and nbc 10 news at 5:00 begins with the return of winter. the flakes were falling hard in a ardmore. there's only so much an umbrella can do. >> to chestnut hill. we had horses who the protection. sporting some winter jackets as the snow whipped around. a heavy coat is what you're going to need tonight. a live look at philadelphia's logan circle now that the majority of the snow has stopped, a bitter blast of arctic air is moving in. >> phase one, now phase two. good evening, i'm keith jones. >> i'm erin coleman. we're still seeing snow in parts of the area tonight. this is a live look in montgomery county.

we have flakes out there you can see. it's playing out exactly like first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz said it would. some snow followed by bitter cold. >> we have some pretty good snowshowers or even snow squalls coming into philadelphia. this is the link, all right, the turbines are going you know what's supposed to be back there? the city skyline of philadelphia. it's gone. no, the buildings did not disappear, there's snow falling between the stadium and center city and that's what's reducing the visibility. you can see that, right here there's another heavy snowshower back to the south. but right over here. now, you can see south philly's right here. there's center city. and that's the heavy shower. snow squall coming through. lower marion's about to get it. we're about to get hit here at

the station. north philly is in the middle of it right now. that's pretty heavy snowshower. and you saw the results of that. they're moving through fast, though. right over abington, the sun's going to be coming out right after this. that's what happens with these. you get a heavy snow, sun, heavy snow, sun. that's the difference between a steady snow and a snowshower. that knocks the temperature down some. it's down to 31 in allentown. 33 in mount holly. we're still not quite at the freezing mark in many areas, but in a few hours it's going to be. and this moisture from the snowshowers on the roads might end up freezing up. so it may very well be some icy spots this evening as these snowshowers come through and the temperatures go down and we don't have the march sun to help melt things on the road like we did this morning. here's what's going to feel by midnight, single digits, just the beginning of a very cold

weekend. more on that and the storm for next week coming up. our coverage continues with nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal, live. >> quite a difference from just 24 hours ago. >> reporter: yeah, glenn calls it snow, sun, snow, sun. about ten minutes ago we had a squall moving through. a few flurries left. what's left behind after the system passes is the bitter cold air. we're starting to see the winds pick up that could impact the wind chill over the next few days. we caught up with people all across the region dealing with the weather roller coaster. enough snow fell in the front yards that you could build a snowman. for a few hours this morning it was coming down pretty hard. over in chestnut hill, the dedicated crossing guards see it all these days, snow, rain and shine. all within the past 24 hours. >> yesterday we were wearing flip-flops and today, you got to wear your snow boots. it's ridiculous. i don't understand this weather.

>> reporter: it's one of the very few times this strange winter that it actually looks like it's supposed to. in some neighborhoods just in time spring comes in ten days. >> it's cold right now. i'm freezing. >> reporter: how is texas? >> warm. last i was there, 80s. >> reporter: these tourists from houston had one day to see philadelphia, hitting the rock a statue. >> visiting the rocky statue about to run up the stairs. >> reporter: even in the weather? >> yes. >> reporter: but the signs of spring are looking as quickly as the flakes fell today, it melted nearly as fast. sunshine back out by this afternoon. mother nature unable to make up her mind. >> i think it's great how we get little bits of spring in march. god knows what april, may will bring us. >> reporter: and we can tell you what this weekend will bring, a lot of cold weather. the snow may have melted during the sunshine this afternoon. but what's left behind is the

>> she's charged with a lot of things we allege she did not do. >> sarah packer's boyfriend, jacob sullivan is set to appear in court at the end of the month. to the move that could change centuries of history in the catholic church. pope francis says he's open to the idea of married men becoming priests in order to tackle a clergy shortage. nbc 10's tim furlong joins us live from delaware. you spoke to several local catholics, they're pretty split on the issue. >> reporter: yeah, it really depends on who you ask. he said he'd consider letting married men becoming priest. he didn't say anything about single priests or current priests and then getting married. it looks like the pope looks at the world wide priest shortage and trying to think of different ways to recruit. after noon mass at st. joseph's it's down for a fish fry. the big talker here today, pope francis saying he'd consider

letting married men become priests. >> it's overdue in my opinion. >> reporter: some say this isn't really a workable plan. >> if you have a spouse and if you have children, you're going to go limited as to how you're going to minister. >> reporter: hundreds of you voted on a twitter poll i posted. the vast majority said they'd be okay letting married men. also on board. >> he is putting the priority on the eucharist and taking a hard look at that shortage and what that's -- what challenges that's causing people. >> reporter: he says the change would only affect diocease priests. for a thousand years married men were allowed to be priests. the pope wants to make sure everyone who wants to participate in catholic life can do it. >> there aren't enough priests to provide the eucharist that creates a serious situation.

>> reporter: beautiful spot here. still no mention of female priests, the archdiocese of philadelphia wouldn't comment on the pope's remarks. the diocese of wilmington didn't return my e-mail. many dioceses has married deacons. so it's already in play in some spots. we're going to keep you posted. for now we're live from wilmington, delaware. staying in the first state, several people were hurt after a school bus and a dump truck collided in wilmington. the crash happened at d and heald streets. hearing impaired students were on board. a neighbor saw the whole thing and jumped in to see if everyone was okay. >> when i got to the dump truck i noticed they were bleeding really bad. the woman was pinned underneath the dashboard. i asked them were they okay. i was like, let's call 911 right

now. >> the passenger and the bus driver and aide were hospitalized. everyone is expected to be okay. investigators are searching for the cause of a fire that left one person dead in chester county. the fire started around 10:00 this morning on valley forge road. we're told other people were in the house at the time. but they got out safely. it was the second day of jury selection today for the man accused of the ambush killing of a pennsylvania state trooper. eric frein was captured after a 50 day manhunt. he's facing first degree murder charges for killing one trooper and injuring another. the jury will come from chester county with hopes that lawyers can find jurors who have not seen media coverage. we have new details that ended with a car crashing into a house at penn's drive. the driver turned himself in overnight. police tried pulling him over on

wednesday night, but he kept driving and crashed into a home. he is facing a long list of charges, including assault, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. today, pekoe told us it will take months to recover from a fire in north philly. the utility says it is too soon to know what the blaze will end up costing customers. rush hour, just got easier for drivers who use the delaware river turnpike bridge. >> after being closed for months to fix a crack, the bridge opens ahead of schedule. this evening, no more details, thousands of commuters should get home much faster. life getting easier for commuters who take the train. beginning monday they can buy and reload septa key cards at more locations. riders can load up their cars on the market frankfurt line, broadstreet line and the oleny transportation center. after five days off the job,

well we just had a squall move through center city things are drying up. you can see there is moisture on those roads. as we look at the kimmel campus camera towards city hall. the temperatures will be plunging tonight. you don't want moisture on the roads ahead of plunging

temperatures. it would be nice if the sun would come up a little and dry some of this stuff out. thank you so much. we're halfway through president trump's first 100 days. >> and the president is using this 50th day in office to celebrate a new jobs report. 235,000 jobs were created in february. the number leads to a lower unemployment rate, now at 4.7%. down a tenth from january. president trump says these numbers are a direct result from his approach to tax and regulation that's already paying off. healthcare took center stage again today with the president leveling a new attack against obamacare. >> mr. trump says it was intentionally made to fail. nbc 10 national correspondent blaine alexander is live with details. >> reporter: you said it, we are 50 days in and the president is really hoping for this key victory, a repeal to obamacare to help fulfill his campaign

back there and you couldn't see it. there it is. five minutes, just like that things can change. the problem is that it's dumped more moisture on the roads and as it's getting cold, it's going to lead to some icy spots. i also recommend clear your driveway and sidewalks before it gets too dark and the temperature gets too low. it's going to be harder to get rid of that come tomorrow morning. it's going to feel like single digits tonight and teens most of the weekend. and we do have a winter storm coming monday night into tuesday. details remain to be seen. but it's got potential for big accumulations for at least part of our area. 37 degrees in philadelphia now. they reported that snowshower that's no longer there. more snowshowers in the suburbs and across much of the area. look at lehigh valley, dark.

and 30 degrees. that's not a good combination with the rain -- or with the snowshowers. west callan, 31. exton, 32. elroy, 31. milford township, 28. bedminister 29. warrenton, newhope at the freezing point. all of the numbers are going down. so any water, moisture, slush, is going to freeze tonight. feels like 20 in allentown right now. 12 in the poconos, of course that's going to be going down by midnight. we're talking about single digits for the feels like temperatures. and we got doylestown down to zero before 6:00 a.m. and a big 7 in philadelphia there. and in the afternoon, it only gets up to feeling like it's in the teens for most of us. so that is definitely a cold night. now the snowshowers and squalls

continue, although it looks like the heaviest one has just moved through philadelphia. so i don't think we're going to be getting anything as heavy as what we just got. but let's see where it is right now. just passed center city. there's center city, south philly, bellmar, new jersey. you got the bulls eye now. getting some heavier snow. just pass cherry hill and continues to move to the south. they're moving fast. that's why the snow is only heavy for a few minutes. there are more snowshowers there but nothing like what we just saw. we've got three days of cold weather. low temperatures and the teens. highs barely getting above freezing. high of 29 in the suburbs, 27 lehigh valley tomorrow. lows in the teens. so the ground is going to be really cold ahead of this next storm. that's going to be one of our problems. because unlike today, and we told you this last night, when

the philadelphia boat show sailed into our area today. it runs from now until sunday evening at the expo center in montgomery county. kids 16 and under get in for free. a little snow didn't stop the city of wilmington from painting a green line down king street it marks the parade route. the annual st. patrick's day parade kicks off at noon tomorrow. winter's made its return tonight. >> snow's been falling throughout the day. it was coming down at a fast clip at the bucks county courthouse in doylestown. check that out with the snow moving in, the temperature quickly becoming the big story here. it is going to be cold, glenn. that's right. some of the coldest weather we have experienced this winter. the bitter air and the biting winds. i'll break it all down, plus the snow that we could be seeing early next week. next in my first alert forecast. definitely doesn't feel like summer at the jersey shore

slow this morning along whitehurst pike. >> we're breaking for freezing temperatures. this is a live picture from center city. you see the roads there, they're a little wet. traffic is building around center city. glenn "hurricane" schwartz said that we'd see snow and it snowed. >> he's telling us about a cold blast that's sticking around all weekend long. >> right. we told you last night that the snow, at least for several hours was just going to melt as it hit the roads. because it was so warm yesterday. but it's not going to be so warm ahead of the next one. and it's going to get colder tonight and we still have some roads that are wet prfrom the snowshowers that came through. that's not a good combination. the flag blowing in the direction showing the colder air moving in right now. you can still see some of those snowshowers, some of them headed

down toward the shore. and some of these are pretty heavy. we've been tracking them through philadelphia and into new jersey. gloucester, right now it's almost completely through philadelphia. waterford, about to get hit by that snowshower. and it went right through mount laurel, right through philadelphia. right at the wrong time of day. and some smaller snowshowers still to come. now we watch the temperatures. down to 31 in allentown, and trenton. 32 in mount holly. so now when the sun sets, and the temperature continues to plunge, any slush is going to freeze, water is going to freeze. and it's not going to be so easy to get rid of the snow tomorrow morning. still a few more snowshowers coming through on the future cast over the next few hours. but what we saw today is just minor league compared to the

potential for the storm early n n next week. >> get your updates on the weekend weather and what's in store for us plus the first alert forecast where you live with the app. this hotel is alleged by a 14-year-old girl. >> her lawsuit says the hotel was making money so it looked the other way. >> reporter: inside northeast philadelphia's roosevelt hotel you'll find staff without much to say. no one wants to talk about this lawsuit filed today claiming a 14-year-old girl was forced into sex slavery here. >> she walked the hallways in scantily dressed attire. it was open.

obvious. known. >> reporter: the girl is only identified in court documents by the initials m.b. her lawyers told us traffickers advertised and negotiated over the phone for m.b. to have sex for cash. >> in this case, the roosevelt inn made it very easy for johns to line the hallways to have sex with a young girl. a child. >> reporter: police and criminal records show sex trafficking has happened here before. the nbc 10 investigators found in 2013, philly police arrested emmanuel bank and christopher powell for sexually trafficking minors here at the roosevelt inn. i'm mitch blocker from nbc 10. the manager wouldn't talk with us on camera. you don't want to talk on camera? off camera he said he has never seen sex trafficking at his hotel. mr. patel says he doesn't know anything about this. >> okay. >> reporter: his bosses at this

new york based management company said they had no comment. >> it's a difficult question, was she forced into that, that's an easy question, the answer is yes. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney's office would not say whether it would be looking into criminal charges. in the past the u.s. attorney's office has charged traffickers themselves. in this case the lawsuit goes after those who are pruofiting which lawyers say allows the sex trafficking trade to thrive. here's a look at our top stories right now. the mother of a murdered teen could get the death penalty if she's convicted. sarah packer was in court today. her adopted daughter, grace was raped and killed last year. packer's boyfriend is also charged. a dump truck slam into a school bus heading to the school for the death in wilmington this morning. witnesses say the driver of the dump truck ran a red light. the kids on the bus were not

hurt but were taken to the hospital to be checked out. both drivers, an aide and a passenger in the dump truck suffered injuries but are expected to be okay. one person was killed when a fire broke out inside this house in chester county this morning. we're told other people were in the house when the fire started, but they made it out safely. investigators are working to figure out what sparked this fire. here's a look at some of the stories making headlines county by county across our region today. delaware county, teachers in chester upland finally have a new contract after negotiating for more than three years. the three year deal includes a raise, but educators will now have to pay a portion of their healthcare cost. the contract still needs a vote but it is expect today pass. camden county, this demolition prompted two calls from the new jersey governor's office apologizing for the

glover house. the mayor says governor christie wants an investigation. and in lehigh county, students in allentown could soon be learning while looking up. a $300,000 state of the art planetarium has been proposed for the high school. if approved the school district will fund raise to pay for it. today is national women and girls hiv/aids awareness day. a high school pohosted a specia assembly tonight to raise awareness to the increasing impact of the disease and on women and girls. 24 hours on the clock. the new rule that will have some doctors working longer. plus status updates. sharing moments big and small with family and friends is what facebook is all about. one baby announcement is getting a little more attention than the others.

a new study suggests yoga could help with depression. researchers at boston medical center found weekly yoga sessions and deep breathing exercises helped ease systems of depression. the practice helped people who were having trouble finding relief from medications. doctors say yoga can release the same feel good brain chemicals that come with regular exercise.

could dizzy spells increase your risk of dementia in old age? researchers at johns hopkins say yes. they studied middle aged adults with a history of dizzy episodes. they found 40% were more likely to develop dementia over the next 20 years. if you think eight hours is a long day. listen to this, new rules will soon allow rookie doctors to work 24 hours straight. supporters say it will boost their training, others worry exhausted doctors are more likely to make medical mistakes. facebook founder mark zuckerberg and his wife are expecting their second daughter. they already have a 15 month old daughter named max. zuckerberg wrote on facebook that he and his wife can't wait and are happy max will have a sister to grow up with. very cool. the price of your favorite salad dressing is going up. that's because of an olive oil shortage in europe. droughts in places like spain and italy caused olive oil prices to spike 20% in 2015.

you just don't do that. all right. now back to our weather. >> wintry weather, made a triumphant return to our area today. take a look at what drivers had to deal with during the commute in chester county along route 252. windshield wipers working overtime. let's check in with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz for a look at what's to come. you predicted this, what's next? >> and what happened was 68 degrees yesterday, so when the snow fell this morning, it melted on the roads just as we had expected. now the problem is we've got moisture on the roads here, right in the middle of center city and the temperature is going down. the wind, we really need the wind to dry those roads out. otherwise it will be icy surfaces. and a short period of time because it's already getting close. allentown, trenton, 31. 32 in mount holly. and, of course, they're going to be going down much more quickly

once the sun goes down. shortly after 6:00. the temperature above freezing throughout delaware. but again, not for long. 34 in claymont. 37 in marshallton and middletown. and 40 in reading, bridgeville. so most of delaware is already down into the 30s. so it's not that far to go into the 20s. feels like 8 in mount pocono. 20 in allentown now. and of course, those numbers are going to keep going down throughout the evening and by later on this evening if you're headed outside, any icy spots, you got to watch out. dress for wintertime. it's about as cold as last weekend. feeling like 1 in doylestown at 7:00 in the morning. and then it doesn't really warm up a whole lot during the day. it's going to be a windy day tomorrow. we're going to be seeing wind gusts close to 40 miles an hour. we had snowshowers racing.

because they're small and moving fast, you only get about five minutes of a heavy snow. when you get it, as we've been showing you with the live cameras, you can't see anything. and all of a sudden the sun comes out. we've got one over sea aisisle y and this one has just about ended at williams town. over winslow right now. and that will be headed to the shore as well. that's the storm itself if you want to call it a storm. it's not a very strong som that was coming through here. the next one will be much stronger. and what's happening ahead of it is a problem because it's so cold, the roads are going to be cold ahead of this next storm. teens at night for the next couple of nights. and even monday morning is cold in the teens in much of the area. lehigh valley, even 16 by monday morning. and a high of 32.

and then you got precipitation coming in overnight wednesday night. yeah, not only is that snow, that snow is going to stick. even at the jersey shore, a low of 20 and a high of 38 on monday after that very cold weekend. so now, this storm that we're talking about develops down in the gulf of mexico, picks up gulf of mexico moisture. becomes a nor'easter, picks up atlantic moisture. the storm that came through today didn't have either. so there's going to be tremendous amounts of moisture with this storm. the track is it going to hug the coast? some models show that which would mean snow to rain, back to snow for philadelphia. mostly rain for the shore. and the heavy snow would be inland. if the track is further offshore, then we could get the heavy snow even at the jersey shore and back to philly with lesser snows back towards the lehigh valley.
