on the timing and the totals for your neighborhood coming up. >> and the timing of this winter storm is not good for drivers. >> the early rain before the snow changeover could make the drive even messier. drew in plymouth meeting with what we can all expect. >> reporter: unclear if this parking lot will need this plow. as glenn just said, the ground here, it's too warm. maybe that will melt some of the snow. the real problem is on the interstates where drivers will face slick conditions and maybe poor visibility as that snow comes down at the worst possible time, during the morning commute. it's all quiet tonight at the norristown penndot yard, crews could not treat the roads because there's rain on the way first, and it would wash all the salt away. >> that's not fun for the kids but definitely not fun for us adults either if you have to be out and traveling.

>> reporter: this mom knows it probably won't mean a snow day off, but it will be a shock to the system. check out outdoor happening happening tone in manayunk where some people were out wearing shorts. >> the weather has been a little off. >> reporter: this woman is matching spring clothing with winter ones. not a total shift in seasons yet. and it looks like that was a good idea. >> we have knits left, ladies. so we're happy for the snow to come back and get some more of these beautiful things out of the store. >> reporter: families soaked up the last of these upper 60-degree temperatures on belmont plateau. after this frisbee game, they had some adjusting to do at home. >> have to kind of reprepare the house, put the thermostats where they need to be to prepare for this. when the weather is already warm and warming up more, kind of crazy. >> reporter: penndot trucks have not been out tonight, but they will be just as soon as that rain turns over to snow. they'll begin dropping that

salt. they're calling in a nuisance storm but they do hope you'll be extra careful heading into work tomorrow. >> the timing of the snow could mean schools decide to open late or even close in the morning. make sure you sign up for text alerts on the nbc 10 app for school closings. we'll be on the air a half hour early from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. the morning team will have the most accurate forecast and up to the minute traffic updates. finally a green light for drivers. the eastbound lanes of the del care river turnpike bridge opened minutes ago just in time for a snowy commute in the morning. the bridge connecting pennsylvania and new jersey has been closed for seven weeks. brandon hudson joins us. >> you can almost hear the cheers from drivers. this opened several weeks ahead of schedule. >> reporter: a lot of happy drivers, jim and jacqueline. a lot of them coming off the eastbound lanes of this bridge. this bridge was supposed to open in april.

you can see some of these signs are still here to warn people about these ramps. you can see some trucks, you may see some cars coming in from the eastbound lanes. most people we spoke to tonight, they're happy about this news. but we met one person who didn't mind this being closed. as turnpike crews replaced signs in the delaware river bridge entrance, we met someone who didn't mind it being closed. he's a pizza delivery man. he could make deliveries faster. when they reopen the bridge, how long will it take? >> it might take 20 minutes. on a friday night, forget it. >> reporter: he knows he's in the minority. but he's happy for the inconvenienced drivers who can use the bridge again. >> i can make it to pennsylvania in seven minutes where i go if i jump on the turnpike. >> reporter: back on january 20th, the turnpike commission

closed the bridge because of a crack underneath the westbound lanes in bristol. the shutdown forced some 42,000 daily drivers to reroute. >> the congestion and then if there's a bridge opening, i couldn't rely on getting to work at a good time. i've been late pretty much every day. >> reporter: turnpike officials say a repair team worked seven weeks to fix the bridge. they ran a test by having trucks carrying 40 tons drive over it. this woman was happy to hear the news because there will be less drivers on her and her co-workers' drive to work. >> i was going to text her and tell her it's opening tonight. >> reporter: turnpike officials say they're confident this bridge is sturdy. they're also investigating what caused the break in this bridge, whether it's the constant flow of heavy trucks or strong winds. reporting live here in florence, i'm brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, surveillance video of the family dollar

robbery. >> tonight an employee tells nbc 10 she would probably be dead if it weren't for a customer who jumped in to help her. watch the upper right part of your screen. the victim said she spotted the man trying to steal deodorant. she confronted him and he shoved her into a shelf and held a large knife to her face. that's when a customer jumped in to help. >> when i turned around the female customer that was in the shore, she was it will ralgy on his back hitting him. it was definitely a traumatic experience. >> see if you can take a good look at the guy here. if you recognize him, you're asked to call police. two men are fighting for their lives in the hospital after a shooting today in hunting park. police say 16 shots in all were fired, eight of them hit the car. the driver crashed into this store near ninth and butler streets. both victims are in critical condition. sarah packer is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. she's the bucks county woman accused of murdering her adopted daughter last year. 14-year-old grace packer was

found dead last october. it was months after sara packer reported her missing. police say the elder packer and her boyfriend raped and murdered grace in july and then dumped her body in the woods. investigators believe the couple planned the murder for more than a year. a man accused in a deadly ambush that triggered a massive man hunt. lawyers started questioning potential jurors today in the eric frein trial. he's charged with shooting and killing corporal brian dixon and wounding trooper alex douglas in pike county in 2014. that attack led to a 48-day manhunt. jurors are being chosen here due to widespread media coverage in the poconos. more than two-thirds said they heard about the case on the news. new details now into the investigation of jewish community center threats across the country. the head of new york city's police intelligence says he believes one person is behind a large number of the threats nationwide. investigators say a man is using

a voice changer to call in those threats. more than 140 threats have been made against jewish institutions since january. the republican replacement for the affordable care act is now two steps closer to reality. two key house committees approved the bill that would put an end to obamacare. this while speaker paul ryan held a power point presentation today. he urged fellow republicans to support the american healthcare act. it still needs approval from the budget and rules committees before heading to the house floor. tonight some eagles excitement. the eagles made a big splash with two receivers for carson wentz. >> john clark is joining us now. break down the two new receivers for the eagles. >> eagles fans wanted weapons for carson wentz and i think they're happy they got them, carson is certainly happy. they get the biggest name on the free agent market. receiver alshon jeffrey from the

he's been through. i'm very proud of him, yes. >> reporter: reporting in camden county, keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> mom should be proud. earlier tonight nbc 10 montgomery county where we found these kids at batting practice. >> hard to believe in a few hours we're going to see snow. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking this winter storm. glenn, crazy. >> yeah, may be hard to believe but like i said earlier, it's going to happen. i'm not making this stuff up. there it is, snowing in the poconos already. that's the first sign of things to come. it's 31 degrees there. still in the 40s, allentown, reading, lancaster, pottstown, but it was in the 60s a few hours ago. the temperature is dropping. it's got a ways to go, though. it's still rain in state college, but snow right behind it. it's not exactly a typical storm here. it's not circular or anything. and it does not have a great potential, but it's just the

timing of this that is difficult here. 6:00 a.m., the latest computer models do not have it down into bucks, montgomery or chester counties, by 6:00 a.m. we're talking later in the morning rush, but allentown, reading getting snow and allentown's even below freezing. by 8:00, the snow into philly still above freezing, though. the darker blue indicating heavier snow. 9:00 a.m., getting it but still above freezing. and the roads are warm because of these 60-degree temperatures that we've had. 11:30 still above freezing even though the snow continues. and even if it gets heavier in jersey and delaware, most of it's melting on the roads. more snow showers even into the afternoon. and after dark, that's when it starts getting cold. and boy, does it get cold. by midnight down to 15 degrees. temperature not feels like, because the feels like is down to zero by 11:00 tomorrow night.

it was 68 degrees today. then saturday night down to single digits. in the afternoon, it's in the teens. how much snow? not much. at least not on any kind of roads. less than an inch from philadelphia southward as you can see virtually nothing to the south. just going to all melt at the shore. ocean temperature too high for that, too. now, less than an inch here in east windsor, trenton, ben-salem, that will be on grassy surfaces. again, did not expect it on the roads. perhaps a little bit on the higher elevations, grassy surfaces in schwenksville, norristown. 2 to 4 inches algts farther to the north, reading, allentown and a little bit more farther to
