snow is on the way, and a lot of it, a system had a big impact already in the midwest. stocking up, stores are packed as people prepare to hunker down. battling the flames. crews fighting a fire in cold weather when a local home is engulfed. nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, we declared a first alert as the radar tracks a major winter storm on the way in less than 12 hours. the entire viewing area will feel the effects in one way or another. the storm coming our way is causing trouble in the midwest. in iowa this morning, strong winds mixing with heavy snow made for rough road conditions. drivers slid off highways and

many caught in long traffic backups. right now, it's the calm before the storm. here's a live look right now at broad street in center city. this is looking north there at city hall. this time tomorrow, though, it's going to look very, very different. >> in a big way. >> good morning. >> we have you covered today. in the next hour, we'll give you everything you need to know to prepare for the snow headed our way. pamela is showing us how people are stocking up, and our meteorologist have prepared your most accurate forecast. let's check in with crystal. >> this is a first alert for our entire region, but it's broke undown into neighborhoods because with our neighborhood forecast, it gives you a better idea of what to expect. so, the i-95 corridor and surrounding cities, areas north and west of the corridor as well. these zones starting tonight through late tuesday looking at heavy accumulating snow. strong winds. as a result of that, blowing

winds and blowing snow. limited visibility as well, especially during what would be a morning commute, although, tomorrow, not a lot of commuters out there. south jersey, the shore and southern delaware, same timeline. heavy snow starts, but quickly, especially along the jersey shore and delaware beaches is switches to heavy rain. as a result of the strong wind gusts, we have damage concerns and coastal flooding expectations with high tides, moderate coastal flooding is likely. this is the wide view, a coast tallow causing the biggest issues. there's the snow in the west. wreaking havoc and will continue to in our direction. the two combine to make a big snowstorm over the area. at 10:00 p.m. tonight, the flakes start falling in the southern and western zones. continuing through, there's deep, deep blues at 4:00 a.m., that's heavy bands passing by.

the i-95 corridor and areas north and west, heavy rain falls as we go further south. notice that rain/snow line presses against the i-95 corridor at 9:00 a.m. with the heaviest rain pummelling the shore points. in a few minutes, a look into the neighborhoods and future models and potential snow totals. all right. see you in a bet. continuing team coverage, if you've been to the grocery store today, you know there's a storm coming. >> milk, eggs, bread, it's a joke, but really stores are packed with shoppers picking up last minute supplies. pamela is checking out stores this morning and is live from winfield heights. what's it been like, pamg? >> reporter: since this morning, people are out and about really taking care of business ahead of the storm. grocery stores throughout the area like this here seeing a steady stream of customers coming in, stocking up on essentials ahead of the storm, filling up gas tanks as well, and yesterday, grocery stores

were packed with people buying everything from bottles of water to milk. we talked to one woman who says she was ourt sht shopping last , forgot a few things, and stopped on the way to work this morning not to worry about the rush later on. take a listen. >> just grabbing a few items. i'm expecting school to be cancelled tomorrow, possibly wednesday, i guess, and from then on, what happens, i'm supposed to travel tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. >> reporter: and she might not end up going anywhere at all as much as you find out tomorrow as well. there's a good point about schools, though. the philadelphia school district is going to be meeting today at 3:00 to decide whether or not to cancel school for tomorrow. we'll, of course, keep you posted on that. meantime, if you're at work now, if there's a few items to get, mooigt not be a bad idea to take lunch breaks to get that stuff done because as we said, it's expected to be a mad rush later on this evening.

the home on north 23rd street at 8:30 this morning. two people are treated for injuries. this is how the fire looked from the ground. 80 firefighters responded to the call. they rescued victims from the building, especially the third floor, and red cross is helping families displaced by the fire. a deadly accident involving a tour bus. a person was hit by a bus in dante and lincoln avenues. we are working to learn more about the city and how it happened. a school bus hit a pole in northeast philadelphia this morning, but there were no injuries in the crash. this was roosevelt boulevard. the accident happened at you have 30, knocked down a traffic light, bus window had damage, working to find out what caused that accident. in south jersey, route 73 shut down in both directions in the early morning rush because of this. this picture shows the reason why. a tractor trailer involved in an accident caught fire between flemming poo ining pike.

no one was hurt. further north from where that accident happened in the early morning hours, looks like we're having problems on route 73. tell us about that. >> let's get you updated. jess? >> headed back to route 73 for another crash as route 73 near fip road, northbound side, there's an accident here. investigation underway. on the left hand side, the lane is blocked, traffic northbound is getting by. on the southbound side, even we're losing lanes as you can see. a little bit of a delay approaching either side of the accident scene on route 73 and around valley road, here's the expressway. we're seeing that eastbound delay towards center city right around girard avenue here, but that total drive time, 20 minutes blue route to the vine, speeds down in the 30s as well. mass transit has delays. 16 minutes on doyletown trains.

here's a live look now at the first alert radar as we are tracking that major snowstorm on the way. it starts in the southern and western parts of the viewing area at 9:00 and 10:00 tonight. our team of meteorologists will be back in a minute with the most accurate forecast, expected snow totals for your neighborhood. president trump is facing a deadline today to prove those wiretapping claims against former president obama. earlier this month, the president tweeted accusations that obama tap his phone in trump tower in new york before the election. the former presi trump's claims, quote, simply false. lawmakers investigating t asked department to turn over any evidence by today. in philadelphia, pennsylvania senator casey faced a friend lly crowd

the map, nowhere made it freezing yet. we're all below freezing. later today, cold, o go into th hours. so, what that means is once the storm moves in, it will be very easy for accumulation to occur. here's part one of the storm. that's the system that' to the west. now moving through parts of indiana, illinois, and that's quickly moving our way as we get into this evening. here's part two, that coast tallow is ready to form. as we get i e going to start to turn up the east coast by tonight making it right to us. all arrows mean a big storm hitting parts of the mid atlantic and northeast right on through the overnight hours into tomorrow. this is the hour by hour, tighter look from ten minutes ago. starting at 9:00 p.m. you see the southern most zones, first flakes fall, quickly turns to rain, snow spreads by 10:30,

now through wilmington and filly, and then 3:30 in the morning, the area is covered in steady rain or now a heavier snow. take a look at those deepestwil. that progresses from 3:00 to 8:30 in the morning across the region with the heaviest rain down south. that moves out later into the morning. at 11:30 is the last of the heaviest snow, scattered throughout the afternoon, and we clear on wednesday. now let's talk about the impacts of the storm including the winds and the snow totals with wantso know how much snow can we expect? this is a neighborhood by neighborhood forecast. let'srt what our snow totals look like inwareall. sea isle city, 0-4 inches. cumberland on a gradiengradient 4-8 the further west you go.

philadelphia will see about 4-8 inches, 8-northward, and some maybe seeing upwards of 15 inches of snowfall in total when it's said and done. to shot the out. it's a two-part system. first i e west of us, and the second one, more importantly, is this area of low pressure thas a nor'easter, essentially, that will continue to work its way off theastern sea board, 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning, developing off the coast of at 10:00 a.m., and we see it here approaching justouware now, here's where the biggest concern lies, especially if you jersey shore, delaware shore, really strong winds, indicative could have really strong winds

that will continue to affect the region as this nor'easter continues to move out towards north to nova scotia and out to sea. we have a high wind warning that has been issued, and that's to be expected with hour by hour wind gusts showing us gusts topping out between 55 miles per hour. i think this is a little conservative. we could see gusts topping out at 65-70 miles per hour. we do have that high wind warning that has been issued. of course, if you follow us, we'll have more information for you on social media. back to you. all right, thank you. breaking news right now. because of the storm, southwest airlines has cancelled all operations on tuesday in philadelphia. you're looking at live picture right now, philadelphia international airport, and they're warning travelers to check with your carrier ahead of the storm. the airport tweeted airlines are waivered to change flights without penalty. monitor and keep our eyes on that situation. well, with the winter storm approaching, the american red cross is reminding people about

the best way to prepare and stay safe. the ceo of the red cross is here, joining us live in studio. always great to see you in the studio. talk to us about winterizing your car. >> so, thank you, it's so important the community hear from you about getting ready for the storm. when you winterize your car, there's a couple simple things to do.mb one, fill up the gas tk to prevent freezing. you temergency flies should bee car, flashlights, they need a blanket in their car, they need some things that they can hold overwarm. if they have a glass breaker, that's really important to have. >> fresh bottle of water. people get stranded, run or slide road, you get stranded, rely what's in the car. >> and some granola bars.

>> very good. >> what are things people should do to stay safe in the at home. absolutely stay at home. if your power goes out, do not try to heat your home with generators, or ifectricity goes out using an oven to heat your home, don't do these things. best way to stay warm is lots o blanke blankets. this is important to have a shelter in place kit in the house. it, too, would have water, foo butter. it'll have flashlights in it, coloring books, puzzles for the kids to keep them from being re for three days. you want a gallon of water for each person in your home and a gallon it's critical that you can stay in. the other thing i want them to think about is that whenstop sn tomorrow night and they come out

and philadelphia school district meets at 3:00 today to let us know about whether or not to close school tomorrow. >> pamela shows us how people are stocking up, and our meteorologists are here to prepare your most accurate forecast, but we start with ys a forecast two-prong. we are tracking both wind gusts and satellite/radar. the winds will be thrusting into our area by tomorrow morning. as we can flip over to the other system that has our satellite/radar visibility on it, we can show you where the two separate systems are. there it is. there's the look. this is the first system from the west, pumping snow into our area as we get into the evening. it's the exact same time we have a coast tallow. you see the formation building there, the greens on radar. that's going to be tracking up our direction. the two combine to make the major snowstorm for us. the biggest we've seen this season. let's go from your radar and satellite to the timing of the

storm. 9:00 to 10:00 tonight starts in the south and west. they see the first flakes. at 3:00 a.m. through 11:00, i pushed it forward to 3:00 a.m., heaviest snow enters our area from the i-95 corridor north and west. by tuesday as we go later into the day, things will start to weaken. the actual storm center is moving off away from us from the northeast, so on the backside, scattered snow showers that linger into wednesday morning, but they will not be nearly as widespread or heavy. here's the storm expectations. heavy snow is a given, but also high winds. looking at coastal flooding potential. limited visibility due to high winds and snow and beach erosion on top of the flooding due to high wind gusts we are expecting. coming up in minutes, we break down some of the threats neighborhood by neighborhood. >> thank you. meanwhile, rush is on to prepare for the storm surge. >> there is a big rush to grab

milk and get gas this morning, a good idea. pamela has been talking to people as a they run last minute erran errands. she is live. pamela? >> reporter: i was one of the people who ran in the store to get last minute items needed. just pretty much same as everyone that we're seeing this morning taking care of business ahead of the storm stocking up on all of the essentials. we saw people, as you said, filling up gas tanks this morning, and yesterday, stores packed with people as well buying everything from bottles of water to milk. we talked to one woman who was shopping at the acme and said she usual i shops at 6:00 in the morning, but normally, she's by herself. there's not as many people inside. today, she was just there to get a few things, and there were a lot of people inside. >> i'm afraid of the wind. the snow doesn't bother me as much as the wind bothers me. i'm afraid of the wind. >> reporter: so everyone has their own concerns going into

the storm. for some people, it's shoveling as you heard from the woman there, it's the wind. if you have a little bit of extra time on your lunch break or wiggle room in your shift today, not a bad idea to go ahead and hit the store if you need to errands because it's going to be packed later on reporting live this afternoon, pamela, nbc 10 news. >> absolutely right, thanks. philadelphia street crews work hard to get ready before the snowfalls. we just spoke to the chief highway engineer about preparations. the biggest challenge is going to be the rate it's coming down. it's going to expect to come down 1-2 inches an hour. just hampers visibility of the drivers and other vehicles out on the streets. it's going to be slow moving. crews start out salting and switch to a plowing operation. there are about 50,000 tons of salt available and some 400 trucks should be on city streets. deldot loading trucks with

brine and salt to prepare the roads before the flakes fall. others doing the same as the storm approaches. now let's talk about flying. southwest airlines just announced they are cancelling all operations tomorrow at philly international. american not having flights in or out until after 5:00. >> this is how travelers are getting out ahead of the storm. >> reporter: most flights at philly international are on time for now before the first flakes father and mother. crews are ready inside and out. >> we're always prepared to deal with any kind of storms, and we've had several days notice this storm was pending, so we have been very prepared. >> reporter: this group of coworkers are getting out to florida just in time. >> we work 12-hour shifts, so we were watching every time it came on with the weather thinking, please, please, please. >> reporter: if your flight scheduled later today or tomorrow, there may be open after all. >> many of the airlines began to

because it stays snow for the entire event. right along the i-95 corridor, watch the numbers. that's the areas where we are just on the cusp of the heavier rain south. 9:00 to 16:0030, it spreads east. we continue to 4:00 a.m. heaviest snow moves in. look at deep blues and purples there at 32 degrees up to trenton. that's the line of the heavy snow continuing north and west, seeing the highest totals. the pink is the mix to heavy rain, down south, especially on the shore and our delaware beaches in the mid hfr 30s. as we continue long, 8:30, potential for heavy sleet. 8:00 to 9:00, back to snow, still heavy north at 11:00, and does move out and scatter as we get into the afternoon hours, and it should thin out entirely as we go through your wednesday. here are your snow totals. lowest amounts south because we are tracking there to be mix of

speeds and gusts. gusts that could top out between 25, 35 miles per hour, tonight, early tomorro65-70 miles per hour concerned. there's a blizzard warning issued for some, high wind warr many as well across the region. let's track the nor'easter out for you as it works eastward. here you can see that this does intensify just off the jersey shore, and as it does, you will see winds and gusts increase quite a bit here. this is a strong system, so hour by hour forecast, it's timing out for you, gusts increasing to about 45-50 miles per hour, and? why we have the high wind warning issued and in effect until 6:00 p.m. tuesday. keep in mind, however, we have the threat of some coastal flooding, beach erosion, and really that blizzard warning that has been issued for ocean county as well. >> two systems, one sweeping
